Extractions: Though past efforts to link illegal child pornography and legal adult entertainment have long used anonymous testimonials and petitions and research from conservative think tanks, the tactics have gained increased impetus under the current Republican administration and its socially conservative policies. A potent example of these evolved tactics can be found on the American Family Association's Website. There, a petition urges Yahoo! Inc. to "get out of the pornography business and the U.S. Department of Justice to prosecute them if they continue to flaunt their disregard of federal and state laws." It then promises to "deliver this petition to Yahoo! Inc. CEO Terry Semel and U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft." The petition continues: "The failure of the Clinton administration to enforce the law has led to a proliferation of obscenity, both online and off. We are particularly concerned about the safety of our children on the Internet, where they're subjected to child pornography and solicitation in a massive way. Yahoo! is one of the world's largest Internet portals, and we believe they should be investigated for federal child pornography/obscenity violations as well as facilitation of prostitution. We implore the U.S. Department of Justice Department to use its resources in combating this cyberattack on our nation's children."

Extractions: The ALT-tag allows for a text description of a graphic to reside beneath the actual graphic. This text description is not visible to the sighted user, but is invaluable in describing the image to a text-based user. For example: When using banners with animated text (or any graphics or movies that need lengthy descriptions), the use of description tags (D-tags) are a good alternative to the length restrictive ALT-tag. A D-tag is a capital "D" that appears next to or below an image, that is a link to a page with a description of the graphic. Because D-tag descriptions appear on their own page, they can be as long as the author needs them to be. Therefore, users can receive more information about the physical description of a graphic image than the ALT-text allows.

Extractions: In June, the David Bohnett Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California announced the creation of the Bohnett Attorney at the ACLU of Southern California, a staff attorney position that will focus on gay and lesbian civil rights litigation. It is the only dedicated position to be funded thus far by the year-old foundation, which was created by Internet entrepreneur and Geocities founder David Bohnett with an endowment of $32 million. The Bohnett Foundation dedicates its resources based on a founding vision of investing in social change. Gay and lesbian civil rights have long been a priority for Bohnett, who traces the inspiration for Geocities to his own experience as a gay man. ãMy passion for the idea of online communities, my idea for giving away free home pages, came from my own experience . . . It was through my personal experience of coming out that I recognized how important it was to give everyone on the Internet that same chance to speak up about who they are - to give a voice to their hopes, their dreams and their passions.ä The ACLU/SCâs inaugural Bohnett Staff Attorney will be Martha Matthews. She joins the ACLU after years of public interest litigation on behalf of youth and low-income families, most recently as a staff attorney at the National Youth Law Center, where she engaged in impact litigation and legislative advocacy to improve the foster care system and to improve delivery of services to adolescents.

Extractions: Delaware What Are Continuing Care Retirement Communities? Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) offer seniors long-term contracts that guarantee lifelong shelter and access to specified health care services. Depending on the contract, the entrance fee may be nonrefundable, refundable on a declining basis over time, partially refundable, or fully re-fundable. Extractions: Elder Law The practice of "elder law"- law related to the concerns of the elderly - is a fast-growing specialization. Actually, elder law encompasses a variety of fields of law. The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, a professional association, lists the following areas: Estate planning, Health insurance selection, claims, and appeals, Social Security and disability claims and appeals, Preservation and/or transfer of assets, Disability planning, Conservatorship and guardianship, Living trusts, Probate, Administration and management of trusts and estates, Long-term care and/or admission to lifecare communities and nursing homes, Age discrimination, Retirement planning and benefits, Elder abuse, Fraud recovery, Health law. The National Academy says that elder law attorneys, besides being knowledgeable about appropriate areas of law, "take into account and empathize with the true physical and mental difficulties that often accompany the aging process." Most elder law attorneys do not specialize in all areas of the law. It is important to ask a lot of questions to find out if a particular attorney is suitable for your needs. Ask how long the attorney has been practicing elder law, what areas he or she specializes in, what the fees for services are, and what information you should bring to the initial meeting.

In a 21-day tour to promote firearm safety and distribute 25,000 free gun locks, the program will visit communities throughout Iowa with its mobile unit. Iowa residents will be able to pick up a free firearms safety kit with gun lock and view a display of safe storage equipment when the tour is in their area. US Attorney Charles Larson, US Attorney Steve Colloton and the Iowa law enforcement community have partnered with Project HomeSafe to distribute the gun locks across the Hawkeye State. The cable-style gun lock fits many different types of firearms. Additionally, the lock requires that the firearm be unloaded before being installed - an added safety benefit of the Project HomeSafe lock. Project HomeSafe was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and is funded by the firearms industry and a $4.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The program, which plans to distribute 3,000,000 firearm safety kits nationally through 2002, has been endorsed by the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors (NCLG) and is widely supported by law enforcement.

The arrests are part of Operation Ore - the UK wing of a huge American inquiry codenamed Candyman. Ten state and local law enforcement agencies will receive nearly $2.5 million to help combat Internet crimes against children, announced Deputy Attorney General Eric H. Holder. This announcement was made at an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) law enforcement training seminar held at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children The grants were awarded by the Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) under its ICAC Task Force program. With these new grants, there are now 30 ICAC task forces nationwide. New ICAC grantees include law enforcement agencies in Alabama, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Kansas, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma and Wyoming. OJJDP had earlier awarded a total of $8.5 million of Fiscal Year 1998 and 1999 funds to 20 ICAC task forces through startup and continuation grants. "Keeping children safe online is no less important then keeping them safe in schools or on the streets," said Holder. "This can be a difficult challenge, but these grants will provide states and localities with the tools and skills to investigate, prosecute and prevent Internet crimes against children."

Extractions: The District Attorneys Office works in cooperation with local police to investigate and prosecute hate crimes and criminal violations of civil rights. Hate crimes threaten the very foundation on which our country was created: equality for all. Hate crimes are criminal acts against people or property that are motivated by prejudice based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or disability. These include violent assaults and harassment, vandalism and graffiti. Massachusetts has a number of civil and criminal laws that specifically apply to hate crimes. The District Attorney's Office has the power to prosecute hate crimes as criminal violations. The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office has the power to seek a civil injunction against anyone who is interfering with another person's civil rights. Hate crimes have historically been underreported. This gives hate groups and individuals the mistaken impression that they will not be held accountable for their crimes. Hate crimes are serious offenses. Please help us help you. If you or anyone you know is a victim of a hate crime, we encourage you to report it to your local police.
