Many famous aces are featured including Johnny Johnson, Laddie Lucas, Bob Tuck, Douglas Bader etc... However, many lesser pilots are included as well. The biographies also represent pilots who flew for Coastal, Fighter, and Bomber Commands. ISBN: 1 5575 0222 6 Paul Brickhill's classic biography of Britain's most famous pilot, the legendary Douglas Bader has lost none of its charm. I first read this one about 20 years ago and finally got around to re-reading it for the Booklist. Bader's story makes for one of the best aviation biographies available. He lost both legs in a flying accident in 1931. How he overcame this handicap and entered the pilot ranks of the RAF is one of the most inspiring stories of WWII. Bader is indominatable, and Brickhill clearly has a great respect for his subject. Sometimes, the author gives Bader more credit than he's due (for example, he credits Bader with creating the "finger 4" formation) but overall the praise is justified. Bader was a facinating individual, and Brickhill showcases the man to effect.
