If you have anatomy to study and hate books and flash cards, this is great! I was finally able to SIT and STUDY thanks to this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very effective method for learning anatomy
I took A&P over thirty years ago in nursing school. I am taking it again as part of a yoga training program. This is a required text and I would recommend it for anyone learning A&P. The actions of colouring the anatomy parts and their related names is extremely effective for what you need to learn when studying anatomy. The instructions for the colours are very deliberate so that when you are doing the colouring it also reveals the relationships of one anatomical part to another. The accompanying text that describes the particular anatomical part and it's function is concise and well written.
It is also a fun way to learn your anatomy which increases your comprehension.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS COLORING BOOK IS YOUR BEST FRIEND
I used it religiously and it really got me through A&P I and II.Not only is it a great study tool for home, I took it to lab as well to help me id certain parts on the models. When you are tired of studying and think your brain is going to explode, sit down with your coloring book (even in front of the tv) and relax. The coloring will get the info into your head and it can be a good stress reliever.I have seen many classmates with other books and this one is the best by far!I got and A in both A&P I and II and I swear I owe a lot of it to this book.

Netter's Atlas is an Awesome Study Tool! Definitely one of the best anatomy tools I've ever set my eyes on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medstoodent
This is a great atlas in making you learn the structures and having them be very well differentiated. The only thing I wish it had were real cadaver pictures among the illustrations. Other than that, it is the best one that I have.

Good quality, quick delivery. All images are thoroughly labeled. Only problem is there are a few places where items are mislabeled.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning anatomy
This book provides well drawn pictures of pretty much everything. It's a great resource if you are a visual learner. Just remember that it has no discriptions of function, it is purely drawings.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition is B&W only
I love the kIndle editions but i get the impression occasionally they are hastily done. This book looks very good. I will buy it when it is redone in the color of the book.

However, I think a good idea for kindle would be to offer a free upgrade to people who purchase the book when a new copy is released for kindle. Just like with software. Then i could buy it now and know I will get the color when you rescan it. (if i knew you would do updates... And that is not for new editions of the book, that is for updates to the kindle rendering of a book which is a software upgrade issue. It would give you more credibility and customer loyalty.

Thanks.

Ps i will add more stars if i can when you add in the color and i buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy the kindle edition
When downloaded, the color in the Kindle edition is lost. It's impossible to understand the illustrations.

3-0 out of 5 stars One Glaring Flaw
I haven't read this book through, just examined the treatments of a few poses. That was enough to see that the book wasn't what I was looking for -- a quick visual reference to the muscular activity involved in a pose a la Delavier's Strength Training Anatomy. Trouble is that the illustrations highlight all involved muscles in red. I then have to go to the text to see which muscles are working and which are stretching. The stretching muscles should have been in blue so that the reader could see at a glance what's happening in the pose. I'm sure it's well done for what it is but ultimately not very helpful.

This one-of-a-kind best-seller combines the visual detail of top anatomy texts with the best of strength training advice.

Many books explain what muscles are used during exercise, but no other resource brings the anatomy to life like Strength Training Anatomy. Over 600 full-color illustrations reveal the primary muscles worked along with all the relevant surrounding structures, including bones, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue.

Like having an X-ray for each exercise, the anatomical depictions show both superficial and deep layers and detail how various setup positions affect muscle recruitment and emphasize underlying structures. New pages show common strength training injuries in a fascinating light and offer precautions to help you exercise safely.

Product Description

What if conflicts at home, conflicts at work, and conflicts in the world stem from the same root cause? And what if individually and collectively we systematically misunderstand that cause, and unwittingly perpetuate the very problems we think we are trying to solve?
Through an intriguing story of parents struggling with their troubled children and with their own personal problems, "The Anatomy of Peace" shows how to get past the preconceived ideas and self-justifying reactions that keep us from seeing the world clearly and dealing with it effectively. Yusuf al-Falah, an Arab, and Avi Rozen, a Jew, each lost his father at the hands of the other's ethnic cousins. As the story unfolds, we discover how they came together, how they help warring parents and children to come together, and how we too can find our way out of the struggles that weigh us down. The choice between peace and war lies within us. As one of the characters says, "A solution to the inner war solves the outer war as well." This book offers more than hope -- it shows how we can prevent the conflicts that cause so much pain in our lives and in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Anatomy of Peace
We read this book recently for our neighborhood book club. I highly recommend this for anyone who has any kind of relationship with other people...which is all of us! It is very helpful in making you understand your own reactions to others' actions or words. It teaches you to be true to your own self and to be at peace with those around you. If we all learned this, wars would cease.

1-0 out of 5 stars If not for all the fake 5 star reviews...
I probably would have given this review 2 stars... but because the author obviously gamed the review system with a bunch of fake 5 star reviews (seriously... go read them... they make the book sound like it's the greatest book ever written, which by the way sucked me into buying this piece of crap), I will now happily give it one HALF star.Realistically, it's a 2 star-ish pretentious pile of poop with an entirely too long and boring parable that doesn't even come close to providing any of the detail suggested by its title or introduction. The author obviously wanted to write fiction and failed because the fictional conversation-only story is bad, and because the insights held within it are lackluster and freshman year philosophy-ish at best, Buy it if you hate money and have absolutely nothing else to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Anatomy of Peace is A W E S O M E
I have read many books, about self-awareness and management, and other issues, but I have NEVER read a book like this. The Arbinger Institute nailed it. Wow. Everyone should read this book, and every manager, and every head of state, and every General.

5-0 out of 5 stars Change the World.
This book is the simple answer to the needof our World.
The drastic idea of not 'taking sides' is clearly an advantage to a peaceful life.
To activate the philosophy, each person needs to re-think and then practise keeping his heart at peace.
Having dealt with ourselves, we can put the book into the hands of our local council/government personel and wait for a change of attitude.
Remember 'big trees from little acorns grow'.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for EVERYONE
Everyone should be required to read this.
Should be a required "reading" in all Psychology classes.
Simply put, and an easy read with basic, practical, understandable
principles to produce peaceful living in yourself and those around
you. Follows the Biblical concept of "If you know the right
thing to do, and do not do it, it is sin". ... Read more

Stretching programs provide three levels of difficulty, including light stretching that can be used as a warm-up or to aid in recovery from soreness or injury. 5-0 out of 5 stars Stretching Anatomy
A well written and illustrated text. Perfect for a supplement to my PT class.I began using this text almost immediately upon receiving it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover the benefits of stretching in this dynamic guide.
If you're like me, you may do a short warm-up and then get right into your workout. Then, you might do a few stretches afterwords.

But I learned from this book that I may be missing a wonderful opportunity to gain flexibility and to heal sore, painful muscles and tendons that I've overused or misused.

The benefits of stretching are many. Here's what the book tells us:

"The following are several chronic training benefits gained from using a regular stretching program:

Improved flexibility, stamina (muscular endurance), and muscular strength. The degree of benefit depends on how much stress is put on the muscle. Medium or heavy stretches are recommended. You can do this by building up to doing long stretches of high intensity (see the next section for a detailed explanation of light, medium, and heavy stretching).

Reduced muscle soreness, aches, and pains. Use only very light stretches if muscle soreness prevails.
Improved flexibility with the use of static or PNF stretches. Medium or heavy stretches are recommended.

Good muscular and joint mobility.

More efficient muscular movements and fluidity of motion.

Greater ability to exert maximum force through a wider range of motion.

Prevention of some lower back problems.

Improved appearance and self-image.

Improved body alignment and posture.

Better warm-up and cool-down in an exercise session."

As the book says, it offers a way to see what you'd see in an xray as you stretch. Moreover, you will discover the main muscles that are being worked plus other muscles that are being stretched somewhat less.

"Because of the complexity of muscle attachments, many stretching exercises simultaneously affect a variety of muscle groups in the body and stretch the muscle groups around multiple joints. Thus, a small change in body position can change the nature of a stretch on any particular muscle. To get the maximal stretching benefit in any muscle, it is helpful to know joint movements that each muscle can do. Putting the joint through the full range of each motion allows for maximal stretching."

The book provides you with actual stretching programs.

These programs
". . . can be prescribed for anyone who is interested in improving flexibility, strength, and strength endurance. To make changes to any of these areas, you need to be involved in a regular stretching program, preferably as a daily routine or as close to that as possible. Changes will not come in a day or two but rather after a dedicated effort of several weeks. You can incorporate these programs with or without any other kind of exercise routine. According to the latest research, heavy stretching, even without any other exercise activity, can bring about changes in flexibility, strength, and muscular endurance."

Isn't that exciting! I think it is. Who can't use more flexibility, strength, and muscular endurance?

Let me tell you a bit about the layout of the book because that's important. As the cover says, this is "Your illustrated guide to improving flexibility and muscular strength."

The book is divided into body parts. For example, there's a section on shoulders, back, and chest. You see a color illustration of a male or female doing the stretch. The dark red area shows the "xray" of the muscle or group getting most of the benefit of the stretch. You're given the name of each muscle. A lighter color shows you any secondary muscles that are getting some, but less, benefit.

Then you're told the correct technique for doing the stretch followed by a short commentary that gives you additional valuable information and tips. All this one one page!

Here's the contents of the book:

Chapter 1. Neck
Chapter 2. Shoulders, Upper Back, and Upper Chest
Chapter 3. Arms, Wrists, and Hands
Chapter 4. Lower Trunk
Chapter 5. Hip
Chapter 6. Knees and Thighs
Chapter 7. Calves and Feet

"Stretching Anatomy" is an excellent resource. It provides you with much-needed information about how your body works. It helps you plan a program to use inyour warm-ups, cool-downs and rehab programs. After reading it and working with it, you aren't likely to ignore stretching again. I know I won't.

You can adapt the exercises in the book to your needs. To quote the authors, "You can customize the exercises in this book, which will allow for numerous stretch combinations. Also, this book illustrates only a portion of the available stretches. You are encouraged to experiment with these stretches by following the explanations provided. Information is also provided to enable you to explore a variety of positions in order to stretch the muscle by slightly altering the angles and directions of the various body positions. Thus, you can adapt the stretching exercises to fit your individual needs and desires."

If getting in shape, feeling good and getting the most from your workouts matter to you, you need this book. What's more, if you want flexibility, this book is simply golden. The exercises in it will help you become flexible. And when it comes to function, flexibility is an absolute must.

Highly recommended.

Anatomy of Movement presents a dynamic, integrated approach to the study of the physical structures of the musculoskeletal system and their functional relationship to the movements of the human body. In clear and concise text illustrated with more than a thousand graphic drawings, the author guides the reader on a lively tour of the muscles, bones, ligaments and joints of the arms, legs and trunk. The focus throughout the book is on anatomy not for its own sake, but in its functional relationship to the actual movements of the body in dance, exercise, and other physical disciplines. In this newly-revised edition, a majority of the thousand-plus illustrations are new or have been modified by the author from the original edition. 4-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy of Movement
Wonderful anatomy book.Good illustrations, very clear definitions. Not overwhelming to read as are some textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent way to learn anatomical terminology
I purchased this book for the purpose of learning the action of the skeletal muscles, but ultimately I think I benefited more from its presentation of anatomical terminology.Calais-Germain presents the technical terms used to describe the human body and its movements in a succinct and understandable way, and her repetition of the terms along with the accompanying illustrations is a huge help for remembering them.

after reading this book, I found I had acquired a language that not only made it possible for me to precisely describe movements, but also developed an enriched understanding of my own body and the movements it is capable of.

the only reason I give the book four stars is that the images do not always give a good sense of the three dimensional arrangement of the muscles; I was sometimes confused about which muscles were superficial and which ones were deep.Trail Guide to the Body does a much better job in this regard.

Product Description
Anatomy of the Spirit is the boldest presentation to date of energy medicine by one of its premier practitioners, internationally acclaimed medical intuitive Caroline Myss, one of the "hottest new voices in the alternative health/spirituality scene" (Publishers Weekly). Based on fifteen years of research into energy medicine, Dr. Myss's work shows how every illness corresponds to a pattern of emotional and psychological stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that have influenced corresponding areas of the human body.

Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss's breakthrough model of the body's seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions-the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life-to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. With this model, Dr. Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you simultaneously cultivate your personal power and spiritual growth.

By teaching you to see your body and spirit in a new way, Anatomy of the Spirit provides you with the tools for spiritual maturity and physical wholeness that will change your life. Amazon.com Review
What sets Anatomy of the Spirit apart is Carolyn Myss'sability to blend diverse religious and spiritual beliefs into asuccinct discussion of health and human anatomy. For example, whendescribing the seven energy fields of the human body, she fusesChristian sacraments with Hindu chakras and the Kabbalah's Tree ofLife. Fortunately, Myss is a skilled writer as well as researcher, able to ground her extensive spiritual and religious discussions byusing real-life stories and a tight writing style. Those who aresqueamish with the notion of biography affecting biology will findthis book a struggle (in one chapter, Myss links pancreatic cancerwith a man's refusal to unburden his life and start fulfilling hisdreams). 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
I'm new to the energy medicine/chakra field of study and this book explains everything simply yet detailed enough for anyone to comprehend. 5 STARS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking
Although I have some qualms with some of her 'beliefs' and justifications of human behavior and I don't quite see the connections she is trying to make with different religions and the chakra system, there are many thought provoking points that she makes that causes one to think further and seek out the 'truth.' A good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting!
I had seen this as a book, recommended by a girl sitting next to me on an airplane, who had just been through a
traumatic event. That was 3 years ago, then I saw the title again, and remembered that I wanted to read it, hence I ordered the CD version. This is a must for anyone wishing to view life's journey in a sensible, uplifting manner. Basically Caroline Myss uses all religions and myths to relieve us all of worrying about the why's of events and living in the conscious present and noticing all the good things that come our way, as she says.."even in Walmart". When we are emotionally conscious we are living our lives fully and at the same time giving to others what we are receiving, so the circle is complete.Everyone needs to read this book but listening to it is even more powerful and meaningful. 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but too little info for a med-student
I was delighted with the book in the first few months after buying it. It was the simplest anatomy text I've ever read and I didn't even need an atlas to understand the descriptions, the pictures in Gray's fitted perfectly with the text and didn't contain lots of unwanted features - only the element being described on that page. For the first time in my life I really enjoyed the anatomy reading experience.

However, I still had to put it aside and start reading the detailed descripition from a real anatomy textbook if I wanted to be able to talk at length about what I've learned. I actually hate details generally but Gray's is simply not enough for a medical student, it contains descriptions that ar FAR too concise for my anatomy course purposes.

For example, the duodenum is presented in my (romanian) anatomy book in 8 pages and the authors of Gray's managed to describe it in half a page. That's both good and bad, but for me it was mostly bad.

All in all, I guess this book wouldn't be much fun if they added more in-depth descriptions, so as it is it remains ideal for beginners (a better title would've been GRAY'S ANATOMY FOR CLUELESS STUDENTS). But since after learning every word in it I still find myself not knowing enough anatomy to pass my exams, I resent not having bought some other anatomy book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent REGIONAL ANATOMY text with pretty good drawings
In short, this is an excellent book when used in the appropriate context. It is meant to be a textbook for advanced human anatomy classes that take a regional approach (i.e. med school gross anatomy); there is no better regional anatomy textbook.

This was the main text for my gross anatomy class, and the professor also recommended Netter's Clinical anatomy (which is rich in clinical content but not the best way to learn structures/landmarks). As a textbook Grays is very good; it has a great combination of descriptive and accurate text as well as fairly detailed pictures. Personally, I wish that it had more pictures with more labeling. The drawings are not as good as Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy. Netter's Atlas, however, has no text, so I always use these two resources together.

Gray's Anatomy for Students was designed to be a textbook for REGIONAL ANATOMY classes. That is, students take a region (say Head & Neck) and learn all of the important bones, nerves, vessels, organs, and tissues in that region. A systems-based class, by contrast, teaches all of the important nerves in the body (across all regions), then moves on to all of the bones, then moves on to the circulatory system, etc. and not necessarily in that order. This is the best textbook if your goal is to truly master regional anatomy while taking a class. I am not sure it would be very useful for a systems-based curriculum so try to find out what your class involves before purchasing this book. Gray's also contains a fair amount of clinical content which is interesting, but may not actually be useful to you.

If you are considering Gray's for USMLE board review, it is much too dense and contains too much detailed information for that. For board review, get an atlas (I recommend Netter's) and a condensed text like BRS Gross Anatomy by Chung or High Yield Gross Anatomy. See if you can look through those texts to decide which format you like better. Even BRS contains way more info than you need for your boards, but is an excellent tool for mastering gross anatomy. I don't actually know much about the High Yield book. So, Gray's for Students is excellent for a regional anatomy class, not good for quick review. I should also mention that the student consult included with this book is great to be able to access the full text online from anywhere. It also allows you to download many of the images, which could be used for study and presentation.

If your goal is to teach yourself anatomy without taking a class, this book may be a good resource but is NOT the kind of book you read cover-to-cover. You will only be able to learn so much anatomy without taking a class (I tried before taking my class). Better and cheaper resources for self-teaching are the Netter Anatomy Flash Cards and the Kaplan Medical Flash Cards. The Netter cards are by region, and the Kaplan Medical cards are by system. They are both excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Organization
I'm yet another first-year medical student, and I have found Gray's to be the first text I consult when I learn a new anatomical region. Although Moore's has more detailed information (my required text, which I consult after Gray's) and Gilroy and Rohan's atlases provide better images, Gray's organization of major structures and function is clear and logical. The clean drawings make it easy to understand spatial relationships between structures, and I also find the clinical correlates helpful (as my curriculum doesn't provide many). I wouldn't say this is the only text you'd need for anatomy, but it's definitely my main reference for understanding 90% of the material.

2-0 out of 5 stars eh ok...
This was one of my worst experience dealing with someone off of Amazon.com, the book took almost a month to get here, thank god i didnt need it for class. When I ordered the book it said it was in very good condition. When it arrived, the cover was all bent and ripped, and some of the pages were the same way. Would return it, but i dont have another month to wait to get another book. I guess this is what you get for looking for the cheapest way to get things done. The sad part is that when the package arrived, it said it came from chicago, I live exactly 23 minutes from Chicago, so I dont understand why something that was at most and hour away would take a whole month to get to my doorstep.

Product Description
In this astonishing and startling book, award-winning science and history writer Robert Whitaker investigates a medical mystery: Why has the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States tripled over the past two decades? Every day, 1,100 adults and children are added to the government disability rolls because they have become newly disabled by mental illness, with this epidemic spreading most rapidly among our nation’s children. What is going on?

Anatomy of an Epidemic challenges readers to think through that question themselves. First, Whitaker investigates what is known today about the biological causes of mental disorders. Do psychiatric medications fix “chemical imbalances” in the brain, or do they, in fact, create them? Researchers spent decades studying that question, and by the late 1980s, they had their answer. Readers will be startled—and dismayed—to discover what was reported in the scientific journals.

Then comes the scientific query at the heart of this book: During the past fifty years, when investigators looked at how psychiatric drugs affected long-term outcomes, what did they find? Did they discover that the drugs help people stay well? Function better? Enjoy good physical health? Or did they find that these medications, for some paradoxical reason, increase the likelihood that people will become chronically ill, less able to function well, more prone to physical illness?

This is the first book to look at the merits of psychiatric medications through the prism of long-term results. Are long-term recovery rates higher for medicated or unmedicated schizophrenia patients? Does taking an antidepressant decrease or increase the risk that a depressed person will become disabled by the disorder? Do bipolar patients fare better today than they did forty years ago, or much worse? When the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) studied the long-term outcomes of children with ADHD, did they determine that stimulants provide any benefit?

By the end of this review of the outcomes literature, readers are certain to have a haunting question of their own: Why have the results from these long-term studies—all of which point to the same startling conclusion—been kept from the public?

In this compelling history, Whitaker also tells the personal stories of children and adults swept up in this epidemic. Finally, he reports on innovative programs of psychiatric care in Europe and the United States that are producing good long-term outcomes. Our nation has been hit by an epidemic of disabling mental illness, and yet, as Anatomy of an Epidemic reveals, the medical blueprints for curbing that epidemic have already been drawn up.

5-0 out of 5 stars shocking expose
An astouding indictment of our mental health system, revealing profit driven
curruption and self-deception pervading the institutions we rely on to provide
and regulate health care.

5-0 out of 5 stars REQUIRED READING -- the most important book to read
There are many good books that expose the lies of the pharmacetical industry about psychiatric problems. However, this book is the best. This book is more scientific and evidence-based than anything that the academic psychiatric research journals and the medical psychiatric textbooks have to offer.
This book should be required reading for all medical students, doctors, judges, welfare & social service agencies, journalism students, taxpayers, and parents. The pharmaceutical industry and the current mainstream professional psychiatric organizations care far more about their own profit, power, and prestige than they do about the health of the public. It is too bad that if mental health in America and in other "advanced" countries is to improve in the future, many people related to Big Pharma, and to the American Psychiatric Association, and to NIMH will lose their jobs. However, the health of patients, the pockets of taxpayers, the safety of our drinking water -- indeed our very lives -- must come first.
Policy changes must be made so that the public is not hoodwinked again on such a massive scale.Even the nation's brightest (that is, the best high school students who went to the best colleges, and then to the best medical schools) have been completely fooled. The current state of the field of psychiatry is emphatic proof that even professional conventional wisdom can be completely wrong.
True scientists bend over backwards to try to disprove their own pet theories and hunches.Unfortunately, psychiatry today does just the opposite.Psychiatry, by speeding down the wrong path, has misled the search for truth. In its haste in trying to travel the path it dreams about, psychiatry has done tremendous harm to society, and even killed countless individuals.
Also, current psychiatry has thrown out the important scientific principle, Occam's Razor (the principle of parsimony). It is actually a joke that psychiatry today likes to call itself "evidence-based."For a true evidence-based perspective, the public and members of NAMI should carefully read this book.W.A.T. White, Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars An authoritative account of a hidden epidemic
Robert Whitaker has presented a superbly documented and argued case for the existence of an "epidemic" of medicine-induced injury in the field of psychiatry. In the interests of promoting the sale of drugs affecting mental function a group of large pharmaceutical manufacturers have created misleading theories and beliefs, persuading the communityand physicians that certain fluctuations of normal behaviour represent diseases, attributable to chemical changes in the brain and calling for drug treatment. The drugs in question cure nothing but essentially disrupt and distort brain function. All who are concerned with mental behaviour need to read this book if the situation is to be corrected before society is permanently harmed.

Professor of Drug Policy Studies,
University of Oslo, Norway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive look at mental illness
Robert Whitaker has written a valuable, controversial book. In Anatomy, he takes on the psychiatry industry--an alliance between scientists and the drug companies that works against the best interests of people with mental illnesses. Whitaker argues the "broken brain" or "chemical imbalance" theory that psychiatrists are pushing is far from proven. I agree with this. He also contends that psychiatric drugs are increasing the total number of mental illnesses and disability claims. I'm not quite so sure about this contention. This argument seems like a confusion of correlation with causation. Yes, disability claims have risen as more people are taking medications, but I don't think that proves cause and effect. (I am not saying he's wrong, only that he hasn't proven his case).

Despite this weakness, I still recommend the book. It was a jolt to me--as a member of NAMI, I was unware that they have such close ties to the drug companies. This is a must read not only for mentally ill people, but for their families, therapists, and doctors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and important
Fascinating and shocking exploration of the way illness, especially mental illness - which seems so clearly to be social, cultural, environmental, has come to be narrowly construed in biological terms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!!!
I purchased this book with the intention of learning some basic concepts of anatomy and physiology.I seem to have developed an interest in this subject area just on hearing other friends talk about nursing, working in hospitals etc...so I figured this was a great way to start learning, and I was right!

As I read through this book (I have not completed it as of this review; only up to chapter 8), the material is presented in the simplest terms possible.Appropriate medical terminology is used when discussing certain subjects, but this book is very easy to understand. It takes more than just reading this book to comprehend what you are reading, the reader must take initiative to learn more.At times, it can be overwhelming because there are complex chemistry / microbiology parts when you get to the part about glycolosis and subjects like it, but taking your time; and re-reading over it enables you to grasp the basic concepts of the more complex parts of this book. What i found to be very helpful, is in conjunction with this book, making use of video lectures for a more interactive learning experience.I use youtube a lot, because reading this book is GREAT, but reading alone is not good enough.Doing searches on youtube for videos on things like the circulatory system, DNA and cell structures will help the reader of this book better understand what they are reading.Because not only are you reading, you can actually see how things work inside the body in terms of our anatomy and physiology.

There is a channel on youtube which I found most helpful, it is called: khanacademy. There are videos on "DNA" and "Parts of a cell" that are very helpful and compliment the reading of this book nicely! It took me a while to find this youtube channel.Be very careful as any joe shmoe can put anything up on youtube. But the khanacademy is the absolute best I have found. However, always take what you find on youtube with a little caution.I have read many reviews about the khanacademy and he has even been featured on CNN, interviewed on KPBS etc...so...just something to think about as you ready this book.

I return to college in a few months so I figured learning as much as I can beforehand will make my experience in school more enjoyable and make the learning progress smoothly. With the help of this book, hearing the terminology and topics in a classroom will not be as foreign to me as I have never studied this area before.

Overall a GREAT book; and the ONLY thing I could say needed to be improved is, not with the written material, but I feel that an interactive DVD encyclopedia made specifically to anatomy and physiology should be included with this book. This minor detail was not enough for me to lower the rating from a Five-star to anything lower. This is truly a great book at a fair price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chung Gross Anatomy book
This book arrived extremely quick and it has been such a lifesaver in my classes! Thank you so much!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review
The book was in perfect condition when I received it. There were no marks or torn pages.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too little too late
Maybe I'm too negative but when I ordered this book on the 13th I thought it would be a few days, I have waited over two weeks and still haven't gotten it.I needed it for a class and find the waiting very inconvenient.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff in There, but Hidden Amongst Irrelevant Material
There are two things I liked this book for.First, I thought they did a great job of compartmentalizing muscles in the UL & LL, making it easier to learn origins, insertions, action, innervation...although adding artery supply to the table would be helpful (it is included in the text at least). For new med students, I feel you should know that memorizing these charts will pretty much guarantee you passing, & probably getting an A, on the UL & LL written exams.Secondly, I thought there were some great figures demonstrating the actual course of nerves & arteries in the Head & Neck chapter. This was very helpful, especially concerning nerves associated with autonomic ganglia.

The good stuff ends there. This book is way too thick to be considered a review source, it's essentially a gross text with less pictures & written in bullet points. The questions are much harder than anything you'll see on your exams or boards. It is nice to have online access to the questions, but the questions are really redundant. For instance, I think there were 6 questions about subdural hematomas & bridging veins. This is pretty typical of the questions:when they aren't way too difficult, they're incredibly redundant. Finally, the clinical correlations are ridiculous in number - there are too many low yield correlations & most of them aren't very well explained.Bottom line - borrow it from a friend for the UL & LL exams, & then again in H&N if you're having trouble understanding nerves & arteries in the head.Use Road Map for everything else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough but hopefully worth it
The material is Dense and the problems are difficult but there is a detailed explination for each question. This book was reccomended to me by a professor who indicated some of his exam questions would be "inspired" by this manual.

Its a little tough to get through but hopefully it will help. ... Read more

Product Description
Understanding the role of fascia in healthy movement and postural distortion is of vital importance to bodyworkers and movement therapists. Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual and Movement Therapists presents a unique 'whole systems' view of myofascial/locomotor anatomy in which the bodywide connections among the muscles within the fascial net are described in detail for the first time. Using the metaphor of railway or train lines, Myers explains how patterns of strain communicate through the myofascial 'webbing', contributing to postural compensation and movement stability. Written in a style that makes it easy to understand and apply, Anatomy Trains provides an accessible and comprehensive explanation of the anatomy and function of the myofascial system in the body. The DVD ROM in the back of the book contains video of techniques, Anatomy Trains-based dissections and computer animations of the myofascial meridian lines.

Breakthrough look at how the body communicates, how it adapts short and long term to stress.Totally new view of a body system that has important ramifications for everyday health as well as rehabilitation.Well illustrated and articulate.Highly recommend for anyone in the health professions, bodywork etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems
It maybe took a little longer compared to other orders I have made through Amazon but came in good time and in good condition as ordered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential information for manual medicine specialists
In this handbook, Tom Myers and company have clearly and concisely illustrated a vital paradigm of functional myofascial anatomy.Starting with an updated review of the histological properties of the extracellular matrix, then building upon the embryological development and arrangement of the fascial envelopes which create continuous compartments of the body's regions, he demonstrates on the accompanying DVD the actual anatomical dissections of the slings of muscles, tendons and fascia that comprise the various Anatomy Trains. The authors have also included discussions of kinesiolgic functions, manual therapy techniques, and yoga and exercises specific to the described myofascial meridians. The information and illustrations make anatomy easy to understand, and shed a new light on postural evaluation.
As a practicing chiropractor who has used myofascial therapies such as PIR, ART, trigger point therapy and strain-counter strain techniques, this new information has provided me with a system to more accurately assess spinal and extremity articular dysfunction according to the patterns of myofascial stress in the anatomy trains.I now incorporate this holistic myofascial analysis as a primary evaluation tool for my chiropractic adjustments.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is OLD NEWS - Learn Your Medical History
B J Palmer developed these very same concepts in the 1920s and '30s. He was the son of D D Palmer who originated Chiropractic; and, yes, B J was a chiropractor, too. This "new" conception is heavily based on Palmer's work and theories on/of the HIO adjustment (Atlas Specific) and the rest of the body's response (yes, that includes associated tissues such as fascia, muscles, ligaments, and everything else -- All the way down to your toes and through your fingers). I wonder why the Sub-Occipital Region is the key and "Functional Center" of the SBL...? Hmmmmm....? Could that have anything to do with exactly what B J was teaching and practicing before Myers was even born (regarding the body's interconnectedness)? 'Cuz, you know, that's exactly what B J said eighty years ago. Chiropractic colleges have been teaching this stuff for nearly a century without all the hype and fanfare. Strange, as we all know chiropractors are "quacks" to the rest of the medical field, but when people can rip off chiropractic theories, ideas, and techniques, then exploit them as their own "discoveries" and tout their magnificence; then the medical community falls all over themselves trying to utilize these techniques and take credit for them. This book is an embarrassment to Chiropractic History. However, kudos to Myers for helping to open-up-the-eyes of the rest of the medical community to the wonders of Chiropractic Medicine. After all, it's the wellness of the patient that truly matters; something that most of the rest of the "community" seems to have sacrificed, instead, for power and profit.

(BTW, the Amazon "Review" by "Gary Cook" has the word "its" grammatically mis-conjugated as "it's," forming a conjugation where a dis-conjugation is grammatically correct. Maybe someone on the Amazon staff can correct this for the sake of adding professionalism to the site.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A RNs review from a patient/practioner's prospective
This is my second purchase of this book.I bought it to give to my physical therapist. I'm repeating my first review under my new account.

Wow! I thought I'd ordered the wrong book for my needs, which are 1.more knowledge of the process of myofascial release and 2. more understanding of places/points of anatomy. It has been a long while since I've been in school and a long time since I worked at a top teaching hospital in the Bay area in California.

I read a few paragraphs, taking care not to damage the book, because I thought I'd probably return it. HOWEVER, after a few sentences I was immediately caught up in the beauty and clarity of this work. NEVER has physiology been made so interesting. Finally, I understand so many things that were just a jumble of memorized facts in preparation for exams. This book has rekindled my love of physiology and is even undoing my dislike of anatomy. Anatomy didn't make sense to me - it was boring - it was memorization. Now I am understanding why my body is so damaged from the stresses I subject it to, but better, I understand how I can undo some damage and prevent more.

I worked on a Sports Medicine unit where famous athletes came for surgery. So much surgery can be avoided with corrective measures for chronic stressors. The medical community needs to be aware of this important material.

So bravo for such a readable work. What depth of historial findings, beautiful graphics, excellent grammar and text. I feel as though I'm in school again, but this time it is for pleasure and for pain relief.

After a few pages I tried to find out more about the author and was surprised not to see a Ph.D. by his name, although I'm not sure a Ph.D. makes one any wiser.

I totally concur with the first review.

Don't buy this book if you are looking for a simple, trendy approach to bodywork. This is so much more. ... Read more

Product Description

This Color Atlas of Anatomy features outstanding full-color photographs of actual cadaver dissections, with accompanying schematic drawings and diagnostic images. The photographs depict anatomic structures more realistically than illustrations in traditional atlases and show students exactly what they will see in the dissection lab.

Chapters are organized by region in order of a typical dissection. Each chapter presents structures both in a systemic manner from deep to surface, and in a regional manner.

This edition has additional clinical imaging, including MRIs, CTs, and endoscopic techniques. New graphics include clinically relevant nerve and vessel varieties and antagonistic muscle functions. Many older images have been replaced with new, high-resolution images. Black-and-white dissection photographs have been replaced with color photography.

A companion website will include an Image Bank, interactive software (similar to an Interactive Atlas), and full text online.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great real life pictures!
I love the real life cadaver pictures used in this book. My only gripe is that the labels are down below so I spend a lot of my time having to look at the numbers and find what it's labeled. However, this is also great for studying. But if you want a quicker reference guide, I'd go with Netter's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily helpful
The anatomy atlas (Netter's) that we had to buy as a textbook for medical school is great, but at the end of the day idealized drawings are no match for the actual photos of dissections that Rohen's Color Atlas of Anatomy provides.Several of the photos also have diagrams or (even better) CT scans/radiographs next to them, which is really helpful.I'd definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent atlas
this atlas has excellent images of real cadavers.Makes it an excellent reference for cadaver lab work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have supplemental anatomy text for professional students
I am a first year medical student and find that this is a great tool to use when for studying for practicals. For me, the two best features are:

-The lines that point to structures only have numbers on them, with a small area of the page that says what those numbers correspond to.This makes it very easy to test yourself. The downside to this is that if it is your first exposure to the structures you're looking at, you'll be constantly looking at numbers and finding the corresponding name, which isn't as quick & easy as if the lines were labeled with the name of the structure. However, this is also why it's good to have some familiarity with the structures before using this book by, say, studying the first time with a regular anatomy book.

-This being photographs of real bodies means that you see all of the tissue types in every image, and they are well labeled.I find it easier to remember what nerve or artery supplies a given muscle if I can see them both at the same time, which many regular texts don't do, at least not often enough.

As another reviewer noted and as I have alluded to, this should be used in conjunction with another anatomy book.Use a standard one to learn the structures and concepts, and then use this one to help you identify it on a real cadaver.Plus, it's always good to see things more than once.I use the Thieme Atlas of Anatomy as my primary atlas and love it.It's a relative newcomer, so you don't hear about it as often as the established giants like Netter and Grant's, but I think it's superior to either of them. The art work is incredible (better than Netter) and it includes some occasional extras peppered throughout, like small radiographs and sidenotes.

This is not a waste of money only to be purchased if you don't go to lab.The reality is that this book would be a waste of money if I had a labeled cadaver at home, at the cafe, in the little Chinese restaurant down the street, on the bus -- everywhere I can take this book to study. And speaking of labs, this book is very handy to have in the lab during dissection, as it is so well labeled and depicts images of exactly what you are doing.

Don't make this your only anatomy text.If you are in an undergraduate level course with no cadavers, this is probably overkill; just get Thieme or something. But if you're using cadavers and especially if you're being tested using labeled cadavers, you should definitely buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Necessity? Meh
Its a decent color atlas book of human anatomy (AKA the dead body book by med students). However, as long as you spend enough time in your med school anatomy lab. This book becomes pretty useless, since in the end, it is still just pictures and nothing can beat the real body's structure. Buy at your own cost, if you don't have time for lab, maybe it is helpful but even then. The pictures can get too detail and hard to read. All in all, I would avoid it and actually show up at your ana lab. Besides, your test will be base on ana lab not a picture :] ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Clinically Oriented Anatomy
One of the most hated books by students in my med school. There is a lot of pictures missing for important systems. This books throws at you a lot of detail (which you don't need to know) and fails to provide the student with a big picture. Unless you are in love with anatomy and planning to study it for the fun of it, don't buy it. There are other better books out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I don't see how this book has almost five stars. In my first semester med school anatomy class everyone had this textbook (as it was recommended by the school). After the first month maybe 2 students still used it (out of 100 students). If you already know your anatomy and have a strong background, then this book will be great. If you are new to the game then all you really need is the gray's students edition for the introduction, the netters atlas for clarification, and the brs for details.

Dont be fooled by the whole 'clinically oriented' part, it's not as great as you think. The brs will explain these same fractures/diseases much faster and clearer...on top of that the brs online aspect supplies MANY more questions.AVOID.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinically Oriented Anatomy
Really solid and really easy to understand.
Good diagrams and good relevant clinical sections.
Not a huge amount of neuro, but that best done elsewhere

Product Description

Remarkable computer-generated illustrations of the muscles used during the most popular yoga poses.

Yoga teachers and students can use this book as a visual reference to the muscles that are engaged by specific yoga poses. Each pose is shown in a full-color photograph opposite a detailed and annotated anatomical drawing that identifies the active and stabilizing muscles being used. By identifying affected muscles, practitioners can maximize the benefits of each pose and even design a personalized yoga routine that focuses on their specific problem areas.

Anatomy of Yoga explains the basics of yoga, breathing and the spine, concentrating on the body's core musculature. It covers:

  • Yoga warm-up
  • Standing poses
  • Forward bends
  • Back bends
  • Seated and twisted poses
  • Poses that balance arms
  • Inversions
  • Restorative poses
  • Sequences, such as sun salutation

There are numerous asides, including "best for" information boxes that describe the muscles that work the most during each pose. Tip boxes give hints on safety and form and outline the target muscles for and benefits of each pose. The author also suggests creative ways to modify the intensity of an exercise.

Anatomy of Yoga is an expert guide that is extremely useful for anyone interested in enhancing a personal yoga fitness routine. It will also interest yoga instructors who want a visual aid that clearly illustrates the benefits of each exercise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome study aide
These are the best study cards. My professor suggested them and I was not disappointed. The pictures are very detailed and show a layer of the anatomy at a time.Best part is they are sorted in the same way the chapters are, bones and then muscles, ect. I am not disappointed that I didn't spend $30 to buy the latest edition, the anatomy hasn't changed, and I got a great deal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as useful as I had hoped
Includes many things I didn't need and a few that I did need.I would buy these only if you are really struggling with learning anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barron's Anatomy Flash Cards
These flash cards are amazing. I wish I had discovered them when I first started out in school because they are so much better than any kind of home made flash cards. They cover a little bit of everything and are very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT LEARNING TOOL
IF A LAYPERSON HAD THESE ON A DESERTED ISLAND AND NEEDED TO PERFORM SURGERY ON A LOVED ONE, THESE WOULD CERTAINLY BE A GREAT LEARNING TOOL ON HOW TO FIND A PARTICULAR ORGAN OF THE BODY.IN COLOR AS WELL, WHICH MAKES IT A BETTER LEARNING TOOL.OF COURSE THERES MORE INTO MEDICINE THAN JUST INFORMING A PERSON WHERE CERTAIN ITEMS ARE IN THE HUMAN BODY.BUT THESE FLASH CARDS WILL GET SOMEONE THAT MUCH CLOSER TO A DEGREE IN MEDICINE.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Text For any Teacher or Advanced Yoga Student
I am a yoga teacher, an engineer and the author of "Elements and Methods of Hatha Yoga Class Design". I am very focused on application when I read and I found Dr. Coulter's book to be exceptional in that capacity. I have teased out over 40 effective mechanisms that can be directly applied to the design of a yoga class. It helps to to take detailed notes when you find a gold nugget to retain the application mechanism. For example in chapter 1 he describes the myotatic reflex. Here you learn how to move in such a way to not create tension in the body. Also one of my favorite is the mechanism of blood flow in the legs and head that he describes in the chapter on headstand. I found this book to be an invaluable resource which I am constantly reviewing. It is also written so that you do not have to be a medical professional to read it.

A must have for all yoga teachers and serious students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Manual for Yoga Instructors
I noticed an add for this book in the recent edition of the Himalayan Institute's yoga magazine (formerly Yoga International). That is a good enough plug for me! The text takes the student through a variety of sequences, not only as practice, but as a mode to explain the benefits and contraindications for anatomical differences. All aspects of asana (I mean backbends, inversions, forward bends--not every actual posture) are covered. I have no idea why it isn't a mandatory text for all yoga teacher trainings, particularly for the 500 hour ones, as there is nothing introductory to understanding how yoga conciselyrelates to the physical body. For most students who begin yoga, that is where the journey begins.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for the analytical beginner...
So I am no yogi; but, I am a serial sport hobbyist with a need for an analytical understanding of what is going on.Imitation, in a sport like yoga, is almost the worst thing in the sport.Perhaps it is only second to the illusion that you are actually doing it right when you are not.Coulter explains all the little stuff that makes yoga serious discipline and provides its reader with a lot to think about. He also helps the super novice (a group with which I am a part) know what he should be thinking and focusing on.This is utterly invaluable.I don't have the money to support a local studio and receive 1 on 1 instruction although I know how invaluable that is as well.I have recommended this text to many people; one buddy of mine is a martial artist and has found this text to be amazingly useful even in his own discpline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I found the book to be very well written and very informative. It describes what parts of the anatomy are involved in different yoga asanas, and describes how poses should be performed to get the maximum physical benefit from the exercise. Some may find it a little too technical, but that was its intent--to be, as its title states, "a manual for students, teachers, and practitioners".It contains a lot of information (622 pages); it's hard to imagine how any yoga practitioner could not find something in the book to both improve their practice and to understand how the body is executing the poses.I have been practicing yoga for nearly a decade and a half with some excellent teachers, but everytime I open Coulter's book I find something to consider or an adjustment to make in my next practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, a must for the bookshelf
As a Myofascial Therapist and Yoga practitioner, I appreciate David Coulter's excellent blend of technical knowledge and his practical insights from years of being a yoga practitioner. If you are a yoga instructor, this book is a must for the book shelf. It is not a text that you read straight through, but yet an excellent reference for your practice and teaching career. You owe it to yourself and the safety of your students to read this book. ... This book i must say is a pretty cool book, but just wasn't thee book for me. i just needed a quick reference book so i have returned this book & i now have Shirley Jones Pocket Anatomy and Physiology and it fits my needs.

2-0 out of 5 stars The kindle version of this book is terrible
This book is great, but the kindle version on mac/ipad of this book is terrible. There are spelling mistakes, sentences being repeated again and again (Box 15-5 for example). The worst thing is that, I want to enlarge a table on mac, eg table 22-1, table 22-2, it does't work! The way it is assumed to enlarge letters and tables, oppositely, made the tables smaller! I tried many ways, but I couldn't get a clear view of table 22-1 at all!
I was very pissed off. This book is purchased as a textbook! Less can I learn from kindle version than a real book!
