   Extractions: Creating the basic tie-dye is rather easy. Just crumple a white t-shirt into a loose ball and stretch rubber bands very tightly over the balled shirt one rubber band every three inches or so. Place this centipede-looking thing into a bucket of prepared fabric dye, and let it soak. Remove the shirt from the dye and let it dry. Now remove rubber bands and invite the neighbors in to ooh and aah at your one-of-a-kind way-cool t-shirt. The purpose of the rubber bands is to allow the dye to reach only the exposed surface areas of the shirt while also preventing the dye from reaching the hidden areas that's how the random tie-dye pattern is created. Instead of dipping the shirt into a bucket of dye, you can try squirting, spraying, pouring or painting the dye onto the bundled shirt. Each technique produces a different design and color pattern and serendipity is half the fun of tie-dye.

Others might be considered "just kid stuff". But I've learned never to discount a good reference, no matter the intended source. Some "children's" books, such as DK publishing's "Eyewitness Books" are spectacular resources. So in the end, I say use what works for you. Listed here are a few that have worked for me. I'm sorry to say this treasure from the UK appears to be currently Out of Print, but it is possible to find used. If you can't purchase a copy, check your local library! This book is a HUGE collection of photo poses of both men and women in a variety of positions and costumes, filmed in complete 360 degree views, above and below. It really helps take the guess work out of perspective and positioning on figures, and is well worth the investment if you can find it. Complete, well illustrated, but not extensive text. Text is short; topics are covered in 4-5 paragraphs. Illustrations to procedures are well drawn and clear. Some good color photos of some good Bonsai. Advantages: Basic beginner's text. Clear, easy to understand instruction. Disadvantages: Treatment of subject matter is superficial. Photo quality is not great.
