Editorial Review Product Description Linear algebra is a living, active branch of mathematics which is central to almost all other areas of mathematics, both pure and applied, as well as computer science, the physical and social sciences, and engineering. It entails an extensive corpus of theoretical results as well as a large body of computational techniques. Unfortunately, in recent years the content of the linear algebra courses required to complete an undergraduate degree in mathematics has been depleted to the extent that they fail to provide a sufficient theoretical or computational background. Students are not only less able to formulate or even follow mathematical proofs, they are also less able to understand the mathematics of the numerical algorithms they need for applications. Certainly, the material presented in the average undergraduate linear algebra course is insufficient for graduate study. This book is intended to fill this gap by providing enough material "theoretical and computational" to allow the student to work independently or in advanced courses. The book is intended to be used in one of several possible ways: (1) as a self-study guide ; (2) as a textbook for a course in advanced linear algebra, either at the upper-class undergraduate level or at the first-year graduate level ; or (3) as a reference book. It is also designed to prepare a student for the linear algebra portion of prelim exams or PhD qualifying exams. The volume is self-contained to the extent that it does not assume any previous formal knowledge of linear algebra, though the reader is assumed to have been exposed, at least informally, to some basic ideas and techniques, such as the solution of a small system of linear equations over the real numbers. More importantly, it does assume a seriousness of purpose and a modicum of mathematical sophistication on the part of the reader. The book also contains over 1000 exercises, many of which are very challenging. Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description All the concepts and topics of matrices, sets and elementary abstract algebra needed for subsequent use are included. The book also contains examples and counter-examples of the concepts used in the text. The emphasis throughout is on a holistic understanding of linear algebra and therefore the overall tone of the book is rigorous and advanced but also clearly defined and highly approachable. The author has drawn upon his many years experience of teaching the subject to write a book that will be valued by all keen mathematicians. Contents 1. Matrices and Linear Equations 2. Sets and Algebraic Structures 3. Vector Spaces, 4. Linear Transformations 5. Algebra of Linear Transformations 6. Dual Spaces 7. Diagonalization 8. Inner Product Spaces 9. Concise. There is a distinct lack of examples and exercises, and the exercises that are given have no solutions provided. This means that it is very hard to rectify any misunderstandings you may pick up. This book makes for an excellent companion text, and serves admirably for review purposes. But if you need to learn how to apply the abstract concepts, you will want a second text that contains plenty of examples and exercises. As a lecturer once told me: Mathematics is not a spectator sport. You have to do it, not just read about it.
A must have for any first course in linear algebra |

Editorial Review Product Description Thanks to the advent of inexpensive computing, it is possible to analyze, compute, and develop results that were unthinkable in the '60s. Control systems, telecommunications, robotics, speech, vision, and digital signal processing are but a few examples of computing applications. While there are many excellent resources available that focus on one or two topics, few books cover most of the mathematical techniques required for a broader range of applications. Fundamentals of Linear Systems for Physical Scientists and Engineers is such a resource. The book draws from diverse areas of engineering and the physical sciences to cover the fundamentals of linear systems. Assuming no prior knowledge of complex mathematics on the part of the reader, the author uses his nearly 50 years of teaching experience to address all of the necessary mathematical techniques. Original proofs, hundreds of examples, and proven theorems illustrate and clarify the material. An extensive table provides Lyapunov functions for differential equations and conditions of stability for the equilibrium solutions. In an intuitive, step-by-step manner, the book covers a breadth of highly relevant topics in linear systems theory from the introductory level to a more advanced level. The chapter on stochastic processes makes it invaluable for financial engineering applications. Reflecting the pressures in engineering education to provide compact yet comprehensive courses of instruction, this book presents essential linear system theoretic concepts from first principles to relatively advanced, yet general, topics. The book’s self-contained nature and the coverage of both linear continuous- and discrete-time systems set it apart from other texts. |
