From the author: Art galleries use special media formats to authorize what they display. The Art Gallery of Ontario's 1996 Art for a Nation exhibition exemplifies the use of print-based, modern means of authorization. It presented the Group of Seven as famous artists, constructed an historical narrative of their development and provided expert opinion on their work. The Gallery's accompanying Oh! Canada Workshop used multimedia, postmodern means of authorization. It distributed exhibits randomly without an historical narrative, and allowed visitors to create their own art and to be art critics. A survey of visitors and observations of their activities revealed an overwhelming preference for the Art for a Nation exhibition. Visitors wanted the authoritative media formats that art galleries have traditionally offered, rather than an unauthoritative, multimedia environment that parallels what they experience in everyday life. For them, the museum should remain a place where one can be deferential to authority and anti-popular.

Product Description
An illustrated history of this Hudson River Valley county told from the perspective of the landmarks of its economic and industrial landscape.

Using 134 sites scattered across the county's 18 towns and the city of Hudson, the author weaves an authoritative and well-documented group of narrative histories linking the evidence of the landscape with the underlying economic and social history of each community. Each town narrative is accompanied by individual site descriptions, which can be used as an on-site guide to local history. The author contends that the economic development of a community is its storyline, which can be read, to a greater or lesser degree, in representative surviving structures. These landmarks give concrete form to the abstract concept of the historical past, linking the written record with the present landscape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Work
An outstanding achievement. It's hard to believe the number of industries that have come and gone in the towns and hamlets of Columbia County. And it's great to be able to use Stott's information to locate and see the old industrial and railroad sites!

5-0 out of 5 stars A template for similar studies of other American communities.
In "Looking For Work: Industrial Archeology In Columbia County, New York", industrial historian Peter H. Stott draws upon twenty years of research to trace the economic storyline of Columbia County, a New York State region that is comprised of eighteen towns and the city of Hudson. Now admired principally for its scenic beauty and agricultural character, Stott's focus is with an examination of 134 still-visible industrial buildings and sites. Utilizing historical and geological research in published literature and periodicals, archival deeds, mortgages, business records, insurance documents, and census data, Stott traces the rise and decline of this county's industrialization and mid-twentieth century decline. From early sawmills and knitting mills, to turnpike tollhouses, railroad stations, utility plants, furnaces and kilns, processing plants, and more, "Looking For Work" is comprehensive in its scope and enhanced with filed photographs and 140 other illustrations. An original work of seminal scholarship, "Looking For Work details the emergence and growth of local industry as revealed in surviving sites and structures throughout Columbia County making it highly recommended both as a contribution to Urban Studies, American History, and Industrial Archaeology collections and a template for similar studies of other American communities.

2-0 out of 5 stars INVITATION TO ARCHAEOLOGY by James Deetz
Invitation to Archaeology is a 1967 book by James Deetz, who was an anthropologist and university professor. Here, Deetz briefly discusses the principles and methods of archaeology, and covers excavation, dating, and analysis.

Deetz's information is solid, but Invitation to Archaeology is incredibly dry. It reads like a textbook, and Deetz inundates the reader with terminology and jargon. The book feels more like a survey than an introduction, and any reader without at least a basic working knowledge of archaeology may be quickly lost or bored or both. It doesn't help that there aren't usually enough illustrations to enable the reader to envision the elaborate scenes and diagrams Deetz describes.

If you're already into archaeology, you'll probably want to go with something more in-depth than this 150-page book. If you're looking for something to spark your interest in the subject, Invitation to Archaeology probably isn't going to do it.
