Extractions: The University of Auckland founded a Department of Asian Languages and Literatures thirty-five years ago. Since then it has grown to become the largest and most comprehensive Asia-related university department in New Zealand. In 2000 the department had more than 2,500 enrolments in its various courses, double the size of the Department in 1990. Public awareness of the importance of Asia to New Zealand has grown rapidly. Thirty years ago New Zealand's relations with Asia were in their relative infancy. Direct interactions with people from Asia are now regular and ordinary. Reflecting these changes and New Zealand's need for Asia-related skills, the Department has been reorganised as the School of Asian Studies which involves more staff and coordinates a wider range of courses. The School offers full undergraduate and graduate training in Chinese and Japanese Korean was founded in 1989 and continues to expand, with Masters level study starting in 1997. The School caters to the interest of a wide range of students from all faculties by offering not only language courses but also courses in

CHINESE CLASSICAL POETRY A rich, excellent site that includes the text of "Midaregami" and "Ise Mongatari" as well as a collection of Noh plays and "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" (One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets). The section on Noh plays provides an introduction by Rimer and two glossaries of Noh terms by Tyler and by Brazell. Additionally, one can look at the Noh translations and the originals in parallel frames. The section on "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" has the original, the romanized version and an English translation, and a click on the poem will show a woodblock print from a Meiji-era edition of the poems. A fabulous resource.

The program offers courses in Chinese, Japanese, political science, sociology, history, economics, geography, anthropology, music, cinema, art history, and management. Harpur College and School of Management students also have the option of pursuing a cross-disciplinary East Asian/Management Studies concentration in the East Asian and Management Studies Program, which is described in the School of Management section. Asian Studies Concentration To qualify for a certificate in the cross-disciplinary concentration in Asian studies, a student must take eight relevant four-credit courses (or their equivalents) as approved by the director, with no more than four in any one discipline. The eight courses shall include: 1) At least two semesters' study of Chinese or Japanese or the equivalent; and 2) AAAS 106 (Introduction to Asian Civilizations). The senior seminar in Asian studies (AAAS 490) is strongly recommended but not required. Students may take no more than two of their concentration courses pass/fail and they must maintain at least a C average in their concentration coursework.

East Asian Studies (EAST) Professors: Paul H. Noguchi and Mary Evelyn Tucker Associate Professors: James J. Orr (Chair) and James R. Pusey Assistant Professors: Elizabeth L. Armstrong (adjunct), Erik R. Lofgren, and Anne Wang Pusey (adjunct) The civilizations of East Asia offer a wealth of human experience of invaluable import to every academic discipline. Unbroken cultural lines of great antiquity lead to modern East Asian cultures of great and ever growing global significance. Whether we look first to the past, the present, or the future, in studying East Asia we study ourselves and our world. A traditional liberal education, limited to the study of Western civilization, is no longer a liberal education. The department of East Asian studies, therefore, offers courses for the liberal education of all Bucknell students, as well as for the specialized education of students choosing either the East Asian studies major or one of the departments three minors: in East Asian studies, Chinese, or Japanese. The major , requiring an emphasis on either China or Japan, entails a program of study (created in consultation with a department adviser) that requires a minimum of 10 courses: six language courses in the language of ones emphasis (Chinese or Japanese) and four cultural courses, of which one must be outside ones emphasis (on China or Japan), and one to provide a broad historical introduction to East Asian civilizations must be chosen from the following:

Extractions: Top of page Newsletter Contents EALC Home EALC invited the Chinese Student Association to join in sponsoring the annual Chinese New Year's Party on February 1. Great food, student demonstrations, and activities organized by the Chinese Student Association made this event highly successful. Many people attended: American and international students who study Chinese, American and Chinese teachers, Chinese students at CU. After the dinner, American students and Chinese students performed songs, did Chinese Kongfu, and played some interesting games concerning Chinese culture. All of those attending enjoyed the celebration very much. Top of page Newsletter Contents EALC Home With outstanding support from all of our CU sponsors, including Pablo Kjolseth, director of the International Film Series at CU, the department held a film symposium, spread over five weeks in the fall, and a conference on Japanese Women Filmmakers from October 5-7, 2000. Films shown included Tanaka Kinuyo's Eternal Breast and Girls of the Night , Hidari Sachiko's The Far Road , Kawase Naomi's Moe no Suzaku , and Hamano's In Search of Osaki Midori . Keynote speakers included Kawase Naomi, one of Japan's most important filmmakers, and Professor Keiko McDonald of Pittsburgh University, which held a similar conference in conjunction with ours. A lively group of scholars, students, and filmmakers from Japan, Canada, Austria, Belgium, and the U.S. gathered to hear speakers and discuss papers and films in both English and Japanese, often with simultaneous interpretation. The topics were wide-ranging, and various filmmakers spoke about their work, often in a very personal way. It was a rewarding event for the participants, and there are hopes of holding a similar conference in the future, perhaps on the wider topic of Gender and Film.
