4-0 out of 5 stars Less than what I expected, but still okay.
I was expecting a bigger book, about the size of my Roget's Thesaurus. This dictionary of abbreviations is only 5.75" tall and 4.25" wide, small enough to fit into a front pocket of my jeans. It has 20,000 entries and 294 pages.

Pros: Easily stored, easily portable, eye-pleasing green cover (matches amazon's image), inexpensive, has been somewhat useful
Cons: This is not a definitive dictionary of abbreviations. It has not included a number of abbreviations that I have encountered. On the other hand, it has had some entries that I did not expect it to have.

I thought about buying a dictionary of abbreviations while reading Jeffrey Deaver (the author of Bone Collector, which was made into a Denzel Washingtong movie). For an author of fiction, he uses an unusual number of abbreviations, though I suppose you don't need a dictionary for most of them. Either he explains them, or you get the gist of their meaning from the context. Some of his abbreviations are included in this dictionary, some are not. But some of Deaver's abbreviations are rather private (or maybe the word "esoteric" is appropriate), and I really don't expect any dictionary of abbreviations to include them.

I suspect that no single volume will have all the abbreviations that everyone is looking for, but I think there are bigger dictionaries of abbreviations that have many more entries than this small one has. But then you wouldn't want to try to carry those around in your pocket or your purse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Test Your Abbreviation Skills
I always wondered what AT&T stands for and when I bought THE AMERICAN HERITAGE ABBRIVIATIONS DICITIONARY I found out what it meant, American Telephone & Telegraph Business. These and other everyday abbriviations you come accross can be disphered by this small interesting dictionary.I truly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I own it, I love it!! Could not code without it!!
This book has been a big help to me in my coding career. I use it almost everyday depending on how the doctors write their orders. I went without it for a few years and when I finally bought it I wondered what was I doing without it.

I recently purchased Medical Abbreviations ISBN 9780931431135 which has only 28,000 medical abbreviations because I thought I lost my Jablonski book. However, when I found the Jablonski medical abbreviations book in my desk drawer at work, I wish I could send the one with 28,000 medical abbreviations back because Jablonski has over 55,000 abbreviations. However, I am keeping them both and hoping that the one by Neil M. Davis will be useful somehow.

5-0 out of 5 stars good all around reference
I researched many different books and choose this one.It is the most comprehensive acronym/abbreviation book that I have been able to find.I've been waiting for the latest version to be published and have not been dissapointed. It is all that I expected and is among the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cutting It Short
I do not think that I will ever outgrow the need for Jablonski's book despite how medicine will evolve through the years. There will always be someone writing a medical term either as an acronym or abbreviation, and I will refer to Jablonski in order to understand what was written.

That's the positive side of this book. On the other side there are a couple of things that need to be mentioned. One is that for all of the definitions that Jablonski gives, there are still others that he left out. For example, take the acronym RAD. Jablonski gives about ten meanings, but "reactive attachment disorder" is not one of them.

The second is that Jablonski does not explain his definitions. If one does not understand that "reactive attachment disorder" refers to a malfunction in the bonding between a parent and a child, one will have to seek another source.

This book is great at explaining acronyms and abbreviations. But as far as what they mean, this book is cutting it short.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up-to-date reference for MTs
This book just came out, so it's really up-to-date; the info is thorough and comprehensive, and I've only run across a couple of unusual abbreviations/acronyms that haven't been in here.Well worth the purchase price and invaluable to MTs and anyone dealing with medical documents!

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite good, but a few typos here and there
This book would turn out to be a great book without the TYPOS... It has extensive coverage on ATM, Frame Relay and other telecommunication-only terms... Many "NEW" Terms and Acronyms are included for example 3G Mobile stuff... which isnt much of a surprise since it was first published in January 2001...
My advice? wait for the Second Edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars For your mom, maybe!
This book has failed to define anything useful for me. It has very few terms for the number of pages, and the two sentence long definitions seem to be written for people outside of the computer industry. Not helpful at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more information to really be usefull.
This book is a handy reference manual to have around. With over 400 pages of terms, the information is a surface type of format, only giving the basic amount necessary.

From A to Z there are terms like ANSI, CDR, ELAN, ISDN, MUX, NAM, POTS, SMB, UDP and XID. Also there is a section strictly devoted to Cisco terms from CID, CNSI, EIRGP, FSIP, ISL, SDLC, TRIP and IRGP are but as few of the terms.

There could be a whole lot more added to this book including pictures of some things, a cd rom with an e-version of the book. Overall the value may not be worth the price. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This dictionary was produced in response to the rapidly increasing amount of quasi-industrial jargon in the field of information technology, compounded by the fact that these somewhat esoteric terms are often further reduced to acronyms and abbreviations that are seldom explained. Even when they are defined, individual interpretations continue to diverge.

Until now the codes have been reproduced in separate (language) publications: there is no universal listing in alphabetical order that covers the English, French, Spanish and German languages. This dictionary sets out the English, French, Spanish and German alternatives as a single, merge-sorted whole.

Today, most of the codes have passed into the public domain, simply because they exist in most of the telecommunications systems installed throughout the developed (and developing) world and are largely known to most of those who work in that particular area. However, foreign variants often defy even the most astute observer. This dictionary seeks to clarify this bewildering situation as much as possible. The 26,000 definitions set out here, drawn from some 16,000 individual cybernyms, cover computing, electronics, telecommunications (including intelligent networks and mobile telephony), together with satellite technology and Internet/Web terminology.

Annex I lists some of the innumerable file types found in the filing systems of computers using powerful desktop managers and Annex II lists the abbreviations of country names found in universal resource locators (URL).

Elsevier's Dictionary of Cybernyms is a useful tool for translators, students, universities and computer enthusiasts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but the price is incomprehensible
You would think that at $200 this is some kind of spectacular abbreviations dictionary. Not so! While it is quite good and was clearly compiled carefully - more so than many of the other similar dictionaries - I cannot understand what the publisher was thinking to price it at at least $150 more than any other similar reference. It has an enormous number of entries and is pretty accurate in terms of the correct formatting of abbreviations and symbols. One thing I found peculiar is that repeatedly, the author forgets that it is an abbreviatins dictionary and suddenly includes long lists of the meanings of words, like a regular word dictionary. For example, for the word "phobia" -- nothing to do with the abbreviation for phobia -- there are 3 single-spaced, double-columned pages of different kinds of phobias and what they mean. Also, for abbreviations that have multiple definitions, the author uses such strange and complicated punctuation that it is hard to understand where one definition ends and the next begins. On the whole, this is a good dictionary but there are others that are just as good for $170 less ... Read more
