Frank Lloyd Wright Biography of this influential architect from Prairie Styles. http://www.prairiestyles.com/wright.htm
Extractions: Wright worked for Silsbee for about a year before he left to take a better paying drafting job with Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, who were working on the design of the Auditorium Theater in Chicago at the time. Wright referred to Sullivan as his Lieber Meister (beloved master) and was the only architect that Wright would acknowledge had an influence on him. The basis for Wrights future work was born out of the idea and philosophy of Sullivans that "form follows function". He stayed with Adler and Sullivan until 1893 when a dispute over his acceptance of a growing number of independent commissions led Sullivan to fire him. In 1889, Wright met and married his first of three wives, Catherine Lee Clark Tobin. He also borrowed $5000 from his then employer, Louis Sullivan, to purchase a lot in Oak Park, Illinois and build his first house. Frank and Catherine raised six children together in the house that he used as an architectural laboratory, a building that saw many changes and additions as he developed his Prairie style of architecture. After leaving the employ of Adler and Sullivan, Wright opened his own office in the Schiller building in downtown Chicago, sharing space with Cecil Corwin. In 1894 he relocated his office to the 11

I want to share with any visitors to my site, my philosophy, and my appreciation of the great world of architecture. My feeling is that good architecture is indeed an art form and can be approached as such. Far too many architectural projects are initiated with only engineering in mind The final result is a building without soul. Fallingwater is his masterpiece, "the most famous residence ever build" ; tne AIA ( American Institute of arhitects ) refers to Fallingwater as "the best all-time work ofAmerican architecture". Fallingwater is a synthesis of "organic architecture"; it integrates man with nature, as Wright taught to his students at his Taliesen Studio. Fallingwater was constructed of sandstone quarried on the property and was built by local craftsmen. It follows the concept of integrating environmental factors, function, native materials, construction process and humans (the client).

After studying civil engineering at the Univ. of Wisconsin, he worked for seven years in the office of Dankmar Adler and Louis H. Sullivan in Chicago. Wright's first independent commission was the Winslow residence (1893). Establishing himself in Oak Park, Ill., he built a series of residences with low horizontal lines and strongly projecting eaves that echoed the rhythms of the surrounding landscape; it was termed his prairie style. The most famous examples are located in Chicago and its suburbs; they include the Willitts house (1900?-1902), Highland Park; the Coonley house (1908), Riverside; and the Robie house (1909), Chicago.

That was the way the late Frank Lloyd Wright operated, and legends have grown up about his insistence that homeowners follow his dictums and details about interior decoration. Living in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was sometimes like living in a church where God might stop by on a personal visit to be sure the sanctuary was dusted and polished. Judith Dunham, the Berkeley author of "Details of Frank Lloyd Wright: The California Work, 1909-1974" (Chronicle Books; $29.95), relates how the famed architect dropped by to see one couple whose house he had designed. "He didn't like the art that the owners had chosen," Dunham said in an interview. "At the time, Wright was working on the Morris Gift Shop in San Francisco. So while he was in the city, he ordered a very expensive vase at a local store and had it shipped to the house. Of course, he had the bill sent to them, too.

Most people watching the two-night series saw only a stylized "E" icon appear briefly in the corner of the screen (with the disclosure "where available"), reminding viewers that the program was "enhanced." But there was more for viewers watching on specially equipped personal computers in the seven cities where public TV stations were putting out DTV signals. As participants in a technical trial by Intel Corp. and PBS, they could take a virtual tour of Wright buildings they had just seen in the film, rummage more broadly through talking-head comments, and go deeper into an interview with old man Wright himself. Such is the case with Arizona Theatre Company's production of Work Song: Three Views of Frank Lloyd Wright . Eric Simonson's work as Director is impressive, sweeping the audience through 70 years and the tumultuous events of world renowned architect Wright's life. He creates wonderful images and utilizes his ensemble to maximum effect. He successfully brings to life awkward narration. His choice to have the ensemble spin images of Wright's partitions around the actors in the first act helps keep the action moving continuously. Playing Wright from imperious youth to grouchy elder, Lee E. Ernst is remarkable. He accurately captures powerful aspects of Wright, from his hardheaded determination through his moments of divinely inspired insight to his brief flashes of charm. Kent Doresey's set

Extractions: By Rob Nelson Architecture is the triumph of the Human Imagination over materials, methods, and men, to put man into possession of his own Earth. It is at least the geometric pattern of things, of life, of the human and social world. It is at best that magic framework of reality that we sometimes touch upon when we use the word 'order'. Frank Lloyd Wright, 1930, 1937 Frank Lloyd Wright was an extraordinary designer. Wright studied civil engineering at UW-Madison. Much later, the people of Madison wanted him to design a convention center and in 1938, he did. The building was to be named Monona Terrace, located on Lake Monona. Unfortunately, plans for the building lay unused until the early 1990's, when a group of citizens decided it was time to take action. The final project will be completed on July 1, 1997, just in time for the Fourth of July celebration. Wright led an intriguing life as an architect. Wright started his career in Chicago, in 1887, as a draftsman for the firm of Adler and Sullivan. Through hard work, he was eventually appointed head of residential designs. However, after working at the firm for about twelve years, it was discovered that he was designing houses of his own, and he was fired. Turning his failure into success, Wright opened his own firm in 1893. Forty-nine buildings were designed and built in a span of eight years.

Extractions: Walter Burley Griffin is chiefly remembered for his design for Australia's National Capital, even though it has scarcely been realized in the detail he envisaged. The essential elements - the great triangle of avenues, the Land Axis, the Lake and the use of the topography to dramatise the city's development - have endured in the heart of Canberra which has grown to more than four times the population of the city he had planned. Griffin worked as an architect in three continents - America, Australia, and India - but apart from a few distinctive houses, a university college, several incinerators and some office buildings, he has left little behind other than his design for Canberra to demonstrate his genius. Griffin was born on 24 November 1876 at Maywood, Chicago, the eldest son of four children born to George Griffin and Estelle Burley. His father was a young insurance broker and city councillor who was able to provide a comfortable upbringing for his son. In 1892, when Griffin was 16, the family moved to the rural suburb of Elmhurst and Griffin was able to frequently visit the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, being held to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Americas. Griffin was impressed by the transformation of a sandy waste beside Lake Michigan into a beautifully landscaped site with terraces, lagoons and monumental pavilions. He resolved then to become an architect when he graduated from high school.

Fisher drove from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in the summer of 1971 and entered the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Frank Gehry's 1975 lecture at UCLA connected architecture to abstract art for Fisher in a profound and distinct way. Fisher worked in Gehry's office from 1978 through 1980 on such projects as Mid-Atlantic Toyota, the De Menil townhouse, Santa Monica Place, the Cabrillo Marine Museum, and Arts Park (a collaboration between Gehry and Lawrence Halprin). Gehry's Cloverfield office was full of the work of California artists Robert Irwin, Tony Berlant, Laddie Dill, Ed Mosses, Billy Al Bengston, Alexis Smith, and others. Gehry brought artists such as Michael Heizer and Elyn Zimmerman into the office for informal talks to the staff and friends.

Extractions: Q: Where did the name Frank Lloyd Vinyl originate? A: Frank Lloyd Vinyl defines itself as the "Original Architects of Music." The band's first lead guitarist, John Tomiszuka, was an architect student at the University of Arizona when he developed the name. Because Arizona native Frank Lloyd Wright is renowned as one the most original and unique architects of his time, the band agreed "Frank Lloyd" was a strong start. The "Vinyl" portion was added because originally all music was recorded on vinyl records.
