Great Biography of Epic Institutions (CHS & Moran)
Reading this book brought with it a wave of fond memories of my four years at CHS.Though friendships have dwindled through the years, as the Alma Mater told us students that they would, these were four of the most significant and influential of my life.

I was shocked when a former CHS classmate emailed me to say "Hey, did you hear Mr. Moran has a book out?"I didn't know what to expect.You see, Mr. Moran was one of those teachers who students feared.They feared him because they knew that the next year of their life would require hard work and dedication to earn a passing grade.They also feared him because they knew that they would learn something.I guess I was pretty stupid in high school because I feared him so much that I demanded of the principal that I have him for a second year of English (a request that was summarily approved).

The only criticism that I have would be that the book was too short.I would have loved for it to be longer so that it could go into more of the history of the school, have more of his teaching antics (e.g., rolling dice to decide who he called on for "an inquisition", "grading" papers by seeing which one landed at the bottom of the stairs first, etc.), and definitely have more Father Tribou stories.

Thank you, Mr. Moran, for the impact you had on my life, and the lives of so many others.Proudly we speak *your* name as well.

Mr. Moran writes a book every CHS grad should read.
Having graduated from Catholic High, I was intrigued by the stories that Mr. Moran told about the old school building on State Street.The book is made up of stories from several different time periods, and it is amazing to see how similar boys from the 1960s are with boys from the 2000s.Anyone who went to the Mount or Catholic should definitely read it, as well as anyone who has ever had any contact with CHS.

In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Arkansas governor Orval Faubus viewed the desegregation of Little Rock Central High through very different lenses. The president worried that displays of rampant racism tarnished the nation's reputation as a global power and undermined efforts to thwart the spread of communism. The governor sided with his segregationist constituents to guarantee his political survival. For the nine teenagers caught in the middle, Central High was a cauldron of racial tension. These students represented the black and moderate-white community's desire for social justice. Disappointing
Overall, I am very disappointed with this book.I will be teaching a high school creative writing class and I was looking for books that would guide me.The activities are very basic - they would probably work better for elementary and junior high students.The main source of disappointment is the lack of substantial content.The book is only 69 pages (with a lot of blank space on each page).I would have been happy to spend $3-4 on this, but $18 seems like a complete rip off. ... Racial Tolerance Is A Key Theme in "Good Ground..."
In "The Good Ground of Central High," author George Cate shares the life lessons he learned from a tough, old coach in the days just before his high school became famous during the desegregation crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957.
One of those lessons had to do with racial tolerance and coach Wilson Matthews taught it to the entire student body. An African-American man named Riley "Doc" Johns was the team trainer and an "unofficial" member of the coaching staff. He often acted as a mentor to the boys on Central's all-white team, which for decades was one of the country's top football programs.
Coach Matthews demanded that all of Central's students treat Johns with the same respect they showed for other adults. Given this atmosphere of racial tolerance, Cate writes that he later was shocked to learn about the problems at Central High in 1957 when federal troops entered Little Rock to enforce integration at the school. ... Very intelligent book, gives a detailed insight into the shooters minds and explains why and how to prevent. A must read for anyone with children.

This book, gives a new perspective on school shootings.The author creates a new theory behind the roots of these happenings.It gives the background, accounts of students, faculty, community officials, and community members perspectives to these shootings as well.Overall, it helps the reader to put school shootings into perspective.

This book stands alone...
Since 2004, there have been over 1,000 books written on bullying and interventions---most prompted by the rash of school shootings in the late 1990's.Newman's book stands alone for it's clairty and genuine contribution to understanding this complex issue.Having read many texts on this topic, this is by far the one I would recommend to my colleagues.

A useful, if flawed, read
There is much to recommend this book.It provides a well-researched explanation for the ultimate causes of rampage school shootings.The book does an excellent job of refuting the myth that these tragedies have a simplistic explanation.The authors make a very compelling case that Columbine-style school shootings happen only when a tragic combination of necessary-but-not-sufficient factors are present.

Unfortunately, the book falters when it comes to providing practical strategies for the prevention of rampage school shootings.For example, the authors repeatedly acknowledge bullying and teasing as major causative factors that push some youths toward committing these tragic attacks.As the authors note, most of the shooters were bullied severely -- some almost to the point of torture.

Given that, one would have expected the book to devote a good amount of space to prevention of bullying in schools. Unfortunately, the book devotes less than two pages devoted to a discussion of ways to prevent bullying and other forms of harassment in schools.Teenage bullies, of course, are not stupid -- nearly all bullying takes place out of the view of teachers and school administrators.Much research has shown that teachers and administrators tend to dramatically underestimate the size of this problem, simply because they see only a small percentage of the harassment that actually occurs. The book neglects this point almost entirely, which is very unfortunate because there are a number of strategies that have been shown to be effective and that are fairly easy for school systems to implement.

Similarly, the book devotes much space to the widespread availability of guns as a factor, yet offers precious little in the way of suggestions for what to do to prevent desperately disturbed teenagers from gaining access to them.

Given that, I would strongly recommend the book for understanding the causes of these tragedies.Just don't expect much in the way of practical suggestions for prevention.

Understanding desegregation across the divide of race
In this excellent book, Beth Roy examines the lives of whites and blacks who attended Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1958 - the tumultuous year of Central High's desegregation.Drawing on life histories with former high school students, Roy paints a complicated and layered picture of understanding, and more importantly, misunderstanding between whites and blacks across time - the interviews were done 30 years later - and across racial difference.I use this book in course I teach on the history of affirmative action in 20th Century America - and my undergraduate students respond strongly to this book.Some are quite surprised by the white students misperceptions about the black students who came to Central High and their seeming indifference to the experiences of black students.Others are upset, even angry by this indifference.And, still others are embarassed as they read their own feelings into the life histories of the participants.It is also terrific for teaching about the dilemma of memory in reconstructing life histories.Roy demonstrates how the people she interviewed often unwittingly reconstruct their stories of the past to fit present day narratives and understandings or race, race relations, and "white victimization."Rather than dismiss their accounts as "untrue," however, she uses these examples to understand why her interviewees tell stories that diverge from actual accounts written at the time of desegregation.In all, this is a terrific book and a terrific read.I highly recommend it.

A Change is Gonna Come
Those seriously interested in eliminating racism and making our society representative of it's famous constitutional creed, must read Beth Roy's "Bitters in the Honey." Roy interviews several adults, black andwhite, who were students at Central High School-Little Rock, Ark. duringthe school desegration of 1957-58. Roy clearly points out how thepriviledged white students perceived the move towards equality asinfringing on their rights, thus making them victims. While the nine blackstudents-the true victims-, the martyrs for positive change, had towithstand constant harassment and acts of violence by angry white students.Even more pathetic, Roy describes how the white students blame themonumental court decision for them not reaching their expected goals inlife. Blame, responsibility, guilt,denial are common themes expressed bythe white adults, who unknowingly had the power to affect change that wouldin turn, empower everyone. This book should be on the Oprah Book List,because until serious discussion about race relations is undertaken betweenpeople, there will continue to be two victims: the hater and the hated.
