Only useful for the specialist.
This book is considered to be "the great survey" of early Renaissance architecture, and is, in fact, the only one that has ever been written covering the subject (except for a 1998 book in Italian that is really more a collection of articles). I find this lack of surveys rather surprising as Renaissance architecture is one of the most well-loved subjects in art history, and I would think that specialists, students, and laymen would demand a simple World of Art kind of treatment of the topic. The Pelican series generally does not provide this type of clear, thesis-driven introductory text, and Heydenreich's book is no exception. It is a collection of facts--a catalog of "this building was built then and it shows influence from that and the architect was so-and-so"--with minimal interpretation and explanation (we generally don't even learn what details indicate that "this" building was influenced by "that" one). A great deal of familiarity with the material is required on the part of the reader, so the text entirely failed my mission of gaining a broad understanding of quattrocento architecture. If you are well-versed in the topic and are looking for a reference, this book may be helpful; if you're looking for elucidation, it almost surely won't be. The most Heydenreich seems to be able to say about the style of buildings or the reason they were compelling to their contemporaries is that they were "perfect" and "beautiful," terms I have heard altogether too frequently (and too frequently unexplained) from Renaissance art historians. I regret that I have no better book to recommend in Heydenreich's place.

On a somewhat different note, the binding of the paperback Pelican books is shoddy at best. By the time I had finished this book, which I did read cover to cover despite really disliking it (it's only 151 pages anyway), all of its pages were falling out! ... Read more

disappointed
I suppose I was set up for disappointment by the four 5-star reviews, so this is to balance those out - Actually, I'd give this a three and a half, mainly because I am used to books where at least the majority of the reproductions are in colour. This is the pitfall of buying unseen off the internet, and I think that disappointment for me is the main reaction for many art books purchased this way. In this volume, everthing is in black and white with the exception of five or six inserts each with maybe fifteen or twenty buildings featured in colour. That said, the text is readable, and from the little I know of Russian architecture, comprehensive. Just be aware of the pictures being mainly in black and white.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
A wonderful book on a fascinating subject.Russian architecture is so varied, I really had no idea and this book is exhaustingly thorough.I especially enjoyed the section on Imperial Russian Architecture and the later Soviet Architecture.It is obvious how Speer influenced Soviet architecture, his Third Reich Berlin may have never been realized, but his spirit it is alive and well in Soviet buildings.If you have any interest in Russia or architecture or just well researched, scholarly books, then i cant imagine you being disappointed.

MANY OF THE PICTURES, AT LEAST THE COLOR ONES, ARE FULL PAGE SIZED. THE PICTURE QUALITIES ARE VERY GOOD AND THE SUBJECT MATTER OF COURSE IS AWESOME. Reviewing book is the best modern book in English about a history ofRussian architecture. The book covers whole periods of a long history ofthe glorious Russian architecture. This book is required reading for the open Yale course on Roman Art and Architecture.It is a perfect compliment to the course or it could very easily be read without the course.I intend to travel to Italy to see these beautiful sites and I will certainly take my book with me.

Sites and Insights
I found this book to be an excellent, even masterly, coverage of the subject. It is bound by its period, but still gives a sense of the continuity of architectural development from the native Italian, Etruscan, Hellenic and particularly the Hellenistic influences on the growth of Roman architecture into and through the Imperial period. It also covers the continuity of architectural styles, technologies and traditions into the Romanesque period.
I liked the way in which the author covered the regional influences on architecture in the various parts of the Roman world, especially contrasting the East, with its substantial existing traditions, styles and techniques, with the "frontier" type of situation in the West, where the new introduction of Roman technologies and styles all but eclipsed those which had gone before.
The author's writing style seemed the relaxed intimations of a man comfortable with his mastery of the material and without the need to prove himself. I found a particular enjoyment in the tone of someone enjoying passing on the details of his favourite subject.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in the way the Romans solved some of the universal challenges of a built environment. ... Read more

No Place Like Home is a book which tries to capture the essential spirit of Springfield, Ohio, as expressed by its architecture over the last two hundred years. The story begins with the crude structures erected by pioneers like Simon Kenton. These huts of rough logs and branches are seen to gradually give way to more refined structures using hewn logs and regular carpentry techniques.

With the arrival of numerous settlers from the East and North, architecture is seen as a reflection of their varied backgrounds. Most newcomers are farmers. Those from Virginia, like David Crabill, prefer a traditional Scotch-Irish type of house, while the ones from Pennsylvania seek to build into the sides of hills, or banks.

When new arrivals from eastern cities begin to increase, so too do the demands for the newer urban styles of architecture. In the mid 1830s Dr. Berkley Gillett leaves upper New York State and brings the Greek Revival style for his new home. This will soon give way to the Gothic Revival in homes such as that of pioneer druggist, John Ludlow, and Gothic windows will be found in Springfield homes up to the 1870s.

By the mid-1850s the Italianate style began to dominate the Springfield scene. It would remain in control until the early 1880s, although fading earlier in other places. Italianate and Italian Renaissance style houses and public buildings were built everywhere in the city and county. Some of the most outstanding specimens of this style were built in the newer residential areas of South Market Street (now Fountain Avenue) and East High Street. The homes built by John Foos and James Rinehart are some of the most noteworthy.

The lifespan of the French Mansard style in Springfield was brief, but its products were beautiful. The homes of Frank Bookwalter, his brother-in-law, Warren Leffel, and Elijah Middleton brought this most cosmopolitan of revival styles to the local scene where it truly sparkled.

In the 1880s and 1890s first the Eastlake and then the Queen Anne would all be used for local housing. However, it was the Richardsonian Romanesque that became the most important style. Interpreted by local architect, Charles Cregar, it provided a wealth of prominent buildings. It reached its apex in the vast mansion created by Asa Bushnell, who would soon become Governor of Ohio.

Following the Columbian Exposition in 1893, Springfield followed the main lines of American architecture, providing more homes for an expanding middle class. Private home ownership became the theme of Springfield real estate developer Harry Kissell, who would go on to national fame. Remaining a strong manufacturing city in the early twentieth century, its residents of means continued to build grand homes. The book concludes with the "Last Hurrah" of the Barons of Industry in the Mediterranean style mansions of John Bushnell and C. F. Greiner.

No Place Like Home is exactly what it says it is. It is the proclamation that Springfield, Ohio is the place where we grew up. It's the place where we have always seen grand mansions while standing in humble front yards. It's a place where we have a long history, but we have always found it a comfortable history, never intimidating. Our architectural history ever beckons the newcomer as it welcomes back the native. Great Reference for "designer's block".
I bought this book while still a student in architecure school. After many, many years of professional practice I still regularly pull this book off my shelf when I need a jolt out of "designer's block".

This book is a reference tool and nothing else. It contains many reference sketches from a variety of architectural elements including but not limited to plan form layouts, facade massing elements, door and window surround details.

It is not highly detailed in terms of each and every line and form. It is however highly useful for forms and massing. Just what the designer sometimes needs to generate an idea when design ideas don't seem to be forthcoming easily.I have actually used sketches for say a gate and then adapted an idea developed from it to formulate an entry detail unrelated to a gate.Often the finished idea does not look like the sketch found in this book from which it originated...but then that is the idea of a designer...sometimes all we need is as concept or spark of an idea to let our imiginations develop it into the final product.

Of all the architectual books I own (and there are many) this one has been used by me the most.

Beautiful Experience
This book is a very well rounded and well written review of the art and architecture of Africa.It is very eye opening about the artistic abilities of these ancient people.It even goes beyond what we know about their construction.You find that awe-inspiring palaces were not confined to Egypt and the rest of North Africa, but advanced societies had flourished apart from the rest of the world.I really don't want to give away any of the details, but you won't regret the purchase of this book.

Belongs in the Medievalist's or Art Student's Library
Part of the Oxford History of Art Series, this text on medieval architecture by Nicola Coldstream is an excellent survey of the development of architectural forms throughout the medieval period. Designed for the art major who is taking courses on architectural forms and history, the text provides a well-rounded presentation on the subject. Commencing with the derivation of the word "gothic," the book goes on to describe gothic's subsequent development as an architectural form through some five hundred years, and presents the differentiating features of the early, high, and late gothic, the flamboyant, and the rayonnant forms.

After this orientation to the term "gothic," the text moves into a section on "Structure and Design," which covers floor plan design, architectural models, the role of the architect, and constructive geometry. A large section of the book covers the symbiotic roles of patrons and builders. Later sections of the book cover issues such as architectural space and representational art in great detail. Numerous full-color diagrammatic images support the text, and maps are also used as needed, making this book quite an impressive introductory text to the subject that should orient any reader to the subject.

It is rare to find a book on such a theme that is simultaneously printed on high-quality semi-gloss paper, presented with the majority of its images in full color, be small enough to comfortably hold, and at the same time, be reasonably priced. This book, however, fits the bill admirably. The only small quibble would be that not ALL the photos are color. The majority indeed are, but it is unfortunate that, in an attempt, no doubt, to keep the cost down, a number of the photos are reproduced only in black and white. Nevertheless, and especially when one considers the price, it is pleasing to find the majority of photos are in color, and reproduced in good quality, as well. I highly recommend this book as an outstanding part of the library of a medievalist, an art scholar, or simply anyone interested in the emergence of gothic architecture. That the book is available at less than $15 is simply incredible.

Extraordinary book
Peter Blundell Jones is one of the very few contemporary architectural teachers/critics/reviewers/historians out there that actually creates architectural knowledge when he writes. He is an architect to begin with, just like all the (few) other writers in this British architectural writing tradition. In this book he walks the reader through several masterpieces of the 20th century, articulating in written the keyarchitectural thoughts as they are made manifest in each of the built designs.
His precise, clear, knowledgeable, solid, illuminating prose makes the pseudo-architectural-babble dominating much of academia and the architectural fashion press industry crumble to pieces --which is a reason why this book should be read as early as possible by every architectural student, and will feel like a breath of fresh air to everybody else even if already somehow familiar with the buildings.
It is an excellent introduction to several essential buildings you will want to study in detail through publications and visits. It is an excellent introduction to true architectural observation and analyisis. And it is an excellent introduction to architectural thought. A pictorial "Ferrari" of history of architecture books
A part of the series History of World Architecture originally published by Electa in Italian in 1971-7 under a general editorship of Pier Luigi Nervi, it was translated to English and published by Abrams in 1971-80 in b&w only, but at 10 x 11 1/4 inches. Subsequently, the series was reedited, shrunk to 8 5/7 x 9 1/2 inches, and published by Electa / Rizzoli in 1985-9 with a few color photos added including each front cover. In the early 2000's, the series was reissued by Phaidon unchanged except for the front cover photo. It is a pictorial "Ferrari" of history of architecture books. Almost every page contains one or - usually - more than one illustration as photo, plan, section, elevation, axonometric view, etc. of the highest quality. They depict the best examples of topical architecture covering the most significant ones. The text was written by one of the best experts in the field. While relatively concise, it is still comprehensive and complete enough even for students of architecture.
