wonderful
A good book for a visitor to NYC This book starts with the bornof New York City in 17th century, and covers many famous (and not sofamous) architectures with about 200 photos taken by the author.Itcovers Georgian influence of 18th Century, Greek revival of 19th century, the Chicago school...etc. The Art Deco Skyscrapers, such as the EmpireState building and the Chrysler building are well described.A wholechapter is devoted to Rockefeller Center. The history of MOMA (Museum ofModern Art) is interesting... For me, this book seems to have somesmall shortcomings. This book lacks "up to date" information.(This revised edition was first published in 1994.) Also, as a fan of FrankLloyd Wright, I hope Guggenheim Museum have been covered more. ... Read more |

Castles: Their Construction and History by Sidney Toy
Could be Better
Timeless Work
Just the facts.
Sometimes too technical, but very helpful! Add it to a military history collection, a chivalric textscollection, or to your Lego room for the next time you want a more powerfulcastle than the kit suggests (but, putting little lego men heads on pikesat the gates may be going overboard). ... Editorial Review Product Description Today, there are more than twenty complete zodiacs in Washington, D.C., each one pointing to an extraordinary mystery. David Ovason, who has studied these astrological devices for ten years, now reveals why they have been placed in such abundance in the center of our nation's capital and explains their interconnections. His richly illustrated text tells the story of how Washington, from its foundation in 1791, was linked with the zodiac, with the meaning of certain stars, and with a hidden cosmological symbolism that he uncovers here for the first time. Fascinating and thoroughly researched, The Secret Architecture of Our Nation 's Capital is an engrossing book that raises provocative questions and otters complex insights into the meanings behind the mysterious symbols in Washington. What is the competence of the designer after all?
A must read for anyone into design Just knowing that everything in this book came directly from Gropius hand is fascinating. It's a look into an aspect of design/architecture that biographies and history books just can't give you.
