In 1905 he founded the celebrated Workers Symphony Concerts and in 1919 he was appointed Director of the 'Sozialdemokratische Kunststelle', which enabled him to develop a dynamic programme of artistic events. In a situation of increasing polarization between Right and Left, he promoted inclusive forms of a cultural activity. The esteem in which he was held by contemporaries is reflected in the collection of eighty-eight literary, artistic and musical dedications which was presented to him in 1924 on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday. This collection, which Bach brought with him to Britain, forms a unique time capsule of Viennese cultural life."

People faced upheaval, change, confusion, and ambiguity in almost all areas of their lives geography, politics, economics, technology, medicine, identity, and sexuality. Anti-Semitism and misogyny, for example, were simply a part of life and coexisted with Zionism and an active Women's Movement. Everyday concerns with such issues, as well as with the workers movement, increasing industrialization, and nationalism, are reflected in the artistic products of the time in ambivalent and complicated ways that we will describe and discuss. Art, literature, philosophy, music, architecture, and film not only reflected the thrills and trials of social, political, and cultural change but they themselves were also undergoing radical changes from within in genre and form.

Extractions: Austrians have many of the same interests as Americans. They love music, sports, shopping and other popular activities. Austrians often listen to popular American and European music, as there are few modern Austrian groups. Many Austrians take interest in German cultural activities, as they are similar people. Folk dancing is a large part of Austrian culture, and is a popular hobby for all ages. There are many types of traditional dance, in cluding the well-known waltz and polka. Many special ceremonial dances are practiced in groups, such as the "Schuhplattler", the "Perchtentanz", and the "Tracht." Participating in a band is also a popular hobby. Most towns have local brass bands which hold seasonal concerts (Vienna Online, 2001).
