5-0 out of 5 stars How did this get to Amazon?
This is an item I never expected to see on Amazon. It took me a good deal of sleuthing to find and xerox this paper. Not that I would recommend the reading of it to anyone, however, but it is pure folklore in myrmecology (the study of ants) and in the history of biocontrol. Cook did correctly observe that the so-called kelep was patroling cotton plants (probably attracted by the extra-floral nectaries below the flower), but he did not recognize that he was watching an ant (and ants are easy to recognize). When William Morton Wheeler got wind of this, he had a field day in demolishing poor Cook, both in print and in many talks. The system that Cook described, however, is real: the ant is Ectatomma tuberculatum and it is a predator in vegetation. The KayapĆ³ Indians of the Brazilian Amazon know and respect this ant, even though they plant almost no cotton these days. Ants are, to this day, considered too risky to introduce into new areas for biocontrol: they are too opportunistic. I give this item five stars, but you are in a position to just smile at Cook, Wheeler, the KayapĆ³ Indians, and me. ... Read more
