Product Description
Bringing together an interdisciplinary team from across the EU, this book connects elements of cultural and planning theories to explain differences and peculiarities among EU member states. A 'culturized planning model' is introduced to consider the 'rules of the game' how culture affects planning practices not only on an explicit 'surface' but also on a 'hidden' implicit level. The model consists of three analytical dimensions 'planning artifacts', 'planning environment' and 'societal environment'. This book adopts these dimensions to compare planning cultures of different European countries. This sheds light not only on the organizational or institutional structure of planning, but also the influence of deeper cultural values and layers on planning and implementation processes. ... Product Description
Italian villas are generally regarded as beautiful havens where a privileged elite, fleeing the harsh realities of the city, found peace and harmony amid buildings and gardens framed upon classical ideals of proportion, balance, and the natural. In her interdisciplinary book, Dianne Harris presents a radically different view of villa life as it developed during the eighteenth century on the vast estates dominating the fertile Lombard plain. Governed from Vienna by a Habsburg regime bent upon increased tax revenues, the great landowning families lived lives fraught with tensions and contradictions. Although they retained many privileges and indulged in shows of wealth and social distinction, they faced mounting demands for reform and progress from an absolutist state. The Nature of Authority employs what Harris calls 'panoramic history' to trace the mingling of enlightened reform and a culture of display in the design and functioning of villas and villa life in eighteenth-century Lombardy. Cadastral maps are juxtaposed with Marc'Antonio Dal Re's famous prints of the 'delights' of villa life; both are woven into an exceptionally wide-ranging investigation of the villas, their gardens, and crop-bearing fields and their representation in visual and written sources from agricultural treatises to books of etiquette. Combining this diverse material with a sharp focus upon the organization of space and class privilege, Harris shows how the villas served as centers of complex cultural and sociopolitical transactions, fashioning a landscape that was at once a beguiling vista and a tool in the enforcement of a strict hierarchy of use and value. Harris's innovative book reveals the complicity of landscape in the formation of culture and the structures of everyday life. It also elucidates the significance of Lombardy as a testing ground for Habsburg policies of enlightened reform in the social and natural orders. ... Read more

Product Description
More than 150 years old and still going strong, the Iowa State Fair is an American institution that was recently selected by bestselling author Patricia Schultz as one of the 1000 Places to See Before You Die. Once an opportunity for country folk to come to town, experience the community of fellow farmers, and show off the fruits of their labor, today the fair attracts more than one million attendees from urban, suburban, and rural locales. They are all longing for an authentic American experience, a celebration of the abundance of our land, and the talents of our people. Iowa State Fair is the first comprehensive history of this extraordinary confluence of cows and corn dogs, midwestern culture, and classic Americana.

Iowa State Fair samples every flavor at the fair, from the fairy tale State Fair of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical to the surreal site of staged locomotive collisions to Norma Duffield Lyon s 2000 pound butter sculpture of The Last Supper. Beauty-queen contestants, fans of Kid Rock and Kenny Chesney, 30,000 annual blue ribbon winners, and deep fried Twinkie eaters fill its pages with visual delight. Author Thomas Leslie brings the fair to life, recounting its fascinating background and noting why today it is more popular than ever.

Like the fair itself, this book celebrates the state's agricultural heritage and provides a heartwarming portrait of an event that is, quite literally, as American as apple pie. Iowa State Fair will please the fairgoer in all of us. Last year's 1,013,063 attendees can't be wrong. ... Read more

Product Description

What makes up a capital city? In this first comprehensive look at the architectural and urban visions for a European capital, Hein examines how these visions compare to the reality of the three headquarter cities for the European Union: Strasbourg, Luxembourg, and Brussels. Tracing the history of the EU and its creation of the new political entity of the polycentric capital, Hein explores the impact that European unification has on visionary projects and the transformation of EU member cities. Widely researched, the book also brings in architectural projects that have remained largely unknown until now.

Using architectural and urban history as a lens, Hein examines the past five decades of European unification. Also analyzed for the first time are the debates, plans, projects, and constructions—both realized and failed—that accompanied this process. Looking to the future, Hein asserts that the task of these three capital cities is to balance the needs of a collective Europe with national, local, and—increasingly—regional demands.

Product Description
For 350 years, the Taj Mahal in Agra has reigned luminous and splendid as perhaps the most admired monument in the world. Visitors who gazed across the Yamuna River from the Taj pavilions have viewed what appears to be little more than farmers' fields and barren ground. But historical references as well as paintings from the time of Shahjahan (r. 1628-58) reveal that it was once densely covered by rectangular walled enclosures and lush vegetation. The Mughal emperor Babur built gardens here as a way of evoking the characteristic delights of the homeland he had abandoned when he moved from Central Asia into India in 1526. Eventually, as the Mughal Empire grew more powerful, the riverbank became lined with gardens belonging not only to the imperial family but also to important nobles.

This definitive volume describes the discoveries of an international project documenting the surface remains of a long-abandoned Mughal garden, spectacularly located directly across the river from the Taj Mahal. The book is illustrated with new photographs of the Taj Mahal and the garden--now identified as the Mahtab Bagh, or Moonlight Garden--as well as with paintings from Shahjahan's era.

Modeled after the Persian concept of earthly paradise, the pleasure gardens of 17th-century Mughal emperors exhibited elaborate renditions of cut-stone architecture, water chutes, standing pools, flowing fountains, and plantings intended to stimulate the senses. Well-ordered oases in an otherwise hot, dusty, and chaotic environment, these gardens were places of respite and enjoyment. The authors show that in plan, proportion, and directional alignment, the Moonlight Garden is indeed an integral part of the design of the gardens at the Taj Mahal, presenting an expansive new interpretation of one of the most famous buildings in the world. ... Product Description
The beauty, resources, and natural processes of theCalifornia landscape are brought to the home garden in Mark Francisand Andreas Reimann's fine testament to ecological gardening. Theauthors connect history, culture, region, and design to help usunderstand how California and its human population have evolvedhistorically and how individuals today can make a difference in thestate's future in their own backyards. The authors' goal is to bringthe history of the California garden up to date with the ecologicaland cultural concerns of our time.

Francis and Reimann use Californias natural beauty and habitatas a starting point for inspiring Californians to see their gardens asextensions of the surrounding landscape. They provide essentialinformation on native plants and wildlife, ecology and bioregionalism, landscape history and design concepts, as well as numerous examplesshowing how to integrate environmental principles in one's garden.

Landscape meaning and regional thinking are an important part ofan ecosystem approach to home gardening, say the authors. By observingnear-by native or naturalized environments, including vacant lots andabandoned property, one learns a good deal about local plants, wildlife, and other elements that can be incorporated into anecologically sensitive garden.

Yan Nascimbene's exquisite color illustrations perfectly capturethe author' sensual vision of an environment different from gardenscommonly featured in gardening books and magazines. Photographsillustrate the designs of many of the best landscape architectsworking in the tradition of the California landscape garden, includingRon Lutsko, Topher Delaney, Owen Dell, Ann Chris-toph, and RickFisher. This is a book for anyone seeking a garden philosophy that isenvironmentally sensitive, and even experienced home gardeners, landscape professionals, and horticulturists will find new and usefulmaterial here. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
This book manages to be both inspirational and incredibly informative at the same time. The book integrates principles of native landscaping, sustainable design, habitat restoration, and traditional garden design. It also provides rich details about many of California's plant communities and wildlife species.

While the authors strongly advocate for sustainable practices, I found the book refreshingly non-dogmatic. For example, they say it's fine to incorporate non-native species into your garden; they even recognize the value of lawns.

I only wish the book had more and larger photos. As I read about all the amazing plants and landscapes the authors discussed, it would have been nice to see what they were writing about.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Holistic Treatment of Native Landscaping
Francis and Reimann have covered all bases of native landscaping in this fine statement of integral composition. A sensitive awareness of local and regional native flora/fauna
should govern choices of construction materials to plant selection for a harmonic flow and consistency between the untouched native environs to the project site for a "....sense
of connection with the larger harmonies of the biosphere..." (Page 36, quoted from William Carney).

The book includes lists of regional native flora and fauna- birds, animals, insects, amphibians, etc. and many resources for further information- books, native landscape architects, plant nurseries, and many illustrations including demonstration gardens.

This book is a must for all those interested in incorporating native plants into their landscape, especially architects, builders and landscape designerswho want to learn about beautiful and environmentally beneficial native plants.

Product Description
As a boy who grew up in Akron, F.A. Seiberling tramped the fields and woods outside of the city, hunting the area where stone had once been quarried. Even, then the dramatic views of the Cuyahoga Valley, natural vistas that spread before him like paintings, would stop young Frank in his tracks. He never forgot them. Years later the founder of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company would build Stan Hywet--the Old English term for stone quarry--a sixty-five-room Tudor Revivial mansion on seventy acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, orchards, and vistas.

The skill and artistry of photographers Ian Adams and Barney Taxel portray the splendor of the four seasons at Stan Hywet, now maintained through the Stan Hywet Hall Foundation. These vivid images depict the restored mansion in its magnificent setting, capturing the springtime charm of mayapples and periwinkle in the Dell, the classic elegance of Gertrude SeiberlingÂ’s Music Room, and the stark grandeur of snow-covered oaks mirrored in a reflection pool. From spring mornings to Christmas celebrations, Steve Love narrates as the reader strolls through the rooms and halls of the mansion and rambles down the lanes through its magnificent gardens and into the lives of the Seiberlings.

With a foreword by F.A.Â’s grandson, former congressman John F. Seiberling, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens captures the Seiberling family motto, "Non Nobis Solum," or, "Not for Us Alone"---a motto which remains engraved, to this day, above the entrance to the Manor House. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely lovely book that describes an awesome home!
I have had the privilege of visiting this grand estate. Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens rivals all of the greats-- the Biltmore Estate, Oak Alley Plantation, Monticello, and Mount Vernon. Likewise, this book is a sheer testament to the Sieberling's country home. If you ever get the chance to visit the Akron, Ohio area, I strongly suggest visiting this wonderful and magical place!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stan Hywet
This is an outstanding book that describes a beautiful mansion andarchtectural treasure in terms of the family that built it, lived in it,enjoyed it, shared it, and ultimately saved it. The photography isexcellent and the story of the family - with its ups & downs -fascinating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens
For someone born and raised in the neighborhood that now surrounds this once country home of Rubber Baron F.A. Seiberling, this book is a wonderful rememberance of one of America's fine castles.

The Foreword is written byJohn F. Seiberling, F.A.'s grandson, who spend his childhood growing up onthe estate. He provides a wonderful account of the history of this familyhome which is interwoven with old family photos.

Steve Love's textprovides a wonderful account of the house and it's history. For usneighbors, Love sets some of the myths we had learned about the house andcontents straight. He provides us not with the story of a house but thetale of a family and their home. Love also paints a picture of very wealthyman who had not forgotten respect for nature he learned as a boy growing upon a nearby farm and as a man who shared prosperity with his workers as heemployed his landscape architect to lay out communities for his workers aswell as his executives.Seiberling's contribution to the Akron area inparks and community planning have shaped much of the area today. It seemsonly proper, upon FA's passing at 95, the community gathered to for theFoundation which has kept this estate intact and preserved it's beauty forus to share.

Photographers Ian Adams and Barney Taxel take us on apictorial tour of the estate and choose to organize their work by theseasons. This seasonal account continues to present the estate as morethan a building but as a family home capturing the beauty of the fabulouslandscape throughout the year. The colors and clarity of their workcaptures this marvelous old home at it's very best.We see the inside andoutside in great detail, thus sharing the spendor of this greatmanor.

This book should be a required reading for all Ohio schoolchildren as part of required Ohio history studies. For those who enjoyhistory of the industrialists of the last century this is a delightfulread. For those those who have an appreciation for architecture, interiordesign and landscaping, this book capture the essence of this home. Thisbook can prepare one for a visit to the estate, serve as a keepsake forthose who have been there, or provide a tour to those who don't have achance to visit our neighborhood.

This book perpetuates the Seiberlingfamily motto - Non Nobis Solum (Not for us alone) as this wonderfulphotographic and verbal account of this family home serves to further sharethe beauty of this magnificent estate with all who read. ... Read more

Product Description
Following the same format as their critically acclaimed companion work about Long Island's North Shore families, "Long Island's Prominent South Families: Their Estates and Their Country Homes in the Towns of Babylon and Islip" documents 456 estate owners in a modified "Who's Who" format. Included are 290 photographs of the estates, biographical data on the estate owners and their families, locations of estates using current street references and village designations, estate names, architects, architectural styles, dates of construction, landscape architects, subsequent owners, location of archival photographs of the estates, and information as to whether mansions are still extant, and, if not, the dates of demolition.Cross-referenced in the second-section appendices are estate names, village locations of estates, as well as, architectural and landscape commissions. The civic activity and occupation appendices document the contribution of Long Islanders, including statesmen, intelligence agents, financiers, writers, and inventors. Maiden names, rehabilitative secondary uses of estates including golf courses which were formerly private estates, a general bibliography of the "Gilded Age," and a bibliography specific to individual estate owners, with the location of personal papers, have also been included. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information
This is an interesting book full of information. One would have wished for better and larger photographs, but then I suppose the cost would have been considerably greater.I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the entire book, but I do know that the entry on page 76 concerning the Foster family contains a number of basic errors. It appears that the authors used mostly secondary sources for the family information and did not check them against any primary documentation.
From my own research I know that William R. Foster, Jr. was the son of William R. Foster, Sr. and Harriet Peers. He was not the son of John S. Foster (John S. was his brother).William Jr., accused of swindling the Produce Exchange, fled to Europe in 1888.While abroad he supposedly married Lulu Belote/Benoit whom he had passed off as his ward to Long Island society. In 1898 he was finally extradited to the US but was freed on $20,000 bail and promptly disappeared.

4-0 out of 5 stars SOUTH SHORE FAMILIES
As a native of the area and familiar with many of the families and their homes profiled in the book, I consider the book to be an excellent and scholarly work, of great assistance in writing a family memoir. However, I did find a few factual errors and omissions. I have submitted corrections to the authors to be used in the event that they publish an up-date. ... Read more
