The first election after World War I marked the commencement of Alberta's political revolution, a protest against Canada's old-line parties – Liberal and Conservative – that ignored the unique needs of Westerners. From 1921-1971, Alberta’s political giants, along with the people of Alberta, shaped Alberta as we know it. Highlighting the lives and political contributions of four of Alberta's revolutionary leaders – Henry Wise Wood, J.E. Brownlee, William Aberhart, and Ernest C. Manning – Alberta's Revolutionary Leaders traces Alberta's political, social, and economic evolution during this important period in its history. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the unique "biography" of Alberta political figure John Lee Laurie; one of Alberta's key proponents for the Aboriginal franchise through the 1940s and 50s. Author Ruth Gorman worked closely with Laurie during these years and was a key figure in mobilising and influencing public opinion in the province - this despite the social convention that women of this era remain in the shadows, dutifully taking the position of "the woman behind the man". Prior to 1961, the Aboriginal people of Canada could only vote in federal elections if they agreed to become "Canadian", a requirement that stipulated they move away from their reserves, give up their treaty rights, and essentially leave behind their homes, farms and families. John Laurie was instrumental in securing amendments to the 1961 Indian Act, removing once-and-for-all any archaic impediments to enfranchisement, allowing finally the Aboriginals an unfettered vote."Behind the Man" introduces Ruth Gorman as one of Alberta's most interesting female historical figures, a heroine struggling to balance home life and work obligations, overcoming frustrations at the inequitable gender and power structures of her era, and reminding us that there is always more than one point of view when it comes to recording history. ... Product Description

The UFA/UFWA launched the most successful agrarian revolt in North American history. "The Rise of Agrarian Democracy" is a lucid and persuasive work detailing one of the greatest mass democratic movements in Canada. The book makes new and significant contributions towards our scholarly understanding of the evolution and politicization of the Alberta farmers' movement over several decades.

The result is an important investigation in western and agrarian history and economics. A path is laid from the farmers' inherited ideas and common experience, gender assumptions, class opposition, agrarian ideals and a collective sense of responsibility, co-operation and confidence. We follow the development of a grassroots movement whose astonishing political success culminated in the election of the United Farmers of Alberta in 1921 which governed the province for over a decade.

There is much more on offer than a purely institutional study. Rennie examines this elemental period in Canadian democracy within the cultural, social and community context at the core of the movement's inception. The author provides a solid and balanced focus on organization, the role of gender, the relationships between farmers and other classes and the role of education in the movement.

The result of meticulous research, this work is of unique interest to the study of co-operative movements worldwide and delivers with impressive clarity and accuracy valuable insight to the academic body of reform movements and gender history in this country. ... Read more

Product Description
The history of indigenous political action in Canada is long, hard-fought, and under-told. By the mid-1900s, Native peoples across western Canada were actively involved in their own political unions in a drive to be heard outside their own, often isolated, reserve communities.

In Alberta, the Indian Association of Alberta (IAA) represented the interests of Alberta's reserve communities. Perhaps best known for its role in spearheading the protest against the 1969 White Paper produced by the Department of Indian Affairs, the IAA, founded in 1939, allowed Native peoples access to politics at the provincial level. Its rich history reveals much about First Nations' perspectives on the place of Indian peoples in Canada before the emergence of civil rights movements and large-scale federal funding of Native organizations.

This book, which outlines the significance of treaty rights discussions before their constitutional entrenchment and documents the political philosophies of First Nations leaders in the prairie provinces, will be welcomed by those with an interest in Native studies, political science, and Canadian history. ... Product Description
One Canada is a vision of creating a strong and united Canada, out of the dysfunctional federation of ten provinces and three territories, leading to the Greatest Country on Earth. Canada was created to be a strong country, nurturing the regions, eventually becoming greater than its parts. As Canada grew from infancy, the provinces, the Aunts and Uncles of Confederation, also grew and aspired to become independent countries on their own. Since the Centennial in 1967, the young Canada grew, exerting the rights given to it by the Constitution. The Aunts and Uncles, having designs of nationhood, began resenting the young adult, forcing it to gradually ceding its control and now is a nearly impotent custodian of Canadian citizenship, and almost equal to the Aunts and Uncles in stature.

The Canadian Federation has devolved into a State of Feudalism, where "passing the buck" is the common denominator between the federal and provincial governments.Municipal governments blame the provincial for their ills; the provinces then blame the federal government with the buck passing in a vicious circle. Inside the vicious circle are the people of Canada bound in red tape while being taxed to death to pay for the ineffectiveness of governments. With each provincial government determined to create its own kingdom within Canada, One Canada will never be a reality; unless a new paradigm of governance is developed for all of Canada.

The new paradigm is governance at the local municipal level, supervised by the National government. The Fathers' of Confederation clearly defined the powers and responsibilities of the federal Parliament and the provincial legislatures. Had the clear division of powers been followed, Canada would, today, be greater than the sum of its regions. For the first 100 years of Confederation, the provincial governments, like aunts and uncles, helped nurture Canada through the adolescent years and into nationhood. Like the Jamaican Proverb, "Two bull caan reign in a the same pen"*, the ten provincial and one federal government have been locking horns together. Now the time has come for the provinces to remove their blinders, let Canada grow into maturity, bringing greater prosperity to its people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Words
Lois Hole's vision on the importance of education and reading comes through so clearly in this book. Her warm words resonate and her inclusion of "all" makes this a most inspiring book. This book has given us a gift by publishing her speeches, so her spirit remains with us. I particularly like the speech that brings the wonderful story of Mrs. Durocher, just beautiful. Lois was ahead of her time too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and moving
Caring is something the world needs more of. "Lois Hole Speaks: Words That Matter" is a collection of speeches about a woman who does care - about life, education, and her country. A university chancellor, gardener, and lieutenant governor, she made a career out of caring, and despite passing away in 2005, her speeches and writings have been collected. Inspiring and moving, "Lois Hole Speaks" is a must for those who want to bring caring into their government.

Product Description
The environmental objectives set out in Canada's Green Plan call for a 50 percent reduction of waste in Canada's national parks. This in-depth study of the waste issues in Jasper National Park looks at recent management practices, analyses park waste streams, and offers management options for the future. An attempt has been made to determine how much waste is generated in the park, who creates it, and what it consists of. The findings presented here have enabled the park to act decisively in establishing waste minimisation programs. While waste management in Jasper National Park presents some unique challenges, many of the practices discussed in this book will find broader application in other small communities across Canada. The book reaffirms the need for each community to define its own waste composition and to review the effectiveness of its current waste management practices. ... Read more

Product Description
A groundbreaking study of urban sprawl in Calgary after the SecondWorld War. The interactions of land developers and the local governmentinfluenced how the pattern grew: developers met market demands andoptimized profits by building houses as efficiently as possible, whilethe City had to consider wider planning constraints and infrastructurecosts. Foran examines the complexity of their interactions from ahistorical perspective, why each party acted as it did, and where eachcan be criticized. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars gets the basics right, doesn't always focus on most important details
This book explains how sprawl happened in a mid-size Canadian city: in essence, a combination of municipal restrictiveness and municipal permissiveness.

Calgary was restrictive in telling developers how to build (especially in already-developed areas).Paralyzed by fear of traffic and of NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) resistance to infill, the city's zoning and planning officials limited density, favored cul-de-sacs over grids, and designed commercial streets for high-speed traffic instead of pedestrians and commerce - all policies that made development oriented towards cars rather than people. To give a couple of examples: single family subdivisions were designed to have 22 people per acre, or about 5-6 units- too few to make quality bus service economical. And in the 1960s, the city's comprehensive plan stated that streets were for moving traffic, and "emphatically not to accommodate business."

On the other hand, the city was quite happy to annex suburban land and let developers build on such land.Where there was no NIMBY threat to worry about, giving in to developers was the course of least resistance.

Foran addresses these basic issues adequately.I do wish, however, that he had focused more on design issues (e.g. why wasn't development more pedestrian-friendly in new areas without NIMBYs) and less on issues only tangentially related to sprawl such as the details of utility pricing. ... Excerpt: Kenneth "Ken" Reginald Kowalski, MLA (September 27, 1945 - ) is a provincial level politician and former teacher from Alberta, Canada. He is a current member and also dean of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and has served continuously since November 1979 sitting with the governing Progressive Conservative caucus under four different Premiers. Kowalski is the current Speaker of the Assembly, and was first appointed to the Executive Council of Alberta by Premier Don Getty in 1986. Since his appointment he has held five different cabinet portfolios including that of Deputy Minister from 1992 to 1994. Kenneth Reginald Kowalski was born in Bonnyville, Alberta on September 27, 1945. He worked as a teacher at Barrhead Composite High School, and was a civil servant working for the Alberta government in the 1970s. Kowalski ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature for the first time a by-election held in November of 1979 in the electoral district of Barrhead to replace Hugh Horner. He ran against three other candidates including Alberta Liberal leader Nicholas Taylor. Kowalski just barely won the election with Taylor finishing a strong second. He took 38% of the popular vote in the hotly contested race to hold the seat for the Progressive Conservatives. The other two candidates from Social Credit and the NDP also had respectable showings. Kowalski would face off against Taylor in the 1982 Alberta general election. The field in the race was crowded with a total of six different candidates contesting the race. Both Kowalski and Taylor would make gains while the other four opposition candidates didn't have much of an impact in the race. Kowalski held his seat by doubling his popular vote, while Taylor only saw a marginal increase. The 1986 general e... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4098131 ... Read more

Product Description

For years scholars have maintained that Social Credit was a protest on the part of small-scale farmers, who fought against their disadvantaged position in advanced capitalism by rejecting central Canada's control of the prairie region. The protest is usually described as conservative and its supporters portrayed as small agrarian capitalists who combined their opposition to regional exploitation with a firm commitment to capitalism. Based on a review of census materials on occupations, election results, and the party's statements and appeals, Bell reveals that this traditional interpretation is misguided on several counts. He provides a greatly revised picture of the movement's popular class base and its goals and motives, and shows that it was far more radical than commonly believed. The theory of social movements Bell draws from this analysis is applicable not only to Social Credit but to social movements in general.Social Classes and Social Credit in Alberta will be of particular interest to sociologists, political scientists, and historians concerned with Canadian social movements and elections and the political history of the Great Depression.

Excerpt: Nicole Evangeline Lilly (born August 3, 1979) is a Golden Globe-nominated Canadian actress, best known for her role as Kate Austen in the ABC drama, Lost. Evangeline Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, to a devoutly Protestant family. Her father is an economics teacher, and her mother is a beauty consultant. Lilly also has two sisters. Her youngest sister, Andrea, has been described by Evangeline as "the actor in the family." Before leaving the town of Fort Saskatchewan for Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, Evangeline briefly attended three elementary schools, Fort Elementary, Rudolph Hennig and James Mowat Elementary. Lilly recalled, "When I was a kid, the Fort was tiny. I could ride my bike at five years old from one end of town to the other.... To me Fort Saskatchewan holds a lot of really great memories. I just consider it a little happy hideaway." In Abbotsford, Lilly completed her high school years at W. J. Mouat Secondary School, and went on to study international relations at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Lilly also served briefly as a foreign missionary and lived in a grass hut in the Philippines. She was offered permanent missionary work there for two years, an offer she nearly accepted but eventually declined because of her parents' wishes. Lilly was a flight attendant with Royal Airlines. She speaks French fairly well. She also worked at Green Bay Bible Camp near Kelowna and at the Earls Restaurant in Abbotsford. Before starring on Lost (2004), Lilly worked a variety of other jobs. She apparently worked as a flight attendant, waitress, and completed oil changes on big rigs. To fund her university education, she also did TV commercials (i.e. "LiveLinks Chatline") and modeling although she n... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1031258 ... Read more
