Product Description
Adventures in Persevering, Pioneers of the 20th Century gives insight into the ways people lived and coped with shortages and hardships of the Great Depression. It reads like a novel as it takes a family through many changing situations, the death of the mother when 7 children were from 2 yrs to 18 yrs old, the sacrifices made to hold them together, and later contributions of each. Many historically significant events, places and people are involved: Early pioneers (& Indian influences), the development & benefits of irrigation systems, the discovery of an ancient waterwheel, and benefits that resulted from irrigation. The family pioneered in Eastern Oregon, grubbing out sagebrush to make productive farms "blossom as the rose."A devastating hailstorm occurred, but was overcome.Changes in school systems, and the influence of education on members of the family and communities are involved.Family values, preparation and preservation of foods, and equipment changes are given.Challenges occurred during and because of WWII, including a little known strike on the Oregon Coast.Members of the family participated in it and in the Korean War.Progress of each family member contrasts the changes in modern farming, lumber harvest, and space opportunities.Maps, poetry, anecdotes, and many pictures enhance the book, both B/W and color, which is available in electronic document. ... Product Description
In the summer of 1949, the Cold War came to Peekskill, New York, as two proposed Paul Robeson concerts were marred by the protests of local veterans' organizations. The protests exploded into violence as area residents joined in the protest. This event provides important insights into the nature of American anti-communism in the early Cold War. The riots, and anti-communism in general, have long been portrayed as the result of political manipulation. This text suggests that it is more a rational response to local, national and international events than it is a product of political conspiracy. The author seeks to rectify the usual overly-simplified view by examining the cause-and-effect relationships that led to the events, within the larger context of the Cold War. ... Read more

Product Description
Negotiating Identities in 19th- and 20th-Century Montreal illuminates the cultural complexity and richness of a modernizing city and its people. The chapters focus on sites where identities were forged and contested over crucial decades in Montreal’s history. Readers will discover the links between identity, place, and historical moment as they meet vagrant women, sailors in port, unemployed men of the Great Depression, elite families, shopkeepers, reformers, notaries, and social workers, among others. This is a fascinating study that explores the intersections of state, people, and the voluntary sector to elucidate the processes that took people between homes and cemeteries, between families and shops, and onto the streets.

This book will be of interest to a wide range of social and cultural historians, critical geographers, students of gender studies, and those wanting to know more about the fascinating past of one of Canada’s most lively cities. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the first historical analysis that reveals the depth and scope of the contribution that the Kennedy family, professional staff and outside collaborators made in creating the John F. Kennedy presidential campaign image. Documenting the origins of this ground-breaking strategy as the combined result of both 1920s Hollywood film production and propaganda films in Europe during the 1930s, it sheds new light on the effectiveness of the Kennedy influence during the 1960s and up to the present. The Kennedy boundary-spanning approach to the development and dispersal of public/private information has since become an integral component of media-based politics. The business of enhancing the aesthetics of the run for the presidency through pictorial and cinematic representation has become an essential contributing factor in many of the more controversial aspects of Hollywood filmmaking, as well as a governmental propaganda resource. The work particularly examines the campaign film "The New Frontier". ... Read more

Born from the bold, provocative aircraft nose art splashed across war birds of World War II, Lowbrow Art was carried to the streets by the mechanics and car builders of the 1950s and 1960s. Dripping with rich color, street-level sensibilities, and flamboyant style, Lowbrow Art was custom built in those middle decades of the twentieth century around racy cars and racier women. Presented here in over 250 full-color images, is the contemporary artwork of twenty ambitious ladies, each a talented artist who has staked a claim in this outsider art genre, once produced solely by and for men. In the text, each artist's story is presented along with her work and essays from Chris Pfouts and Anthony Ausgang. Enjoy and relate to this distinctive art style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Treat!
This book seems long overdue, though at the same time it's hard to wonder why the women of the "lowbrow" art movement had to be relegated to their own book (rather than integrated more equally into other books on the genre). But hey, we gotta be grateful for what we get -- and boy, do we get some *great* art in this book.Sherri Cullison writes with real insight and warmth for her subjects, and with this many artists featured (twenty!), there's a lot to look at.One could almost say too much -- if I have any, mild, criticism of the book it's that the selection of artists is all over the map. There's "Juxtapoz" art stars like the astonishing Isabel Samaras, confrontational Niagara, always appealing Lisa Petrucci as well as the pleasures of new discoveries (Andrea Tucker -- wow!), but then there's questionable choices who seem like they need to log a few more miles of art road before they merit inclusion in a book like this. But that shouldn't stop you from purchasing and enjoying this exceptional book, guaranteed to give both your brain and your eyeballs a workout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fan-damn-tastic!!!!
In a world of artsy-fartsy so called "cutting edge" artists, it is so refreshing to find an author who brings us the REAL DEAL when it comes to the Ladies of Lowbrow Art. Sheri Cullison's gorgeous folio, brings us some of the world's finest female talent. I have always been a fan of Lisa Petrucci's "Kiddle" cuties, and who doesn't love Blood-Bath McGrath's super sexy style... But, trust me, the real breakout artist of this particulaer tome is the amazing Kirsten Easthope! Thank God someone has given our beloved old bowling pins a proper home. I ended up buying two of them right off of her Queenpindeluxe website!!! They are truly amazing in their detail, and a real homage to the great artists of the pin-up era. Bravo Girls!!! I can't wait to see where these girls take us in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough Noir Dames Go Van Gogh
If Lizabeth Scott had spawned a bunch of brush-wielding brats they'd be aptly represented by this amazing compilation of cocktail guzzling, cleavage bursting, chain smoking harpies. The boy's club is over as of the publishing of this terrific book. Lowbrow art is no longer an exclusively masculine enterprise, and the results are more varied than their macho counterparts.
Outstanding artists include Sharon Leong's pulp fiction insanity, Rebecca Seven's superhero erotica, Lisa Petrucci's toy dementia, Vicki PopTart's rockabilly fever dreams, Niagara, and Christine Karas, among others. Half the fun is discovering these artists and picking out your favorite.
Sherri Cullison has done an outstanding job bringing these hard-boiled art dames together and you need to catch this wave before these fatales get too big for the trendy, tiny galleries. ... Read more

Product Description
In the twentieth century more people spoke English and more people wrote poetry than in the whole of previous history, and this Companion strives to make sense of this crowded poetical era. The original contributions by leading international scholars and practising poets were written as the contributors adjusted to the idea that the possibilities of twentieth-century poetry were exhausted and finite. However, the volume also looks forward to the poetry and readings that the new century will bring. The Companion embraces the extraordinary development of poetry over the century in twenty English-speaking countries; a century which began with a bipolar transatlantic connection in modernism and ended with the decentred heterogeneity of post-colonialism. Representation of the 'canonical' and the 'marginal' is therefore balanced, including the full integration of women poets and feminist approaches and the in-depth treatment of post-colonial poets from various national traditions.Discussion of context, intertextualities and formal approaches illustrates the increasing self-consciousness and self-reflexivity of the period, whilst a 'Readings' section offers new readings of key selected texts. The volume as a whole offers critical and contextual coverage of the full range of English-language poetry in the last century. ... Read more

Product Description
This book advances the theory that a potential leading export sector--in this case, the oil sector--is capable of inducing economic growth even in peripheral countries where the product line is primary in nature. In Venezuela, the oil sector has contributed directly and indirectly to the development of the country's overall economy, particularly from 1936 to 1973, when that sector met the criteria of a leading sector, i.e., one that expands rapidly and obtains a large specific size relative to the economy as a whole. Oil investment in Venezuela contributed to the fiscal sector, the foreign sector, GDP, income, backward and forward linkages, the multiplier and accelerator effects, and the retained value of total expenditures. In spite of recent efforts to diversify the production and export mix, the Venezuelan economy continues to remain heavily dependent on oil production for export. ... Read more

Product Description
This excellent overview of 20th-century American sculpture offers a rare opportunity for art lovers, history enthusiasts, and armchair travelers to visit an intimate garden that adjoins the most famous house in America.

Since 1994, the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden at the White House has hosted eight exhibitions, featuring sculpture by Isamu Noguchi, Georgia O'Keeffe, Alexander Calder, Allan Houser, Martin Puryear, and many other outstanding artists. Each show was curated by a major American museum and photographed by David Finn to create a lasting record. Those striking images, together with Finn's notes about each work, may now be enjoyed in this book.

A foreword by Hillary Rodham Clinton describes the inception of the idea for the exhibitions, and an introduction by White House curator Betty C. Monkman details the history of the gracious Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.

DAVID FINN has photo-graphed and written extensively about such sculptors as Canova, Benvenuto Cellini, Henry Moore, and Marino Marini. A founding partner of the public relations firm Ruder$Finn, he is based in New York.

BETTY C. MONKMAN, curator of the White House, has contributed to several books, including Abrams' Official White House China.
