It describes methods little changed over 900 years: "if you want to assemble simple windows, first mark out the dimensions of their length and breadth on a wooden board, then draw scroll work or anything else that pleases you, and select colors that are to be put in. Cut the glass and fit the pieces together with the grozing iron. Enclose them with lead cames..... and solder on both sides. Surround it with a wooden frame strengthened with nails and set it up in the place where you wish."

Extractions: Main Page Topics/Index Shop Forum ... E-mail Burnishing is a common technique where you layer several colors lightly and then a finial color over them to get a very smooth/solid look. I usually do it with Prismacolor Thick Lead Art Pencils, white and their clear blending pencil work well for this. Another method is to use a clear blending marker. Sometimes I use Milky Gel Pens and/or white ink to add highlights over my pencils. Always keep your pencils sharp while working! This is especially true with Thick Lead Art and Col-Erase Pencils. I use a hand held Panasonic electric pencil sharpener that I can carry with me no matter where I draw. It is REALLY handy and I recommend them over the plug-in kind if you plan on going anywhere to draw. Do not blend with your fingers - this can cause messy fingerprints or smudging! For Col-Erase use a tissue, q-tip, cotton or a stub (AKA tortillon). For other types of pencils they should be "burnished" not blended. Do not brush off your artwork with your hands!! When working with pencils little flakes of color may come off and sit on top of the paper. Brushing off with your hands may press them into the paper or streak the color. Instead tip the paper up and "tap it off" or then brush it off with a clean, dry paintbrush. Another idea is to buy a makup/blush brush - they are nice and soft and the retractable ones are easy to carry with you.

Extractions: The structure and activities of the Fine Arts 3D department center on the world of objects and object-making. Philosophically and practically, the department reflects the contemporary art world and culture, where boundaries are dissolving: sculptors are making furniture, fiber artists are building installations. Contemporary innovations and formats coexist with traditional approaches; students explore time-honored techniques and craftsmanship along with new technologies. We expect all students in the department to become technically competent, conceptually independent, critically aware, and dedicated to their passion of art-making. Chair Joe Wood explains that "in the 3D studio experience, patterns for problem solving are cultivated. Preliminary drawings, technical practice, model making, material studies, first attempt, second attempt - these are all great problem solving skills. Successful graduates can apply these skills wherever they go." The Fine Arts 3D Department is housed in newly renovated spaces that occupy one of the college's buildings. The nearly 42,000 square feet of well-ventilated and well-maintained studios and workshops feature state-of-the-art equipment and materials. These extraordinary facilities accommodate welding, fabrication, machine tool processes, blacksmithing, foundry processes, woodworking, hot and cold glassworking, kiln firing, and more. The process addressed is that used by a conservator as he/she learns about an object in order to care for it properly and preserve it. Conservators need to know as much as possible about how something was made, what it was made of, why it was made, and who made it. To learn this information, they often consult historians, artists, and other experts. They follow the scientific process as they form hypotheses and consult various sources of evidence to confirm or disprove their hypotheses. With improvements made over the last couple of years, it is still one of the top programs available. It is an easy program to learn how to use and has lots of hidden sophistication to explore for the more advanced artist. It is also the one your kids may already be familiar with through it's presence in a lot of schoolroom computers. Also among all the programs we are going to mention, Kids Pix is probably the most accessible (i.e.. easy to use) for children in the 3 to 5 age range. is also an excellent general arts program of comparable quality (some would say better) to Kids Pix Studio Deluxe. One very interesting addition you will find in this program, is an area called "the journal", where you can learn some of the fundamentals of famous art techniques such as impressionism, as well as read about famous artists. This is a nice addition, as you can look at a technique and then try it out yourself, within the program. A personal preference for several of us, also was the quality of the layout of the main art creating area.
