Product Description
Libby Riddles wanted an adventure. At the age of 16 she left home for the snowy frontiers of Alaska, the Last Frontier. There her love of animals drew her to the sport of sled dog racing. When she entered the Iditarod, the famous marathon from Anchorage to Nome, she was just another Iditarod Nobody. Twelve hundred miles later, having conquered blizzards, extreme cold, and exhaustion, she and her dogs crossed the final stretch of sea ice, miles ahead of the nearest competitor...and suddenly she realised: I will be the first woman to win the Iditarod. This is the story of a courageous woman and her heroic dogs. This is the story of Libby Riddles's adventure. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gee (Right) On, Libby!
Libby Riddles is the first woman to win the Iditarod sled dog race in 1985.This is her race autobiography.Thru her retelling of the tale, readers learn about the race, the dogs, the weather, and all the little hardships that go along with the Iditarod trail. From an old washing machine in the middle of the trail, moose carcasses, negative 52 degree weather, broken sleds, doggy frostbite, dogs in heat, and even bootie piracy(I mean dog booties), Libby experiences a lot of bad luck and not only lives to tell, but crosses the finish line first, two and a half hours before anyone else.

It was actually her braving a nasty storm and the Northern Winds that got her ahead. She was the only one to dare it and it worked.Wow.Pretty amazing.Libby gives most of the credit to her dogs tho.I really liked learning about the dogs and their different personalities and how she determined who goes where in the line up.

It fails to hit the five star mark due to layout issues more than writing. It is done in a "newspaper" column like format and most of the time, half the page (the inner column) is a complete blank. It makes the book appear twice as long as it is.I wouldn't have minded so much if they had filled in the blank spaces with pictures.Preferrably dog pictures or the pictures that Libby says she took.(Where are the waterfall pictures???)

Nevertheless, a fun and educational read.Gee (Right) on, Libby!

5-0 out of 5 stars Race Across Alaska
Really interesting book for those who love real life adventures and/or animals. The reader really gets a feel for what the racers go through while on the trail. I actually had a chance to meet the author last year. She had plenty of great stories to tell about her life with her dogs in Alaska.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting and Hysterical Read
I loved this book!Every chapter being the description of one leg of the Iditarod Race, Libby Riddles brings the reader along for a roller coaster ride of excitement, emotion, and a love of dogs. After every chapter I would have to describe in detail what happened to my own dogs' grandparents and relay the anecdotes of her endearing (yet sometimes wild) sled dogs (we have two huskies as well, so I could relate tremendously). The book was really an insider's guide to the Iditarod and sled dog racing culture.I was in awe of how helpful and hospitable the residents of Alaska were towards the racers and their dogs, as well as how helpful the racers were to one another. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to read it again! (And probably will within a year)

3-0 out of 5 stars an inspiring book
i found this book an amazing story about a womens courage to do something not many women did. do the iditerod. i think that her courage shows through and shows men that girls are just as powerful as they are. even today the world see's women as delicte people who need to be taken care of. but no we are we are strong and powerful and when i read this book i read that message loud and clear.
miss riddles stood out in my mind. i was truly sad to hear of her death. it would have been my dream to meet her and her dogs. when she realized she was going to win i felt excited for her victory and her strentgh. when she died the world lost one amazing women. may she rest in peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Race Across Alaska: First Woman to Win he Iditarod
Libby Riddlesbrings you on the Iditarod trail with her.You will feel her cold, her fatigue and the fur of her dogs whom she loves above all. This is the ultimate armchair adventure. It's incredible top believe that people actually put themselves through this.A bonus feature of this book is the informaive sidebars.I recommend it with five stars. ... Read more

Product Description

Iditarod musher Jessie Arnold is being stalked and terrorized by an anonymous enemy. First, one of her sled dogs is badly injured in a steel trap and an ominous note leaves no doubt that the trap was set with malicious intent. Threatening phone calls and unsigned messages follow -- pressing Alaska State Trooper Alex Jensen to urge Jessie to go into hiding while he tries to track down the source of the threats. Finally, a near fatal car crash convinces Jessie to let Alex fly her to an isolated island more than two hundred miles away.

There on desolate, windswept Kachemak Bay, Jessie hikes the island trails with her lead dog Tank, marveling at the splendor of her solitude. But in a wilderness filled with hazards and hiding places, she soon discovers she is not alone. With Alex searching for a madman hundreds of miles away, Jessie is on her own...playing a deadly game of hide and seek with a killer. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What About Alex?

The story line in Sue Henry's book Deadfall is exciting and frightening. However, I was extremely disappointed in the last two pages of the book. In those pages, Henry has captured the 21st woman who wants everything to be her way. If it were the male character who was saying to the female character that he doesn't want to get married because he wants everything to be perfect, and he is not sure she is perfect enough for him, there would be a howl from female readers. However, Jessie is telling Alex that she is not sure he is good enough for her, and until she decides that--in her unlimited time frame--she will not condescend to marry him. I hope that in some newer book Alex finds a woman who loves him more than she loves herself. Jessie is never going to find happiness with anyone who doesn't love her as much as she does. This is a real turn-off for me. It may be fiction, but it is too close to the sentiments of the 21st century to be comfortable. I doubt if I will read any more of these Alaska books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good premise, poor delivery
DEADFALL was my first exposure to Sue Henry's writings, and probably my last, as well. The plot was well conceived and the location interesting, but the execution left a lot to be desired. The author makes many glaring errors, and the heroine is rather foolishly displayed. Her moronic actions in confrontations with the killer were so frustrating that I kept screaming out loud, "Just shoot him, you idiot! Geez, how stupid are you?". Ms. Henry would do well to hire a ghostwriter to rewrite this piece. Then perhaps a worthwhile mystery would emerge. For a true master of the mystery genre, try Tony Hillerman's Navajo Mysteries. The audio tapes and CDs from Recorded Books are priceless; pass on the Books On Tape offerings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deadfall
This is an excellent book that is loaded with suspense.I've read most of Sue Henry's Alaska mysteries and loved them all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Deadfall Falls Dead
Once again, the characters are weak; the plot is thin and this mystery has all the flavor of sidewalk chalk.A couple of the dogs surface momentarily but immediately disappear into the blank landscape.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Suspense
I enjoyed this book for the suspense - it had plenty. Jessie shines in this one.I was puzzled by the convoluted motives of the bad guy.I guess Sue Henry wanted to make the book as mysterious as possible.I felt the frustration that the main characters had, but went along with the story anyway. I felt strongly agitated when the bad guy went after the dogs.I would give a lot to have a friend like Tank.:) The ending was really a reach but all's well that ends well.Altogether it was a competent and enjoyable read. On to the next. ... Read more

Product Description
The infectious rhythms of the classic song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas," inspired this clever and charming counting book. Here, the famous "partridge in a pear tree" becomes a "black bear in a spruce tree," while the fifth day of summer in Alaska yields everything from swans and wood frogs to bald eagles and moose. Author Pat Chamberlin-Calamar has spent every summer in Alaska since 1985, and through the book's witty repetitions she conjures a vibrant world of Alaskan fauna. Alaska's 12 Days of Summer is a book that children will want to sing along with again and again. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK shape, but...
I bought this as a gift for my co-worker and myself to give to our boss. I was rather disappointed to find a brown smudge on the inside front cover about the size of a golf ball. I was able to cover it with a bookplate, but wasn't happy that this was necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for younger readers
This is a good book for youngsters who have mastered the basics of reading. (My kindergartener enjoyed it and only needed help here and there with some of the longer, unfamiliar animal names). The story is phrased similarly to the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas". Its repetitive nature is a good way to help youngsters practice reading longer words. It also encorporates counting/numbers and names of animals found in Alaska. At the end of the book there's even written music of the song tune, complete with these "new" Alaskan lyrics. The illustrations are colorful and a treat to look at. This book would be a great addition to a school library or any child's personal collection. ... Read more

Use this valuable knowledge about drug-taking behavior to plan strategies to prevent or reduce drug-taking among youth. The findings from this unique study have important implications for researchers, educators, practitioners, and local and state policymakers and planners for the development of initiatives for addressing smoking, drinking, and drug use among early adolescents and teenagers. The purpose of this informative volume is to further understand drug-taking behavior among adolescents by providing information on the prevalence, correlates, and consequences of drug-taking behavior among a large sample of adolescents. Although the focus is on Alaska, the findings generalize to comparably aged youth in general; moreover, comparisons with findings from national studies and other states provide interesting results. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal novel. Every teenager has to read this
If you're a young adult/older teenager like me then you probably scroll around the internet a lot. I've been finding quotes from this book all over Tumblr, Facebook, etc. so I decided to buy the novel. I was not disappointed in the slightest. It was filled with such fantastic literary inspiration. It's really something else. It contains everything from first love, grief, change and loss. I can without a doubt relate to the main character Pudge in the 'after' section. I won't reveal any spoilers but I went through the exact same thing he did (exactly to the 'T') and went on the same adventure he did. But, like Pudge and The Colonel, I had the exact same results. The book reminded me of this time since the characters reactions were so real and raw and that I found myself having to stop reading and almost cried from the emotion of it all. The situations in the book really brought me back and I felt like I lost my friend again. It's a very heart warming book and it was extremely nostalgic for me--I felt like I like I did when I was an underclassmen in high school (I'm a college student now). I highly recommend this book. I wish I read it as a freshmen when I was in high school. It certainly holds strong life lessons and incredible quotes to live by.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Alaska
The novel,Looking for Alaska, is an excellent young adult novel. It holds your attention as you know something will happen with the characters because of their risk taking behaviors but the author keeps weaving the suspense and building it until the final drop.Very well written. Many will see themselves in this book and wonder how close they came to replicatng what happens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This book was so awesome! It is the craziest most exciting book i think i've ever read. This book is very funny and is sooooo shocking you never know whats coming when u read this book. John Green wrote a epic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your run of the mill coming of age story
This is a book for all ages. Yes, it's characters are teens but the issues in the story are ones that any age can identify with. Feeling left out, social misfits, finding out who you are and who your friends are, feeling accepted, and the BIG one-death and what we believe comes after and how we deal with it. It's characters come alive and time and time again I found myself thinking "I've felt like that, too" You want to become a part of this gang and would be proud to call them your friends. It portrays teens as they really are with smoking, alcohol and sex and how difficult it can be to deal with peer pressure. Most of all it is a story of developing true friendships and how painful losing a friend is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is one of my favorite books for sure. In my opinion no part of the book is boring, its unlike a lot of books that start out very slow and then eventually get interesting. Maybe i'm a baby, but it made me cry, super good book though. I definitely recommend this book, for any ages. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The only redeeming feature here is the detailed description of the Iditarod race. That admittedly interesting aspect must be what made this book an award-winner, for I sure can't see any other reasons. The plot is predictable (even laughable), the characters cardboard, the dialogue wooden, the "romance" sophomoric, and the detective does very little actual detecting. My journey through Sue Henry's work ends here at the first checkpoint.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice to have an Alaska Mystery
I enjoyed this book because of the Iditarod race setting. However, I also find it hard to believe the book won awards.I had trouble keeping the names straight.A list of the characters at the front that I could have referred to would probably have been a big help.

Shortly before reading this book I had watched the 2008 race on NGC (I think it was NGC).This book helped fill-in much of the information about the race that was missing in the TV series. The TV series made it seem much easier than it is.

It was a pleasant and interesting book, but it isn't a book I couldn't put down.Still, I will probably continue reading the series since I bought six of the Alaska Mysteries at the same time.Perhaps the other books will be "page turners".

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Mystery
Sue Henry has done a superb job of bringing Alaska to those of us down here in the lower 48 States, with a mystery spin.

3-0 out of 5 stars cold blooded killer running across Alaska
I picked up this book with the hope of finding a new author for a mystery series I could enjoy.I was not very impressed with the character development, though, so I doubt I will stick with the series.

That said, this book was entertaining in that it took me to places I have never been, and to an event I knew little about except for vaguely remembering it featured on ABC's Wide World of Sports many years ago.The drama of identifying the killer was a bit weaker than I thought it would be, and the motive for the killings was very weak. But it was a fun ride through the snow.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe this won awards
Info about the race was interesting, but as a mystery, it was clunky and labored. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a very interesting book, and I really enjoyed it. You feel as if you are there. It is really amazing what this young woman had to go through. I couldn't put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars How touching
I bet it's been 20 years since I read this book and I often still think of the characters. I am a public school teacher and this taught me an aspect of cultural sensitivity and how kids can be caught between 2 cultures and 2 time periods. Alaska is an exciting place in any time period.

I highly recommend this anyone who enjoys history and a good love story.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
I am an avid reader who focuses more on writing excellence than I do on the plot....a workplace friend handed me a very damaged hardcopy of this book when she returned from visiting Alaska..saying, "read it, I think you'll like it"...Needless to say it did not pique my interest but after keeping it for a few months, I decided to at least take a peek at it before returning it.Several pages convinced me that it was indeed a worthy read and it was one of those books that you can't bear to put down and, toward the end, read slowly because you don't want to part with the characters. The dialog was excellent and having worked in primitive areas myself, I felt Cab, Mr. Vaughn and Titus Paul to be most believable. This is a book to be enjoyed by all ages and I can't wait to gift my friends with copies of it.

When the Water Runs: Growing Up with Alaska

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Wild West, warts and all
This book is a great read. I was swept along by this story of a single woman working in the Alaskan back country. She takes a matter-of-fact approach to all sorts of alarming situations (e.g. being buried in a snowdrift and having a bear and her cub wandering about outside her tent).

A great adventure story. Fascinating snapshots of turn of the century Alaska. Many of the most interesting parts of this book are those which talk about Alaska's relationship with Russia, particularly the power of the Czar and the Russian Orthodox church. Reading about this, Alaska seems more like a colony than a part of Russia. Maybe the Alaska America purchased wasn't Russia's to sell.

The book presents attitudes as they were without varnishing or apology. Some are decidedly racist. Hannah definitely saw her job as 'civilizing' the natives (nobody seems to have asked them if they wanted to be civilized). She talks about communities who lived underground - this was dying out as the US government didn't approve - the story of colonization the world over...

5-0 out of 5 stars She'll Walk You Through the Snow
I fell in love with Alaska as described by Hannah Breece. She told an amazing story of a time that is long gone. She also showed great restraint in not "telling tales" on those who were her contemporaries. Her niece, Jane Jacobs, who compiled and edited her memoirs, fills in the "gaps," after Miss Breece's personal story is complete.I recommend this book to lovers of history, Alaskan history, early American history, education history and those with a romantic notion of how the "good old days," really were. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Northern Wonderland gets a great book
Alaska is a beautiful place which I had the pleasure to visit for an extended amount of time. I discovered that Alaska has a lot going for it, and this book will show you and your students what.

The "Portrait of America" series is a sensational and easy to understand introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Alaska" installment is very good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. The "Culture" section is quite good, but I wish it had dealt more with the older civilizations that had existed before the 18th century.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators. ... Read more

Product Description
In this series for younger boys and girls, each book features cartoon-style illustrations superimposed on vivid full-color photos that show different people in different cultures using different means of travel. The cartoons complementing each photo depict kids with their parents. Each parent is a vehicle driver of one kind or another—but the vehicle type depends entirely on where the story takes place! For instance, Maria is a little girl whose mother is a taxi driver in bustling New York City. Other kids and their parents live in Alaska, and travel by dog sled . . . or in a tropical rain forest, where touring visitors are taken on a safari . . . or in the bush country of Australia's Outback, where the most common way for people to go places is to fly around in light aircraft. The photos on every page capture the contrasting scenic backgrounds and highly individual atmospheres of each book's place. Meanwhile, boys and girls will identify with the cartoon illustrations of kids and parents, as they learn a little bit about how people live and travel in different places. Early-grade teachers will value these wonderfully illustrated books as fine introductions to social studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alaska Kidsnacks Cookbook
I'm a media specialist and I used this book for my first grade's Alaska Day held in the media center.I used several recipes for a cooking station that the students visited. They loved making the recipes because they werefun, easy, and had Alaskan names. They especially loved the snack-- DenaliPeaks.Since the snacks are named after geographic locations, it was agreat way to integrate a geography lesson, too. After we made the snacks, first graders located the town or region that the snack was named on a map.Kudos to the creator of this wonderful cookbook which makes a wonderfulteaching resource on Alaska! ... Product Description
Moose discovers a very big cabbage in his garden that could win first prize at the Alaska State Fair. But there's a problem -- it's so huge he can't lift it! Various animal friends stop to help, and through teamwork and positive attitude, they succeed. An old Russian folktale about a large turnip inspired The Giant Cabbage, but this contemporary version uses verbal and visual twists that showcase its Alaska setting. Comical repetitions, fun words, and vivid animal characters bring the story to life, and there's even a recipe for a scrumptious cabbage stew to be cooked in a giant pot! ... Read more

I bought this for my girlfriend who has grown the largest cabbage in the Alaska, and in United States! She loved it!I'm sure any child would too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and Fun
We live in Anchorage, I found this book down in a Homer bookstore. We love it, the illustrations are great and text is fun, the kids really get into the repetitive words as the various Moose neighbors help him to remove his cabbage to get it to the fair. It even has a Cabbage Soup recipe in the back!

5-0 out of 5 stars A tale of friendship . . .
Whimsical/humorous illustrations, coupled with repetitious text have made this one of my sons favorite books.By the end of our first reading, he could already recite parts of the book to me.

A tale of helping and sharing, with a subtle message of "never give up", this book is perfect for sharing with 3 to 8 year olds.

Be sure to try Moose's Cabbage Soup recipe!

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids can't get enough of this one!
In this fabulous retelling of the Russian folktale, the author combines wonderful repetition (a very effective method, loved by children) with fascinating details of Alaskan life to create a great picture book. The illustrations seem to offer new details every time we re-read, and they do a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. All in all, we're thrilled we bought this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
This is one of those books that repeats itself on every page. The whole book is about the moose moving the cabbage to the giant cabbage contest. Every page he meets a new animal who joins the group to move the cabbage. The same adjectives of how large it is, is repeated and then everyone's name in a list is read who is moving the cabbage. Only in the back of the book is it explained about the midnight sun and that this book is really based on a Russian folktale.

This is for very young children. I wasn't that excited about the illustrations. ... Read more
