The Old Farmer's Almanac 2011
I have always enjoyed this publication.It has lots of little quips and sayings as well as good advice and answers to questions you might not think to ask.Lots of weather realated things and I love to see if the forecasts for the NE are correct.Living in Vermont that can always be a challange!Thanks

how could I know
I ordered both 2010 and 2011 almanacs because I kept hearing how "the farmer's almanac is predicting..."
When ordering, there is nothing to indicate (that I saw) that I would need to purchase individual pages online to get the information for my area in the Northwest.
The books are made for Boston specifically and New England.

Great product
I always get the Almanac every year. This made it great pre ordering it. I didn't have to wait and get it at the store.

The Old Farmer's Almanac has been published since the late eighteenth century, and the 2011 edition has all of the standard information that longtime readers have come to expect.The book contains information on astronomy, including sunrise and sunset times, dates of eclipses, and tips on when to view the planets in our solar system that can be viewed with the naked eye.Miscellaneous factoids are listed in the "This Year at a Glance" section.Weather forecasts for all sections of the U.S. for November 2010 through October 2011 are issued, and there are also gardening tips and recipes.Long-range weather forecasts are not always reliable, but the publishers claim that their forecasts have an accuracy rate of 80 percent.The Old Farmer's Almanac is a long-standing American institution and always contains some interesting browsing material.

Lots of information, Low price
Published since 1792, one of the oldest periodicals in the country is still available. I like to keep two of these on hand, this year's and the edition for next.As always, great information and entertainment.The usual holiday and observance times, astronomy guide, monthly breakdowns, a very interesting article on scything, a table of measure conversions, and more.

For an amateur skywatcher, you can't beat the Old Farmer's Almanac for telling you when and where to expect interesting sights, well in advance so you can plan your viewing.If you are a professional astronomer, you should by all means use a dedicated astronomical almanac.For my level, this sort of information is all I need and far cheaper.Yes, it has a lot of ads, but that's the tradeoff for selling this amount of data for less than seven bucks.

For example, I know from my 2010 edition that there will be a full eclipse of the moon December 21st starting at 12:28 a.m. and becoming total at 2:40 a.m.My 2011 edition says the weather at that time should be sunny and warm.Is this weather information accurate?We'll find out!That's half the fun of this book. ... Poor Kindel Addition
I bought the Kindle addition thinking that it would be an excellent version to have handy.I've bought the World Almanac for years and know it's a great quick source.

The Kindle addition has no active index.In fact, the index is read only and useless.Also, the charts are not scanned at a high enough resolution to be easily readable.They are pretty much useless too.Suggest you avoid the 2010 Kindle edition.Maybe for the 2011 edition they will spend a little more time and make it as useful as the paper version.

... a complete reference book. It doesn't have analysis, but has facts. Early times to current times, science to sport, government, economics, all the arts and much, much more, the statistics are here. Have a question? This book probably has the answer.I buy the newest edition every three or four years and give my older one away, making someone else happy too.

excellent source of information
The information contained in the World Almanac is always very useful and interesting.I particularly enjoy the sections on population, climate, and geography.

The best World Almanac
I believe that this book is my best work's tool I have ever had. As a journalist I can find any information I need in The World Almanac and Book of Fact. And any news is complete ad exhaustive. I buy it every year and can't stay without it.

Kindle Edition review
I am reviewing the Kindle edition.I should have looked at the reviews more carefully before I purchased and realized that there were almost no Kindle reviews.I thought that as I was looking in the Kindle section the reviews were all for the Kindle edition.Not the case- they are all lumped together - Hardback edition, paperback edition and Kindle edition.

The Kindle edition has several large problems compared with the print editions.First of all, for some reason, there are large omissions from the print editions.I have no idea why since size should not be a factor when creating the electronic version.You actually are getting a greater volume of information when you buy the paperback.

Secondly, all the charts and graphs are scanned in somehow and are difficult to read.If the resolution of the scan was better, it might help.However, most of these tables could be made electronically just like the text.After all, that is how they are originally made before they are published in print form.Now I grant you that it must be more difficult to publish an almanac electronically compared with, say, a John Grisham novel (which is just one really large text file), but this is what the electonic medium should be about.

Also, the full index is not present in electronic form - just the table of contents.This makes it very difficult to find particular information you want to look up.Say you want to know the state flower of Indiana.The best you can do is find that USA section in the table of contents and then turn pages - one by one - till you find Indiana and then read.You could find it in the paperback in 10 seconds - it would take minutes on the Kindle.There is no reason they could not have a detailed index at the back.

Hopefully, this will get better as electronic book publishing improves over time.I have always thought it would be great to have an almanac on a device like the Kindle or Ipad to have all this info at your fingertips, but it will have to be in a much improved published format to be really useful. ... The American Patriot's Almanac
The American Patriot's Almanac by William J. Bennett is a wonderful slice of history presented in a very unique way, almost in a "devotional" style. An excerpt of reading and learning every day. As my friend was looking it over, she mused that this would be a great book to read with children, to give them a greater appreciation of history and to spark discussions and I agree!

The book is well written, with a plethora of facts and interesting, colorful personalities. There are plenty of quotes and great sayings. Since it is organized in little daily doses of reading and the dates correspond to a date in history (like a famous event or birthday) it seems at time to be a little disjointed, at times I wanted to know more information, but that is not what this book is for. It is inspiring and enjoyable to learn more about history, and most of what I read was new to me, or at least with a few newly discovered facts. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to share it with my kids. This book is packed with information and is a delight to read.

Do you like history? In William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb's book The American Patriot's Almanac, history fills the entire year. On each page you will find a new "on this day in history." Every day has a story relevant to the date, along with other notable facts. For example, April 13th is the day Thomas Jefferson was born. After a story about Jefferson, quoting Franklin D. Roosevelt's dedication of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington., D.C., the authors list four other facts that make the 13th of April unique. Three hundred sixty-five days and over two hundred years of history are packed into the pages of this book.Then, at the end of each month, the authors provide bonus material, like facts about various flags, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution.

Though not light reading, as a novel could be, the Almanac does not cram too much information onto each page. Taken one entry at a time, this book is an excellent resource in the home, school, or any place where you want to learn more about the history of America. The Almanac is an historical resource, not only for those who love history, but for anyone who wants to learn more about America. I highly recommend it as a great source of inspiration and information.

Interesting -Not captivating
As titled, it is an almanac, not a story. Facts are chronologically gathered to show each day in U.S. history. Fine for occasional gems, but my interest flagged very quickly

Very Interesting - Holds A kid's attention
We took the kids on a two-week long road trip across the country. My eldest daughter brought this almanac along to keep her mind occupied. We did not make it through the first day of the trip without having to stop at a bookstore to purchase a second copy for our younger son. Both of them took turns reading aloud and sharing different facts. It made for a very special trip. We are not familiar with the author Curtis Malarkey, but if we knew of other book he has written we would be certain to get copies ... multiple copies.

My son loves it!

Published in 1949, shortly after the author's death, A Sand County Almanac is a classic of nature writing, widely cited as one of the most influential nature books ever published. Writing from the vantage of his summer shack along the banks of the Wisconsin River, Leopold mixes essay, polemic, and memoir in his book's pages. In one famous episode, he writes of killing a female wolf early in his career as a forest ranger, coming upon his victim just as she was dying, "in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes.... I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view." Leopold's road-to-Damascus change of view would find its fruit some years later in his so-called land ethic, in which he held that nothing that disturbs the balance of nature is right. Much of Almanac elaborates on this basic premise, as well as on Leopold's view that it is something of a human duty to preserve as much wild land as possible, as a kind of bank for the biological future of all species. Inspiring
I had read a smaller paperback version of this before, and bought this version as a gift.The photography is a truly beautiful addition, and in keeping with the spirit of the writing.Each word is carefully chosen, and the style is simple, poetic, and quietly powerful.This is a very special and unique book, one to be savored.

Great Book
A classic book with a coffee table appearance. A little large considering how thin a book it is though.

An early deep ecologist
"A Sand County Almanac" by Aldo Leopold was first published in 1949. I have the Oxford University Press paperback edition (the one with the honkers at the cover). As far as I understand, this edition contains all of the original work. Other editions leave out parts of sections II and III. The OUP edition is beautifully illustrated by Charles W. Schwartz.

Although less known than Carson's "Silent Spring", Leopold's "A Sand County Almanac" is considered a classic by the conservationist and environmentalist movements. Leopold was a leading conservationist himself and a co-founder of the Wilderness Society, an organization devoted to the expansion and protection of wilderness areas. Deep ecologists consider "A Sound County Almanac" a precursor to their own philosophy, because of Leopold's attempt to formulate a "land ethic" which takes into consideration the entire "biotic community", not just humans. Said Leopold: "A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise."

Most of the almanac consist of short descriptions and reflections on wildlife, most of them based on observations around Leopold's backwoods farm in Wisconsin. He seems to have deliberately obtained a small and run down piece of property. Occasionally, the area was so flooded that Leopold couldn't make it to his job (he was professor at the university of Wisconsin-Madison).

Often, Leopold's sketches simply deal with the beauties of trees, flowering plants and animals (such as honkers). The author also writes about his hunting trips - in contrast to animal rights activists, Leopold was no vegan. However, he seems to have given up killing large mammal predators, preferring instead to hunt birds strictly for food. Still, this part of the book will definitely be objectionable to animal liberationists, as when Leopold glowingly retells a childhood memory of his first (and succesful) duck hunt.

At other times, Leopold's descriptions of nature and wildlife have a more political or philosophical tinge. A recurrent theme is the interdependence of living organisms, as when Leopold muses that his refusal to deal with various forms of tree sickness around his farm has made the environment more diverse. A nostalgic encounter with a Silphium plant becomes an opportunity to bemoan the disappearence of the original praire landscape. The author admits to like aspens, tamaracks and cottonwood, three species of trees heartily hated by his neighbours, not to mention foresters. The message is clear: the trees are good in themselves, they are aesthetically pleasing and make the environment more diverse and interesting. That they are economically unviable or a nuisance to humans should be irrelevant. Leopold's panegyric to the extinct passanger pigeon is my favourite piece. The fact that humans can mourn the loss of the pigeon, while the pigeon cannot mourn the loss of humans, is to Leopold what really makes us higher than the brutes.

In the third section of the book, called "The Upshot", Leopold presents his philosophical views. He wants to extend ethics to all of creation: animals, plants and the land itself. He attacks the massive tourism in wildnerness areas, and in general opposes human encroachments on wild nature. He doesn't idealize farmers as somehow being closer to the land. Quite the contrary: there are plenty of sharp attacks on farmers in this book, farmers who farm for profit only, and take conservationist measures only if given handouts from the public treasury. It seems that Leopold is calling for more government regulation. National parks should be made much larger by buying out farms or compensating the farmers for livestock lost to predation. Obviously, this can only be done by state or federal authorities.

"A Sand County Almanac" criticizes the utilitarian and economic ethos of modern civilization, where animals and plants are saved only to the extent they are believed to be useful to humans. The author believes that only about 5% of the species of "higher" animals and plants found in Wisconsin have economic value for humans. Yet, all species have the right to exist, since the stability of the environment or "biotic community" as a whole depends on it. (Presumably, this principle also applies to environments that aren't economically useful to humans.) I get the impression that Leopold was somewhat pessimistic about the prospects of saving nature from the encroachments of modern civilization. The siuation has hardly improved since his death in 1948.

Despite its descriptions of animals and plants, "A Sand County Almanac" isn't a natural history. Nor is it a stringent philosophical work. The chapter on the land ethic isn't argued at great length. "A Sand County Almanac" is rather a series of short meditations on nature, wildlife and the human predicament. If you like it or not probably depends on your mood or personal attitude.

People who feel nothing when walking in a park or visiting a duckpond won't like the "real" nature sketches in this book. Those who admire the steelworks of Hank Rearden or railways of Dagny Taggart will probably need some artificial substance to get through the almanac. As already noted, animal rights activists will (ironically) be horrified by the author shooting grouse, partridges and ducks. Even more ironically, the almanac might struck avid hunters and outdoorsmen as too boring. Most of the time, Leopold doesn't stray far from his small farmstead and the beloved tamaracks. He is no Bernd Heinrich, hot on the trail of wolves in Yellowstone and fascinated by their blood-curling hunts. Nor is he ready to throw geese to caged, hungry ravens just to see some action!

"A Sand County Almanac" is a a book for those who like solitude, peace and quiet, and don't necessarily identify wilderness with Alaska or the Rockies. A bit of nostalgia about what has been lost will also help you grasp the deep ecology of Aldo Leopold.

This book launched a new strain of environmental ethics.It's very well written and insightful.

A Sand County Almanac takes the spirit of Thoreau's Walden and translates into modern, pragmatic language. Leopold's "Land Ethic" is the basic principle on which all responsible conservation action should take place. The "Ecological Conscience" which forms from affinity with the land is a key to human health, as well as ecological harmony. Classic knitting book
Interesting stories with valuable tips and observations on knitting.Great for all types of knitters.

One of my favorite books
This is one of my favorite knitting books. The first copy I bought, because it had refootable socks in it. I hadnt knitted much of anything but socks at that point. I got intrigued by the pi shawl and knit one, which actually ended up an afghan. EZ knitted the way my grandmother did, a few measurments then went at it and made us all sweaters that fit. It was the first EZ book I read, I then bought a couple more of her books, and found them usefull. Knitting without Tears taught me a lot as I ws learning to knit something other than socks. I let someone else borrow my Knitters Almanac, never got it back, and just reordered it because I miss it. Its small enough to go in my purse, and I enjoy re reading it. I recomend this book to anyone who likes to knit and has an open mind about not following patterns exactly.The patterns in the book work well, and she encourages experamentation.

entertaining and informative
This is a lovely read and has lots of interesting patterns. A quirky perspective shines from the text.

This is great!
Elizabeth Zimmerman's recipes for her knitting are a little vague, but that is so you can make them the way you want them, not the way you think she meant the pattern to be. Typical EZ. Great techniques, great projects, just great!

Magical Almanac 2011 good book.
I buy these almanacs every year since 1999 the grey calendar pages are a bit drab depressing I tend to read my almanacs when the cold seasons start and the grey pages in he middle of the book well that is one star less.
A variety of info always in the almanacs something to gain ideas insight a good read.

Updated Knitter's Almanac
Its great to see this knitting classic updated in a larger hardback version, with larger print, color pictures, and some things re-knit in todays yarns.EZ fans everywhere will want to have this new version!The Almanac features lovely things to knit for each month of the year with accompanying story and instructions from Elizabeth.It feels like sitting around and knitting with your beloved grandmother.

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee writes the new introduction and EZ's daughter adds some relevant clarifications here and there.Otherwise, its the same EZ instructions we've come to know and love, the long written out version and the "pithy" version.The charts are still hand-drawn, I'm surprised they didn't update those too.

Not one of my favorites
EZ as she's called was a wonderful knitter who wrote books for people who didn't want to have everything in a pattern written out. She preferred to give an outline of what the pattern would end up as and a mathematical way of doing shawls and other items. I am one of many who just can't figure her methods out or make them work even after years of knitting and designing things myself.
This is a good book if you want to be freed to do whatever you want in making a knitted garment, but it isn't a roadmap of what you need to do to make it. She liked to be daring and this book has shown many people that they can be too.

A worthwhile purchase, even if you already have the original book
I already have the older edition of the Almanac, so I was of two minds whether it was worthwhile to spend the money on the commemorative edition.I am so glad I did!Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's intro is exactly what I would want to say about Elizabeth Zimmermann, except that she says it so much better than I ever could.And the book itself is much better in many ways.The new color photos are gorgeous, and I love that they mimic the layout of the original photos.The samples are beautiful in themselves, and really show off what can be done with EZ's ideas with all of the wide variety of yarns we have available to us now.The larger format and larger print make the volume much more readable, and I find I am slowing down to actually enjoy EZ's writing and stories, instead of skipping from project to project.

I would recommend purchasing this book to anyone, even if they already own the earlier edition. ... Read more

not what I thought
Until I received my book, I didn't know that it was made for Boston and the East Coast.To get information for my area in the Northwest, I need to go online and purchase pages.
I am making this into a gift for someone who lives in the East.
I scanned a few pages before going for the weather predictions, and I liked a lot of the information.
I am still let down.

As far as a review goes, there isn't anything to be specific about.When I logged onto Amazon.com to find an almanac, I knew it would be there and contain the info I was looking for.The issue on my mind was the price.I purchased the 2009 Almanac and didn't want to pay more for the 2010 Almanac than I did the 2009 almanac.The seller fit my needs and the rest is history.I will recommend to all both Amazon and the seller!Keep up the good work!

A Family Almanac
I bought this book only for curiosity, but I like it. If you wish to immerse yourself just for a while in the atmosphere of the old and the most traditional US countryside, this is the right book for you. In this Almanac, you can find a lot of information about calendar, food, gardening, health & home, husbandry, nature, weather and much news "with a pleasant degree of humor". Don't forget that this book is fitted for Boston and the New England states, but it got special corrections and calculations to answer for all the USA. It's also interesting the large number of astronomical calculations.

Kindle version review!
I bought this on Kindle a couple of days ago and while the articles are interesting I mainly purchased it for the moon calendar...which must have been an image but it isn't included in the Kindle version. I have tried changing my screen orientation as well as text size and figured maybe it's just because I don't have the DX, so I downloaded the Kindle software for my PC and it still isn't in the book! The table of Contents isn't terribly user friendly either.
I was really excited to get wiccan reference material that I can carry with me discretely on my Kindle but I'm very disappointed in the publishers for not ensuring that all the material actually appears in the electronic version. Overall I'd say pick up the paperback copy since they didn't seem to take much care in converting this to the Kindle.

Everybody should have "Nutrition Almanac" as a reference book
to find information on food, it's function in the human body and

I received the Nutrition Almanac Saturday from Pacific Trails Books. They mentioned that they purchased the book from a library. They also mentioned that the book was soiled. They did not divulge that information when I ordered. In any case, I mailed everything they sent me back to them. I also included a letter as follows:

We got this piece of trash Saturday, September 20. It is totally unacceptable. I am glad that our staff did not see it on Monday.

I packed it up and mailed it today, September 22.

I did not want to touch that book. I washed my hands numerous times after packaging it.

It is yours and you are under no obligation to do anything. I suggest that you toss it!

It is unconscionable to offer the condition of that book on Amazon. We do purchase items and books from Amazon...and have been satisfied with their advertised products and sellers.

In the future, we will only purchase "new" if your firm is selected as the seller.

Unfortunately, it is a lose-lose situation for both of us.

We do want a new book, latest edition, and will check with Amazon soon.

The book insiders read
I have read every edition of the Almanac since 1990.Technology changes, yet the prose and percise analysis from Barone is succinct, accurate and I dare say addictive.This is not a book you pick up and read from start to finish.Rather, a resource to help you understand the recent history of our republic, and the people who represent us in Congress.

The true treasure I find is reading edition after edition and watching the changes in congressional districts and how and why people get elected.It is educational and insightful in a era of 30 second television ads.Read this, look at Larry Sabato's crystal ball (online) and watch the polls from Real Clear politics.In a short time, you will have a informed opinion and educated guess on how the 2010 election will break down, seat by seat.Quite amazing!

Good comprehensive resource
This edition lives up to the quality of prior editions, which is saying a lot. I bought my first edition back in the 70s, and I get an updated version every few years. This book is a must for political bloggers.

Great Political Book
Purchased this almanac to learn more about the political leanings and motivations of present politicians in office.Very interesting information on who is running our country.Also general political analysis of districts and other political facts you won't find elsewhere very easily. Our country is undergoing major political upheaval and it is time for the average citizen to be informed rather than blindly picking candidates because they belong to a certain party.Highly recommended book for those who care ragardless of party affiliation.

Indispensable Political Data
Since 1972, when Michael Barone, Grant Ujifusa, and Douglas Matthews first published the Almanac, these biennial books have constituted a dynamic resource for anyone interested in the American political scene.The current volume, like its predecessors, is enjoyable simply to page through. It is of enormous value, however, to anyone who wants to evaluate or expand on political information gained from other sources, whether journalistic, scholarly, or personal.

Does the book have any faults? Yes. Data on backgrounds of legislators sometimes contained errors. In at least a couple of cases the authors supplied conflicting information in different segments of biographical data. Moreover, the definition of military service can be perplexing, omitting interpretation of reserve service (active or inactive?) and in one case including even ROTC service in college. (I mention military service here only because it does constitute one of the variables used in the authors' analysis of voting and demographic characteristics.)But problems are minor. The charge of Republican political bias has no validity. Michael Barone is a conservative but he and his co-author, Richard E. Cohen, longtime correspondent for the highly respected, nonpartisan National Journal, have scrupulously avoided unfair selection of information or unfair judgments. They provided a vast array of verifiable empirical data, and in their narrative an individual's political party affiliation played no part in the selection of examples of praiseworthy or embarrassing behavior.

It has become a cliché to describe a book as indispensable--no human would have time to read all books so designated--but for anyone interested in understanding American politics as observer, student, or participant, this book comes closest to deserving the label.
