Conducted by Music Director Robert Hart Baker, the program will feature classical music by Weber, Mozart and Brahams. Estela Olevsky will be featured as piano soloist. The performance begins at 8 p.m. The concert will begin with one of the happiest pieces in the standard orchestral repertoire, the "Overture to Oberon" by Carl Maria von Weber. The full opera is rarely performed, but its rousing melodies are well known because of the frequency with which the overture is performed. Last month, the symphony performed one of the five violin concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This month's concert offers one of the greatest of his 27 piano concertos, the "Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor, K. 466."

Extractions: The nucleus of this exhibition will be eight extraordinary masterworks of European painting from a private collection installed among remarkable European works from the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation permanent collection. The artists featured include Degas, Pissarro, Picasso, Monet and Chagall. Recent Acquisitions The gallery was designed and built to house the James T. Dyke collection of watercolors and drawings by the Neo-Impressionist artist Paul Signac. His collection spans five decades of Signac's work and is the largest collection of its kind. Current Artists in Residence Doug Aitken Aitken is known for his commercial videos as well as his video installations. His work was included in the 1997 and 2000 Whitney Biennials and at the 1999 Venice Bienniale, where he won the International Prize. He received his BFA from Art Center College of Design in 1991.

Merry Gant Norris has been an established artist for 30 years in Columbus and is active in local and national art groups. She maintains the Merry Nova Studio in Worthington, Ohio, where she facilitates groups in spiritual approaches to painting mandalas. Jeff Thompson grew up in Newark, Ohio, and graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in education. After years teaching special ed, he worked in public relations, started his own advertising and marketing agency, and a few years ago created an additional business called "The Light Works," which allows him to specifically market his landscape photography. Jeff's line of greeting cards, called "A Sense of WonderLandscape as Metaphor," combines some of his favorite photographs with quotes from some of his favorite books. Jeff is currently working on a three-book project featuring the landscape photography he's accumulated over the past 30 years. He also has photo CDs, calendars, journals, and large format posters in the works.

Five Revolutionary Seconds XIII was taken with a camera that panned 360 degrees around a room during a five-second exposure. While the image is a still photograph, the accompanying soundtrack records sounds and conversational fragments taped during the photo shoot. The people seen are the people heard, but their speech is out of character, the sounds not correlated to the image. The work may ask, Which reality is more valid, that which is heard or that which is seen? Soliloquy I and Soliloquy V operate on multiple levels as well. Both consist of portraits positioned above a panoramic photo predella (an element common to Italian Renaissance altar paintings in which a narrative is depicted below a central image) that relates both aesthetically and thematically to the figure seen above, perhaps representing the inner reality of the person portrayed. Jamaican art is indeed in essence pluralist, although it is tied together by a common hitorical, cultural and ideological background. T D uring the 1960's a number of young Jamaican artists, most of whom had studied abroad, rebelled against the nationalist stigma attached to Jamaican art and the conceptual and stylistic limitations of the early movement? This resulted in a diversification of intersts and the intially somewhat forced introduction of new concepts such as abstraction. During the same period, the Black Consciousness movement, Rastafarianism, Jamaica's country, provided a new ideological impetus, which gave new meaning to the issue of cultural identity in Jamaican art. T A Q uite predictably, however, the Jamaican general public prefers the more traditional, realist trends in Jamaican art over the avant-garde. Several of the pioneers of the Jamaican Art Movement, such as Albert Huie and David Pottinger, are still active and continue to paint the indigenous landscapes, genre scenes and portraits that were so revolutionary some fifty years ago. A subtantial segment of the later generation of Jamaican artists has opted to work along similar lines. The most popular artist in this group is the painter Barrington Waston, who translated this traditional iconography in a grand, academistic manner. His approach is emulated by scores of lesser artists.
