He is credited with the earliest known historiographical work on the history of Armenia, but was also a poet, or hymn writer, and a grammarian. Although other Armenians, such as Agatangeghos, had written histories of Armenia, Movses' work holds particular significance because it contains unique material on the old oral traditions in Armenia during its pagan era and, more important, traces Armenian history from Movses' day to its origins. For this, he is considered to be the "father of Armenian history" (patmahayr), and is sometimes referred to as the "Armenian Herodotus." Movses identified himself as a young disciple of Saint Mesrop and was recognized by the Armenian Apostolic Church as one of the Holy Translators, although many scholars have noted internal discrepancies in his work which lead them to assign later dates (see below). The Kingdom of Armenia has a series of repeated struggles for independence from Persia or Rome, followed by renewed conquests into either of the neighboring empires. In modern times, Armenia again situated between two empires, this time the Ottoman Empire vs. the Russian Empire. Depiction of Vartan and his men during the Battle of VartanantzAn Armenian Hellenistic state was founded in 190 BC and ruled by the Artaxiad Dynasty. At the height of its power, Greater Armenia spread over parts of what is today the Caucasus, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. After its expansion under the leadership of Tigranes II, it confronted the Republic of Rome. Although it briefly lost its independence, it reaffirmed itself in the region with the Arsacid Dynasty of Armenia.
