Product Description
In 1916 Bertrand Russell was prosecuted and fined for publishing (in defence of a conscientious objector) 'statements likely to prejudice the recruiting and discipline of His Majesty's forces.' He was almost immediately afterwards dismissed from his Lectureship at Trinity College, Cambridge, by the College Council. This expulsion provoked a storm of protest and the true facts of the case became obscured by misconceptions, prejudices and uninformed gossip, to the discredit of the College. In 1942, therefore G. H. Hardy the mathematician printed for private circulation to another generation of Fellows at Trinity a full account of the incident in an attempt to explain what really happened. This is now made public. Besides provoking an authoritative record of a celebrated but misinterpreted episode in Russell's eventful academic career, this document contains interesting evidence about attitudes to pacifism in the First World War and in particular about the sympathies of such distinguished colleagues and contemporaries of Russell as Cornford, Housman, McTaggart and Whitehead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Organize Your Thoughts For Any Task At Hand
This book describes the SIX VISUAL MAPS you can use for any writing task. Here they are: Venn Diagram for comparison and contrast; Hierarchical Map for analyzing and classifying; Sequential Chart for cause and effect or events; Cyclical Map for process or continuous ideas; Word Web for interpretations, connections; Plot Diagram for creative writing.

Chapters 1 & 2 are merely for introduction reasons and nothing more.Go straight to Chapter 3 where the VISUAL MAPS are broken down and explained.

There are a lot of books out there to help you make up a story, but there are not many books to help you "STRUCTURE" an "IDEA" for that story. This book helps a ton!Visual Writing presents six different visual maps you can use, but one in particular is the Plot Diagram which is used for creative writing.I recommend you choose the visual map you are more comfortable with.

This book has helped me a great deal and I would recommend it to anyone I know.If someone can't pick up what is in this book my guess would be that they probably DON'T WANT TO WRITE AT ALL.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book did not help my students
I am an 8th grade language arts teacher at Washington Junior High School and I just want to say that this book did not help my students in any way. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
This is a great book for kids getting ready to face four years (or more!) of college. It's filled with emotion, ups and downs, happy times and frustrating times.I recommend it for parents getting ready to send their child off to college as well. Author does a fantastic job of describing characters--I felt like they were people I actually met.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age at UCLA
A very sensitive read into the author's personal experiences while attending UCLA.The passage of adolescence to manhood is documented through the author's aspirations and expectations of university life.I enjoyed the focus on the development of friendships as well as the search for meaningful love.Although this takes place in a college setting, the characters and themes are universal. The book was well written and flowed beautifully.I look forward to a sequel!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost and Found at UCLA
I found "North Campus Days" to be an interesting in-depth look at one man's coming of age amid the hustle and bustle of a large university. The author starts at the beginning by expressing his fears of the huge institution as he approaches it alone on the first day and, from there, brings you into his struggle to find where he belongs. He describes the loneliness, acceptance, friendships, loves, wins, losses, challenges and changes that lead him, after four years, to graduation. He tells you how, through his determination, he not only succeeds scholastically, but also personally by accumulating a diverse yet close-knit group of friends. His main objective, however, continues to elude him... ... Product Description
Illustrated with 200 vintage photographs, references, index
, Michigan State College: John Hannah and the Creation of a World University, 1926 1969 is the second volume in the 3 volume Sesquicentennial history of Michigan State University. Preceded by Michigan Agricultural College: The Evolution of a Land-Grant Philosophy, 1855 1925, this second volume explores the Hannah years.

Today, Michigan State University cannot be separated from the enormous influence of one man, John Hannah, who steered its growth, academic programs, influence, and international prestige. During his tenure as Michigan State College and Michigan State University president, the land-grant institution grew from an enrollment of just over 6,000 to just under 40,000. This dramatic increase necessitated an extensive building program. The curriculum was also upgraded and modified. In 1944, the Basic College, a national prototype, was established to provide instruction to incoming students. Other innovations included Adult Education (1951), the International Program (1950s), MSU Oakland University (1959), and the creation of a medical program (1960s). As the twelfth president of Michigan State University, John Alfred Hannah served from 1941 to 1969. His tenure was characterized by the unparalleled growth of the university, in the size of the campus, enrollments, political controversy, and achievements. ... Read more

Fordham University is the quintessential American-Catholic institution--and one now looked upon as among the best Catholic universities in the country. Its story is also the story of New York, especially the Bronx, andFordham's commitment to the city during its rise, fall, and rebirth. It's a story of Jesuits, soldiers, alumni who fought in World Wars, chaplains, teachers, and administrators who made bold moves and big mistakes, ofpresidents who thought small and those who had vision. And of the first women, students and faculty, who helped bring Fordham into the 20th century. Finally it's the story of an institution's attempt to keep its Jesuitand Catholic identity as it strives for leadership in a competitive world. Combining authoritative history and fascinating anecdotes, Schroth offers an engaging account of Fordham's one hundred thirrty-seven years--here, updated, revised, and expanded to cover the new presidency of Joseph M. McShane, S.J., and the challenges Fordham faces in the new century. ... Read more

Product Description
Time In Question follows a college freshman through his first semester.A right of passage when what were once facts, or at least reliable anecdotes, heard from well-meaning parents and friends very quickly become absolute myth, totally out of touch with today. The many frightening and exciting aspects of college are discussed, always with questionable humor and a total lack of respect.

The backdrop for this merciless glimpse into higher education is Mourning College, dedicated to the pursuit of glorified, self-indulged “excellence.”Professors enjoy inflicting the most pain and suffering on students’ mental and physical states daily.Lackluster sport teams are cheered to ever lesser heights by overweight, underachieving, though often wealthy, alumni. And weekend parties consist of stale beer the froth of which is only freshened by rudderless conversations ultimately leading nowhere but filthy sheets and hangovers. Please read with diligence and leave all humility, sanity, and predispositions well behind.

Be Warned:

“The book will offend a great many people with its tactless, senseless attacks on various groups, all for the sake of “humor.””

“Everyone else will find the book insulting at best, and slanderous at worst.”

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweedish
Time In Question is a hilarious tale about young college freshmen and their odd experiences and random thoughts. The story focuses on Sebastian, a sarcastic and sometimes bitter college freshman, who comes to realize the inhumanity of the real world and most importantly the inhumanity of college classes and professors. This book will definitely keep you laughing unless you're one of those "PC" people who don't laugh at anything because to them everything is offensive and demeaning. Either way, it is an intriguing insight into the college student's mind and the mindless banter that occurs between college roommates or even ordinary friends. If there is one critique I have about this book, it would be the lack of deep thought or emotion exuded from the characters, which could have nicely replaced some of the ranting that can get redundant at times. Overall, I think this author has great potential and this being his first book means he can only get better. So take the "Sweet Ride" and enjoy Time in Question...and if you want to know what "Sweet Ride" means, you'll just have to read and find out.

Product Description
Like any great university, the University of Illinois owes its prominence to the excellence of its faculty. In Lillian Hoddeson's No Boundaries, twenty-three scholars provide easily accessible vignettes about University of Illinois faculty who have made major contributions to their fields, to knowledge, and to the world. Here are many of the most inspiring--and often most amusing--people whose work elevated the University of Illinois into a world leader in a variety of areas. Their lives demonstrate again and again that the work of the University takes place as much away from campus as on it: Oscar Lewis's pioneering studies of poverty in Mexico, for example, Ralph Grim's geological work in Africa, and Nathan Newmark's architectural work in Mexico City. Here also are insights into the remarkable careers of classicist William Oldfather, chemist Roger Adams, the amazing double Nobel Prize-winning physicist John Bardeen, and accounts of Katharine Sharp's work that made the University of Illinois Library into a national treasure. Also included are the legendary contributions of the University of Illinois to computer science, biochemistry, history, literary study, and electronic music. ... Read more

It is not easy raising a family and balancing work and personal commitments in academia, regardless of gender. The diverse contributors in Papa, PhD seek to expand their children's horizons, giving them the gifts of better topic sentences and a cosmopolitan sensibility. They consider the implications of gender theory and queer theory-even Marxist theory-and make relevant theoretical connections between their work and the less abstract, more pragmatic, world of fathering. What resonates is the astonishing range of forms that fatherhood can take as these dads challenge traditional norms by actively questioning the status quo. ... Read more

"One of the most thoughtful and honest accounts ever written by a young Army officer confronting all the tests of life." -Bob Woodward

In this surprise bestseller, West Point grad, Rhodes scholar, Airborne Ranger, and U. S. Army Captain Craig Mullaney recounts his unparalleled education and the hard lessons that only war can teach. While stationed in Afghanistan, a deadly firefight with al-Qaeda leads to the loss of one of his soldiers. Years later, after that excruciating experience, he returns to the United States to teach future officers at the Naval Academy. Written with unflinching honesty, this is an unforgettable portrait of a young soldier grappling with the weight of war while coming to terms with what it means to be a man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This is the best book I have ever read about what it takes to become an Army officer, and what it means to be one. It's also the best book I have read (and there have been many excellent ones) about what kind of people make up today's U.S. Army, both officer and enlisted. As a veteran of the Vietnam era, I am in total awe of these young soldiers.Every potential officer should read this book, to help them understand what it means to lead troops, whose lives and safety are placed in their care, and how to prepare for the task.In fact, every American should read it, to help them understand and appreciate the young soldiers who are fighting our wars, and dying in them.As at least one reviewer pointed out, the author seems a little immature in his judgments about his estranged father. But this is simply the way people are, the way they think, when they are in their 20s (and sometimes when they are much older).Don't be distracted by such a small part of the book; just enjoy it and absorb all the insights that it provides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing self evaluation, educated story
If you are considering to read this book, i completely recommend it to anyone that currently serving in the Arm Forces or "en route" and family related with military personnel. This book it is not the tactics military focus story, This book talks about what it is been living, hurting and figthing internal and personal wars inside of a Soldier's mind and heart. This books shows a hint of wounds and signs in a explicit way about a Soldier, a leader, and as a familiy member. It will be excellent for military wife/Husbands, to understand the picture, endurance and projection of their spouses when they are in front of their Soldiers and project the example to lead to their fellow and subordinates Soldiers. This book is a life living experience by the author, but somehow can reflect a little with every military experience. the reason i mark the book 4 Stars quality is because of experiences differences among the entire military. For example... enlistment and basic training is more realistic and painful in my own opinion than the first two years at West Point playing like Soldiers.

1-0 out of 5 stars boring!
Kept waiting for something--anything --to happen. Perhaps 31 months in Viet Nam made me cynical but losing a couple guys is to be expected in warfare. Four years of West Point and Ranger School and he wasn't prepared for casualties?

Believe the book show that there really is a brotherhood of ring knockers. They always said in the Army that West Pointers were taken care of--in and out of the Army. Doubt if a ROTC officer would have had this published.

Compare it to my book--Xin Loi, Viet Nam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book, Outstanding Life, and Achievements.
One day when I was in Cape Cod, I was walking around, and found a brand new book store. I was browsing through the military section, and stumbled across this fantastic find. I read a few pages in, and I could not get off of it. I bought it immediately, and returned home to RI to finish it. I later found out that Mr. Mullaney was from RI himself, and the priest of my old school, was the man to marry him, and his wife.

Mr. Mullaney describes his extraordinary life in three phases. Student, Soldier, Veteran. He hooks you in with an extremely interesting schooling expierence at Westpoint, then leads you into Ranger School, and then into Oxford. In Soldier you learn about Mr. Mullaney's life changing experience in Afghanistan (and Iraq, I believe?). He then concludes the work of his life in Veteran.

This is a must read book for all who are interested in reading an amazing story of a soldier, and hero to our country.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and self absorbed boring book
After reading all the glowing reviews for this book, I had high expectations.I am a reader who usually enjoys war narratives, and 'experiencing' things and places through books. However, I thought the book was heavy on boring detail, and the interesting parts could have been done in short story format. The pages and pages of details about such minor things as meals, weather, clothes, cooking, boring recounted conversations, haircuts, whatever, all should have been greatly condensed.Nothing really happens until at least 1/2 way through the book, except the author's education at West Point and time spent at Oxford...nice, but really not interesting enough to recount to the world in book form.In fact, very little happens in the second half of the book. The author does part of a tour, and then spends the rest of his time behind a desk. There must be thousands of other soldiers who had more interesting tours of duty, sacrificed more, and were braver than the author. This guy just happened to be one of the few who wrote a book, and somehow managed to get it published. After finishing the last boring page, I felt like I deserved some sort of civilian purple heart for making it to the end. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Witty, and fast-scripted tell-all
Lynn Barber's life and relationships are effected by one two year affair with an older man. While the memoir transports us from the beginning of Barber's existence to her later years in life, it is this juicy bit ( of 30 or so pages ) which held my rapt attention: especially as I so enjoyed the recent film.

Barber's straightforward tell-all reveals itself in gossipy slops of sentences. She refers to her awakening "before the advent of feminism" in great detail. One day Lynn Barber accepts a ride from a stranger and her life is catapulted into a world of gloss and glitter far from the spires of Oxford her schoolwork is preparing her for.

And while this life and cultural education seems grand in its origins; she becomes mightily bored with Simon, Helen and Danny and trips here and there.

Lynn Barber is a winsome narrator whose stark and vivid recounts of her life kept me raptly attentive:

"I felt a sense of utter betrayal", she explains when her father encourages her marriage to Simon, the older seducer, rather than continue to pursue the Oxford education previously encompassing her every action and movement, " as if I'[d spent eighteen years in a convent and then the Mother Superior had said, ` Of course, you know, God doesn't exist'"

When she discovers Simon's secret and their impending marriage is impossible, Barber speaks to the betrayal of adults in her mature young life. Everyone, it seems, has conned her in the way Simon sneakily dealt in his paintings and estates.

If the adult world she so hankers after ( for all of its sophistication, class and glorious mystery ) is indeed a revelation of how societal dictation and outward appearance and skimping to save face; why grow up at all?Why not wallow in Camus, dapples of French perfume, long-handled cigarettes and the promise of an imaginary tomorrow.

From the beginning, Barber mentions her disdain with her accent: how elocution immediately placed her in Twickenham and amidst a society she felt beyond. Simon's education, we learn ( of menus and Bergman films and weekends away) prepared her for Oxford; but also made her especially wary of others. Trust undeveloped and misplaced was the ramification of her awakening.

This brief and heated and remarkably unlikely affair informs Barber's relationships, her ideology and her life choices proving that what strings through our youth is sewn into our fabric of adulthood.

It was this aspect of the novel and her retelling of her parent's strict regime and her father's reserved nature ( due to a harsh childhood) that mostly kept me attentive.

Well, that, and a gorgeously rendered 1960s Britain...

an easy "all-in-one-go" read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Quick Read
This book was a good airplane read. I usually fall asleep on airplanes but this book kept me awake and interested. Aside from that I loved the characters and the witty writing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but nothing special either
As the majority of people who are currently reading An Education, I became interested in this book only because of the Oscar-nominated version of Lynn Barber's affair with an older man - I simply wanted to know if there was more to her story than shown on the big screen. In some ways, there was.

The movie is based on just one chapter of this very short book and, I have to say, the movie makers took quite a few liberties with the story. To my surprise, the real affair wasn't quite as dramatic as portrayed in the adaptation and the heroine wasn't quite that naive or that in love with the man.

As far as the rest of this memoir goes, I probably would have never picked up this book, simply because I have never heard of Lynn Barber before. Barber is evidently a known in some circles interviewer and a journalist. Maybe I am wrong, but aren't you supposed to be a famous person to write and publish an autobiography, otherwise who would care to read about your life? I don't mean that An Education is a bad book, but it is the type of book that any person could write. This memoir is not particularly detailed or mind-blowing, but a succinct story of Barber's life which is pretty much ordinary. It contains a few anecdotes about her affair with a much older man, about her promiscuous youth, of her work at "Penthouse" and other publications, and of her marriage. And that's about it.

Pretty much An Education is an engaging and short life story of a totally insignificant person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
I found this book interesting and engaging. It was a quick read that entertained me for an afternoon. I especially appreciated the way the author described her feelings and relationships with her family, and showed how those feelings educated her in her life.

I won this book as part of the Goodreads giveaway program.

4-0 out of 5 stars great read.

Alumni Cantabrigienses is the biographical dictionary for all students who attended Cambridge University from its beginnings up until 1900. Invaluable to the historian or genealogist, it is often the only source of information available on many lesser-known writers and thinkers (theologians, lawyers, politicians, doctors, scientists, civil servants, and so on), figures whose lifetime achievements it would otherwise be almost impossible to discover.

Containing details of thousands of major and 'minor' British figures covering a 400-year period, the work is divided into two periods (up to 1751 and 1752--1900), with each part arranged alphabetically by surname. Considering the large majority of the educated population of Britain pre-1800 attended either Oxford or Cambridge, Alumni Cantabrigienses is a key source for information on many of the country's most important figures and is cited in most biographical dictionaries whether they be theological, legal, political or philosophical. Regarded as unique and highly accurate, this reference source should be available to all historical and biographical researchers.

This essential work belongs next to Alumni Oxonienses on the reference shelves of every academic and public library. A unique resource, the alphabeticized entry layout gives the following details: Full name; Parentage; Birthplace; Date of birth; Record of their Degrees; Positions held; Honours; Death date; and cross-referencing with other biographical reference works such as obituaries and bibliographies, enabling the researcher to pursue further lines of enquiry.

--unique, primary reference work with details of thousands of famous and lesser-known British people from the Middle Ages up until the end of the Victorian era
--essential companion work to Alumni Oxonienses
--scarce in major libraries with only 500 copies of the original edition printed
--important work for genealogists, biographers, historians and librarians
--cross-references with other biographical reference works
