Product Description

These are the best things that happened to me the year I didn't go to school:

  • Traveled around Italy with my family's theatre troupe.
  • Performed in a theatre outside. (I was a monkey, a panda, and a lion!)
  • Ate spaghetti with fried egg on top.
  • Slept in a truck.
  • Wove cowboy boots.
  • Ciao! (I spoke Italian.)
  • Kept a journal to remember everything that happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
I gave this book as a present to a little friend of mine, after seeing an exhibit of the illustrations and falling in love with them myself.

Her parents have to ration reading the book! She loves it so much that, left to herself, she'd read it over and over in the same sitting.

I'm now going to buy it for another little friend of mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book from a fanciful artist
I love this book.I had seen some of the artworks in a gallery last year and am so glad to have found the book they belong to.It's a fun read and a fantastick family adventure. This would make a great introduction to the possibilities of theater and engaging in performance for any child with a yearning to act, sing, paint, or dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great book for any child. It has great pictures that are fun to look at and enjoy reading. I bought this for my neice and she loves the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!
My oldest daughter (4) and I LOVED this book! The illustrations are powerful and the story is so fun it makes me want to buy a van and travel around putting on plays with my husband and two daughters!!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is an adorable book...
The other reviewer is correct in that there are many mistakes in the Italian and a few in the English. But you have to understand what is going on in the story.
The family in this story is an American family that goes to Italy for a year to perform.I get the feeling from the book that they are NOT Italian and are just trying to fumble their way through the language as best as they can.You have to remember that this is not an Italian language instructional guide. It's an autobiographical telling of a year of Ms. Potter's childhood. With that in mind, the other mistakes make sense too.I read the story again and found that the mistake the former reviewer mentions is contained in a section where young Giselle is writing in her journal. It is the writing of a child, hence the grammatical mistakes.
And the reviewer is also correct about there not being many captivating images of Italy, but I don't think Italy is supposed to be the star of the book.Ms. Potter wants us to learn from the lessons she learned as she traveled through that beautiful country. The most important lesson, I feel, is being able to support your family and find the joy in life even when things aren't going so well.
No, this isn't the book you should use if you are trying to teach Italian to your child, but if you just want a cute little book for your child to enjoy, this one will do just fine.My 2 daughters loved it - especially the thought of having a year off of school! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Poetry in MS
Just ordered this book over the summer, and plan to use it with my 7th grade students this school year. I like the focus on exploring meaning in poetry, not actually having students write poems (though that could easily be amended to these lessons). There is a nice variety of work here, from Gary Soto to Edgar Allen Poe. I think this book will help teachers read and discuss poetry with middle school students. The resources in the back of the book, including online sites and lists of anthologies, are especially helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars poetic simplicity
An interesting selection of poems each accompanied by a lesson.Lessons easily expanded upon and adapted for various ability levels.I especially appreciate the variety of poems and the fact that they are not typical. ... Read more

After doing very poorly on his law school entrance exam and almost dropping out during his first year as a law student, Chris Yianilos went on to graduate in the top 10 percent of his class. The Law School Breakthrough shows exactly how he did it-and how you can, too.Three years in law school convinced Chris that he could write the only book a budding lawyer needs before his LSAT entrance exam. The Law School Breakthrough can show even the most average student how to triumph over all the barriers to law school success-a crushing workload; the single winner-take-all exam system; the arrogance of most law school professors; the fierce, sometimes hysterical, competition from classmates. The Law School Breakthrough provides a comprehensive, holistic approach to surviving law school-both inside and outside the classroom. It contains proven techniques for overcoming every obstacle students are likely to face during the three most challenging years of their lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Success In and Out of the Classroom.
Like most incoming law students, I browsed the countless books on Amazon that claim to "show the way" in law school.I ended up buying and reading this book and Getting to Maybe. Both are quite helpful, but for different reasons. (Getting to Maybe is more exam focused; great book too, just a much more narrow focus).

I found this book quite helpful to read prior to staring class, as I was a student who really had no clue about how a class actually worked in law school, how to brief a case, how to outline etc.The author provided straightforward advice about how to do these things, and more importantly, why they are worth doing.

The author covers most of the basics needed to succeed in the first semester (and following semesters).Examples and stories abound from the author's own experience in law school, and give you an accurate preview of what you'll probably experience too (I know my experiences have been quite similar).

What I probably liked best is that the book is honest and realistic, yet also optimistic and looks beyond the law school universe. The author is honest that good grades are important and realistic that it will take hard work to get there. With that said, the author repeatably emphasizes that hard work, good grades and law school is not all there is to life.Life will go on if you get a bad grade, and 99% of the world (including most people you know) could care less about what goes on in law school. Its certainly easy to get caught up in the law school universe (and many do), but I think the author is on point in that it is easier to both succeed and enjoy life if you do not let it consume you.

I'd recommend this book to any incoming 1L - read it the summer before your first semester, and it will set you up well for success in and outside the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jump start your law school success with this book!
As second year law student, I highly recommend this book to all entering first year students. You will be leaps and bounds beyond by reading this book and have the potential to be at the top of your class if you implement the book's recommendations.Unlike other law school guides, this book is not full of hype, rather this book provides an excellent framework to how approach law school and succeed.Do not waste your money and time on other books. This book is the one book that will put you on the road to be at the top of your first year class. As any law student will tell you, your first year success is critical, and this book provides wonderful and practical ways to make the year a great one!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
I bought this book after my first semester, hoping it would be some help.It was pretty much stuff I already knew.It might be helpful for someone who has never briefed a case before, but if you've been in class a week or more, this book probably won't be very useful. The rest can be summed up by: do your homework.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Law School
This book is a must have for anyone attending law school.I read the book before law school and still find myself referring back to it.The author provides a realistic look into the daily life of a law student. Moreover, the conversational style makes it an easy and enjoyable read.

The author also provides excellent tips for succeeding in the classroom. From briefing cases to taking exams, there are numerous practice problems so that the reader can experience applying the principles of the book outside the pressure of the classroom.

Again, I highly recommend this book to anyone in law school.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author spends more time bragging than giving advice.
This was one of many books i bought as part of my summer reading before beginning law school. Right away i noticed that the author of this book loved to talk about himself. He spends a lot of time explaining how well he did at every stage then over-exaggerates how difficult it will be for you to accomplish the same. You can easily identify the authors ego in his writing; I laughed out loud when I read about his "one and only" time he was unable to answer a professor's question and how HORRIBLY embarrassing it was for him. I never did finish this book because I found others (like Law School Confidential which is written by multiple authors!) to be more realistic, less horrific, and full of advice. ... Read more

We often hear how the elementary schools need to be reformed; very rarely does the reform reach the high school level. Most people think it's too late by then. This book encourages change, and the authors are speaking from experience, not from a textbook. Daniels, et.al., have outlined 11 essentials for running an effective secondary school that focus on students and learning. What a novel idea! They're simple ideas, but their implementation is vital. Product Description
Two major reform strategies dominate the education reform debate in Arizona: first, the expansion of public school early childhood education, and second, the expansion of parental choice in education. Preschool enthusiasts say that preschool results in higher student achievement. In her second State of the State address, Arizona governor Janet Napolitano asserted:

"The data is simply overwhelming that the combination of quality childcare and full-day kindergarten will reap rewards many times the financial investment we make now. Our children will be better prepared to learn, they will be less likely to drop out of high school, and they will have higher academic achievement if we start them off on a stronger footing."

School choice supporters believe that when schools have to compete for students, student achievement improves, even for students remaining in the public school system.

Arizona policymakers have tried both strategies in recent years, making it possible to empirically examine how successful the strategies have been. Examining test score data from Pima County elementary schools and early education survey data from school districts across Arizona, this study evaluates the relative efficacy of the preschool and school choice strategies.

The data show that students in schools with all-day kindergarten programs have statistically significant higher 3rd-grade test scores, but there is no impact on 5th-grade scores. This finding is consistent with previous research. Schools facing significant competition for students, whether through public or private options, demonstrate significant test score gains.

The findings of this empirical analysis demonstrate that early childhood education expansion is an expensive reform that delivers only transitory benefits. School choice uses resources more efficiently and delivers improved academic achievement. ... Read more
