Once again, I will use this book in my Indian Lore classes.The pictures make the book.We all need to know more of our past history in order to live our future.

Superfically informative, not much more, if that much
Biggest example of not just being superficial, but actually being uninformative?

This book has NOT A WORD about the massive lawsuit by multiple tribes against the Federal government over unpaid and mismanaged mineral royalties fees from various mineral rights on tribal land. This lawsuit got President George W. Bush's Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, multiple contempt of court citations.

Since this is a Smithsonian book, my first, skeptical thought is this is a "don't bite the hand that feeds you" reflex.

That said, although this is the most egregious example of superficiality, or worse, in general, such things as allotment, disestablishment of tribes, Reclamation dams flooding tribal land, and more, get short shrift.

In short, this reads like a coffee-table lite book that has enough on how federal policy towards Indians was wrong to clear a low level of basic historicity, and not much more.

It's the first American history book I've read by the Smithsonian. I'll be even more skeptical of future ones. ... Read more

A slight bias
I liked the concept and the format for a quick review.But as I read through the book and came to the chapters covering the years in which I was present, I noticed that events and circumstances described were not quite as "I" remembered them.By the time I finished I had noticed a distinct progressive tilt.If you start with the last chapter you will get a feeling for the tone of the book.

An elightened Brit
I'm British,but spend every vacation in the U.S. I thought it was about time I got to know as much as I possibly could of the country I visit so regularly. I decided to purchase Everything American Presidents Book: I found the book extremely interesting and informative and loved the little nuggets of revelatory facts that few people would know about. I have no hesitation in recommending this publication to anyone who wants to learn more about the men who have helped to shape the social and economic history of the greatest country on the planet.

Quick and easy review
After recently watching a wonderful 4 hour show on the Presidents on C-SPAN, I realized how much I had forgotten or never learned over the years. I was seeking a book that was interesting, quick and yet easy to carry for my bus ride to work.After looking at all the books available in Borders (ones that didn't have an obvious agenda), I would say this was a great choice. Cute Little Thing
This book is a really cute book if you want a little bit of history of the presidents..it only goes up to Eisenhower...obviously because of when it came out, but the facts are useful if you like knowing obscure details of past presidents. I'd suggest it for anyone who likes reading about things from the past. I actually found mine in my laundry room and am glad it was found. For a penny, it's definately worth it. ^-^ ... Read more

Pretty But Somewhat Subjective
I'm only a bit into this book so perhaps it takes another turn later on but a couple of things have already caught me somewhat by surprise.Here's what I've seen so far.

This book perpetuates the idea that Betsy Ross created the first American flag.This has been debated and research has shown,most thoroughly by the Smithsonian National Museum of America History that this is quite likely at best an American myth.There was no claim that Betsy Ross actually designed or sewed the flag during her lifetime.It was nearly 100 years later when her grandson, William J. Canby "presented a paper to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in which he claimed that his grandmother had "made with her hands the first flag" of the United States."I found it strange to include this retelling in a book that should give us a solid basis in American history.

Secondly, (so far) we all have our opinions of Presidents and their time in office.But to claim an opinion as a fact, leaves the entire work as suspect at best.In describing the people who have held the office of President the author states, "In the 20th century, as the United States became a global superpower, the scope of presidential power correspondingly increased.Nevertheless, among the 19 presidents elected since 1901, only Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt thus far have established historical reputations that match the most distinguished of their predecessors."

It doesn't matter if we agree with the statement or not, what matters is that it is a subjective statement.In my opinion, while this book has merit as a general reference piece, it is important to further research the ideas presented.

Collection of terrific essays
Any history buff or Abe Lincoln fan should get this book right away. (Anyone who sees my reviews on Amazon will know I do not lavish praise cheaply). All of the essays (eleven total)are well-written and thought-provoking. Everything, from the Republicans' refusal to compromise on slavery in 1860 to the depths of Lincoln's actual anti-slavery feelings, is explored. Even the essay on the Lincolns' marriage, which I was going to skip, was well worth reading. James McPherson's essay, as will not surprise anyone who has read Battle Cry of Freedom, is excellent. Not for children
While this book is full of interesting information it is not for 9-12 year olds. It's more like Grades 9-12. Roe v Wade? Margaret Sanger and birth control? I'm glad to see these issues covered but not in elementary school. Either the person who wrote the blurb for the publisher didn't read the book or doesn't have children.

I purchased this book for a teenager hoping to increase his interest in learning more about our presidents.The book has fostered his interest in reading more regarding the presidents and United States history in general. Even the adults that have looked at the book have commented "I would like to have one of these too."The offering of information and the lay-outs of each page make the book very interesting.I plan to purchase more copies as gift occasions present.

Perfect book
I purchased this book for my three year old as I have her understanding and identifying each president. I felt the book would be perfect for her to assocaite who the presidents are by face. It's working great. Each photos is perfect. This book is good for the younger children who dont learn much about presidents in school, the pictures are great along with their summary bio's. Great survey of Presidential thought and quotes.
This is a fun little quote book that is priced right.It has, in chronological order, quotes from all of the presidents under the Constitution up to Clinton.This is rather a singular book, considering the scope of what the editor has done.Some presidents, such as Lincoln, Kennedy, or Reagan who have been blesses with blarney and gab, have great humorous quotes.Some presidents have a more philosophical bent, such as Jefferson and Madison, so a quote book does not do them justice.Others, such as Grant or Silent Cal Coolidge, are taciturn, so you need to track quotes down with a magnifying glass and metal detector.

This book has ample quotes from all of the then-42 presidents, and is great for people who like quote books, public speakers, politicians, or people looking for bullet-thoughts that hit the target. ... Read more

Hail to the chief
'The Presidents', edited by Henry F. Graff, is a spectacular reference.There are essays on each of the presidents from George Washington to Bill Clinton (with a few exceptions), as well as handy reference pages at the back with quick snapshots of crucial data.

The essays are roughly 20 pages per figure, more for some and less for others (it is ironic that Teddy Roosevelt has more pages than Franklin Roosevelt, or that both Richard Nixon and George Bush the elder have more pages than Abraham Lincoln, but then, quality is not a simple calculation of page numbers).Some presidents are paired for purposes of the essays - William Henry Harrison and John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore, James Garfield and Chester Arthur are each paired, as the length of time in office for each of the former figures in the pairs is rather brief, and none of the successors from the vice presidency went on to second terms.

The essays include very brief overviews of the time before office, as well as time after the presidency (as appropriate).However, the primary focus of the information is on the policies and events during the time of the presidency; this extends to military, diplomatic, administrative, legislative and judicial matters.This is one of the best one-volume references that includes cabinet members and other leaders of the executive branch in addition to the presidents; one has but to read headlines today to realise how important these figures can be in shaping the overall image and direction of a presidency.

There is also a concluding essay on role of the first lady, from Martha Washington to Hillary Clinton.From Dolley Madison's saving the portrait of Washington as the British burned the city to the extraordinary influence of figures such as Edith Galt Wilson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton, these women are deserving of attention for their work and influence.

Perhaps the most handy feature is Appendix B, the summary tables of data on the presidents.These feature in bullet form key biographical data, election returns, major appointments, political composition of Congress, Cabinet and Supreme Court appointments, and key events arranged chronologically.The index is also very well done; at 64 pages in length, I was hard pressed to find something in the text not referenced in the index.

The essays vary in quality, but even the least of them is pretty good.The essays on the earlier presidents, because they concentrate more on details of in-office activity, filled in many gaps in my knowledge of some of the administrations.This is a book destined to be more of a library volume than a personal possession, which is unfortunate, as this is a valuable text.

Superb reference work.
This book has a short (15-20 pages) biography of each president
through Bill Clinton (remember, it was published in 1996); obviously,
it cannot give as full a history as a full, comprehensive biography
could. But for many of the presidents, it is almost impossible to find
a full, comprehensive biography, and for those interested in those
presidents, this work is invaluable. Also, each chapter has an
exhaustive bibliography, so those interested in learning more are given
the names of books, many of them out of print, to look for.

A must for any presidential history buff.

A Superb Reference
This is one of the best one-volume references on the American presidents I have come across.While some general biographical material is provided, such as how each man spent his formative years, each section is mostlydevoted to an over-the-shoulder look at the key figures of hisadministration, with benefit of historical hindsight, as they grapple withthe issues and problems of the time.Particular attention is paid todistinctive qualities that set each president apart from his peers and tokey decisions and actions that made a lasting difference to the country. This is more than a mere presentation of facts: we get a definite feel foreach man's style of leadership and even his vision for the nation.

Witheach section written by a different contributor, there is bound to be someunevenness of style and tone, and there is. Generally, each presentation isscholarly and disinterested--although by no means dry--and free fromexcessive praise or condemnation, but for two exceptions that somewhatdetract from the work. The most egregious of these is the section onFranklin Pierce, which is filled with personal gibes and, to a much lesserdegree, the section on Calvin Coolidge.This is particularly surprising inlight of the fact that such controversial figures as Andrew Johnson, WarrenG. Harding and even Richard Nixon have been handled so professionally.Butotherwise there is little to fault.

With only 15 to 20 pages devoted toeach administration, obviously many difficult decisions had to be made onwhat material to include and exclude.Yet, it is the insight that wentinto these decisions that is one of the high points of this book; indeed,there is more than enough material to satisy most history buffs.However,those looking for obscure facts or trivia about each man, except when suchdetails are directly relevant to the central issues of the time, are bestadvised to consult full-length biographies. Extensive references, includinga list of such biographies, have been provided at the end of each section.

Excellent Research Book
This book is an excellent source for presidential research. As an APAmerican History student, this book is an INVALUABLE resource. It discussesall of the major events of the presidency with some detail. This saves alot of secondary research which can delay completion of a project for days.

A very good book, yet not for everybody
This book is not for people who want to learn interesting facts about the presidents.At times the book focuses more on the president's cabinet than on himself.However, this does accuratly describe how certain presidents controlled the country.There are chapters for each president.Each essay is very knowlegdable as each essay is written by an expert on that particular president.The terms are very detailed.This book does, however, seem to exclude much of the effects of the presidents decisions.The essays at times are overly complex.But in general the author describes himself well.Each author seems to be unbiased and is quick to reveal short-comings of his particular president.The readability seems to increase with the number of president.Starting with Wilson the essays are great.Notable essays include Wilson's, Harding's, and L. White House Tales
I had no idea that so many interesting things happened in the White House. These stories should be more readily available to students because this makes history so much more fun to read.

Fun book!
This is a great book for reading in those spare moments.For me, it was not the sort of book I'd read in one or two sittings -- just a chapter here and a chapter there while waiting in a doctor's office, or sitting at the Barber shop, or reading a quick chapter before bed.

Wonderful information
More than a person should ever need to know but for ANYONE who loves hats, likes history and wants a good debunker of a book, this is it.I love this book.Use the information in it during hat tours here at the National Hat Museum in Portland, Oregon.Highly recommend this book.

Men Without Hats
I'm not so sure I buy the author's main thesis that outlines that the hat died because of anarchists, bald men and communist groups that wanted to overthrow Imperialist culture.

Bald men didn't even exist in the years before 1970 when nuclear waste was dumped in all communities, thus creating genetic mutations in the human gene pool.

It'd probably be better to examine the economic cost of producing hats in the years from 1929-1945, where you will notice that all materials went up in costs.Alpaca hair, goat mutton and felt from camels shot up because of the depression.The economic collapse ofthe hat was inevitable.To place the blame on 60's "hippies" who had long hair and fleas is blatantly absurd.

Bald Men Always Come Out on Top: 101 Ways to Use Your Head and Win With Skin

Fascinating look at a fashion phenomenon
Steinberg has written a thought provoking book about how men's hats went the way of the buffalo in America.He views the event largely through the lens of JFK and his aversion to hats, something that seems to be largely an urban legend magnified by newspaper writers eager to perpetuate Kennedy's youthful and maverick image.

When it sticks to recounting the history of hats the book is fascinating, and reading about such forgotten things as the sometimes violently enforced "Straw Hat Day" and the hat check racket powerfully convey how prevalent and important hats used to be.More images would have helped here, since the most modern readers will have little clue as to to the difference between a boater and a stingy brim fedora.

Less interesting is the recurring thread of the hat industry trying to get Kennedy to feature a hat more prominently in his wardrobe.It gets repetitive as the requests must have seemed to JFK.The backdrop of the history of the hat is better than theme of Kennedy as an icon rebuffing the hat industry as it tries to turn back the tide of bare headed men.

Hatless Jack failed to convince me that Homburgs and fedoras were cast away because they were inconvenient symbols of soulless conformity, and the lack of hats nowadays is a symptom of windblown free spirit and more liberated times.

The author makes more sense when he sites an increasingly indoor, motorized and informal society moving almost unconsciously away from a fashion than when he tries to show some sort of meaningful revolution against hats.

It's a well written, interesting book and it only drags when it goes to the JFK/Hatters angle too many times.I'm glad I read it, and it has prompted me to consider aquiring a real hat, baseball caps be damned.

Good facts, uncertain interpretation
I'm of two minds about this book. Neil Steinberg has produced a great history of the form and content of hat-wearing, and the decline of the behatted male in the United States. I learned a great deal about the industry, the importance of hats to the idea of the well-dressed man, and the many forces that came together to send the noble fedora and its cousins into their long decline. And also about John F. Kennedy.

But while the author has done a fine job with the facts, I'm still not sure I buy all his interpretation of them. He strikes me as far too willing to buy into the cliché -- true in its most basic form, perhaps, but far too exaggerated in the popular mind -- of the dull, conformist, gray 1950s and the lively, individualist, color-saturated '60s.

Perhaps he should, as the Randians would say, check his premises -- particularly his evident assumption that informality equals authenticity and self-expression. But if it is "conformist" for a man to wear a hat at a time when all men wear hats, why is it a sign of rebellious nonconformity to abandon hats when all men are abandoning them? Are we really any more individualist today, when forty-something men go to the mall dressed in the same long t-shirts, baggy shorts, and giant sneakers worn by their twelve year old sons? If you want to demonstrate individuality and self-expression through your dress today, gentlemen, the best way to do so is with suit, tie, and a well-maintained snap-brim. But, check out this book first to make sure you know when to tip the fedora, and to whom.

A quirky history of John F. Kennedy and hats.
I can't distinguish between Trilby's and Fedoras, I'm not sure I want to. They may even be the same thing. I was born in the same year that President Kennedy was assassinated, and I didn't know that there was a generally held belief that, because he didn't wear a hat at his inauguration, that he was responsible for the worldwide decline in hat wearing. Steinberg's book shows that this proposition is untrue on two counts - that hat wearing was declining throughout the Twentieth Century, and that, in fact, President Kennedy did wear a hat during his inauguration - in the procession up to it, tipping it to his father, and in the parade after it - but not in the memorable portions of it.
Steinberg's book accumulates a significant amount of information that might be classified as social history or even incidental detail - the change in fashion for hats from top hats to less formal attire; the expense of owning a hat - hat check stalls were leased out by hotels and restaurants, and the leasees were accused of keeping both the fees and the tips; the vain, though valiant efforts, of hat companies to fight the tide of hatless-ness.
He counters the view that hatless-ness was inevitable, pointing out that tie-wearing could be seen as equally obsolete and yet continued through the twentieth century.I think he's on thin ice with this argument, given the increasing popularity of `smart-casual' tieless-ness and `dress down Friday's'.
The book also paints a picture of how Kennedy represented youth, vigour and change in 1960. His bareheadedness was part of this, so, apparently were the two-button suits which he favoured.His patrician-cool style was also apparent in his dislike of the usual hoopla of politics, he vowed never to raise both of his arms together, and politely refused to don almost all headgear - hats, Indian feathers- which he was offered on the campaign trail. There is a quite effective description of the impression left by Kennedy, especially his inauguration. Steinberg poses, but does not answer, the question as to why we remember him as hatless, when in fact he had a hat, and wore it for some of the occasion.

Having read it, I am not sure why I did so, I have no interest in fashion or social history. However I would recommend it as a good, off-beat read.I think the book (I read the paperback version) would have benefited from pictures, which might have helped identify the various types of hat being referred to. One effect of this book however, is that I have started to watch black and white movies with renewed awareness of the hats, I recently watched a Jimmy Stewart movie, and was quite taken with the fact that he kept his hat on in the car.
