Product Description
This three-volume set brings together a range of documents that allows researchers to explore the nineteenth-century vivisection controversy, its relation to the prominent animal welfare movement and the specific role of women within the movement.
The collection maps the battle over the meaning of animals in Victorian culture, from utility to companionship, showing the range of political, rhetorical and representational strategies that were deployed as physiology and anti-vivisection struggled to assert the 'truth' of animal bodies.
The volumes include press articles by key pro- and anti-vivisectionist activists in the established press, Victorian government materials, scientific papers and illustrations, and the pamphlets and journals of the anti-vivisectionist movements.
Recent collections in this series include Josephine Butler and the Prostitution Campaigns (March 2003, 5 volumes, £495) and Women, Madness and Spiritualism (June 2003, 2 volumes, £250). Forthcoming titles include Women and Cross Dressing 1800-1939 (2005, 3 volumes, c. £325) and Feminism and the Periodical Press 1900-1918 (2005, 3 volumes, c. £325). ... Read more

Product Description

Where there are no alternatives to the use of experimental animals in biomedical research, their welfare has to be ensured as far as possible. The aim of this book is to describe the current knowledge about the welfare of laboratory animals. There is previous literature dealing with the welfare of animals in general, as well as literature dealing with the maintenance and use of laboratory animals. This book brings together these two topics, focusing to the general and species-specific needs of laboratory animals in the light of their welfare. The book will provide material for researchers, lecturers, students and technical staff working with laboratory animals. The authors of this book are leading European scientists in laboratory animal science.

The book has two main parts: part one focuses on the general principles of laboratory animal maintenance and experimental use, as well as factors which have to be taken into account when good research is done with animals. The second part is species specific, concentrating on the species most used as laboratory animals. This part gives a comprehensive description of the welfare questions considered to be important for each species under laboratory conditions.

Product Description
The controversial subject of this book is the permissible use of animals by humans. Lewis Petrinovich argues that humans have a set of cognitive abilities, developing from a suite of emotional attachments, that make them unique among species. Although other animals can think, suffer, and have needs, the interests of members of the human species should outweigh comparable interests of members of other species. Using principles of moral philosophy, biology, evolutionary theory, neurophysiology, medicine, and cognitive science, Petrinovich discusses such topics as fetal and prenatal development, development of the mind and brain, animal liberation, morality and animal research, the eating of animals, keeping animals in zoos and as pets, and the importance of biodiversity."The author brings together a deep, sensitive knowledge of contemporary evolutionary theory and the social sciences, particularly as they interact with human biology. You may not agree with everything that he concludes, but my strong suspicion is that even as you argue with Petrinovich, you will learn and revise your own opinions. Highly recommended!"-- Michael Ruse, Departments of Philosophy and Zoology, University of Guelph"Powerfully argued and very well written. . . . an outstanding contribution to a difficult debate."-- Patrick Bateson, Professor of Ethology, University of Cambridge, and Provost, King's College, Cambridge ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Misappropriating Darwin
The book disappoints. Factually, there are very powerful cases of non-human animal bonding that exceeds even so-called normal human bonding. Secondly, the author neglects to take seriously the 'argument from marginalcases'. So, for example, autistic children, senile and retarded adulthumans and the like, are simply incapable of even the minimal bonding thatthe author believes inhabits 'normal' humans. The result, on parity ofreasoning, is that these marginal humans deserve lesser moral treatment. This seems at odds with our considered moral beliefs; indeed, many of uswould think that these humans deserve extra care and consideration. Thebook is rather philosophically naive and leaves obvious objectionsunaddressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could have been better
Petrinovich does an excellent job of laying out and then applying his particular theory of morality based on the implications of evolutionary biology -- essentially, Petrinovich believes traditional morality isgoverned to a large extent by sociobiological considerations and that inturn we can learn how to apply morality to controversial issues such asanimal rights by examining the evolutionary implications of ouractions.

Much of the book is concerned with the debate over animaltesting for medical research, and this part of the book is outstanding.Petrinovich aptly defends medical experimentation and punctures holes inboth the factual and philosophical claims of animal rights activists, whileat the same time presenting a realistic look at genuine problems anddebates over medical research.

Unfortunately the book is marred by thefinal two chapters, one on meat eating and and other on zoos & pets, which seem tacked on to the book as an afterthought. Neither chapter evencomes close to the level of the rest of the book -- whereas Petrinovich isvery familiar with the literature on medical experimentation, for example, his review of issues in animal agriculture are cursory and rely on ahandful of sources with little attempt at a balanced review.

Still,Petrinovich's book is an important contribution to the debate over howhumans treat animals. ... Read more

Product Description
As the most populous province in Canada, Ontario is a microcosm of theanimal welfare issues which beset Western civilization. The authors of this book, chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, ofthe Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, findthemselves constantly being made aware of the atrocities committed inthe Society's jurisdiction.

They have been, in turn, puzzled, exasperated and horrified at humanity's cruelty to our fellow sentient beings. The issues discussed in this book are the most contentious in animal welfare disputes -- animal experimentation, fur-farming and trapping, theuse of animals for human entertainment and the conditions under whichanimals are raised for human consumption. They are complex issues and should be thought about fairly andseriously.

The authors, standing squarely on the side of the animals, suggest"community" and "belonging" as concepts through which to understandour relationships to other species. They ground their ideas in Wordsworth's "primal sympathy" and Jung's"unconscious identity" with the animal realm. The philosophy developed in this book embraces common sense andcompromise as the surest paths to the goal of animal welfare. It requires respect and consideration for other species whileacknowledging our primary obligations to our fellow humans. ... Product Description

The welfare of the sheep has received less attention than the welfare of intensively husbanded animals. However, domestic sheep may be kept under conditions that are very different from the environment in which wild sheep live, with adverse effects on their behaviour and welfare. This book, written by leading researchers from Europe and Australia, takes a multidisciplinary approach to focus on the specific welfare challenges facing the sheep.

The book begins with a discussion of current welfare thinking and how this might be relevant to sheep husbandry. The adaptations of wild sheep to diverse environments, and how their behaviour and physiology has developed to deal with these conditions is described and compared to conditions in modern sheep husbandry. The varied welfare demands of disease, nutrition and metabolism, farming systems and management practices are then discussed by specialists in those areas. The book concludes by considering the economics of improved welfare, and by describing breeding goals and new challenges and opportunities for good sheep husbandry. This book will be of interest to students and academics in animal welfare, animal production, and veterinary medicine, and those with a particular interest in or concern for sheep.

Product Description

This book describes the welfare implications of keeping wild and domesticated birds in captivity. The environmental and social requirements of various avian species are discussed and suggestions made for appropriate housing and management techniques. Particular attention is paid to human-bird interactions and their impact on the behaviour and welfare of the birds involved. Training methods for companion birds are also described. Possible future trends in keeping birds in captivity are discussed in relation to evolving laws and codes for both wild and domesticated birds and in the light of developing ethical attitudes to animals.

The book will be invaluable to all those who keep birds including poultry farmers, pet owners, and managers and caretakers of birds kept in laboratories, zoos, wildlife aviaries, and rehabilitation centres. It will also be of great interest to poultry production, zoology, wildlife and veterinary students.

Book Description

When disasters strike, people are not the only victims. Hurricane Katrina raised public attention about how disasters affect dogs, cats, and other animals considered members of the human family. In this short but powerful book, noted sociologist Leslie Irvine goes beyond Katrina to examine how disasters like oil spills, fires, and other calamities affect various animal populations—on factory farms, in research facilities, and in the wild.

Filling the Ark argues that humans cause most of the risks faced by animals and urges for better decisions about the treatment of animals in disasters. Furthermore, it makes a broad appeal for the ethical necessity of better planning to keep animals out of jeopardy. Irvine not only offers policy recommendations and practical advice for evacuating animals, she also makes a strong case for rethinking our use of animals, suggesting ways to create more secure conditions.

The hopeful message of Filling the Ark is that once we realize how we make animals vulnerable to disasters we can begin to question and change the practices that put them at risk.  This book will make a significant contribution to the field of animals and society and to the literature on animal welfare.

Product Description
Animal protection activists in the United States have long sought legislation to modify or curtail some practices considered by U.S. agriculture to be acceptable or even necessary to animal health. USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is responsible for enforcing the Animal Welfare Act, which requires minimum standards of care for certain warm-blooded animals bred for commercial sale, used in research, transported commercially, or exhibited to the public. The Human Methods of Slaughter Act governs the humane slaughter and handling of livestock at packing plants. This book examines the violations perpetrated under the Human Methods of Slaughter Act, and the Animal Welfare Act and advises where actions are needed to strengthen enforcement on the humane treatment of animal handling laws. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars just another review
For all people who want to inform themselves about socialism and communism in very abstract way. Personally I prefer to treat an issue in a realistic way, and I think the oppinions and feelings of the situations that Orwell describes would better be understood if he had used human characters.

FINE

3-0 out of 5 stars not too bad
I have had to read this book for the English class and I must say that it is not bad. For me it was not easy to understand and so I was tired to read it. But I think that it was a good choice to read this book in class because you can learn much about the Revolution in Russia but also a lot about tyranny.

5-0 out of 5 stars A duty toward vegetariansm
I expected a more "animal rights" version of why we should all be vegetarians. In fact, this is a very balanced explanation of how we *used to* take better care of our farm animals == they were practicallyunder the same roof as us;there was an unwritten contract between us andthe animals, that if we took care of them, they would "take care ofus."but now that "animal husbandry" has become"animal science" -- and animals are no longer under our roof, this "contract" is no longer a fair contract: there is benefitfor only the human and not the animal.

Bernard Rollin gives both themeat eater and the vegetarian a lot to think about with this book. I highlyrecommend it for all. ... Read more
