March 14, 2003 5:37 p.m. ASHEVILLE - The Asheville Symphony Orchestra will continue its 42nd season of Masterworks concerts will a March 22 performance at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. Conducted by Music Director Robert Hart Baker, the program will feature classical music by Weber, Mozart and Brahams. Estela Olevsky will be featured as piano soloist. The performance begins at 8 p.m. The concert will begin with one of the happiest pieces in the standard orchestral repertoire, the "Overture to Oberon" by Carl Maria von Weber. The full opera is rarely performed, but its rousing melodies are well known because of the frequency with which the overture is performed. Last month, the symphony performed one of the five violin concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This month's concert offers one of the greatest of his 27 piano concertos, the "Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor, K. 466."

Spark is comprised of three major elements: a weekly television series premiering on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. on KQED Public Television 9, which features profiles of Bay Area artists and performers, along with a calendar of upcoming events and programs; an interactive online project at www.kqed.org/spark, which includes a Web-based showcase of video, audio and biographical materials on Bay Area artists and performers, a guide to online arts calendars, and forums for discussion and feedback; and an education outreach program designed to leverage the series content in K-12 classrooms in conjunction with new California state-mandated arts education standards.
Fabric Workshop And Museum : Artists-in-Residence Born in London, raised in Nigeria, Shonibare currently lives and works in CreativeProcess The processes behind works created by artists in Residence http://www.fabricworkshop.org/artists/
Extractions: About the Artist-in-Residence Program The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) invites contemporary artists to create new work using experimental materials and techniques. This internationally acclaimed Artist in Residence Program hosts emerging and established regional, national and international contemporary artists who have a demonstrated commitment to innovation and exploration. To that end, the FWM supports artistic experimentation by providing fees and materials to artists, and employing its facilities and staff to address their creative needs. Artists-in-residence are drawn from all disciplines, including painting, sculpture, architecture and design, conceptual and installation art, performance and video. Working collaboratively with the FWMs staff of printers and technicians, artists are introduced to new techniques, materials, and resources, and are thus able to realize projects that would not otherwise be possible. Through this collaborative creative process, artists stretch the boundaries not only of their own work, and of the creative possibility of the various media, but also of the larger development of contemporary art. Current Artists in Residence Doug Aitken Aitken is known for his commercial videos as well as his video installations. His video art involves a productive cross-pollination of styles borrowed from television advertising, Hollywood cinema, experimental and documentary film, as well as the music video genre a blend he refers to as "pure communication." His work was included in the 1997 and 2000 Whitney Biennials and at the 1999 Venice Bienniale, where he won the International Prize. He received his BFA from Art Center College of Design in 1991.

Extractions: Group exhibitions are ticklish. On the one hand, artistic positions are to remain independent, on the other, the aim is to seek points of contact between the works that, at best of times, shed light upon each other. Used in written language, the semicolon today designates such a point, at once establishing contact and a cut, a substitute for something not determined, frozen in motion - taking a breath before continuing.

Extractions: Lives and works in London Sam Taylor-Wood examines emotional isolation through highly choreographed photographic scenes. Five Revolutionary Seconds XIII was taken with a camera that panned 360 degrees around a room during a five-second exposure. While the image is a still photograph, the accompanying soundtrack records sounds and conversational fragments taped during the photo shoot. The people seen are the people heard, but their speech is out of character, the sounds not correlated to the image. The work may ask, Which reality is more valid, that which is heard or that which is seen? Soliloquy I and Soliloquy V operate on multiple levels as well. Both consist of portraits positioned above a panoramic photo predella (an element common to Italian Renaissance altar paintings in which a narrative is depicted below a central image) that relates both aesthetically and thematically to the figure seen above, perhaps representing the inner reality of the person portrayed. Revue Noire African Contemporary Art Caribbean Perhaps the greatest challenge facing Jamaican artists at this point is to safeguardthier specific identity in a rapidly lives and works in Kingston. http://www.revuenoire.com/anglais/S06-2.html
Extractions: Veerle Poupeye-Rammelaere F or those who are not familiar with the subject, modern Jamaican art must seem too hybrid and diverse to identify it as a coherent art mouvement. Jamaican art is indeed in essence pluralist, although it is tied together by a common hitorical, cultural and ideological background. T D uring the 1960's a number of young Jamaican artists, most of whom had studied abroad, rebelled against the nationalist stigma attached to Jamaican art and the conceptual and stylistic limitations of the early movement? This resulted in a diversification of intersts and the intially somewhat forced introduction of new concepts such as abstraction. During the same period, the Black Consciousness movement, Rastafarianism, Jamaica's country, provided a new ideological impetus, which gave new meaning to the issue of cultural identity in Jamaican art. T A Q uite predictably, however, the Jamaican general public prefers the more traditional, realist trends in Jamaican art over the avant-garde. Several of the pioneers of the Jamaican Art Movement, such as Albert Huie and David Pottinger, are still active and continue to paint the indigenous landscapes, genre scenes and portraits that were so revolutionary some fifty years ago. A subtantial segment of the later generation of Jamaican artists has opted to work along similar lines. The most popular artist in this group is the painter Barrington Waston, who translated this traditional iconography in a grand, academistic manner. His approach is emulated by scores of lesser artists.
