5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible story.
This story is about a mother who lived in Germany at the time of WW2
Although she faced a difficulty so many times ,she never gave up to love people. She made every effort to save her children andmade many friendships withGerman and helped each other.
I leared a lot of things as a mother and as a person.

5-0 out of 5 stars She Was An Amazing Person
I had Mrs. Ritter for English class at Cobb Middle School in Tallahassee. My two sisters and I all remember her as a formidable woman, strict, fair, and an excellent teacher.I can still clearly remember how excited she was when we listened to the news during her class as John Glenn made his famous first flight.
This is a great book. The details that the author shares in the struggles of her family, and other civilians, to survive the war are fascinating reading. And what Mrs. Ritter had to do to rescue her children was phenomenal, just an amazing read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aurora
Mrs. Ritter was my 8th grade English teacher in Tallahassee.I found this biography highly interesting. In class, she enthralled us with stories of her days in Germany.I enjoyed reading the "untold" aspects of her life there. She was truly a remarkable lady. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1910, Orville and Wilbur Wright opened the first American civilian flight school in Montgomery, Alabama. The Wright brothers hoped to find a climate warmer and more hospitable to flying than their company base of snowy Dayton, Ohio. Forward-thinking Montgomerians welcomed the Wrights and heralded the school as a way to rise above the shadow of the Civil War. Author Julie Hedgepeth Williams chronicles the short life of this flight school as seen mainly through the eyes of the Alabama press, whose reporting and sometimes misreporting "reflected the misconceptions, hopes, dreams, and fears about aviation in 1910, painting a picture of a time when flight was untested, unsteady, and unavailable to most people." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learning curve
I loved this book especially for the devices it used to bring the reader into the energy and excitement of this unique period of aviation history. The inclusion of so many contemporary news editorials and even cartoons made me feel as if I were one of the citizens of Montgomery experiencing the drama first-hand rather than reading about it a hundred years later. For example, many media illustrations and cartoons of the Wright Flyer accompanied the articles and editorials of the local paper. As the public and journalists began to see the actual machine in operation, these cartoons progressed from wildly inaccurate depictions to sophisticated representations. The cartoons expressed visually what words alone could not have done in demonstrating Montgomery's learning curve on aviation. The first experiments in night flying, conducted over the fields surrounding Montgomery, were fascinating to read about. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Early Aviation History
A little-known historical event occurred in 1910 at Montgomery, Alabama. On the eve of the one-hundredth anniversary of this event, Dr. Julie Hedgepeth Williams has published a book detailing factors that changed the course of the state and the nation as well. Her book:"Wings of Opportunity:The Wright Brothers in Montgomery Alabama" captures bits of information obtained mostly from newspaper articles about the first civilian flight school in the nation. After the first successful flight of a "flying machine" in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers took secretive measures to protect their invention until patents could be secured.Efforts were eventually made to find a location more suitable for a flight school than their home in Dayton, Ohio.Because of the flat terrain, low average wind speeds, longer spring and summer seasons offered by the Montgomery area, the Wright brothers opened their first flying school in February 1910 on the outskirts of the city in the area that has now become Maxwell Air Force Base.

Dr. Williams did an excellent job of piecing together sketchy facts from newspaper articles that were penned by reporters who, like everyone else of the time, knew virtually nothing about an airplane or how to fly one. In so doing, Dr. Williams not only captured essential elements regarding the beginnings of the air industry, but also interesting little-known facts about the City of Montgomery and the State of Alabama as well. The book is illustrated with numerous pictures from 1910.Published by New South Books only in paperback, the book is available for a modest price and is a "must" for anyone interested in either aviation and/or Alabama history.

Glenn Walden, Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first civilian flying school
This is an excellent book about the first civilian flying school, and the elaborate strategies of its hosting city (Montgomery, Alabama) to portray itself as an advanced, modern city.
The attempts by the local media to take advantage of the prestige of hosting the great "modern" advances of flight are interesting and frequently comedic. This concept of publicity and prestige of being associated with "firsts" in flight, are topics frequently glossed over in most works dealing with the early days of flight; the author, however, analyzes these aspects in detail without ever losing sight of the personal histories and stories of the students and teachers working at the school.
This book is not merely factual; it has the charm and wit of a tale told by a storyteller; the author is both a talented researcher and writer, rare qualities found all too infrequently in nonfiction works.
I strongly recommend this informative and entertaining work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating piece of history
Who knew that the nation's first flying school was in Montgomery, Alabama? This is a well written page turner about something you probably have never heard about before. The Wright Brothers were looking for a place to establish their first flying school, one that would train the teachers of future flying schools and establish the airplane's place in history.Montgomery, Alabama was trying to shake off its 19th century history and become known as a place looking to the future. For a brief time the Wright Brothers and this new south city worked together, both with an eye to establishing their reputations in the world.

This fascinating book looks at the first flying school from a totally unexpected angle that will be of interest to both those interested in the early history of flight and those interested in the social history of the south as it emerged from the Reconstruction era.

2-0 out of 5 stars Consensus History at its Best
Wings of Opportunity does a fine job in describing why the Wright Company operated a flying school in Montgomery, Alabama, for a few months in 1910.However, it does a horrible job at confronting the social history of the area, completely ignoring the African American presence, instead repeatedly describing the city as "progressive."Did the Wrights - who weren't segregationists - have any African American employees? What did African Americans (a sizable part of the local population) think of aviation and the flying school?Questions such as these aren't even broached by this book, which makes it a perfect piece of history from the 1950s and a terrible piece of history for the 2010s. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Talent
This book is worth the small price for Chapter 6 alone, "There is a Tide..." which contains exceptional descriptions and descriptors of a Southern spring.

Viola Goode Liddell is a gift. She describes the times in which she lived--the depression era South, Alabama in particuar--with rare talent. In addition to her descriptions and memories of small and seemingly insignificant details that mesh out her stories and give them breath, life and reality, she mixes the humor and pathos of life with a deft, but appropriate touch...

This book is true, an autobiographical look at the life and hard times of a grass widow teacher--grass widow being a woman who has voluntarily left her husband as compared to a sod widow, a woman who has buried her husband--in the hard depresssion times of rural Alabama.

Some may view her as an orginal women's libber, but she was just a good woman escaping a bad situation, doing the best she can do...it makes it nice and even more readable that this story has a good, though not perfect, ending.

Viola Goode Liddell deserves a place along side great Southern Ladies and great Southern Writers. This is not her best, that honor belongs to either "A Place of Springs," or "With a Southern Accent," but this book is well worth the price and short time it will take to read and enjoy it. ...
