5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
This isa wonderful book with lots of loving ways to interact with your animals.I purchased extra copies as gifts for some friends with ailing pets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Exciting to read!
I so enjoyed this book! It is well written and once you start reading it you get jazzed and don't want to quit reading it or put it down. Keep an open mind when reading it. :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas but totally inadequate instruction
As a sales pitch for Tellington Touch, this book is great. As an instruction manual, it is totally worthless. Complex gestures such as those mentioned in the book need illustrations that take one step-by-step through the manipulation process. There aren't any, just a few photos that show one stop action part of the whole.

It did get me to take a T-Touch workshop, which was beneficial for my old and arthritic dog. The process works. The book doesn't.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great method for working with animals
I have applied the methods in this book to various cats at a homeless cat shelter. It is a lot offun and the cats really like it too.The book has many fascinating stories of how Tellingtondeveloped her methods andhow she has appliedthem to an incredible range of animal species.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is a must if you really love your pets,
This books content is out of this world, taking you further than any book i have ever read. I could not put it down from start to end. One of the questions i often ask myself is does my dog really know just how much i love him. After reading lindas book and trying the ttouch i got my answer. Yes he does and the feeling is returned ten fold. Thankyou linda ... Read more

Product Description
Imagine how easy dog training would be if your dog could tell you exactly how to get the results you want. In ROVER, DON’T ROLL OVER, professional dog trainer and behavioral therapist Jody Rosengarten taps into our four-legged friends’ perspective to present new, more realistic approaches to dog training. Does your dog insist on sleeping on your bed? It’s okay—let him! Does your pup want to eat "people food"? Don’t worry—go ahead! You don’t have to practice training with your dog (at least not in any obvious way) and the words you choose to use during training don’t matter—really! This pro-dog, anti-dogmatic manual rejects the rigidity of traditional obedience classes in lieu of kinder, gentler practices that encourage your dog’s natural joie de vivre. Written for thinking dog lovers who want to better understand what makes their companions tick, ROVER, DON’T ROLL OVER is for busy owners who want a well-behaved dog, but don’t want to spend a lot of free time getting there. Spoil your dog but teach her to listen too; this alternative guide offers proven yet flexible training methods that honor human and canine alike. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
I bought this book after hiring a trainer that had a bit of a "rough" approach. The author's approach is all about positive reinforcement so it was a great perspective to get. While we are still struggling with our 14 week old Tibetan Terrier, we have used many of the training guidelines outlined in the book.If you too have a puppy, good luck...you will need it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rover, Don't Roll Over: A Compassionate Training Guide for Dogs and Their People
This book is fabulous! While being extremely helpful in teaching you how to have a great realtionship with your dog, it is also almost like reading a novel!?It is entertaining, engaging and the advice really works!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A realistic guide to dog ownership
Too many people seeing the ideal dog on TV or movies, or maybe a super bright one who does lovely tricks, want their dog to be the `perfect dog'. You know, the dog that *never* digs, that *never* jumps up to lick a child, the dog who would never dream of barking, and maybe even rescue 500 kids from a burning building etc. Honestly, for most dogs of average trainability and intelligence, and most realistic owners who want a well behaved companion, not a human substitute that will thrill friends, this book is the book. You will end up with a mannerly, pleasant to live with dog, and you won't have to spend ages doing it. The approach is sensible, realistic and very simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book works!
Since getting my 6 week old puppy I have become so interested in dog behavior and training and started reading tons of books. When trying to apply various training techniques I realized many did not work, in fact some lead to my puppy regressing. Any type of physical correction no matter how gentle just did not work. I started realizing that when teaching anything, they have to learn how to do it on their own without any force. We are there just as positive motivators. Thats what this book is able to teach. How to motivate your puppy to do commands, have manors, and follow directions by encouragement and positive rewards. I like that she uses food rewards and toys as rewards, but in moderation. This is a great book and I could tell right away the author understood what so many people do wrong and what we can do right. If you are searching for books to help you raise your puppy, small breed dog, and even larger breed dog I sincerely encourage you to buy this book, it is well worth the money and I only wish the book was even bigger!! I am now teaching my puppy to "drop it" on command, you know how puppies like to put everything in their mouths=). With the technique in this book my puppy has learned it in one day and she didn't even know we were training. When we play with her toys and she is in the middle of chewing it in her mouth, I say "Goober Drop it" and show her a nice treat. She drops the toy right away and I give her the treat. Then I start saying "goober drop it" without showing her ther treat and after she drops it I give her the treat. After a while you can sometimes give her a treat. This is great for puppies to learn and you will learn how to teach this and so much more in a way that is positive and motivational!! This is the first book out of many I read and bought that I highly recomend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Canine common sense
On the subject of raising your voice to your dog, Jody Rosengarten advises, "He can hear a Frito fall at 250 yards. There's no need to yell."When I picked myself up off the floor and did some deep breathing to relieve my belly-laughing- induced tummy-ache, I knew I had found the dog book for me.It goes without saying that common sense is so simple as to often be overlooked.Never is the need for common sense made more glaringly apparent than in this book.If you've never had a dog and are thinking about getting one, read Rosengarten. If you've had dogs for years and think you know all there is to know about their training, read Rosengarten. As a matter of fact, if you think you never want to have a dog, read Rosengarten. She could change your mind and that would be a good thing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clicker training for your horse
Excellent book. Well written and very easy to follow. I would recommend it to anyone who desires a better relationship with their horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great clicker training book!

It's been 2 weeks since I purchased my "Clicker Training for your Horse" book, and my horse and I are having lots of fun with it!The explanations make it easy to understand the steps it takes to get your horse to do tricks, or to help with other training aspects, using the clicker method. We work (or rather play) at it almost every day, for about 10-15 minutes, and I already have him trained to "retrieve" an item for me, or to touch it, to get a reward. It's fun to see his progress, and really makes his mind think.I got this book, after a riding accident has left me unable to ride for a couple of months.I wanted something that would keep my horses brain busy, so he didn't get bored, and this was the perfect solution!

3-0 out of 5 stars Clicker for my Honkers
I've just begun clicker training (hence 3 stars for now) for my baby donkey and so far, so good. I'm going to continue reading the rest of the book and then training all three of my girls. Thanks for making this possible, they can be rather stubborn at time :-D

5-0 out of 5 stars Very effective!
I have read every word in this book, and re-read the directions for using the clicker to reinforce training. It is fascinating, and it works!I was afraid to try it, thinking that conditioned response can be like a razor in a monkey's paw if you don't know what you are doing. But, the author walks you through the process so you can progress as slowly as you want.I tried the initial exercise with my horse, and it was amazing how quickly he caught on!Now I am branching out to real world uses for this process. It is worth reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just for horses- it's for people, too!
If you're thinking of getting your first horse- or if you've already brought it home and are now too intimidated or green to know what to do with it- or maybe you had an accident and have become afraid of horses- this is the #1 most important book you can get to learn how to build your confidence in order to create a relationship of mutual trust and respect.

I remember when I brought home my first horse (I thought she was a monster!) someone recommended this book.Within the first session, we were best friends. Even though I had been giving her treats before, CT put it in a frame of referrence where the horse realizes there's a *formula* for getting treats.(And they figure it out very quickly!)This makes the horse act very eager to please the trainer (you). The more you see your horse acting in predicatble ways, in ways that you ask of it, the more you see your horse taking a positive interest in working with you, you rapidly gain confidence. Within the fist week, I was riding my new horse with total confidence.

You can even accomplish this relatioship building method over the stall door.

To this day, I still use CT- whether I'm starting a young horse or reshaping engrained "bad" or dangerous behaviors of an older horse. There are so many ways CT comes in handy. When a horse gets out of the pasture, all I do is click and it will *always* turn on a dime and come straight to me.If we're riding and there's a garbage can rolling in the road making my horse nervous, all I do it cue her to "touch" (which she knows from experience will result in a click)- she does what I ask, in turn learning the garbage can is no threat, and gets her click and reward. The we can ride on. (Much better than the big snort-fest, trying-to-bolt mess the situation would have been pre-CT!)Your horse doesn't take the bit?CT will very quickly cure that one.Wish your horse would self load on a trailer? In most cases, it would take about one 15 minute CT session to teach a horse to self load. The list goes on.You name the problem, CT can fix it.

Kurland's book is the best one on the subject. You'll be so glad you bought it.

P.S.You don't need to use the little clicker box gadget to do CT.I mimick the clicker box sound with my tongue.I found the clicker tool was never handy when I needed it- so I decided to just skip it and found that clicking with my tongue was just as effective.Just a tip!:0) ... Read more

This little book is a treasure.I enjoyed it so much I have shared stories from it many times.I would like my grandson to read it when he's old enough.I regret to say though, I don't think he will get "it".Appreciation for the world of nature and animals in their natural habitat seems to be a thing of the past, as is taking the time to really observe and learn.
And so...I'm keeping this little gem in my library and perhaps in a few generations someone will pick up great-great grandmother's book and find a world so foreign and beautiful they will be touched. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read but a bit overly technical
The good: The principles in this book are sound, and much of the instruction is common in many other books that I have read on the subject of training a dog to track. The authors are very knowledgable and seem to present the material in a structured and logical fashion. I believe those interested in tracking titles will enjoy this much more than those of us who are intraested in search and rescue.

The bad: If the authors were to write a book on how to drive a car, they would probaby devote the first 4 chapters on how to build a vehicle from the groung up. My point is while the sections about scent theory are mildly interesting, I think they are a bit overblown and unnecessary. A much simpler discussion would have piqued the interest of the reader.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not abook worth consideration
I WOULD NOT recommend this book to serious trainers wanting to learn more about tracking. The main idea is very blurry and hard to grasp. THe author gives theories and not facts and not very good training for tracking dog. The author has confused the ideal of tracking and air scenting. Even though it says "S&R", this book has a poor approach to it. This book was published in 1982, so much has changed since now in tracking. I truly think this author wanted to make a book more than educate people about tracking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very tracking based
I think for the overall comment on this book is " It is VERY tracking based". If you are getting it to help you in search and rescue you won't get what you think you are buying (I don't think). If you are getting it for tracking it will probably be your "bible". I really enjoyed the scent theory in the begining of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best sources of information on canine olfaction.
The first section of this book deals with scent theory and the canine gift of olfaction from a physical and anatomical examination of the dog. This is one of the best references to be found anywhere. The tracking portion ofthe book is a little weaker, but overall an excellent book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best all-around Horse Book
I am an amateur, but I've been breeding and raising western horses for over twenty five years, and a 4H judge for nearly that long. This is a beautiful book. You can tell that love went into it, for the animals, for Robert Miller's students, for the writing itself. It contains a wealth of information, but always presented from the standpoint of *why* - which makes it a fascinating book to read even if you have nothing to do with horses. I'm very happy it's still available.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book!
I have bought several different training books but this is the only one that really explains in detail everything you need to know. I live in Europe and there is no way I'll find a western trainer in my area, so I really needed advice, and this book gives it. Very helpful, from what you need in bits, bridles, saddles, spurs, and why, and how to best select it all for you and your horses. Then light handed horsemanship from the very beginning, from the first the minutes of meeting a colt at birth, all the way to how to teaching him to side step, it is all in there. Excellent!

This book was one of the most uninformal book what i read about dog handling.
It gives a some information(for beginners) but if you have an advantage this
book doesent says so much to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to train your dog to self-stack and gait at the best pace
This book stands by itself -- nowhere else will one find how to train a dog to self-stack without ever putting a hand on him. These are techniques that are known by the great handlers and used in the ring with the great dogs. One doesn't need to use a clicker -- one can "cluck" as if directing a horse to go faster. The book shows you, step by step, how to teach your dog to self-stack with attention, how to gait at the best speed with reach and drive and how to teach a dog to put its ears up, its tail up and its tail down as needed.

The reviewer that stated that no one uses clickers in the ring obviously does not understand clicker training. The clicker (or the click sound) is only used to train the dog; once the dog understands the command, praise can be substituted. How much better than waving bait around or using a squeaky toy to try to get your dog's ears up and his attention!

1-0 out of 5 stars Marginal book at best
The best book I found on showing your dog is "Raising a Champion" by Meredith John and Carole Richards. No one uses a clicker in the ring, so this book is kind of pointless.

3-0 out of 5 stars There are better options
First off let me say that I have a great deal of respect for Karen Pryor.I own her amazing video, Clicker Magic, and have read Don't Shoot the Dog along with many of her articles about animal training.I admire her greatly. She writes with a healthy sense of humor, and her advice is always sound.

However, this book was a great disappointment to me.Although the articles are interesting, the training instruction is very broad.I had hoped for more specific information. If you are just starting out using a clicker to train, your money would be better spent on the above titles from Karen Pryor.I also recommend videos and books by Gary Wilkes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Click To Win: Clicker Training for the Show Ring
I just received the new book by Karen Pryor, Click to Win! It's great! It's about clicker training dogs for the show ring, but everything in there can be applied to horses. It's very concise and gives lists of Tips for Getting Started, Targeting, Getting Rid of Unwanted Behaviors, Shaping, etc. I love the part where she talks about judging and all things being equal, showmanship can win the ribbon. You can teach your dog to take the stack on his own and then give the judge an "adoring" look. Too cool! My favorite part was about breeders who are clicker training their litters from birth. Some breeders offer replacement guarantees for animals that don't work out. The breeders who are CT'ing litters and offering replacement guarantees have had their replacement numbers dropped to zero! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource
If you are a serious student of dog behavior and development, this text and it's companion are resources worth your investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Information!
I'm a dog owner and enthusiast in dog training and behavior. I've read some "lighter" books on the subject, and kept asking for more information. It took me a long time to decide on buying this book, because 1.it's expensive and 2.I thought maybe it would be too rough a reading. I decided to order the 1st volume, and when it got to my house I just couldn't stop reading. There's so much information, and the text never got boring as I thought it could.

So, it is for people who are SERIOUSLY interested in dogs, its origins and behavior. Not for the regular pet owner, but for those owners who MUST know more, and definetly for trainers. There are no tales in the book, only serious information and reviews of many theories on the subject.

I'm very satisfied with the information I'm getting from this book, and pretty sure I'm going to order the other volumes. There are some pictures in this book (only to elucidate issues mentioned in the text), and I thought they could be clearer. That's my only complaint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dogs Learning Process
This book is excellent. I have been training dogs for the last 5 years and I wish I had read this book before. The book provides tons of information about learning process. The book has a lot of topics, and it is noticed that he made a very deep investigation. Something that I really like about the book are all the references that you can consult if you want to make adeeper investigation by yourself. The book is not easy to read, because it has a lot of technical (medical) terms. In some cases I had to look up in medical dictionary some definitions to understand the book. I will read the other 2 books soon.

This is a book that a dog trainer must read. For a dog owner probably it would provide information that could be called nice to know, but it will help you to have a better understanding of your best friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for those who value science-based research!
I'm not a professional trainer, just a lifelong owner of multiple dogs. I also volunteer at a humane society, so I interact with a wide range of dogs on a non-professional level.Material in this book helps provide the foundation for understanding what trainers are doing and why it may work--or not! If you plan to be a professional, this book is a must.

The only downside to this book for some people will be that it is written at the collegiate level. It reminds me of any number of psychology and biology textbooks in college courses--the comprehensive ones that cover the genre from start to end!I end up taking notes while I'm reading, because there is so much there that I want to integrate into my approach. He presents information, shows how it can be applied to practice and proves his points with studies. Actually, sections are eerily applicable to human interaction.I'm a firm believer in using evidenced-based science guide practice, and Lindsay is exacting and detailed. He doesn't preach as much as present research and draw conclusions.

I only regret the generations of wolves and dogs that had to suffer to gain this knowledge.Read it and apply it, because some of the studies done to gain this knowledge could never be ethically replicated again (such as over-reactivity in sensory-stimulus deprived environments).

Contents include:
Origins and Domestication (of dogs)
Development of Behavior (in puppies)
Neurobiology of Behavior and Learning, which includes sections on motivation, fear, aggression, attachment and compulsive behaviors (see how interesting all this is!)
Sensory Abilities--knowing the dog's abilities helps target learning
Biological and Dispositional Constraints in Learning--has interesting sections on genetic strains with breeds and within breeds such as the 'nervous pointers'
Classical Conditioning
Instrumental Learning
Aversive Control of Behavior, including avoidence learning and punishment
Learning and Behavioral Disturbances
Human-Dog Companionship--the signficance of the relationship between people and dogs, and when it breaks down.

Excerpt: Victoria Stilwell (born August 8, 1969 in Wimbledon, England) is widely known as a dog trainer, author, and television presenter. Stilwell served as a judge on the CBS show Greatest American Dog and presents the Animal Planet dog training TV show It's Me or the Dog, counselling families with problem pets and solving their dogs behaviour problems. Stilwell originally trained as an actress, playing roles in Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992, ITV1's The Bill in 1994, and onstage in London's West End theatre, as well as several commercials and voiceovers. In order to supplement her income as an actress, Stilwell's veterinary nurse sister suggested Victoria start a dog walking agency. Within a month Victoria was walking 20 dogs per day - 10 in the morning, 10 in the afternoon - and immediately recognized the need for qualified professionals to help her clients with the training process. She then expanded her focus to dog training by learning from some of Britain's most respected positive-reinforcement dog trainers and behaviorists. After moving to the U.S. with her husband in 1999, Stilwell co-founded several successful dog training companies up and down the East Coast, quickly establishing herself as one of New York's most sought after dog trainers. Victoria has become one of the most well-known dog trainers in the world due to the international reach of her TV show It's Me or the Dog, which is now shown in over 40 different countries. She is a passionate advocate for science-based, positive reinforcement training methods that enhance a dogs ability to learn while increasing confidence, resulting in a heal...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4238111 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff for bigger biceps, tris, and forearms.
Easy to read, provides good direction for how to make your arm muscles significantly bigger and stronger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful instruction for making the arms much bigger
If you want to build your arms up bigger this is a very helpful book on how to do so.It does not focus on all the body but only the arms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for muscular arms
If you want to build more muscular arms this book will really help. The section on brachialis training alone is worth the price. The book also has a good discussion of the importance of the triceps.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book lacks in my areas.
The reason I did not like this book: No photos of how to perform each exercise in various stages. It presented older techniques and older famous bodybuilders. It was only 79 pages and the was not well written at all. Itdid not go in depth on each exercise. This was one of the worst books onbodybuilding I have ever read. ... Read more
