4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.
American Cichlids II is one of my favorite cichlid books. The only reason I give it 4 out of 5 stars is because the book is so old. However, it is still a great book with an incredible amount of information on species habitat and species identification.American Cichlids II was one of the first books I ever bought and got me interested in the large cichlids of central and south america.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book with very detailed information.
This book is packed with information on some of the larger cichlids. It contains a lot of information not usually found in other aquarium-books I have read such as data from water samples on different water types.

Every speicie is listed with information on breading, geographical location, author, water tempratures, specific traits, description of natural environment and similar speicies. The Photos are very good.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about American LARGE cichlids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
I bought this book for my 11 year old granddaughter, who was getting a fish tank set-up for her birthday. She really found it useful. It helped her decide what fish she wanted, and gave information to keep her new tropical fish healthy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I rather like this book, and refer to it often. It contains information not covered in most aquarium hobby books. I have been in the aquarium hobby for 15 years. This is one of the books in my library.

Cons: no index, lack of pictures
Pros: great info

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
I really have enjoyed this book.It goes into detail on several points concerning aquarium fish that other books typically leave out.I learned something new every few paragraphs. It does lack a significant amount of pictures, but makes up for it with the amount of information that it includes. It has a what if...? section, on fish health, which is helpful. If you don't enjoy a lot of reading, this book isn't for you, however you may find it helpful, in that it gives you a heads up when information appears later on in the book, so you can skip ahead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fasinating and thorough this is the book your fish want you to read.
I disagree that this book is shallow. I've checked out dozens of books about fish... and bought several. This one had more information on actually taking care of fish than any other book in my public library. All the other books I have found on the subject have only a few first chapters on maintaining your aquaria. The whole rest of them are devoted to what is sometimes called "fish profiles" there is one or at best three pages devoted to a singular species. That may help a little if you haven't bought your fish yet, but you cannot buy every fish profiled. And those few pages will give only a very limited knowlege about whatever fish you decide on. There are entire books devoted to fish profiles called fish atlases which cover many more species of fish, they weigh a ton and are much better for selecting your tank inhabitants than a book that is half-manual, and half-atlas. Tropial Fishlopedia does not presume to be a fish atlas of individual species... In the books introduction pg.#8 at the begining of the second paragraph the authors say "This book deals with just one aspect of fishkeeping - the maintenace of freshwater tropical fish." and between the end of the second and begining of the third paragraphs, Chapter 3 pg.22 "A list of additional reading matter will be found in Appendix A.
We cannot stress too highly, or too often the need to research each species before deciding whether to keep it." It is unfair to complain that this book does not sufficently cover fish species when the authors make it so clear that this is not the aim of the book. It IS the most in-depth book on the MATINENCE of tropical freshwater aquariums that I have ever encountered. It delves into the facinating subject of your fishes behavior and motivation, how to observe your fish's actions and body language and interpret whether it is stressed by illness, tankmates, or simply preparing for mating. It covers water chemistry beyond just the 'nitrogen cycle'. It has taught me more about fishkeeping than all the other aquarium books I've ever read in my life and I'm not even halfway through this book! No, it isn't a stiring novel or an exciting cliff-hanging adventure. But it is a good book. The longer words seem carfully choosen so that the meaning is clearest to it's reader. If you care about your fish and think that the pleasure they give you is worth the effort of learning to keep them healthy... if you find aquariums facinate you and trigger your curiosity... if you just feel that your fishkeeping thumbs are brown instead of green and that you must be content with looking at a friends tank because you are not gifted or lucky enough to keep alive fish of your own... if any of these situations describe you, you may find Tropical Fishlopaedia thoroughly satisfying.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Generic and Shallow
This book is too generic and lacks the most important thing which is practical advice. One can find some useful information how to start a tank but lots of other books and websites can tell you the same things. The authors did not address in deapth the most important aspects the fishes and their diseases. They tried to encompass a wide spectrum of questions but did it in a shallow way. The book does not tell you anything interesting about individual fishes and does not provide practical assistance in identifying and treating diseseas. ... Read more

Originally, only one volume was planned. You, dear reader, have decided otherwise. The comments received were so numerous and so clearly in favor of a second volume that the authors had to grant the readers' wish. The result is present here. This volume turned out more extensive than the first. With over 900 species of fish and over 170 aquatic plants included in this second volume, that is more than an aquarist could ever keep in his life, but interests are very variable and everyone's preference is not equal.Volume 2 of the Aquarium Atlas purposely does not go further into sophisticated and highly specialized hardware but rather into the breadth of the hobby. This allows us to give you more information on additional fishes and plants. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More good stuff!
If you already have Volume I, you know what to expect from this series.Plenty of great pictures and excellent information regarding specific water requirements for all types of fish and plants. This volume seems to cover much larger fish than what an average aquarist might choose to keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars good continuation
If you liked the first book you need to have this one too. Very good continuation to first one. Lots of new fish and plant species and some mistakes done in the first book are corrected in this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A 2nd volume to, IMHO, the best all-round aquaria reference
A large and recommendable guide to fresh and brackish water fishes andplants, in the style and format of volume 1 (to which it often refers forfurther information on related species).

Contents:

- A section onaquatic plants both sub-aquatic and emersed, including 22 pages dedicatedto the flowers of the plants featured (mostly pictures - from the small andhumble to the impressively coloured and shaped). 150 plants are described(according to their count).

- A section on iron and other nutrients:symptoms of deficiencies, fertilisation, CO2 addition and general plantcare and choice guidelines (about 10 pages total, includes some pictures ofsymptoms of common plant problems)

- A section on algae, includingdescription, pictures and control for: blue-green algae (cyanobacteria),diatoms (a.k.a. brown algae), and cluster, beard, green bunch, green spot, black spot, pelt, black brush, filamentous and suspended algae (9 pages, with pictures).

- Some 22 pages on anatomy and physiology of fishes.

-The largest section (almost 2000 pages) describes and contains pictures ofsome 850 species (again, on editor's count). From time to time a picture ofa biotope is included - sometimes with specifications as to the fishyinhabitants, sometimes with miscellaneous comments. The origin of these isquite unbalanced: while South America scores some 17 photos, lake Malawimakes do with 4 (though 2 are underwater ones - the only ones to be so!),lake Tanganyka with just one, Australia with 3 and Asia with 1. The rest gocompletely unrecorded. To make matters worse most of these are landscapepictures giving little information about the actual habitat of the fish orplants. Only in one picture can aquatic plants clearly be seen (apart fromwater lilies, that is) - no specific biotope information is given forplants at all.

All in all this is, I believe, a great reference book onplants and fish. It shows many remarkable plants and fish, many of whichare not even normally commercialised. Great for the terminally curious andthose whose imagination runs ahead of their tanks' possibilities. But not agood source of biotope information (other than short descriptions and hintscontained in the individual species descriptions). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Dedicated Fish Hobbyist- BUT GET THE NEWER EDITION!
I have been an aquarist and aquarium literature collector for nearly 30 years. With all the hacks out there writing fish books, it is refreshing to have one written by, and edited, by real breeders/experts. Granted they are European, and the book is from a German translation, but the layout is handy, and the photos coloful, with textual information on maintenance and breeding (not just a table). I miss the old tetra hardcovers, though. Get the latest editions, too.

This is a book that really helps to spur ones interest further becauase SO MANY species with color photos and information are covered. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT. Period.

There are a handful of books every hobbyist needs. "Baensch Atlas 1-4" are one (some) of them. Hellweg's "Culturing Live Foods" is another, followed by the "Manual of Fish Health."

Makes a great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Aquarium Fish Atlas
I believe this is a must for aquarium enthusiasts. Full of noteworthy information, and yet easy to understand and locate different subspecies of fish. I believe its a MUST!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Expansion to an Excellent Series
The Aquarium Atlas series is one of the best if not the best line of books for fish enthusiasts, especially if you are interested in some of the less common fish.

This book follows the example set by the first volume (what most of the other reviews here are referring to) in providing detailed information in everything from recommended tank setups, breeding information and water/food requirements.

Keep in mind though, many of the fish in this volume are very hard to find in most pet stores, so if you are looking for more common fish - go with volume 1 instead, you won't be disappointed in either way.

5-0 out of 5 stars best aquarium book

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is a very useful book for the beginner or experienced hobbyist. The book not only gives detailed information on a vast amount of fish ( and some plants ) but gives helpful information on all aspects of aquarium care and maintenance. The only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars is the English version has several errors some images of fish say the wrong species entirely and a few pages in the copy i received were not English at all but still German.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Excellent book with great pictures.
Includes several pages of information on fish biology/anatomy and water chemistry as well as information and pictures of plants.
My only complaint is that handling the book is like handling a brick.I wish they would have made it bigger and with a hard cover. The soft cover provided, however, is resilient.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Sure of All The Hype For This Series
This is consistently recommended as the bible for fresh water aquariumists, but to be honest, I'm not sure why.The set-up and tip sections are patchy and sketchy. It is clearly evident that the author's first language is not english. The bulk of the book includes fish descriptions with a lot of irrelevant information, and the overall layout of the book is not user friendly. The technology mentioned is outdated and more focused on European hobbyists. There are some many species that will never be found in even the most elite aquarium stores. It would have been nice to have more in depth information on the 100 most common species instead of a little information on fish that most of us will never own, let alone see.Don't get me wrong, it is not a horrible book.Just really over-rated. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for absolute novices to betta fish care - an inexpensive bare basics start
The coverage for betta specific care is useful, if not super user-friendly. Of all the betta care books, this one is probably the most useful for the novice betta owner.

There is also some information for the intermediate-level owner. Discussions include great definitions on true and mixed colors, types of finnage and layman's discussions on what color and fin traits are dominant.

The disease section is fine, but (like most betta books) relies too heavily on dumping in the medications and antibiotics. It does recommend better prophylactic care - like clean water - and at least recommends trying salt regimes before breaking out the bigger meds. Don't look for any pictures of fish diseases, however - there is just one picture of a female betta with dropsy.

The basic betta care section touches on just that - the bare basics. There is enough information to get started, but not the kind of in-depth pet-owning information I personally would appreciate. I guess that is why this book is in the "Quick and Easy" series.

I would also rather the betta care information be organized better, with bullets and easy-to-find section headings. Maybe this is just being picky.

This is probably the best betta book for beginners, with lots of great photos and a decent amount of care information. It's a very inexpensive book and worth picking up for yourself, or as a thoughtful little betta keeper's gift.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little too basic
Betta Care is a well written book with excellent pictures of "Siamese Fighting Fish."If you have only one source of information at hand, this will serve you well.

Unfortunately, there is another source of information that will serve you well at a much smaller cost - the Internet.Though this book is a handy way to get all the information in one place, you can get the same info (as well as all the good pictures) on many different websites.

My recommendation:If you are the type of person who likes to have the info in black and white in front of them, buy this book.If you're the type of person who spends a lot of time on the web, get the same info for free.

3-0 out of 5 stars Betta Care
The book had a lot more information for breederds than for beginners,
but the information that a beginner could use, was very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's A Life Saver
This book is exactly what it says, Quick and Easy. The chapter on white spot was a real life saver for our betta. We followed the instructions and quess what? It worked.

4-0 out of 5 stars greatbook
