Prof. Niall Shanks giving his lecture on Engineering and the Rise of Science at the University of Waterloo. The event was jointly sponsored by the IEEE Kitchener-Waterloo Section and the Department of History, University of Waterloo. Everyone knows that today science and engineering go hand in hand. But what role did engineers play in the rise of modern science during the 16th and 17th centuries? Today we know that biomedical research is heavily dependent on the fruits of the engineer's labors. Shanks argued that engineers played a crucial role in the rise of modern medicine, and thus in the rise of modern science itself. Machine thinking revolutionized medicine. And, thanks to figures such as Galileo, it revolutionized physics. By the end of the 17th century, thanks to Newton, a worldview had crystallized according to which the universe itself was a giant machine that not only obeyed mechanical principles but could be understood with the aid of other machines of our own design. The result was very much an engineer's view of nature.

The Illegal pay offs are lands for drug cultivation and gains for arms trafficking and contraband. How this period differs from those of the past is how it has become more global, how the interests of multinational capital have supplanted those of national capitalists, redefining the national political order to suit the multinational master. From Colombia to the Region. The Invisible Nation Unseen by the world, lost amidst of the images of carnage and chaos, in the empty-speak about the war on drugs, Marxist terrorism and national security doctrines, all of which the national and international media more than happy to sell, there exist some of the most courageous, diverse and innovative popular and grassroots social movements in all of Latin America. They become visible to the world only when they are the victims of massacres and displacements, victims of a violence presented to the world as nothing more than statistics in a series of random and senseless acts in a country lost to war. What is lost is the reality of a clear and deliberate logic to destroy these movements by assassinating their leaders and massacring their communities. The definitive purpose, to eliminate popular resistance and the alternatives they represent.

In 1903 the Dutch Korfball Association was founded, followed in 1921 by the Belgian Association and in 1933 by the International Korfball Federation. Korfball was played in the then Dutch colonies of Indonesia, Surinam and the islands of the Dutch Antilles and the sport was demonstrated during the Olympic Games of 1920 in Antwerp (BEL) and of 1928 in Amsterdam (NED). However, in spite of many efforts, the International Korfball Federation did not grow. In 1946 Great Britain affiliated. In one or two other countries korfball was introduced but without any remaining results. In the beginning of the 1960's, only three countries were affiliated to the International Korfball Fede-ration, viz. The Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain.
