1-0 out of 5 stars It's just a copy of Wikipedia
The books from Alphascript Publishing are described as "by John McBrewster, Frederic P. Miller, and Agnes F. Vandome". They are called editors in the book listings. The only content of most of these books is free, re-packaged Wikipedia articles!

It is a rip-off, folks!

The articles are often poorly printed, characters from foreign languages will go missing, and numerous images of arrows instead of linked text that was present in Wikipedia. Just read and print out the original articles for free at the Wikipedia website than pay this ridiculous amount of money for what has been described as a scam or hoax. Advertising for the books at Amazon and elsewhere does not reveal the freely-licensed source of the content. It is only revealed inside the books, AFTER you've been suckered with making a purchase.

As an example of the level of care given to the books, the book "History of Georgia (country)" is about the European country Georgia but has a cover image of Atlanta in the American state of Georgia.

The publisher is hiding out in Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. What does that tell you? ... Read more

Product Description

M. Edith Durham is best known for her classic travel books about the Balkans. However she was also a passionate, articulate and well-informed commentator on Balkan politics and the machinations of the Great Powers. This book brings together articles and letters written by Durham which have been out of the public domain since their original publication in journals, magazines and newspapers. Written in Edith Durham's inimitable style, the book delves beneath the surface of events and offers a compelling portrait of the continuing struggle for Albanian independence. Although the materials in the book were written over sixty years ago, they presage current events in the Balkans with an uncanny resonance. The book will afford readers a remarkable insight into the historical origins of contemporary events in the Balkans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Liasing with medieval "warriors" in 1940s Albania
David Smiley had two active covert adventures with Albania, one inside and one outside that long-troubled Balkan nation. This book rather thoroughly portrays the first, laying out in detail his adventures as a British Liaison Officer with mountain chieftain Abbas Kupi's royalist cetas (guerrilla forces). The major benefit of Smiley's work is that it tantalizingly bridges the BLO adventures in Albania during WWII to the Cold War's major test of what became known as the "roll back" policy (forcing Soviet influence back within Soviet borders. It gives him a chance for a bit of self-justification, placing the blame for the failure of MI6 ops in Albania at the plate of alleged superspy Harold A.R. 'Kim' Philby. Smiley's work is not as thorough in its treatment of this wartime episode as Julian Amery's 1948 tome, "Sons of the Eagle", but its brevity is also a point for those impatient with esoteric Balkan names and terms. Like some of his World War II cohorts, Smiley became enamored of Albanians and sees them for what they are, charming survivors with a touch of hubris. One can only wish Smiley's autobiography or memoir would trace his colorful life from Sandhurst to his walnut farm near Alicante in Spain. ... Read more

Product Description

On November 8, 1943, U.S. Army nurse Agnes Jensen stepped out of a cold rain in Catania, Sicily, into a C-53 transport plane. But she and twelve other nurses never arrived in Bari, Italy, where they were to transport wounded soldiers to hospitals farther from the front lines. A violent storm and pursuit by German Messerschmitts led to a crash landing in a remote part of Albania, leaving the nurses, their team of medics, and the flight crew stranded in Nazi-occupied territory. What followed was a dangerous nine-week game of hide-and-seek with the enemy, a situation President Roosevelt monitored daily. Albanian partisans aided the stranded Americans in the search for a British Intelligence Mission, and the group began a long and hazardous journey to the Adriatic coast. During the following weeks, they crossed Albania's second highest mountain in a blizzard, were strafed by German planes, managed to flee a town moments before it was bombed, and watched helplessly as an attempt to airlift them out was foiled by Nazi forces. Albanian Escape is the suspense-filled story of the only group of Army flight nurses to have spent any length of time in occupied territory during World War II. The nurses and flight crew endured frigid weather, survived on little food, and literally wore out their shoes trekking across the rugged countryside. Thrust into a perilous situation and determined to survive, these women found courage and strength in each other and in the kindness of Albanians and guerrillas who hid them from the Germans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Albanian Escape:
I have read several books related to WWII nursing history. This was one of the most original stories I have come across. Well Written and very much worth the read. Not one of the Vets that I spoke with from this era had ever heard of this story. It was a great bit of little known history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, truly, amazing!
Mrs. Mangerich, I was moved, ok, maybe I'm a bit partial, but I loved it... Mrs. Mangerich, my grandfather gave me this book, you know your cousin, I thought agh, another war-story.But I got into, drove my friendsnuts talking about it, i loved every aspectof the story. The drama, andthe way the story was written was beautiful.I was impressed, truly, especially considering I'm only a teen and you managed to captivate myimpaitent mind... 5 stars all around, I hope to see you @ the familyreunion!

5-0 out of 5 stars A story of Bravery and Survival good for all ages
Albanian Escape was exciting, quick-paced, and inspiring. After crashing behind enemy lines, this narrative of a group of brave women, written from one surviovor's perspective, was everything an adventure story could be. An unexpected turn of events leads to a challenge, a journey behind enemylines during World War II.Throughout, the physical strength, courage, disciple and patriotism of the servicewomen remain steady.I loved hearingabout the descriptions of covert radio transmissions, the long walks in thedark and the unfamiliar food eaten gratefully by the characters. The storyread like a story, yet one knew IT HAD REALLY HAPPENED, because of thethreat of Hitler's armies and that there was much at stake if these peoplewere captured.Another angle of the narrative which interested me wasthe fact that Albania, recently in the news because of the wars in theBalkans and Kosovo, was the poulation the nurses came in contact with.Ilearneda lot about the way political loyalties were very fragile andunreliable during a war.For example, In the book, there were three maingroups of citizens in Albania: those loyal to the Germans, those who wantedpolitical independence from the dictator of Albania at the time, and thosewho were loyal to the Allies. Therefore, the issue of who wasfriendlywas a complicated one for the Americans. Reading about Ablania, I gainedinsight into current events in my own world. I recommend this bookhighly to readers of all ages, especially those who want to learn aboutwhat it was like during World War II.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important piece of historical work.
This was very important for me as my father, who is now deceased, was one of the medics on board the aircraft.Information on him that was unknownto me was brought to light in the book.It is well written and i amthankful that this piece of history that involved my father was recordedfor the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Story and A Great Read
This book, Albanian Escape, The True Story of U.S. Army Nurses Behind Enemy Lines, by Agnes Jensen Mangerich as told to E.M. Monahan and R.L. Neidel is a great story, well written, and historically relevant today.Itis relevant to today's debate on women in the military and their abilityand stamina to deal with hardship and come out winners. And it certainlyhas relevance to today's problems in the Balkans. While the story is toldfrom the perspective of one of the nurses, it does deal with the other 12nurses involved, the medics and the plane crew; the Albanians willing tohelp them escape German-held Albania and the British SOE and American OSSofficers detailed to help them escape. The authors were able to trace downactual reports from the Bari Air Base, Command Communique concerning theincident and reports from Lt. Duffy, SOE and Capt. Smith, OSS, intertwiningthese very well in the account. One mystery remains in this book--regardingwhy the pilots did not have the password for the day which prevented themfrom getting the information they sought from the Bari Air Field about thetime they were due there and the copilots unwillingness to talk about it toJensen when she mentioned to him that the radio operator had told her thatthe pilots had tried to radio Bari. I also understand that Monahan andNeidel were telling Jensen's story, but it would have been great if some ofthe others in the group could have been contacted to hear their perspectiveof this event.Unfortunately, we hear from the Veterans Admiinstrationthat we are losing 1000 WWII Veterans daily in the U.S. and it is not easyto find such people if they didn't keep in touch. But an awful lot of goodstories are going untold. As a retired Army Nurse, Korea and Vietnam era,I had to smile alot at some of the dialogue, and think how typical it wasof military nurses in every generation when the going got rough.I believethe writers did a great job of telling Agnes Jensen Mangerich's story and Iwould recommend it to all who have an interest in military history andparticularly women in the military and military nurses. We're blest thisyear with both this book and Norman's We Band of Angels--Great Readings.Ira P. Product Description

Kosovo’s declaration of independence in 2008 -- and the overt manipulation of this precedent by Russia in its war with Georgia and South Ossetia shortly afterwards -- has focused the world’s attention once again on the Balkans. But Albania’s role within the region remains little known and less understood. In this revised edition of a major work of contemporary history, two well-known and internationally-respected authorities elucidate Albania's place in the Balkans, from the explosion of violence in the 1990s, which brought the country to the brink of civil war, to the present day.

Since 1997, the Albanian region has been forced simultaneously to come to terms with the realities of a post-Communist world and the threat of Slobodan Milosevic’s ‘Greater Serbia’ project.  Its people, the authors argue, are involved in the process of national self-emancipation: the re-establishment of free markets and ending of Communist border controls have renewed long dormant cultural and economic links between the Albanian people and the wider region.

The future of the Albanians in the Balkans is the most pressing issue in the region today, a fact which the West must pay close heed to if this long neglected nation is to become a European partner. Indeed, the authors argue, in this rapidly evolving political climate, failure to come to terms with the importance of the Albanian question could return the region as a whole to armed conflict.

5-0 out of 5 stars Albania Joinsthe NATO Club
Albania's recent entry into NATO makes the reading of The Albanian Question a necessity if you want to understand Albania, Kosova and the Balkans. From the economic riots that almost destroyed Albania in 1997, through the NATO bombing of Serbia, and up to the Ramboulillet peace talks, James Pettifer and Miranda Vickers sweep the reader along with their deep, uncanny knowledge of Albania and the Balkans, and with their sharp writing skills. I cannot say enough about the importance of this book. It belongs on the desk of any serious student of the Balkans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Destailed explanantion of the aftermath of communism and the role of Kosovo and Albania
For Americans many found just as they did with Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia confusion when it came to sorting out who was who and their role in the breakup and war in Yugoslavia - this book provides an excellent explanation of who the Albanians are in Kosovo and who they are in Albania and the relationships they have.It also provides an excellent understanding of the different political and military groups that have played a significant role in shaping the path of this region. For a country that was very closed to the West this book provides and excellent detailed account of actions leading to a new open Albania and the influence on the current questions of independence for Kosovo. ... Product Description

The Battle of Kosovo of 1389 holds enormous significance in the formation of modern Balkan nation states, especially among South Slav and Serbian nationalist circles. What has given this single battle such resonance, even more than six centuries later, and what does it reveal about the complex tangle of identity in the contemporary Balkans?

Robert Elsie’s beautiful new translation brings a little-known Albanian epic account of the battle between the Ottoman Sultan Murat I and a coalition of Balkan forces brilliantly to life. The fantastic tale of Murat’s campaign in Kosovo and his assassination by the Albanian knight Millosh Kopiliq is more often presented from the Serb perspective, which extols particularly the valour of the Serbian knight Milos Obilic. By proposing an alternative narrative, The Battle of Kosovo offers a more nuanced understanding of this powerful myth of nationalism and belonging. Anna Di Lellio’s sensitive commentary explores the significance of this epic poem and of the battle more generally in post-war Kosovo in reinforcing a collective identity that emphasises resistance against foreign oppression and identifies strongly with a European, predominantly Christian culture. The Battle of Kosovo is an important addition to our understanding of the past, present and future of this complex Balkan nation as well as the broader issues of national memory and identity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fiction, but not SF - Its called propaganda or order a book
At the time of Kosovo battle,
it was a field of battle and not that much settled territory,
where the Serbian Church was founded.

Milos is not Albanian (aka Kosovar) name
Obilic is Serbian sername.

Battle was fought between Serbian and Bosnian knights and the Ottoman Empire.

At the best, Albanians could be infantry on one or both sides.

Its Turkish victory, but both Turks and Serbs suffered great losses, included
the leaders and so Turks reatreated to decide who is the next Sultan.

Serbs have builded the EPIC of this battle,
but now I see Albanians do the same mistake.

But they even change the history.

Just like I have heard that Serbian monatasteries are Dardanian-Byzanth style
on the web site of the Ministry of culture of Kosovo.

Lies do not help, they just make this author look stupid,
as well as very well known publisher.

Shame on you both!

And before you buy it, at least check historical accounts.
(...)

Also, I believe Serbian diaspora will
stop buying the books of both author and publisher
and keep them blamed for such an ignorant book.

there is a way to change history, but this is just
like DERETIC JOVAN in Serbian.

Someones high ego and stupidness.

For that, she shall be punished by the law,
and morally sanctioned. Shame on her!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read!
A truly enjoyable read. This book's contribution is two-fold; apart from documenting a little-know Albanian version of the myth of the
Battle of Kosovo, the songs and the essay open up the space for debate
about competing narratives in a region that has never argued
peacefully about its past. The book confirms that nothing is set in
stone and by doing so it advises the new generations in the Balkans to
strive for plurality of voices and opinions as their truth is often
not the only one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable book
This book is indispensable for anyone (scholars and amateurs alike)trying to understand the complex relationships of history, myth, identity and nationalism in the Balkans. By providing the little known Albanian mythical perspective on the real event of the Kosovo battle of 1389 it informs the modern debate on Kosovo and Albanian-Serb relations in a way that few books do.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most accurate book, please must read it
This is the most accurate historical book ever written about the Balkans and medieval Kosovo in particular. Anna di Lellio does not attempt to take sides but rather gives detailed historical evidence, leaving up to the reader to decide which side of the story is more complete.
Indeed, as a reader I find the Albanian side of story as more complete. While the traditional Albanian folk songs and the Albanian people have been remembering this soldier as their national hero for centuries, the Serbian side is merely relied on political edited work written mainly in the 20th century, more precisely in the 80s during the Milosevic era.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Battle for Kosovo 2009; fighting against Albanian Myths
This work of science fiction best describes the parallel world that Balkan tribes live in.
In absence of any historical facts that Albanians lived in Kosovo and Metohija before the Ottoman occupation in the 14th century; it's a travesty to copycat the Serbian history and cultural heritage as your own.

3-0 out of 5 stars A View of Albania from Tito's Yugoslavia
For many years, we in the West received practically no information about Albania, which, though in Europe, was more remote than Borneo or Tibet. Thus, any book which brought that small country to our attention, thatcould shed any light whatsoever on the Land of the Mountain Eagle, wasworth reading. At the beginning of the 21st century, however, things havechanged.Albania is open to the world, journalists and tourists can gothere freely, aid workers come and go, and many books have been writtenalready.Hence, books such as ALBANIA AND THE ALBANIANS are out of date. The author, a well-educated, Albanian man from Kosovo and a partyofficial in foreign affairs in former Yugoslavia, wrote this volume aboutAlbania in the early 1970s.He wrote it in Serbo-Croatian---an indicationof how things have changed since then.Even though Yugoslavia and Albaniawere hardly on good terms, it seems that Yugoslav officials such asMarmullaku could not go too far in criticizing the brutalities and outrightparanoia that permeated the Communist attempt to revolutionize Albaniansociety and bring it into the modern world. One infers that that wouldhave been understood as implicit criticism of the Yugoslav regime as well. Marmullaku provides information about Albanian history, the nationalindependence movement, and a very interesting chapter entitled "The familyand tribal tradition" in which he admits that although Albania claimed tohave wiped out blood feuds, they still existed and, indeed, were increasingin Kosovo.Of course we now know that the feuds in Albania were onlysuppressed by force, but once that force was removed, they returned. Mostof the book deals with post-revolutionary Albania and is less thanforthright on actual conditions, using statistics issued by the Hoxharegime. The last chapter is on Kosovo---the author's view of the Albanianposition there, as citizens of Yugoslavia, sounding sadly naive ordeliberately false in the year 2000.In general, this is a book that hasnot borne up well under the attacks of time.It can be read as an exampleof what kind of information on Albania was available for much of the 20thcentury. ... Product Description
This lavishly illustrated book details one of the most turbulent periods of Mediterranean history (AD 400-1200) in the light of the latest archaeological results from the Epirote city of Butrint. The flourishing Christian city, with its churches and elaborate mosaic pavements, was gradually replaced first by a succession of homesteads before the re-making of Butrint as a town around AD 1000. However, Byzantine authority was eventually extinguished in the face of the Venetians and their Frankish allies. This book presents a vivid new understanding of the remaking and social organisation of towns in the middle Byzantine period - a period that endured the end of the Roman world and the creation of a medieval Europe. ... Product Description
In some senses, Albania is a living museum of the past. Originally a small herding community in the most inaccessible reaches of the Balkans, the presence of Albanians in southeastern Europe has been documented for over a thousand years.

Albanian traditional folk culture, which evolved over centuries of relative isolation, is surprisingly rich. Yet despite recent events this culture remains little known to the Western world. Due to the lasting effects of a half century of Stalinist dictatorship, very few individuals even in Albania know much about their own popular traditions.

The Dictionary of Albanian Religion, Mythology, and Folk Culture makes available for the first time a wealth of knowledge about Albanian popular belief and folk customs. Alphabetical entries shed light on blood feuding, figures of Albanian mythology, religious beliefs, communities, and sects, calendar feasts and rituals, and popular superstitions, as well as birth, marriage, and funeral customs, and sexual mores. This unique volume will stand as the standard reference work on the subject for years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A drink of water in a parched landscape
This is a phenomenal resource. It is the first attempt, that I know of at least, to try and catalogue the mythology of a culture that at worst was a contemporary of the ancient Greeks.I'll be honest and say that I'm biased in regards to anything Albanian (I'm from Kosova) but I got a huge kick out of this.I flipped through with my mother and was able to find entries for monsters and tales she had told me while I was growing up codified by genuine certified academic types!

Much if not most Albanian folklore is handed down via an oral tradition that extends back to before Christ. It is a beautiful thing but being oral it dies if no one remembers it, that is exactly what I am afraid is going to happen. As someone who has been to the region many, many times I think it imperative that the knowledge of the oldest generations be recorded before they pass on.If not then all you'll be left with is people like myself, who have but a pale echo of that tradition of myth and legend.

The only downside to this fantastic book is that it is so very limited. It is obvious that material exists for a much more in depth examination of this amazing trove. Some doctoral candidates out there have enough raw materials for 100 theses. Get hopping! ... Read more
