3-0 out of 5 stars Quite nice. Great massage section.
I found this book at a wharehouse club in my area and picked it up on a whim after leafing through a few pages. It turned out to be quite a gem.

The beginning section on aromatherapy is by no means allencompassing, but it's a great starting point for the beginner. The sectionon massage is the absolute BEST. It covers all sections of the body andillustrates Japanese Shiatsu and reflexology as well as the moretraditional european method. The yoga section covers a wide range ofpostures, and even has a nice little 10 week program for the reader tofollow, by the end of which one will have the full repertoire of poses inhis/her arsenal.

The entire book consists of color photos, and eachpicture is accompanied by a caption that won't leave you guessing. Thisbook does not offer an in depth study of any of the therapies within, butit is a worthy additon to the library of someone learning about or deeplyinvolved in alternative therapies.

Just a side note: I found it for lessthan the price advertised so keep your eyes peeled for a bargain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must have!
I never leave town without this book.Anytime I have an ailiement I pull out this book first.I have learned so much about the body and the immune system just from this book.I have plastic tabs on all the chapters for easy refrence.I also use this book in conjunction with, "20,000 Secrets of Tea, The Most Effective Way To Benefit From Nature's Healing Herbs" by Victoria Zak. 3-0 out of 5 stars Aromatherapy vs. Perfumery
One of my biggest pet peaves is when I start reading a book and find out that the book has more of an agenda than it is informative. This book should be called "Aromatherapy vs. Perfumery" or "How industries are using and testing synthetic fragrances with the intent of behavioral control."I already know about all that.I was more interested "using [true] essential oils for physical and emotional well-being," as the cover of the book states.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scent and Psyche brought together in a in-depth presentation
I most sincerely recommend this work to anyone interested in learning more about the magic of Aromas! Not only do the co-athors Peter and Kate Damian discuss the various attributes of many scents, they also tread deep into the inner workings of the human olfactory system. The research they havegathered is worthy of any major medical journal in both content and depth.I personally am involved in various research in the field of the effects ofaromas on the human condition and found their book insightful and quiteoriginal.

The writting style is simple to follow and filled with thosewonderful little phrases that we can carry with us to any social function.I myself have been quoting my favorites parts on quite a regularbasis!

Sincerely, if you are interested in Aromatherapy, Incense,Perfume, or even just curious as to how scents have such a powerfulresponse in us as human beings, then I whole heartedly suggest you readthis text!

Each individual card in this deck identifies a specific fragrance while the flip side of the card explains its healing and restorative benefits and gives the reader specific suggestions for using it to improve health, mood, and home. Aromatherapy is the practice of using specific scents and fragrance for health and well-being and is often used to relieve pain, care for the skin, alleviate tension and fatigue, and invigorate the entire body. Whether aromatherapy oils are inhaled, added to the bath, massaged into skin, or diffused to scent an entire room, studies have shown that scent does have the power to affect mood, alleviate fatigue, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like her 10 minute feng shui books
So I thought I would give her aromatherapy cards a try. It has quite a few scents. It is to early to really rate it.I've only read a few of the cards. But I guess it should be good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misinformtion in a pretty package
Don't be fooled by the pretty package and marketing hype. The information is not a reflection of true aromatherapy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerously ignorant and misguided.
It is obvious the publisher wanted to put out an attractive card deck on the topic of Aromatherapy. It is a pity that he didn't find an author with at least a minimal knowledge of aromatherapy and essential oils.I knew we were in trouble when I saw cards for "Magnolia" and "Hyacinth".There ARE no essential oils produced from either Blossom. The is no natural Hyacinth scent. The 50 botanicals mentioned to not include latin species name or plant part. The card says "Anise" but the text mentions Star Anise, two very different oils. That's card number one.

Card # 3... Coriander.Coriander essential oil is distilled from the dried seed. The picture on the card is of the leafy foliage ... otherwise known as Cilantro.Same plant, differerent plant part, and vastly different effects.Since the author discussed "Taken internally it can.." it's hard to tell which she is referring to.

Under the "aromatherapy uses" of more than half of the essential oils listed she indicates internal use, with no guidelines, suggested dosages, or safety warnings. She very occasionally mentions diluting one of the described oils in lotion or massage oil, giving the impression that all others may safely be used undiluted.

Clove Oil:"The oil can also be applied to the skin to treat acne, burns , cuts, and ulcerous wounds."Excuse me?Not by any sensible person.

Violet:Beautiful picture of violet blossoms. Discussion of "the delicate scent of Violet Essential Oil"...except that there is no such a thing. There is an absolute, solvent extracted from Violet LEAVES...very green scented with a faintly floral dry down, but no natural Violet Essential Oil.

She talks of ingesting Lemon Verbena and Melissa Essential oils, Thyme oil (no mention of which Chemotype) Marjoram (wild or sweet Marjoram? we don't know.)

She writes of Balsam Essential oil..with a picture of an evergreen branch with green baby cones...perhaps Balsam Fir but I don't think so. She mentions "several varieties..Canadian Balsam, Pruvian Balsam, Tolu Balsam"....I think by Canadian Balsam she is referring to Balsam Fir, a conifer.Whichever, she gives the same recommendations for all Balsam oils... "Put a drop of Balsam Oil on your tongue to remedy laryngitis or a sore throat."Not this throat, thank you!

Orange Blossom Oil (does she mean Neroli, or Orange Blossom Absolute?) "When ingested, it balances stomach and digestive upsets"...

Bergamot Oil is recoommended as a skin tonic for acne, cold sores, eczema, psoriasis and boils. The card does not mention EITHER the need to dilute, or the fact that cold pressed bergamot is one of the worst photosensitizers.Just blythely suggests applying the oil to remedy any of the above conditions.Yes, a third degree sunburn could certainly aid acne or eczema...

Carnation Oil "Use carnation oil and carnation absolute externally only, don't ingest this botanical."Wonderful suggestion, since there is NO carnation essential oil.

These are just a few of the dangerous inaccuracies in this set of cards. I have referred to perhaps 10 out of 50. The others are no better. PLEASE do yourself a favor and do not buy these. If you've bought them or been given them, decorate your wall with the truly attractive (although sometimes mislabled) pictures. They are the only part of the set worth having. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I keep this book near my essential oil stash!
I have owned this book for a couple of years and find myself using it as my main essential oil reference. It is said when the student is ready the teacher appears. Because this book is actually the combined work of many teachers it seems this student (me) happens upon just the right intriguing oil blend at just the right time on an almost weekly basis.
One article entitled the Medicine Tin of Five Essential Oils was so helpful it inspired me to create my own seasonal gift pack which includes the involved oils.My friends it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Voices of Aromatherapy
Bound to become a timeless classic in the field of aromatherapy The World of Aromatherapy is a beautiful treasure to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE WORLD OF AROMATHERAPY/jeanne rose

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book you need to practice aromatherapy
I have many aromatherapy books and none compare to this one.Larissa is very clear and concise in her application of aromatherapy principles at presents her ideas in an easy to follow fashion. This book is good for beginners, but is by no means arbitrary reading or education for those more advanced in this arena. If you are looking to learn more about this field you should start here because this book will give you a strong sense of what aromatherapy is used for and decode it's mysteries (especially for the beginner). This is my absolute favorite aromatherapy book, and if I could only use one, it would be this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best
Larissa Jones is a master aromatherapist and her book is remarkable in its simplicity and flow. She not only includes great information about the key uses for each essence but also shows which combinations work well. She brings in the emotional qualities that assist in the total balancing of the body. This book is fun and would be my first choice if you need to pick only one book. You will feel as if you can begin right away and continue to learn as your skill improves.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this book all the time...
This is the first book I turn to when looking for aromatherapy remedies.Usually, I need no other. Her information is precise and concise, which makes it easy to follow and remember. Also, she lists uses for each essential oil and what mixes well with it.If you ever have a chance to see her in person, do it, it's well worth any price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where Can You Find A Better Basic Aromatherapy Book?
Larissa Jones explains the history, the vocabulary, and the chemical mechanisms of how aromatherapy works in a style that is easy for the beginner to comprehend without insulting the educated intelligence. Her enthusiasm for the health benefits of essential oils shines through as she lovingly explains how aromatherapy can ease many health challenges and bring relief to the sufferer of a variety of conditions. Her integrity is displayed by her honest expressions of not only the scientifically verifiable benefits of aromatherapy, but its limitations and cautions against unwise use of the essential oils. If you are a beginner looking for a delightful, informative, enthusiastic guide to the wonderful world of aromatherapy, by someone who both loves the art AND who knows what she is talking about, this is the only book that fits the bill! Product Description
You will love this fresh approach to understanding your soul's gifts through connecting to your natural spiritual abilities. Tapping into the conscious awareness of your spiritual power and the individual energy that governs your life, you have the opportunity to identify and realize your full potential. The gift of aromatherapy is the ability to draw on the essential oils of life to reinforce the process of emotional release and spiritual enlightenment. Your method might be religion, western medicine, psychology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, alternative approaches, or energy healing. The life force energy of the essential oils provides a powerful means for carrying smell to the emotional brain and frequency to the energy healing centers of the body, creating a synergy with all healing modalities, such that the result is optimized with far reaching results.Essential oils facilitate the journey toward heightened intuition by opening the channels to the unconscious mind and bringing about conscious awareness-activating your intuition helps you to feel better about yourself. Once you have correlated your emotions with energy center imbalances, the essential oil frequencies transmute negative energy while opening opportunities for harmony and balance.Part 1 of this book deepens your knowledge of the power of aromatherapy, details how to tune into your soul consciousness, and provides answers to balancing your chakras with essential oils. Part 2 provides a series of techniques using inhalation and topical application of essential oils for supporting spiritual and emotional empowerment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brand New Techniques for Both Right-Brain and Left-Brain People
Because there are numerous aromatherapy books on the market and a number of them deal with emotional and spiritual aspects, why consider adding another to your collection?Because this one (1) presents already-known information from a fresh perspective and (2) provides the reader with some NEWLY-DISCOVERED TECHNIQUES of using essential oils for dealing with emotional and spiritual issues.

The book is divided into three main sections - getting the reader up to speed, the special techniques, and the appendix; in other words, reading, doing, and reference.

For those who are eager to bypass the 64 pages of reading in Part 1 and get on with the new techniques in Part 2 as quickly as possible, let me assure you that the first section also contains new techniques.Three of them are as follows:

1. A way to balance the chakras through using a method called Harmonic Convergence.Specific essential oils are suggested for assistance in achieving this outcome.Whether you're new to the concept of chakras or are experienced in this area, you'll find fascinating new information in this section.

2. An auricular technique for balancing the chakras and a helpful diagram which makes it very clear.

3. A technique for more easily tuning into your intuitive senses.

Part 2 contains six AromaMethods or essential oil techniques. Some have been adapted and some have been newly created by the author.Clear, step-by-step instructions are provided for each technique.

Rather than having the reader flip forward in the book to find an illustration where it was originally presented or flip back to the index, where all the illustrations are grouped together, the author has placed small versions of them in the margins next to where they are used during each technique. These two-inch margins make it easy to include your own notes and ideas.

Here is a list of the six techniques presented in Part 2.

1.Meditation.This includes essential oils that could be used before, during, and after the meditation. It also incorporates breathing, affirmations, and the author's example of how she calls upon her spirit guides during this process.

2.Connecting to Your Sacred Space. When you're too busy to meditate and have only a few minutes to connect to your sacred space, this new technique may be helpful. It can be done in a traditional meditation setting or even at a desk at work. What does it require?A few quiet moments, a few essential oils, and your intention.

3.Regain Your Power with Present Time. This is another new technique created by the author for herself, and now readers everywhere can use it when they need a break from fretting about the past or worrying about the future.Once again, essential oils are used and diagrams guide the reader through the process of getting into the "now."

4.Healing Bath Ritual. When certain emotions are bothering you and you've decided that it is time to let them go, this is a very useful technique to consider. The first time through, the author suggests that the reader follow her outline exactly as it is presented; after that, modify it intuitively. The mental part of this technique bears resemblance to certain aspects of Ho'oponopono.

5.Essential Oils for Your Highest Good.If you prefer relying on your logical (as opposed to intuitive) brain, you're going to enjoy this technique. What isrequired is (1) an intention, (2) essential oils for this intention, and (3) an Essential Oils Desk Reference for insight on exactly where to place the oils and how to use them. All of this is accomplished in a very left-brained sequence.

6.Emotional Clearing. This is for those who are ready to release emotional baggage! The technique is longer than the others presented in this book, but there's an easy-to-follow, two-page summary at the end.In ancient times, the Egyptians employed a similar technique, and in modern times, D. Gary Young has adapted it as a means of cleansing the body, mind, and spirit. Also included in this section is a documented case of this technique as successfully performed on an animal!

Although this book focuses on the emotional and spiritual, one of my favorite parts deals with the physical. In the introduction, where the author shares her journey that led to the writing of this book, she includes before and after photos of her live blood cell analysis. When she arrived at the Nova Vita Clinic in Ecuador, her blood cells were clumped together.Three and a half weeks later, these cells were floating freely.

Could these two photos be a metaphor for what happened in her body, mind, and spirit while in Ecuador? What we know is that the author went to Ecuador in a wheel chair, and through following the recommended protocols while there, she returned to the United States as a new and healthy person.

True health is more than just physical. For the physical, the primary guide for an increasingly large segment of the essential-oils-using population is the Essential Oils Desk Reference. For the emotional and spiritual, I would like to recommend highly Judy Jehn's new book, Aromatherapy for the Soul: Spiritual and Emotional Empowerment with Essential Oils.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent and comprehensive source
i love this book.if you are interested in finding out how to scent anything, be it your body, hair, skin, lotions, bath oils, or your living room -- this book is a great place to start. It is a marvelous introduction to aromatherapy focussing on teaching the basic principles you will need to understand in order to create your own blends. The book also lists a mulititude of excellent sample blends and imparts a wealth of knowledge on the essential oils and how to use them effectively.there's something in here for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
I love the idea of using entirely natural substances with many proven benefits for mind, body and soul, to make perfumes. This book is a pretty decent introduction. There are numerous perfume recipies which encouragecreativity and experimentation. The book is clear, serves its purpose andis clearly based on a lot of experience about combining scents. It getsfour stars rather than five because it is a little modest in its aims - itdoesn't use any of the exotic oils to make perfumes - and a little sparseon explaining the real magic of essential oils -ie that they areextraordinary complex substances that work on a physical, emotional andspiritual realm simultaneously. For books that do wonderful justice toessential oils see Valerie Wormwood's Fragrant Mind and Fragrant Heavens. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My Wife Really Loves This Thing
My wife is big into the aromatherapy essential oils stones things like that. She's taken courses on it, she talks about it with their friends, and she reads about them on the Internet. I wanted to be nice to her so I got her this book as a surprise. She loves it.

The book covers a lot of stuff. It's got some history of different routes and things so information about aromatherapy and a herbalism. The stuff she found more interesting though is it also tells about the body and actions and applications for the oil basically how whales work what they do to different parts of the body and how they can affect things. Later in the book it shows how to use them at home for things such as massage, skin oils and lotions, hair care, etc. I personally enjoy the massage aspect. The book also teaches about creative blending of the oils which she really enjoyed. She's been mixing different ones according to the book and having a great time doing.

At 194 pages, this book is a great buy for somebody who likes essential oils aromatherapy and such. I don't want to mislead you though, this isn't like a paperback book on aromatherapy. The portions I mentioned before that she liked reading are only about 38 pages. The rest of the book just tells about the different types of oil. Essentially, you'll see a family, synonyms, general description, distribution, herbal/folk tradition, actions, extraction (how the oil is obtained), characteristics, principal constitutes (chemical makeup), safety data, home applications, and other uses for each oil. The book is really more of a reference material than a book for beginners. There are a few pictures, but they're just drawings and the not all that interesting; I don't want to give the impression that they don't break up the text a little bit and some of them are actually useful diagrams or representations of the source plant, but were not talking about full-color pictures of everything. I kind of wish there were more diagrams a more different plants, but maybe that would've made the book too long. Anyway, good book and I suggested if you're already into oils otherwise start off with a different book and come back to this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars the encyclopaedia of essential oils
I have the repint of this book ( published in Great Britain in 1992) and as a certified Aromatherapist and Reflexologist have found this book very helpfull. I have not seen the new one so I can't say about it. The older one (1992)was for someone that has experience with the oils and wanted a quick guide for Family, Actions, anf Principal Constituents of the oils. This is a book for someone that is wanting to go beond the every day use of Aromatherapy

2-0 out of 5 stars Elementary, good for pictures. Not as advanced as Worwood.
The research ability of this book is not set up as well as some. The information also is not as advanced or as extensive as some other authors. My preference would be Worwood over Lawless. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes but lacks essential information
Overall, I consider this a good book with easy to follow recipes. However, I feel that she didn't include all the information that she should have.

She uses essential oils in many of the recipes, but she never mentions any safety data. For instance, she includes many citrus oils without mentioning that they are phototoxic.

She gives a brief description of each of the ingredients that she uses throughout the book. However, although she uses a number of different emulsifiers, she doesn't bother to explain why one may be better than another in a specific recipe, or how to substitute one emulsifier for another in a recipe. Since some of the ingredients are hard to find, this would be nice to know. In addition, one emulsifier she uses is an alpha hydroxy acid which she includes in most of her lotion and cream recipes. I choose not to use alpha hydroxy acids and would love to know how to make the recipes without that ingredient.

There are not as many recipes in this book as it first appears. Many recipes are, "take the basic recipe from chapter 3 and add the following essential oils..."

While I'm glad I bought this book, I do feel that it's going to take some additional research and experimentation before I'm able to use the recipes for my own personal use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of its type.
A gorgeous book written by a dedicated professional. Although some of the luxury-class packaging shown is unaffordable for most people, the products themselves are impeccable. They're neither inexpensive norquickie/craft-style projects. If you want to make high-end natural skincareitems, this book is essential.

This is a nice book, small in size.Would be good to give as a gift.It is not a bible. It doesn't go into great detail about anything. It gives some nice recipes etc.Doesn't explain properties of oils.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the aromatherapy student
I am currently studying aromatherapy and am constantly on the look out for good reference books to add to my library. This is one of my favorites. I have not read it through entirely but the parts I have read have been very informative. I highly recommend this to an aromatherapist, a student of aromatherapy or someone with aromatherapy knowledge. This is not a book for someone who wants to teach themselves aromatherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource
Aromatherapy for Health Professionals (Price, Aromatherapy for Health Professionals)

A really great book if you want to learn more about aromatherapy from its science to practical application. It is well written and the book has been designed for easy reference on a regular basis. It has handy features like:
* A `General properties of essential oils' table for when you want to quickly look up an essential oil;
* An `Indications for uses of essential oils' table to find suitable oils for common conditions;
* A 90 page appendix section outlining the constituents, properties, indications and observations of key essential oils used for therapeutic application;
* Tables that group oils by properties like antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, digestive and hormonal properties which makes comparison easy to check if your stock is adequate for the intended condition or purpose or if you do need to buy another essential oil; and
* Case studies that outline conditions that have been treated with essential oils and complimentary interventions.

I use this book frequently because it is so comprehensive in terms of how to safely use essential oils. For example, I've made an all natural insect repellent that works perfectly, treated some non life threatening ailments and created home cleaning products to replace commercial ones based on the information provided in the book about the properties and applications of essential oils.

I would highly recommend this as a must have resource in your aromatherapy library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I found "Aromatherapy for Health Professionals" tremendously interesting. It offered information on practical application with a focus on healing while explaining the science (what we know of it, anyway) behind why essential oils work the way they do.

It was basically a medical textbook and often used medical terms. Most of the terms were defined in the glossary in the back, but their meaning was usually obvious from or defined in the text, so you don't have to have medical training to understand this book.

The book included information on tests and case studies in which essential oils were used to treat medical conditions (both for physical healing and to calm or lift the mood).I also gained an understanding of why the cautions given in other aromatheraphy books where given so I now feel confident that I can use essential oils effectively and safely. The charts on lethal doses (for ingested and topical) for a number of common essential oils were also tremendously reassuring.

Most of the book (Sections 1 and 2) was for a general audience and wasn't specific to the UK. Section 3 was more about using essential oils for specific problems (in the critical care unit or a nursing home, etc.) in the UK medical setting, but there was still a lot that was applicable to anyone using essential oils. Section 4 was short, but got very specific about practicing aromatheraphy in a medical setting in the UK and then worldwide.

The Appendix contained useful charts and lists showing which essential oils are effective in treating which problems. It also listed safety information, like which essential oils can be toxic in high dosages or have potentially unwanted side-effects, like irritating the skin. Finally, it listed about one hundred essential oils, their chemical content, what actions they cause and what they are good at treating, and safety information specific to that oil as well as observations about its use taken from case studies, etc.

If you're really into using essential oils and enjoy making up your own blends, especially for health problems, I'd highly recommend this book as a wonderful resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Done Reference
Well-done reference guide with good cross-referenceing of indications, oils, contraindications, etc. There are a few oils missing from the detailed reference area, but overall this is my favorite book on the subject - and worth the cost. Nice clinical study citations, too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars informative
ok well apparantly the first feedback i left was a neutral feedback. my mistake. This book may be small but its very informative, some of the E.O's are hard to come by or even hard to find, but i found the recipes to be very useful, there are a few that i am going to try out. I recieved the book well within the date it was supposed to arrive very fast delivery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware to anyone new to aromatherapy
The recipes in this book are careless at best. The amounts of essential oils recommended in comparison to base oils are extremely excessive. And the pet formulas are even more horrifying, especially when you take into consideration the sensitivity of an animal's skin. I have been studying herbs and oils for 8 years now, and I know that a true essential oil is a concentrated form of a plants essence. That means it takes VERY LITTLE essential oil to accomplish a lot. The waste encouraged by these recipes is only one thing to be worried about. I'd be afraid to recommend any recipe in this book as is. I'd personally say PLEASE, FOR YOUR OWN GOOD- just avoid this book. It's safer for everyone that way.

I would like to mention one other thing. I only paid $1.50 (+ $4 for s&h)and just recently got this book from this very website so some of the recent prices I've seen listed must be some kind of sick joke.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Giant Encyclopedia of Aromatherapy
Very informative little book. It is small (height) but it makes up for it in the mass of information it has within it's pages. The Little Giant Encyclopedia of Aromatherapy is a wonderful little book to have, and so easy to toss in your purse for extended reading while waiting at theDoctors office or at the kids baseball games.. :) We found it to be reallywell written, very informative, and easy to read. It contains so much onaromatherapy that you almost don't need to buy any other books. ... Read more
