4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, portable Louvre guide.
This is a nice little book, compact and well organized, with floor plans(some fold-out) of the major galleries and descriptions of major works as well as various articles and historical information.I carried this with me on a recent trip to the Louvre and found it very informative, though of course not comprehensive. Descriptions of major works are included and very illuminating. The material on the history of the Louvre is also interesting. The layout can be a little busy to follow, though, since articles on side topics are interwoven with the descriptions of works.

I had to have Amazon send a replacement copy for the first, however, because it was defective (where there should have been a floor plan for French Sculpture (at pages 217 through 222), there was instead an insert of the Italian Paintings plan, which was numbered as pages 271 to 273 (which is duplicative of later pages in the book, because the same insert appears again). The replacement copy is fine, however, so it does not appear to be a problem that should affect other purchasers. ... Product Description
An internationally renowned architect and lecturer, Daniel Libeskind is one of the world’s most influential figures in architecture. Best-known for his first project, the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Libeskind’s work resonates with Jewish history, as is reflected in projects such as the Felix Nussbaum Haus (Germany) and the Danish Jewish Museum (Copenhagen). His innovative design for the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco became his first commission in North America, and the spectacular building is now completed. With breathtaking photography, insightful essays, and an illuminating text by the architect, this volume is the first to examine Libeskind’s Jewish museums and to feature the architect’s vibrant new building in California. ... Product Description
The work of Diller + Scofidio questions how architecture may contribute to a probing and unresolved engagement with the world by challenging the images of stability and control we conventionally confer upon our buildings. Their new design for The Eyebeam Atelier in New York not only reveals the innards of the museum by making a huge transparent billboard of the people, art and media-technology it contains, it also frames the intrinsically mutable identity of any contemporary cultural institution. In the end their proposition for this new media arts and performance center does much more than simply provide an armature for a new vision of art and technology--it produces vision itself.Essay by Kenneth Mitnick.Paperback, 6.5 x 9 in./96 pgs / 35 color 0 BW0 duotone 30 Line Drawings~ Item D20218 ... Product Description
This book analyses the rich and remarkable collection of archaeological drawings, now housed in The British Museum, drawn in Greece by a team of architects and artists in the service of Lord Elgin during his ambassadorial expedition to the Levant (1799-1803). Luciana Gallo offers a new interpretation of Elgin's interest in antiquities and reveals the aims, innovative approach, and significant achievements of this specialised tour. She also reveals his contribution to the advancement of contemporary archaeological studies carried out by British and continental scholars, in connection to the search for original sources to promote Greek Revival architecture. This is the first time that the bulk of the Elgin Drawings collection in the British Museum has been published. The volume will thus serve as an indispensable guide to scholars and students of ancient Greek architecture and sculpture, as well as of nineteenth-century architectural revivalism. ... Read more

Part of a series that places buildings within their historical context, this text considers the Museum of Modern Art in Japan, the Clore Gallery and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not a survey of 20th Century museum architecture
The previous reviewer seems to have written the right review for the wrong book... This is NOT a survey of modern museum architecture, and don't expect to find either Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bibao or Piano's Beyeler Foundation in Basel. Although I do not own this book, I want to stress that it covers only three buildings, but in remarkable depth, one each by Isozaki, Stirling, and Freed of Pei Cobb Freed. Each of the three books situates the context of the work within the architect's oeuvre, and comprises a section of top-notch photographs, as well as a selection of drawings, including construction details. I should make it clear that Phaidon's "Architecture 3S" series is a collection of hardcovers comprising three "Architecture in Detail" volumes each. I have only the best to say about the quality of the "Architecture in Detail" series, and pricewise the "Architecture 3S" series is a bargain: for less than the price of one "Architecture in Detail" volume one can buy three volumes bound together as an "Architecture 3S" title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Each museum is briefly described with simple pictures
This book is not an art book; it is a reasonable list of extraordinary museum buildings including the most recents (Guggeheim museum in Bilbao). I was happy to re-discover Beyeler fondation in Basle (Switzerland) and someother famous masterpieces but a bit disappointed not to feel inspired inanyway by the way this book was designed. ... Product Description
In the years since the completion of Jørn Utzon s Sydney Opera House countries throughout the South Pacific have displayed a particular fascination with the possibility that architecture may be able to embody regional cultural identity. This book examines a number of major museums, art galleries and cultural centers that have been constructed in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific regions. The majority of these buildings, landscapes or structures have been completed in the last few years and all have employed different architectural strategies to shape their designs. This collection of nine critical essays by leading scholars of contemporary architecture provides an important survey and assessment of Antipodean cultural architecture.Emphasizing common traits, the introduction to the text asks how this phenomenon might be understood and why it may be relevant in different regions around the world.Acknowledging the pluralistic nature of Antipodean architecture, the conclusion offers an alternative hermeneutical framework, one that accepts the fragmentary nature of the contemporary cultural landscape ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Marsupial Structures
In this era of google image searching, might it be possible to read a book about visually striking architecture, without photographs? I read Antipodean Structures with the assumption that it could be done, and my assumption was confirmed. In any case, this book goes well beneath the shiny exteriors of buildings like the National Museum of Australia, Federation Square, even The Sydney Opera House. These and five other buildings are examined in terms of societal aspirations in the millennial period, and I'm not sure that could have been done so convincingly in a book that pandered to the market's appetite for archi-sexual imagery.

All of the essays are good, but I will make special mention of Davina Jackson's engaging commentary on Federation Square (it presents as a relatively catchy read in an otherwise dense volume), and Philip Goad's very detailed discussion of the National Gallery of Victoria (this too is an enjoyable read, and a thorough piece of history writing). But I most enjoyed Ostwald's and Fleming's Introduction and Conclusion. These gave me the clearest sense yet of the cultural and geographical factors behind the phantasmagorical architecture of this region. The authors don't say it quite so bluntly as I'm about to, but: ideas received from the Northern hemisphere, breeding within isolated colonies of architects are amplified in this region, leading to buildings as strange as the region's wildlife.

A scholarly and probing analysis of a subject too often broached via imagery. Four Stars. I'll save the fifth star for the reprint, if it includes black and white images.

Product Description
Every city has at least one, and great cities often have more. From the Louvre to the Bilbao Guggenheim, the museum has had a long-standing relationship with the city. This ground-breaking volume examines the meaning of museum architecture in the urban environment, considering important issues such as forms of civic representation, urban regeneration, cultural tourism and the museumification of the city itself. Bringing together an international group of distinguished scholars from a range of disciplines, this volume bridges the gap between museum studies and traditional architectural history. The contributors explore the conceptual architectural frameworks that govern the museum's diverse symbolic structures and focus attention on the complex ways in which museums function in the city. Ranging from the 17th century to the present day, the detailed and thoroughly researched case studies are drawn from Great Britain, continental Europe, South America and Australia.

Product Description
The Frankfurt Museum for Decorative Arts is one of Richard Meier's major buildings of the 1980s. This book looks at this building which is based on Le Corbusier's Purist syntax and sets out from two existing geometries found on the site: the cube formed by the Villa Metzler (an earlier neo-classical pavilion, incorporated by Meier into the new design) and the slightly skew angle between the museum site and the riverbank. From these origins Meier created a building consisting of shifted grids, superimposed planes, reverse curves and ramps. It should be especially useful for all architects and students interested in museum design, or more generally in Richard Meier's strategies of architectural composition. The book is part of the "Architecture in Detail" series. The books do not carry a contents list. The common layout of the books in the series is: essay, photographs, specially commissioned drawings, reference details (bibliography and chronology). Each of these monographs is designed to be a complete and accurate archival record and intended to be the standard reference on that building for students and scholars as well as practising architects. ...
