3-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing!
I purchased Maya (headnotes of chocolate and vanilla) and since Ibought this product, I use only this one and have used none of my other perfumes. This scent is entrancing and gives you a great feeling.I notice that others comment on this scent a lot. This is aromatherapy at its best.Mara

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, informative, and fragrant
I bought the original book from the Metropolitan Museum and thoroughly enjoyed it. The oils are of excellent quality. I had been working with aromatherapy and this book certainly broadened my knowledge. Then a friend gave me another copy for a birthday gift. As much as I like it, two was more than I needed (my duplicate is for sale).

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun!
i received this book as a gift from my boss, and ended up purchasing 2 more myself to give as gifts.very interesting histories, and lovely scents!

5-0 out of 5 stars Smells like a winner!
After reading Perfume : The Art and Science of Scent by Cathy Newman, RobbKendrick, I was hooked on wanting to know more about the fragranceindustry.I purchased this book because it's about fragrance itself ratherthan bottles, etc. This is a lovely book, although it does not go intogreat depth about the subject. But I don't think it was meant to.It's acoffee table book. However, the nicest surprise about the book are the 8fragrances that come with it.I must say, I purchased the book because ofthe fragrances but I never thought they would be as nice as they are.I amvery particular about fragrance and I find these to be absolutely splendid- and very French. They remind me of the little mini fragrance sets I'vepurchased from time to time of French lines such as Gerlain, Givenchy andGres. The whole package is well worth it if you, like me, love fragrance. ... Product Description
Introducing The World in Ancient Times, a one-of-a-kind series that combines the knowledge of scholars of ancient history with the storytelling know-how of writers of young adult fiction. Each book is made up of 24 to 26 chapters short and lively enough to hold the attention of a middle-school student. Each chapter is based on one or more primary sources from antiquity, such as a quote from an ancient historian, a well-worn coin, a piece of pottery, or a partly crumbled wall. These pieces of evidence are clues from which the authors reconstruct the world in ancient times. Most history books tell what we know; by using actual quotes and curious objects from the past, The World in Ancient Times hooks young readers into the story of not only Iwhat we know but the often more interesting tale of how we know it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A lot like many other picture book histories
What I specifically liked was some of the black marble sculptures pictured
of the first Brutus.
The book has the standard history of Rome with the Etruscans, and Carthage.
Having read some recent history of Rome during the Caesars,
I know that it glosses over a lot of detail,
to just give an overview. Ancient Rome like ancient Egypt might be a
place to visit, but I doubt few modern people could stand to live
there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to really understand Ancient Rome
Another reviewer pretty much said it: "... What a wonderful book. It has the depth of an adult book, yet is written at a young person's level..."

I picked this up for my almost 8 year old for summer learning.I think I'm enjoying it more than he his.I've learned so much.We have some other books on Ancient Rome, but this book goes into more detail with short chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Reader's Digest(ion).
This is a good book for those that are just coming to explore the Ancient World of the Mediterranean.Rome came to dominate that world and influences us even today. It is not purely by acident that we have a Senate, and that many of the buildings in Washington, D. C. resemble Greco-Roman buildings, nor that we have a republican form of government. It all comes from and through Rome. This book will give the beginning explorer information that can stand as a beginning point to mark the beginning of the exploration of this ancient culture that still influences us today. But that is its limitation, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging drama of Roman times
From a legendary prince's journey across the sea to an African general who travels with painted war elephants, the story of the ancient Roman world's history needn't be a dry one: not with Ronald Mellor and Marni McGee's ANCIENT ROMAN WORLD in hand. Yes, there are the usual primary sources lending to a research paper; but there's also the lively overtone missing from many similar coverages on the topic, using that material to create an engaging drama of Roman times.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am Impressed.
I got this book for my 10 year old son for his study of Ancient Rome. What a wonderful book.It has the depth of an adult book, yet is written at a young person's level. The Latin and Greek roots and primary source quotes are an added bonus. ... Read more

Product Description

What People Wore When combines the studies of two classic nineteenth-century illustrators Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth for the first time. Their works are presented first by chronology and then by subject, so that illustrators, historians, and students alike can choose to follow the path of fashion through the centuries, or study in detail the contrasting styles of individual clothing and accessories. Silhouettes reveal the shape of style through the ages, detailed cross-references draw attention to recurring motifs, and navigation bars help the researcher to travel the complex chronology of costume.

With authoritative narrative from leading experts in the history of costume, extraordinary contemporary quotes that reveal the impact of style in its day, detailed annotation, and an extensive glossary, the book provides a magnificent study of the rich vocabulary of style through the ages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed?
I am a costume student and I adore this book. However my professor said that is simply the authors renderings of historic costumes. So if you are looking for secondary research it is helpful. But do not use it for primary research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better then most
I have purchased this book with other publications covering the same topic. Among them this is the best, providing good illustrations, some in great colors and specifics. I can still think of improvements, but I guess this is not a very popular subject and not many collective sources exist, specially in English. I would hope the publication will get an upgrade in the near future to include further discoveries in recent times about what and how people wore in the past centuries and where. There is a great lack of material covering the VII - XI. Centuries in Europe and Asia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book has pictures and descriptions of costume from Anatolia to South America - it's really worldwide. Unfortunately, the major focus is on Europe, since it's based on two classical european illustrators. But it's a good choice for those who want to have an idea of different and non-european's costume through the ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunningly useful book on costume and dress
This is the best one-volume illustrated history of costume and dress I've ever seen.An invaluable resource for writers, historians, actors, directors, and anyone trying to get a sense of what people wore when.Beautifully produced and incredibly useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars great ref book

5-0 out of 5 stars A deftly researched, scholarly look into the diet of Ancient Israel
Diets throughout history can tell a bit about the people who ate them. "What Did the Ancient Israelites Eat?" is a deftly researched, scholarly look into the diet of Ancient Israel. Looking into anthropological evidence, "What Did the Ancient Israelites Eat?" examines the base ingredients, how they were combined, and how these foods affected the ancient Israelites as a people. Criticizing diet books that call for a return to a biblical diet, "What Did the Ancient Israelites Eat?" is a realistic look at a diet in a time where survival was much harder.

Pangu, a god asleep inside a giant black egg for 18,000 years, wakes up to create the world. Liu Bang, the founder of a Chinese dynasty, begins his life as a peasant. Sun Tzu, a fearless war strategist, writes one of the most popular books of all time. These are just a few of the captivating figures you'll meet in The Ancient Chinese World. Terry Kleeman and Tracy Barrett use a rich variety of intriguing primary sources-turtle shells, clay pots, an ancient wall, folk songs, poetry, and more-to construct a lively history of the politicians, farmers, warriors, and philosophers who created and shaped the ancient Chinese world. They also show us the fascinating process of constructing the historical jigsaw puzzle. Archaeologists discover a 400,000-year-old skull near modern-day Beijing and determine that it is one of our earliest human ancestors. A scholar who is prescribed "dragon bones" to cure an illness realizes that the bones-which are actually turtle shells-contain ancient Chinese writing used to send messages to the gods. The fantastic discovery of Lady Hao's tomb reveals that in ancient China a powerful woman led soldiers into battle. The letters exchanged by two military leaders show not only how the Chinese invented the sword, but also how they used the kite as a military weapon. Using these ancient artifacts and writings, Kleeman and Barrett weave the dramatic story of rulers, writers, soldiers, and citizens who made up the fascinating and unique world of ancient China. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Deeply, deeply disappointed
This book represents the nadir of world history: wide-ranging, superficially impressive, and totally devoid of real scholarship. "Documents in World History" seemed like an excellent resource for a world history course. However, it is written by people who are obviously unqualified.

For a good compendium of primary documents for a world history course, I would recommend "World History" by Howard Spodek (the accompanying supplements, listed on the publisher's website, are promising as well).

The first things which surprised me was the poor production quality of this book. For the ridiculous price, one would expect at least a few color photos. But beautiful artwork is rendered in stale, pixellated black and white. I imagine this book was published more for the sake of profit than scholarship.

The authors of "Documents in World History" fail utterly to show which documents are important, and which are just curiosities. The entry for Cyrus the Great fails to show this king's mythical status in Iran and even in Greece, which idolized Cyrus despite his attempts (and those of his descendants) to conquer Greece.

The sections on China are pathetic. The authors do not have any understanding of Confucianism or Chinese literature.

The greatest writer in the Chinese language, Su Shi, has only one poem in this collection. Yet that gives the authors an opportunity to display their total ignorance of China, its language, and even the fact that Chinese people have a surname and a given name. Su Shi has his name misspelled as "Sushi". Another important writer, Bai Juyi, has his name morphed into Bo Zhuyi, which can be quite confusing because "Ju" and "Zhu" are totally different in Chinese. This may seem like nitpicking, but imagine if the authors had misspelled the names of Shakespeare AND Dickens because they couldn't tell the difference between the letters "z" and "k". ... Product Description
Ever since the earliest travelers took to the water on reed rafts or inflated goatskins, ships and boats have played a paramount role in the history of the Western world. The invention of the sail about 3500 BC resulted in ever faster and more efficient water transport, and the great civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome depended on ships and seafarers for their prosperity. This entertaining book by the world's foremost authority on ancient seamanship traces the development of the boat from the most primitive craft to the powerful warships of the Greeks, the huge Roman merchant vessels, and the slender galleys of the Vikings. Professor Casson shows how the discoveries of marine archaeologists and recent experiments with full-size replicas of ancient boats have increased our knowledge of the way in which ships were built and used. Drawing upon written accounts and contemporary artistic depictions of naval battles, trading expeditions, and other voyages, he brings the world of seafaring in ancient times vividly to life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book has a greater gift to give
I read this along with Mr. Casson's "The Ancient Mariners"; it was an excellent accompaniment to that volume, which is lacking the abundant illustrations that are included in this book. Along with providing a complete, unbroken (as we know it) timeline of the evolution of shipping and development of ancient men-of-war such as the Trireme, Quinquereme, sixes, sevens, etc. the greater gift of this book as I see it is it will teach people how to look at the art. With every single example in this book are numerous references to fine detail that the artists included which are picked out and described by Mr. Casson. One of the first things I learned in Art History was that the living conditions contemporary to a society are ALWAYS reflected in the art, which is why there are so many sculptures and mosaics referenced here. Another unexpected thrill from this book was the absolutely fabulous color plates included, depicting among other things some of the finest photography I have ever seen of the Greek red figure/black figure vases. All the photos, with very few exceptions, are top notch. Absolutely one of the most enjoyable books I have found in quite some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating information
In this captivating account of travel by sea, the author provides the origins of the boat, the vessel, the trireme and the supergalley. He writes about the importance of this means of communication and travel in the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Widely illustrated in black and white, the book includes a short bibliography albeit with very useful titles. Recommended for its wealth of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really fun history book with lots of cool pictures.
I checked out this book from the library, and am enjoying it so much that I'm buying a copy.If you love practical, how-it-was-done histories, you'll really like this book. The chapter on triremes is my favorite sofar, partly because of the description of these amazing ships, and partlybecause of the accounts of deeply stupid naval blunders on the part of thegreeks.Best of all, there are tons of pictures, including reconstructionsof several ancient ships. Neat book!Buy it!

Archimedes was one of the greatest mathematicians and inventors of the ancient world. His native city was Syracuse on the island of Sicily. When he was a young man, Archimedes was sent to study in Alexandria. There he met other brilliant mathematicians who became his friends. Even after they parted, they wrote to each other sending the problems and theorems they were working on. Product Description
Taking readers back 4,000 years, to the fertile land around the Nile River, The Ancient Egyptian World tells the stories of the kings, queens, pharaohs, gods, tomb builders, and ordinary citizens who lived there. Using papyri, scarabs, tomb inscriptions, mummies, and a rich variety of other primary sources, Eric H. Cline and Jill Rubalcaba uncover the fascinating history of ancient Egypt. Scarabs, which scholars call "imperial news bulletins," record important moments in a pharaoh's reign. The Edwin Smith Papyrus details the injuries sustained by the builders of the great pyramids, and the remedies used to treat them. For a worker who has had a stone fall on his head, it suggests: "bind it with fresh meat . . . and treat afterward with grease, honey and lint." A complex recipe for a top-of-the-line mummy describes a process that could take 70 days and involved drawing the brain out through the nose with a crooked piece of iron. These primary sources also tell the stories of the people of ancient Egypt: Pepi II, the six-year-old boy king who commanded armies; Ramesses II, whose mortuary temple boasts of his expertise in battle against the Hittites; Queen Hatshepsut, the only woman to rule Egypt as pharaoh; and Cleopatra, who courted Roman statesman Mark Antony as part of her quest to extend the Egyptian empire. The Ancient Egyptian World honors the history of a civilization whose monuments and tombs still capture the imagination of the world thousands of years later. ... Read more

I'm not an expert on this subject but the writing has the ring of truth and seems to be well-researched.

The authors have a gift for making old topics seem this-minute relevant.
For instance, Egyptian priesthood: "Plucking out your eyebrows and eyelashes may sound painful., but being a priest had advantages. For one thing, you didn't have to pay taxes..." Or, on fashion: "So what would an Egyptian Fashion magazine look like (other than the fact it would be written on papyrus, need only one issue every thousand years or so, and could only be read by a few people since only aobut 1 percent of Egyptians could read?)"

I think the ho-hum title and amazingly dull cover are like displaying a perfect rose in a milk bottle, but you can't have everything.
