4-0 out of 5 stars Anemia
Have not read book in it's entirety, but found just the excerpt was insightful. The book gives examples/case studies which provide some of the possible side-effects of anemia not offered in other books/sources, including physicians. Example: hair loss/thinning; brittle nails; odd cravings for ice and other things. Quite pleased so far, although sometimes a bit wordy with case studies. However, if you wish to learn/study more about the condition, again, this is a very candid, plain-written informative source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anemia is serious, a must read for every woman.
Every woman should have this book in her library. If you are tired and feel like you are pushing yourself to get through the day this book can literally be a life saver. Read this and be tested before you need to have a transfusion!!! Low iron levels are not just a small problem. This is especially vital to all vegetarians and those who avoid red meat. Dr. Gomez has written a terrific book full of helpful information for the entire family. She covers anemia in all it's various forms, anemia in children, teens and adults. Anemia is sometimes mistaken for senile dementia in the elderly. Left untreated it can lead to infertility, fainting and mental confusion in women of any age. In a busy life it isn't always easy to stay on top of all we need to and this is one issue that you do not want to let slip by untreated. Live long and prosper!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

Each year thousands are told they suffer from anemia, but most have only a vague understanding of the condition. In fact, "anemia" is a generic term that includes myriad specific diseases, each of which has its own story regarding cause, manifestations, and treatments.

Understanding Anemia gently builds upon elementary knowledge of biology to provide the general reader with a fairly sophisticated understanding of the various causes of anemia, of the methods used to make diagnoses, and of the principles of treatment. The book begins with a definition of anemia and a brief history of the scientific study of blood. It explains how the doctor makes the diagnosis and details the main types of anemia. Since the different conditions result from the failure of various organs, the reader will come away with a surprisingly broad understanding of human anatomy and physiology, encompassing the digestive, circulatory, and immune systems, nutrition, biochemistry, and heredity.

Features:

  • Specific anemias: iron deficiency, vitamin deficiencies, hemolytic anemias, hereditary anemias, and others

  • Helpful appendices: a practical guide to the metric system, a brief review of general cell biology, a table of normal values in commonly ordered lab tests, a description of the bone marrow biopsy procedure, a list of pitfalls a doctor faces during the evaluation of the anemic patient, resources for further study (both in print and on the Internet)

Ed Uthman is director of the medical laboratory at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Texas. He is an adjunct assistant professor of pathology at the University of Texas School of Medicine, Houston.

Product Description

Although it strikes individuals from a variety of backgrounds, sickle cell anemia has always been known as a "black" disease in America. In the Blood argues that ever since the discovery in 1910 and subsequent scientific analysis of the disease, sickle cell anemia has been manipulated to serve social ends-as a tool for securing white identity and a way to establish a hierarchy based on European heritage. Tapper shows how sickle cell anemia was used to promote the superiority of racial purity, to characterize the black body as contaminated, and even to support the notion that modern humans evolved from multiple origins.

Product Description
This groundbreaking book chronicles the history of sickle cell anemia in the United States, tracing its transformation from an "invisible" malady to a powerful, yet contested, cultural symbol of African American pain and suffering.

Set in Memphis, home of one of the nation's first sickle cell clinics, Dying in the City of the Blues reveals how the recognition, treatment, social understanding, and symbolism of the disease evolved in the twentieth century, shaped by the politics of race, region, health care, and biomedicine. Using medical journals, patients' accounts, black newspapers, blues lyrics, and many other sources, Keith Wailoo follows the disease and its sufferers from the early days of obscurity before sickle cell's "discovery" by Western medicine; through its rise to clinical, scientific, and social prominence in the 1950s; to its politicization in the 1970s and 1980s. Looking forward, he considers the consequences of managed care on the politics of disease in the twenty-first century.

A rich and multilayered narrative, Dying in the City of the Blues offers valuable new insight into the African American experience, the impact of race relations and ideologies on health care, and the politics of science, medicine, and disease. ... Read more

Product Description

Sickle-cell disease is a unique inherited and incurable condition of the blood cells which, according to doctors, has similarities with virtually all disease conditions known to mankind, includingAIDS and cancer.Commonly affecting Africans and those with an African ancestry, the disease is also prevalent among Arabs, Turks, Greeks, Italians (chiefly Sicilians), Iranians and Indians. As a result of migration and other factors, the disease is rampant the world over. From England to the United States and Canada, from Brazil to the Caribbean, children are still being born with the disease and its trait.Medical science is able to offer little more than palliation, and even in countries with the most advanced medicare, the average life expectancy for sicklers is low-42 years for males and 48 for females. With a population in excess of 150 million, of which one in four are carriers of the sickle cell trait, Nigeria hosts the largest population of sicklers in the world - over 6 million at the last estimate.

Suffering from a severe form of the disease, the type which, especially in sub-Saharan Africa makes survival to adulthood a rarity, the author writes about his childhood, the pains of growing up with a major health impairment. He also talks about his early cigarette and alcohol abuse and of being sexually molested at the age of 7.

In this first of a series, the author touches on the social and political milieu into which he was born and weaves into his story the life experiences of significant others in his web of relationship.

This book will be a source of encouragement to all whom the medical profession gives little prospects, whether of healing or survival

REVIEWER'S COMMENT:

"This is a personal account of aman's struggle through the threatening spasms of life. The novel offers a great deal of information about the sickle-cell disease, the Yoruba, their anthropology, religion, and family systems. It is a definite statement about African culture and belief patterns. The crafting of the story is rich and captivating."

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life!
I highly recommend this book to any woman who has this problem. It is the best book on the subject!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent basic primer
This is an excellent basic primer on the causes of heavy menstrual bleeding and advice for dealing with it. Heavy bleeding can result in anemia, a condition also covered quite adequately. This information is presented in a workbook style, where the reader is first given some education on the subject, then guided to recognize and evaluate her own symptoms using worksheets. What follows is a wealth of advice concerning nutrition, diet, exercise, alternative therapies, drug therapy, and surgical intervention. Since the book covers all heavy menstrual bleeding, no one cause is examined in depth - for specific causes such as fibroid tumors or endometriosis, other sources of information would probably be needed. This book's great strength is its advice on diet, including sample menus and recipes, and its 18 pages of suggested exercise - a simple stretching routine, including several yoga positions. If mild anemia due to excessive menstrual bleeding is your problem, this book is an excellent starting place to inform yourself about what's going on with your body and what you can do to help yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Christian Romance - oh so dreamy
I can't say enough positive things about this wonderful Christian Romance Book Series. Oh, my, they have captured my heart and I could not wait to get my hands on the second book, One More Moment in Time. And thank God she had her third book out, Forever in His Heart. These books must be made into a Halmark movie!!!! I am a fan for life. Bless someone and give them these books. Word of advice - don't plan on cleaning or cooking or working until you have finished these books because once you start reading - you won't stop!

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless Love
Elizabeth Ryan has written such a wonderful book on how determination and prayer can get a person through many struggles in life.
The glamour of football and all that it entails for the players and fans just brings the story so much to life.I have read the first two books in the series and am waiting for the next book in the mail from Elizabeth. This one will be signed.
I hope to see more from her in the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly predictable
I bought four Christian romance novels by four different authors to add to our collection of favorite reading fare. This one was the weakest. The main character is so unbelievably perfect (good looking, rich, great academically, great footballer, great bike rider, great voice, self-sacrificial personality, etc.) that it was hard to have any sympathy for him. The plot was sadly predictable, and there were too many one-dimensional characters - I eventually struggled to keep track of all the names. I would have loved to see fewer, better developed characters, with both good and bad sides. With few exceptions, the good people were perfect and the bad ones had no redeeming features. I could have handled these problems had it not been for the editing. The author was badly let down by the editors. While any author could write words like warmness, humbleness or insaneness, surely the editors should point out that warmth, humility and insanity are common usage? Or that one should rather not have eight sentences in a row that all start with the word "Mark"? Or that, in the case of adjectives, less is more? Or fix a sentence such as "...[his] ability to bring joy to all those he came in contact." Yes, I will remember this story, but sadly not for its spiritual food as much as for the frustration that such a promising author did not receive better support.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWSOME!!!!!! book
