Archery Exercises
Learn a few variations to your day-to-day exercises that will help improve your shooting.The exercises are short and easy to follow.

Archery Strong, only about average
I found it to outline pretty basic physical exercise routines.Nothing particulary different than what you might do yourself to keep physically fit.There are a couple of variations of typical exercises that are supposed to improve archery-specific muscles, but the variations are pretty small.I was expecting some very specific routines that focus on some of the critical archery functions, but found it to be lacking, in my opinion.

Get Stronger
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get stronger without a huge time committment. The training information is cutting edge, the exercises are explained in detail, and I can do them in my garage. I was skeptical at first given the short workouts, but I am totally fatigued after each one. It definitely works, I am getting stronger each week which is sure to improve my shooting.

This is the first book I've seen that gears fitness directly to archery.The workouts are quick and effective.The pictures are self-explanatory.

In a tradition extending back for centuries, and eventually becoming part of English law, all boys were to be provided with a bow and two arrows at the age of six to begin archery training. When the longbow gave way to firearms in the sixteenth century, the ancient statute was relaxed. At that point, rather than disappear, the longbow began a new life as the centerpiece of recreational archery. Quickly abandoned by villagers, the longbow found itself in the hands of gentlemen who formed social clubs around the bow. These clubs and societies of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries--tightly regulated by social distinction--offered members an opportunity to meet their peers in pleasant concourse. Target and range competitions were natural events at club functions, but roving also became popular, with archers walking across vast swathes of open estate country following their arrows in golflike fashion. Initially men-only, archery clubs in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries began accepting women members. Fantastic
Mr Soar has written another in depth book for all those who love the longbow and it's history. This book deals quite adeptly with how the longbow was used after it's famous Medieval hey day. How it turned from a national weapon of war to a sporting weapon that also brought many people together in socially acceptable ways. This book is a must read for any longbow buff. Fred Bear's Field notes
Out of all the Fred Bear books, this is without a doubt my favorite, documents most of his hunts from 1955 on. Never thought I would get a signed first edition, I LOVE Amazon, good luck finding that in a used bookstore!I actually met the artist, Wayne Trimm that did the first edition artwork, too bad I couldn't have got his signature on it too! Fred Bear was a major influence on what bowhunting and archery is today, he was a trailblazer in his field, a great read

Excellent reading for a person who hunts
This is an absolute must read for a person who hunts with a Bow.
It's almost as if you are there with Fred, the man who became a legend in the sport of bowhunting. This book has made me start to journal all of my own hunts, not for a book, but for my family in the future to better know me and the sport I love.

brilliant insights,lame prose style

Ian Myles Slater on: On Intriguing Look at Odysseus
The bibliography of Homeric studies is almost inconceivably vast (there are acute comments by contemporaries of Socrates), and I can't claim to have read more than a small fraction of even the major works in English. However, I once made an effort to find, and read, the most famous and / or frequently cited works.

At about the same time this work first appeared, to generally excellent reviews, and I added it to my "must read" list as soon as it arrived in the UCLA library. Although I found that I disagreed with, for example, some of his views on the oral-formulaic theory of composition, the argument was well-expressed. I kept on reading. The previous reading of major critics turned out to be helpful in understanding Austin's book, which itself proved exceptionally illuminating for my next re-reading of Homer -- not always the case, unfortunately.

"Archery at the Dark of the Moon" is in part a close reading of the Odyssey, in part a sustained argument over theories of reading and interpretation. As I have suggested, it is probably not a good place for someone to start. For those with some background, in both Homeric issues and critical theory, it will be rewarding reading.

Don't ask me to sort out exactly how it changed my views of an already familiar text, not at this date. When I re-read Austin in paperback in the mid-1990s, I was surprised at how familiar it still seemed; I had assimilated that much. For me, that marks it as an extremely impressive book.

The first chapter, for example, despite my reservations, has some acute observations about the "fixed epithets" attached to Odysseus, and how their appearance is governed by more than metrical considerations. He shows that almost all of the sixty-odd uses of "polymetis" -- usually translated as something like "of many plans" -- appear when the hero is about to cajole, convince, or trick someone. He suggests that "thinking hard, he said" might be a better rendering. In any case, this hero is being described in ways more meaningful than his ships, which, as is well known, are "black" or "hollow" in accordance with the space to be filled in the line, not their appearance or cargo capacity.

On larger issues, too, such as the working of the story, Austin has much to say that is worth attention. I doubt that there will ever be a generally convincing explanation of the (rather bizarre) archery contest that forms the climax of the epic (and provides his title), but Austin is at least interesting as a critic of the story, without needing to propose unusual axe-shapes and odd modifications of the laws of physics to justify the text.

Highly Recommended
A classic.First person account of some of the originators of the art. Opinionated and has an obvious personal bias (Thank goodness for some honesty !).Some of the stories are hilarious as well as illuminating and insightful.The story about Rube Goldberg vs. an Aikido master is almost worth the price of the book. Too many of the present day martial artists take themselves too seriously.A look at this book could help show them the humor and humanity that the martial arts really contain.
