Solid Text
This is clearly one of Prentice Hall's better efforts. The material in this book is so well developed that it can be used as an additional reference during a precalc course for the algebra element.

Examples are color-coded to show steps. There are lots of sample problems included. The only drawback to this book is the large amounts of photos and drawings that aren't necessary--but these are present in this entire series of math books.

The glossary is a big bonus. Not all math texts have a glossary as nice as this one. ... Read more

Not at College Algebra level
This is a good book for algebra and does an excellent job of explaining the concepts and formulas.It is great if you are a beginner and want to understand algebra on a common language level and move forward from there.

But, there is a lot left out if you're planning to test out for college credit.For example:absolute value, infinities, logarithms, "f" domain of function, graphing cones, arithmetic sequence, etc. are not included.

I'm glad I was able to get it from my library and didn't have to buy it!

3rd Edition still lots of errors
It's a good thing I have a program called the Algebrator on my computer because this book has a lot of errors. If I work out a problem and get it wrong according to this book, I put the problem through Algebrator and find out that most of the time I did it correctly. I do no recommend this book because of the errors. Very frustrating. They should not be selling this book. I wish I had kept track of how many, but there are at least 30 errors so far, and I am on chapter 14.

A lot of errors
There are a lot of errors in the answer key (I have the 2nd edition); since this is a self-study book, the errors can be quite frustrating.The book is also a little bit watered-down, and doesn't cover some topics standard in most algebra texts.For example, factoring cubes is completely uncovered, and the section on graphing is very limited.It's excellent at teaching the basics and building confidence, but the errors are annoying, and if you are planning on going on to pre-calculus with only this book as preparation , you will probably find yourself a little behind most of the other students.

This book is by far the best math teaching book I have ever seen. Its up there with The complete idiots guide to calculus.

It was almost time for my Algebra finals and I was nervous. I got an 80 on the mid-term, so I needed to get an A on the final. So I grabbed this book and it really helped me. excellent work in need of a layman's touch
This is allegedly written for the educated layman but I know few who could grasp (or care about) field vs group theory, rings, tensors or manifolds much less "movements" like "Intuitionism" and "Constructivism". The author thankfully does not attempt a deep inquiry into every crevice of modern math but instead presents a breezy if sometimes obtuse overview.

Even mathematicians can be informed here, particularly on the personalities.The author attempts to stay within the bounds of algebra while explaining that various disciplines necessarily cross lines with geometry, topology other algebras.The author thankfully includes illustrations although many more are required.Many times, it was next to impossible trying to picture the prose.Then again, much of the latter part of the book is conceptual without basis in reality - parallel lines that meet, many dimensions (presented in three, of course), complex numbers, vectors, etc. Many times, the creation of the mathematical concept (matrix, field permutation, etc) is as astounding as the principles by which they are solved. My Grade - B+

A nice book on the history of algebra
This book is a relatively easy to read history of algebra, togehter with short introductions to some topics in algebra that a layman might never have encountered (or needs to review).

The author gives good concrete examples of concepts such as groups, rings and fields, so that one can get an idea of what these ideas mean and why they are important.So I think it's a good introduction to some of abstract algebra; however, to understand that subject well would require more in-depth study than one could get from this book.

The narratives about prominent mathematicians are interesting and well-written too. (They also provide a sometimes-needed break from reading the more technical material.) The author also does a good job of showing the historical context for the development of certain ideas in mathematics.

Toward the end of the book, I found myself sometimes losing track of what was going on - the concepts get more and more abstract, and the explanations seem to get shorter.

In summary: this book has enough technical material so that one not familiar with the subject can learn something.I think much of it would be understandable to a motivated reader who didn't have any math background beyond what is taught in high-school algebra.

Abstraction not quite brought down to earth
Don't get me wrong, Derbyshire makes a lot of VERY abstract ideas a lot more accessible to the non-specialist reader than he/she should reasonably expect.Even so, he takes a lot more for granted this time round than he did in his last book (on prime numbers and the Riemann Hypothesis).By the end of that book, I felt that I really understood (albeit in a not especially technical way) a very difficult area of mathematical thought.Granted, UQ has as it's focus the entire mathematical branch of algebra over its 3,000 year history.I should not have expected a thorough explication of mathematical details along the way.As a survey, UQ certainly whetted my appetite to further read and explore in the field of algebra.And it was packed with fascinating information.Less one star only because JD had set such a high bar with his last book.This one doesn't quite reach it.

Group theory for beginners
This is simply brilliant.However, it is also different from John Derbyshire's other book "Prime Obsession".It is more abstract and I myself had to read in a second time to understand the concepts fully.But what a reward!Once the reader comprehends his deliberation on groups and invariance, he or she can enbark on other journeys in understanding the nature of physics (and by corollary the universe itself).So in summary, it is as clear as it can be, and as engaging as Derbyshire has been.

Excellent Course or Reference Book!
I bought this book for my 13yr old son who is taking his first course in Algebra this 09-10 school yr. This book is excellent for shy students who do not want to call a lot of attention to themselves in class.No matter what the teacher is teaching about Algebra, there is usually a better explanation in Stan's book.

I have been buying Stan's books for over 15 years, on many different technical subjects.I have never been disappointed! His books are always a great buy for the present and future reference!

Good basic algebra review
I bought this book for a middle school child (8th grade) and decided to do some reviewing as well. I found Algebra Know-It-All to be straight forward and simple to understand. I liked the fact that concepts were introduced, built upon, and then added into the overall material. I was also glad to see that the text was conversational and began simply without giving the feeling that the student was being dropped into the deep end of the pool from the start. I especially like the author's encouraging words to the student throughout the book. Definitely worth the money.

Huge Foundation Miscue
I'm a high school math teacher of over 30 years who is always on the look out for a solid supplemental book for our library and math department resources. When I read the Amazon writeup, I felt it would be worth a look-see.

Interestingly when I received the book, it fell open to pages 72-73. I couldn't believe what I found in print regarding the order of operations under an "Are You Confused?" subheading. Yes, I became very confused (and distraught) by the instructions to "group..." and then "do all the multiplications from left to right" followed by "group..." and then "do all the divisions from left to right." And the example in Table 5-1 followed this sequence (resulting in a wrong answer of -8 - a basic scientific calculator check gives the correct answer of 71).

[FYI, The agreed on order of operations states that multiplication and division are performed together from left to right in the same step.]

This HUGE fundamental error is certain to trip up or confuse anyone who is using this book as a self-study or supplemental learning guide. (And it's restated again on page 154, so it's not just a misprint.) As a result, before the author gets into discussing Algebra with his readers, he's got them doing basic Pre-Algebra work incorrectly. A formula for disaster.

So there is no way that I can begin to recommend this book until the publisher (McGraw-Hill) pulls it back for a full edit to make sure that there are not other significant errors.

Until then, I wouldn't trust the suggestion on the back cover to learn more by going to the MATHPROFESSIONAL.COM website. Sorry.

Geoff Smith's Introductory Mathematics: Algebra and Analysis provides a splendid introduction to the concepts of higher mathematics that students of pure mathematics need to know in upper division mathematics courses.Smith's explanations are clear and laced with humor.He gives the reader a sense of how mathematicians think about the subject, while making the reader aware of pitfalls such as notation that varies from book to book or country to country and subtleties that are hidden within the wording of definitions and theorems.Since the book is written for first-year British university students who are reading pure mathematics, Smith's approach is informal.He focuses on conveying the key concepts, while gradually building greater rigor into the exposition.The exercises range from straightforward to decidedly non-routine problems.Answers to all questions are provided in an appendix or on a website devoted to the book whose address is listed in the book's preface.That website also contains a list of known errata, extra, generally more difficult, exercises on the material in the book, and discussions of topics related to those in the book.The book is suitable for self-study.Students preparing to take or review advanced mathematics courses will be well-served by working through the text.

There is a book by Ian Stewart and David Tall, The Foundations of Mathematics, that covers similar ground.It is devoted to building up the properties of number systems, which is a useful foundation for courses in analysis.However, it will not prepare you as well for courses in algebra as Smith's text, which I recommend enthusiastically.

An excellent introduction to analysis and algebra
If you want to understand mathematics after high school you must read this book first before plunging into university level mathematics. It will make your journey in mathematics much easier.

A lucid, laugh-a-minute delight
Here is an author who brings a fresh vitality to basic undergraduate mathematics with his witty, discursive treatment of topics ranging from the nature of a proof to a kit for the construction of the real numbers.

Smith adopts a tone of camaraderie which lures the reader along a trailof mathematical discovery, all the while remaining true to the standards ofexactitude which must characterise mathematics at this level. Nevercondescending, he blithely raises issues which other authors would sweepunder the carpet in a beginners' textbook, treating them with hisinimitable forthright professionalism.The author's exuberant interest andkeen mind pervade the book, making it a perfect delight to read.

Iwould recommend that all young undergraduates/school-leavers are given thisbook before more traditional dusty texts blind them to the sheer pleasureof mathematics.

A first-rate and funny introduction to algebra and analysis
As a returning novice to university mathematics, (it is some15 years since the last time I last took an introductory maths course) I found this book to be both refreshing and highly original.The material and layout isdifferent to most textbooks.It is probably a book for people who want tograsp the idea of mathematics rather than just pass an exam. However, asthe author notes in the preface, it is (other things being equal) both a'gentle and relaxed introduction'.The mathematics is pure and theemphasis is on the idea rather than on how to solve particular problems inthe life sciences or engineering.Topics covered include; Sets, functionsand relations; Proofs; Complex numbers; Vectors and matrices; Group theory;Sequences and series; Real numbers; and Mathematical analysis.It is anexcellent book for those interested in learning and understandingmathematics.The colloquial tone helps alot and it is a style thatdeserves to become more common in the future.The book also offers aninteresting glimpse of the mathematical mind.The author has a remarkablesense of humour and the book is hilarious at times. ... nothing abstract in this one
this book is the reason i changed my major from pure to applied mathematics. if you paid attention in your second grade arithmetic class, you won't learn anything new from this book. we used this in my so called "abstract algebra" course, but the author is too narrow minded to think of any algebra outside of arithmetic. i had perfect grades in the class, but i dropped it before the final because i was too disgusted with the presentation. you're better off going with a text on formal language theory like aho and ullman, or maybe algebra by birkhoff and mac lane. you could even write yourself something more informative on a 3 by 5 card.

Not a lot of details in this book.Mostly just theorems and their proofs.

Ugh
This textbook is the first math book I've had that doesn't have any homework answers in the back of the book. Instead, there are "helpful" hints for selected problems that aren't any help at all. This is very frustrating because I never know if I'm getting the right answer or not.

Excellent Introduction To Algebra
Rotman's book is a standard for first courses in Abstract Algebra.The book is easy to read and includes plenty of problems to work on.He even includes several standard syllabi in the preface, depending on the type of course that may be taught with it.It begins with some number theory, then goes into the traditional group and ring concepts.The only reason I would say to not buy this book is if you really don't like the theorem-proof, theorem-proof kind of writing, but if you don't, you're likely not interested in Abstract Algebra anyway.An excellent book for learning as well as reference.

no better than the first edition
It is always easy to add something to than to get rid of something from the book. I guess this is the case of the author when he prepares the second edition. However, I prefer the first edition because it is more readable, enjoyable, and most importantly, contains just enough information for the introduction to abstract algebra. There are huge number of textbooks on abstract algbra, and making another would not be the author's purpose of the revision, I hope, but it looks it is.
By adding more subjects in detail to the second edition, now it looks the same as any other, only to loose its expository and conversational style of writings, and became a reference-style textbook. ... Read more

My son will be starting high school and algebra this fall, but was left ill-prepared by the pre-algebra course he had in the 8th grade.Hopefully this book and it's accompanying workbook will get him up to speed by next month.

Works for us!
So far, I like this workbook and the guidebook together.We bought the Survival Guide Handbook and the Workbook after my 7th grader got a C on his report card.We thought he could use the review and extra practice over the summer.As the adult step parent tutor, I was worried I forgot all my algebra but the Guide Handbook helped refresh my memory.I like that it's a different format from a textbook.Textbooks (from what I remember) tell you and explains.The Guidebook offers the information and lessons in a question and then answering format.The guidebook also shows possible misinterpretations such as, "Is -2^2 the same as -(2^2)?"
So far, we are on page 18, and I haven't found that many mistakes in the answer key like a previous reviewer suggested.Just one. (Page 14, #20).I got 10.5 but the answer key shows the answer is 15.Did I make a mistake?

For us, this book suits our purpose well.It is simple, to the point, addresses possible misinterpretations, and has a predictable question and answer format.A more advanced student may need further explanation, more word problem connections.The world problems are all in the back on the last 4 pages.

Works well
I used this to refresh for an college algebra course. I like that it reads like you have no clue and it's helping you learn from the bottom up. I got an A in the class so that speaks for itself.

Best algebra guide on the market
Trust me when I say this the best Alegbra guide on the market.I know because I tried them all(no joke.)As an adult, who never had Algebra in high school, I was not prepared for it in college.And there are few college courses that go all the way back to the beginning, mine expected that you already had basic algebra fundamentals.The guide along with the workbook, actually replaced my textbook.The textbook was simply put, confusing, and unrelatable.The guide, and workbook were lifesavers for me.The clear, precise and easy to understand examples clarified much of what confused me.And associating all of the properties and laws to analogies worked liked a charm.In fact, I soon learned I knew th properties and laws better than my classmates and began using the analogies to explain them so they to could remember all the little tricks this guide taught me.My teenage son, who has struggled with Algebra, now has his own copies and wonders why his teachers have never thought to make it so easy to learn.

The Best Ever

I'm a homeschooler with one boy in college and another in public high school. I'm also math challenged so teaching algebra was a nightmare and I felt that my very bright older boys suffered because of it (though they are now both near the top of their classes). I was fine with teaching basic math skills as I know exactly where math falls apart for most kids who learn to hate it. Algebra was an entirely different story. I simply didn't get it, and consequently, neither did my boys. What they did get was that algebra was a horrible subject that should be hated. This feeling was not on the list of things I wanted my sons to inherit from me.

I was determined that it would be better for my younger two and I went in search of a user friendly book that would break it down to manageable steps so that I could teach it effectively and they could master it comfortably.

Enter Algebra Survival Handbook and Workbook. Combined, these two are an unbeatable teaching tool. My third born (who dislikes math intensely) has grown confident enough to teach himself with only occasional help from me. When I do have to step in, I'm able to quickly scan the previous pages and explain what he's missing without feeling like I'm all thumbs. I am learning as much as he is.

Each lesson carefully builds on the concepts you learned previously, just a few problems at a time, with only one or two steps added. His "ohh this is so easy--watch this--" approach builds concepts in the student. He also admits when something is confusing and then goes on to make sure that the student doesn't stay that way.

If you are a homeschooler, you should add this tool to your arsenal.

Examples and problems constructed by inexperienced students
I have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering.I tutor students who are using this book in a community college course.In layout and in format, the book is very good.The concepts are presented in logical order, and the principles are usually explained well.
My problem is that the examples and the end-of-chapter problems are full of errors.Example: Section P.6, "Rational Expressions" presents several examples to define the domain of an expression.Most of these conclude with the incorrect domain.This kind of sloppy editing can leave the student totally confused about a concept that is all-important to understand later concepts, such as systems of equations and series summations.
I fully believe that the author left the basic book construction in the hands of inexperienced students.Its too bad that he did not bother with some double-checking of the work.

Great, but Packaging needs improvement!
I am very pleased with the process.The book that I ordered was correct and sent promptly.The only problem I had was with the packaging.It came wrapped in plastic ONLY!That caused the book to get damaged corners and dents.

An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers

beginning & intermediate algebra
the book was in the condition that was stated in the ad & I was pleased with that...but it came very late...it came much later than was stated at the original shipping estimate that was suggested.I didn't pay for express shipping because of that. When it didn't come as was suggested, then of course, when you inquire about it...then they tell you that it is still within this time-frame that they now tell you is longer. I would highly suggest paying for the quicker shipping if you need the book in two weeks or less. They will tell you 7 to 10 days for normal shipping...but I would not trust this.

Great Book for NON-Algebra folks
Perfect book for what it was designed to do - get you though Algebra. Not a lover of Algebra, I found this book to be helpful with a lot of additional information to make understanding of the concepts less painful! I keep it around as a reference book now for those times that you actually do need Algebra in the real world!

Terrible...of course it is required
I have a degree in Computer Info Systems and I wanted to go back and get my Masters in Comp Sci...sooooo... here I am.
Is it the teacher, or the book, or both?The teacher has assigned problems from the book in advance.You go home and you have the problem, and the answers for the odd numbers in the back, and no idea how to do 85% of the assigned problems because there is no example anywhere to be found.I'm not sure how learning is supposed to occur during this process?
The sections in this book before the problems do a few basic examples, then they have dozens of problems far FAR more advance and cryptic.Which leave the student baffled as to how they got the answer.No learning.I've had college algebra before, but this is by far the most difficult book I've ever seen on the subject.It would take me about a month working every night to cover 1 chapter, and we cover 1 chapter a week in the class.
I am reading a Calculus book that is far easier to understand than this.
This book should be renamed to:Algebra for the expert mathematician professional.

The pages rip very easily also.

I was extremly pleased, with my purchase. The book was in great condition and arrived quickly.

This book is why people hate math.
If you're hoping to do well in your mathematics course or just learn math on your own time, you've chosen the wrong book.

The sections provide very little lead-in, and are filled with a few examples, which may or may not help you do the homework problems at the end of the section. Many times you will find formula notation different from the standard that all other textbooks use, so if you move onto the next level of math, you will see entirely new (Easier) ways of learning the material.

This book only works sufficiently if you've been through precalculus/calculus sequence already and are looking for just a quick cheap refresher on some algebra, which is probably why it is appealing to college professors. If purchasing a different book is an option for you, go for Blitzer or Larson's Precalculus text.

Very Thorough Book
I am teaching from this book this summer, and I have not had the problems that other reviewers have described.This book is written for people with a pretty good understanding of high school algebra - after all, it is a college algebra book.It is not watered down at all, and the material is presented in some depth.However, I have found that this book does a really good job of warning students about common mistakes.I have found it clear (I can't say that for every algebra book I've used.) and my students have not complained, either.I would use this book again. ... Worst math book you'll ever see
A very common agreement in my math class between students is how awful this book is. The book chooses to lead every section by 5-10 examples with a few sentences explaining what is going on. What the book fails to do for any topic is go into detail the logic and reasoning behind what we're doing. The book uses the idea that all we need to do is see HOW something is done to learn how it'll be done in a way the book doesn't show us. There are a ton of questions for the reviews and tests that were not even close to any of the examples in the books but yet we are supposed to know how to do things in a different way without ever being explained WHY things are how they are.

There are videos that come with the book but don't bother putting them on your computer. It's NOT video, it's one frame every 5-8 seconds while the audio streams so you INSTANTLY become confused when he's writing something on the board and it freezes.. but yet you hear him explaining further steps without ever seeing it on screen. It's not my computer, it's how they set up the cd.

No one in my class likes this book, I've done all my learning from web sites since chapter 2 because the book is absolutely not written by a math instructor.
