Product Description
This book has been expertly written and illustrated for patients with brain aneurysms and their families and for physicians and paramedical professionals interested in learning more about this field. The book contains detailed information about the investigation and screening of brain aneurysms and critical chapters related to their treatment. A comprehensive section on coma caused by ruptured brain aneurysms discusses the difficult choices facing both families and physicians during the management of critically ill aneurysm and brain hemorrhage patients. The book explains the process of informed consent for the investigation and treatment of brain aneurysms and the rationale for the choices given and decisions made. The risks and benefits of various procedures encountered by brain aneurysm patients and how the procedures are performed are described in detail. Responses to frequently asked questions regarding "clipping versus coiling" aneurysms are provided, as are step-by-step details of the relevant open surgical and endovascular procedures. An in-depth chapter devoted to rehabilitation and recovery after treatment presents information on what patients can expect and need to be aware of during this process. Chapters also cover treatment-related complications, wound issues, follow-up after coiling or clipping, and recurrent or persistent brain aneurysms after treatment. Finally, detailed "case histories" of persons with unruptured and ruptured brain aneurysms personalize the experience of having an aneurysm. Being diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and undergoing treatment are some of the most significant events patients and their families are likely to experience. This practical book is a must-read for such persons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Survivor's Opinion
Upon returning home from the hospital after suffering a ruptured aneurysm (SAH) in 2007, I was naturally curious how I survived a medical event that causes death or at least irreversible medical challenges for so many people.I read this book within the first couple of months during convalescence. This book helped me understand the hundreds of questions I had about what caused my aneurysm, what actually happened in my brain arteries to cause the rupture, what medical procedures work most successfully for the different types of aneurysms, what complications to expect, and why the drugs I had to take were so important. Now, knowing that cigarette smoke can cause SAHs, I will never, ever smoke again. It is very hard to find information on the internet and in the bookstore on the SAH topic, so I was sincerely relieved to have found this book to help me through this trying time.My husband read it before I read it, and our reading it has helped us communicate with all the various doctors and medical staff therefore expediting the healing process. This book is very easy to read, engaging, and understandable. The authors did a wonderful job and should be commended for their ability to make something as complicated as brain surgery so simple for others to absorb.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful to patients and their loved ones
After researching information on brain aneurysms for months on the internet, I discovered the author, Vini Khurana, M.D., and his passion for this terrifying subject. Dr. Khurana combines medical information that is accurate and up-to-date with the presentation of case studies in a compassionate manner. Written with simple language and clear definitions, the book is the perfect blend of technical and humanistic information that makes it a must read for both patients and everyone close to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative

Product Description
When Eve suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm, Madonna Siles, her housemate and friend, too quickly found herself making critical short- and long-term medical care decisions without any help. When the insurance and financial resources ran out and the conventional therapy providers discharged zombie-like Eve to the homecare of a solitary caregiver, both their futures seemed hopeless.

Instead of giving up, Siles drew on life experience and her marketing career to develop a rehabilitation program that harnessed the power of the subconscious mind. Using motivational techniques borrowed from the advertising world, she appealed to EveÂ’s subconscious to bypass the brain damage and restore normal functioning. In three short years, even the doctors were amazed at EveÂ’s recovery and return to a near-normal life.

Part memoir, part recovery manual, Brain, Heal Thyself is a guidebook for thousands of shell-shocked individuals who suddenly find themselves having to make life and death decisions for those they love. With humor, warmth, and arresting honesty, Siles’s lively narrative closely examines not only the patient’s recovery, but also the crucial role of caregivers—and the emotional, financial, and practical pressures they face. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book on Dealing With Stokes, etc
Every stroke, aneurysm, traumatic brain injury is different which is one reason it is so tough to deal with recovery, especially with the "at home stage".My husband suffered a massive stroke with evolved to a crainectomy so I have gone thru years of being a caretaker.

what I loved this book is that so many of the suthor's situations and emotions were so "spot on".From being totally overwhelmed in the beginning that one is primarily reacting vs being pro active in dealing with the days after "the event", to learning how to take one day at a time or celebrating one small improvement, to evolving/figuring out a home treatment plan. The hard parts are coming up with ideas for home rehab because the survivor and caretaker are left on their own, and most important, for the caretaker not to get lost in the process.

It was well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely more than 5 stars
First off, I'm a caregiver to a stroke patient - my husband, who is 40, and is suffered from 2 massive strokes end of last year and still hospitalized.

The book basically is a testimony of how the author has helped her best friend to get back on her feet from the stroke.

This book is not only an enjoyable read(the author is extremely funny, sometimes, a laugh can help a lot in situation like this), but also offers many constructive ideas of how a caregiver can survive through this life's brutal episode. Yes, a caregiver needs to be well alive first, then to "give care". Because her/his well-being is all it counts when their loved one is struck from a brain trauma. And this book has taught us how.

After reading the book twice, I was really moved by their friendship described in the book. The author has done her best to bring her dear friend back to normal; If she can do that to her friend, there's no reason that I cannot do the same to my husband, and this thought has helped me survived till now.

Back to my husband, after 2 massive strokes and craniotomies and lying in the ICU for 2 weeks,he now can read the newspaper daily and feed himself with fork. Still can't he be able to talk yet, but we're so sure that my strong, funny and loving husband will come back soon.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a confidence boost when taking care to a brain trauma patient, or simply wants an enjoyable read.

God bless.

Fannie

4-0 out of 5 stars Warm and well described
This is a good book about the before, during and after of a drama like brain injuries. The author explains how lonely is the care-taker and how overwhelming is the task. I am in a similare situation as my husband had a stroke at the young age of 46 and I found support and understanding through the pages of this book.
All the aspects are approached like the difficulties, the fears, the financial aspects etc.... a well as the hope, the happiness related to each achievement, the ups and downs and the faith into a future, different from the past but still worth fighting for life.
A must read

3-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting read, but very general
This was an enjoyable book to read (considering the topic), but it didn't offer much in the way of specifics for care giving or rehabilitation.Much of the book is dedicated to telling the author's story, and it also heavily references the 12 step program.Although I didn't get the specifics I was looking for, I did get a few ideas for additional research, such as eye exercises for regaining balance.Additionally, the book did provide me with a sense of hopeful optimism about my care giving situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seven Stars!
I do not remember the excrutiating pain I was apparently in when I had my brain aneurysm. Nor do I recall my months of recovery in hospitals and the nursing home. But I am very grateful that my friend and caregiver never gave up on using her emotion-based approach to brain rehab. I typed the manuscript for Brain, Heal Thyself. I also proofread it. I believe all caregivers and stroke patients (who can read) SHOULD read Brain, Heal Thyself. This caregiving method saved my life. I give this book seven stars!

Product Description
An increase in incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysm is predicted as an extension of the advancing age of our population. Novel strategies for treatment and prevention need to be considered. Interdisciplinary approaches to this disease will aid in prevention and treatment. This volume will integrate new insights into the etiology and pathology of aneurismal disease, including physiologic and genetic causes.

Several educational objectives have been met in this volume. The contributors assess the benefits of risk of rupture assessment at different ages and thresholds of abdominal aortic aneurysm in the context of epidemiologic studies, examine the use of animal models in the study of abdominal aortic aneurysm and its underlying pathobiology, and integrate data on susceptibility and genetic causes of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The increase in abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is viewed from the perspective of epidemiology, and initiatives to prevent death from rupture are discussed. Animal models and their relevance to pathophysiology and prevention are also presented, and the interventional pharmacology is also considered from the perspective of enzymology.

In addition, chapters covering the biological aspects of the endovascular devices used to repair abdominal aortic aneurysm and the molecular biology and immunology in abdominal aortic aneurysm are included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and motivational
Although I myself or anyone I know has suffered a brain aneurysm, I read this book and found it to be a wonderful commentary on how important our attitude is in overcoming the challenges of life.Lori beat the odds and fought her way back to live a fulfilling and giving life.I can't help but think that the way she overcame the challenges her aneurysm presented to her can be an inspiration to many of us who have gone through life-altering events.Kudos to Lori for writing such a warm and personal account of her experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Inspiration and Information
My best friend is currently recovering from a ruptured brain aneurysm, so I have complete sympathy for what the author went through and I regret if my review seems disrespectful. That said, this mini-book offered little useful insight that I hoped to gain. At roughly a mere 40 pages (excluding messages from the friends and relatives of the author and the end of book), the text offers none of the insight I hoped to gain. Moreover, I can't say I felt completely sympathetic with the author upon completing the book. Having left her husband who had been by her side during the ordeal, I felt more sympathy for him than I did the author when all was said and done. Sure, there may be more to that story to explain the divorce. If there was, however, it's one of many key holes in the book.

The text offers nothing useful for a friend hoping to learn how to work with a victim of this type of brain injury. Instead, I would recommend reading "Brain, Heal Thyself". I appreciate that writing this book may have been a cathartic experience for the author. For that alone, I'm sure it was a worthwhile exercise. Unfortunately, aside from whatever portion of the purchase price was donated to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, I thought this book was a waste of my time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars From certain death to successful businesswoman
Lori's story is nothing short of a miracle. As Lori's brother, I watched her climb back from less than a ten-percent chance to live to become a successful businesswoman and inspiration to many.Lori approaches each new challenge in life with an "I can do it" attitude and is not afraid to take on something which most others would avoid.Lori is a shining example of using a significant life event for the betterment of herself and those she touches.

She is an amazing woman with an amazing story that you have to read.

Advances in endovascular therapy have allowed interventional radiologists to contribute to the management of visceral arterial aneurysms for not only elective interventions but also for urgent procedures in patients presenting visceral arterial aneurysm rupture. The authors describe and illustrate both imaging diagnosis and endovascular therapy of visceral arterial aneurysm based on their experiences. Transcatheter coil embolisation can provide an alternative method of treatment for both ruptured and non-ruptured visceral arterial aneurysms excluding dissecting lesion that is treated by stent-graft. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is exactly what I was hoping for when I purchased the DVD. It makes for auseful companion to text. The cases have been put together very well and most of the photography/videography demonstrate technique superbly. Ofcourse, one has to realize the senior authors' extensive experience makes the procedure look deceptively simple and something that could be done at breakneck speed! There are also some interesting demonstrations of technique, which it is safe to say, are not prevalent in mainstream practice e.g., obliterating the aneurysm by bipolar coagulation, in addition to clipping.
Perhaps this DVD would have been even stronger if Prof. Yasargil had provided the commentary himself. Most of those who would be viewing such aDVD arefamiliar with his voice and would have had no problem understanding him. If the choice of commentator was based on time limitations for each case, perhaps that problem could have been overcome by using a script. There were a few segments in the DVD where there was silence. If Prof. Yasargil had been doing the commentary, he could have easily filled those pauses with useful observations.
At times the commentary did appear dated (e.g., mention of using a Gigli saw during craniotomy), but the demonstrations themselves were priceless. In the craniotomy demonstration, the fat pad and how to deal with it has been depicted very well. The 'before' and 'after' illustrations are also great.
While this DVD to an extent fills a void, I hope Prof. Yasargil will follow it with more. It would be fantastic, if similar DVD's also came forth from other masters. Several years ago Prof. Hernesneimi graciously presented attendees of a microvascular course with a superb DVD demonstrating his techniques. That andsimilar DVDs,should be made available more extensively. ... Read more
