Aromatherapy for the Emotions is the complete guide to using nature's essential oils to treat negative emotional states, and enhance positive emotions. The book contains 51 essential oil profiles according to their effects on emotional states, over 45 recipes for massage oil blends, over 45 recipes for bath blends and over 180 recipes for the oil burner all designed for individual emotional states (e.g. grief, fear, anger, anxiety, and heartbreak). The book also has a detailed section on choosing oils according to personality, and also a section devoted to aromatherapy's effects on the body's energy system and also explains how blockages in the energy system can occur due to prolonged negative emotional states. 5-0 out of 5 stars WaveLengths Natural Health review.
WaveLengths Natural Health had this to say about "Aromatherapy for the Emotions";
"Kylie Thompson writes a book about using aromatherapy for emotions that is personal and conversational. She introduces her background and experiences with aromatherapy, and it is clear from the first page that the author is quite intuitive and very heartfelt.
Aromatherapy for the Emotions highlights ways to use aromatherapy to help break emotional cycles and shift focus away from negative patterns..........Also included is a very interesting chapter on aromatherapy, the chakras, and the emotions. Thompson identifies oils according to a perfume note scale that she devised, and suggests specific essential oils for several different chakras, based on this scale. She also gives instructions for "chakra massage," either to stimulate or relax the chakra energy."

Excellent Essential Oil/ Aroma Therapy starter book.It pretty much covers the history, general concepts, blends and essential oils regardingaromatherapy!Gotta have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LIKE THIS BOOK!!!
I am still reading this book. I like the fact it offers a reflexology foot chart.

3-0 out of 5 stars I wish someone mentioned that it has nude photos in it!
This book has great content and beautiful picture, but no one has come out and mentioned that it does have nude photos in it.They are tastefully done, but since I purchased this for my office, and I have a very conservative clientel, this book would not be appropriate. So, I am dissappointed.I wouldn't have purchased it had I know.So beware. It really depends on what you want it for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delicasy For the Visual~Aroma~Authoring Artist!!
I feel that this book is a perfect treat for the ( i must say attention deficit, as I am a member).

The visual pictures keep the reader interested, as well as the wonderful history of perfumery! The visual text is modern, creative, colorful, and definitely has interest for every kind of reader, not to mention those who love or are interested in Aromatherapy!! I love the use of the shapes, photography, print, texture of the pages, as well as cover, and the content. It is very informative, gives Recipes and More!~Recipes for everything from bathing, to skin brushing. If you love Aromatherapy, color, and appreciate design elements, you will love this book-It is a piece of ART.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to your complimentary health library
Written in a contemporary style for ease of reading, this book immediately appeals through its intimately pocketed text, colourful fonts and superb graphics.Black and white photography add to the feeling of intimacy andmood.Title pages or those containing statements, quotes and key pointsare coloured for impact without "shouting". Visual analysisaside, the text is concise, accurate and well researched without being tootechnical. It's almost like the author is chatting to you about the wholeconcept of Aromatherapy over several large cups of coffee. Each chapterdiscusses its subject in detail without being too "heavy",successfully keeping the lay-reader interested.Chapter 3 examines 30individual essential oils, has accompanying pictures of each plant/seed sothe reader can make a visual connection with the origin. The descriptivetext creatively flows in various shapes rather than just plain left toright over the whole page. Also discussed are the merits of various carrieroils with accompanying graphics, enabling the reader to make a reasonablyinformed choice when purchasing for themselves. 1-0 out of 5 stars Highly unprofessional and ill-informed
If the name Tisserand is familiar, this is because of the famous aromatherapist Robert Tisserand. This book is written, not by him, but by his ex-wife, who was not herself a professional aromatherapist.

While anecdotal evidence can be very useful, Maggie Tisserand does not, sadly, have the requisite experience of a professional, and she advocates practices which qualified aromatherapists are not legally permitted to use in her country, such as the ingestion of essential oils. The most alarming example of this is when she tells a story about how a friend of hers contracted a sexually transmitted infection, and instead of telling her to go to a doctor (again, as professionals are legally obliged to do), she decided to try treating her with essential oils, including the internal use of sandalwood oil. This would be ineffective, and the delay in seeking professional treatment for an STI can have very serious effects including sterility.

Personal anecdotes can add charm to a book, but here they are profoundly irritating. We find out more about the Tisserands' failed marriage than we wanted to know, and the saga about her son's case of athlete's foot is at once melodramatic and boring. She does not provide profiles of individual oils or give much information when suggesting treatment of various ailments, and her knowledge of aromatherapy appears to be generally scanty.

Essential oils can be most helpful for home treatment of minor ailments if used safely and knowledgeably. There are plenty of good books out there written by reputable, qualified aromatherapists which can be of great use to the amateur. This is not one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
just what the doctor ordered. it has everything you need in just this one book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Effective Resource
I already own this book. You will have to spend a little money in the beginning getting a few oils. The recipes in here are simple and easy to follow, but most importantly effective. I used to think aromatherapy was only changing your mood based on scent-but who knew you can absorb the herbs, flowers, etc. through your skin to heal yourself from the inside out? I think this is a great reference that everyone should have on hand especially if you want to try to heal yourself naturally while smelling great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming book
This is a charming book on aromatherapy, written in a conversational style. You can imagine sitting with a friend in a tea-shop where she is telling you how this or that essential oil helped so and so with such and such a problem. This makes book very easy to read and the stories make it easy to remember what essential oil may be helpful for treating particular issue. While the focus of the book is on essential oils which are helpful for issues related to women such as pms, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, it covers many issue related to both sexes, such as weight loss, skin care, hair care, sexually transmitted diseases and general ailments like headache, stomachache, infections, etc.

At the end of the book there are about 16 pages with recipes related to issues mentioned previously in the book. This is a rather small book, perhaps more geared toward newcomers to aromatherapy, though the anecdotal stories make it for an informative and fun reading for anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide...but not always to aromatherapy
This was one of my very first aromatherapy books, because it is relatively inexpensive, and likewise relatively small and non-threatening.It has more the feel of a friendly guide than some obscure textbook.I still use it on a very regular basis, even though I've also added a number of more advanced books to my repertoire.

It is, on the whole, indeed very useful for women (and can be for men as well, of course!) It covers a wide range of women's-interest subjects, from home and body care, to pregnancy and infants ailments. The information for men is not as prevalent (as indicated in the title, of course) but many things that apply to women apply to men as well.

Most of the information is very thorough, but it can sometimes be hard to get to the 'meat' of what you are looking for. It is written in a very 'friendly', anecdotal style, which although easier reading than more 'technical' books, can make it difficult to find the key things you are looking for. The recommended essential oils are always in bold text, however, so that does at least partially negate this problem.

Another issue I had with it was the fact that some of the subjects she speaks about, there is NO essential oil information at all. This would not trouble me nearly as much, except for the fact that part of the title of the book is 'Guide to Essential Oils'. It is still good information, but if there is no essential oil information, I don't feel it belongs in an essential oil guide.

Despite these problems, however, I would definitely recommend it for any aromatherapy/essential oil library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Tiny!
I must say that I would give the delivery 5 stars I ord'd this book as well as the Aromatherapy titled book of the same publisher on Dec. 3rd and rec'd Dec. 4th and I did not choose overnight shipping....but I guess everyone has their "A" game on due to the holiday season! However, the reason for three stars is because the books are extremely small...they measure approx 4 3/8" x 5 3/8" - and as far as I could tell nothing in the books description made that clear. I am going to keep them bcse the information does look helpful, but I would have preferred a larger regular sized book...especially when using for educational purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover the ancient secrets of aromatherapy
Once you have chopped fresh rosemary and used it in cooking, you will never view herbs in the same way. Rosemary can also help improve mood. In "Secrets of Aromatherapy" you will find the botanical name, plant type, essential oil source, fragrance description, geographical origin, safety notes, properties, key use, other uses, psychological affect and what the essential oil of rosemary can be blended with.

Aromatherapy can be used to defuse emotion, mental and physical stress. Plant extracts contain many secrets of healing. The essential oils are extracted from the plants and can then be applied to promote relaxation or healing.

The essential oils can be found in the root (ginger), leaves (rosemary), fruit (oranges), flower (rose) or wood (sandalwood). As you journey into the amazing world of aromatherapy, you will discover favorite scents you will enjoy time after time.

The first chapter gives historical details, shows how the oils are extracted, explains oils and carrier oils, gives therapeutic guidelines, shows methods of use and gives the best ways to store oils. The second chapter features 30 key essential oils and 8 carrier oils for home use. A variety of charts shows health conditions and how to treat them with the oils.

Enter the world of: Lavender, patchouli, orange, neroli, cypress, rosemary, juniper, marjoram, eucalyptus, sandalwood, tea tree, peppermint, jasmine, clary sage, rose, mandarin, bergamont and ylang ylang. Jojoba, avocado, evening primrose, apricot kernel, grapeseed, sunflower and other oils are discussed in detail.

If you want to make your own "base cream," you will appreciate the recipes for mixtures containing beeswax, rose water and almond oil. These are great fun to make and I made a batch of peppermint cream one Christmas. We found little hand cream containers and gave them away as gifts.

The third chapter contains pictures and explanations for using the essential oil mixtures in massage. If you have never been to a massage, there is a whole section dedicated to explaining massage. After a long hard day, you might also enjoy creating a sanctuary for yourself with candles, music and a tub of warm water scented with your favorite oil.

There are many ideas on how you can use the oils throughout your home. I recently found a source for lavender wood furniture oil and it scents my whole home when I use it on furniture. The company I purchase my oils from is online. There are also many sources in the back of this book. Most health food stores now carry a whole line of essential oils. Look for blends of your favorite oils or for individual scents. Soon you will have a large collection and using essential oils will become as "essential" to your life as eating and sleeping. Please feel free to write to me if you need a source for purchasing essential oils.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recommended but NOT THIS edition
This is the first edition of the acclaimed book. You want to buy an updated one - The ILLUSTRATED encyclopedia of Essential oils by the same author. The difference is huge. Not only the Illustrated version has beautiful pictures of the plants, oils, ect but it also has tons of new, updated info that the first (this) edition misses. In other words, yes, this book is kind of the basis for the Illustrated edition but it is very pale in comparison to it. I would not waste your money on this one and buy the Illustrated one, which is a must have for anybody interested in aromatherapy as one of the best references/encyclopedias out there. Hope this review is helpful in your choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars 100% recommended - BUT...

As someone who has been actively involved in aromatherapy for almost ten years, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Lawless' acclaimed book. Based on its title and description, I was expecting a true encyclopedia - something like Worwood's The Fragrant Pharmacy, only more comprehensive and without specific recipes (I prefer it that way).

It IS an "encyclopedia": it contains the descriptions of 190 + EO (= essential oils), probably the most you'll ever see compiled in a single book.
They are arranged by alphabetical order, and the entries include a detailed description of the plant & of the oil, its geographic distribution, etc.
It also includes extensive botanical, chemical and safety data. They even include traditional uses of the plant from which the EO in question is extracted. (This, by the way, is not at all necessary - or even particularly useful - information, since EO can be extracted from parts of plants different to those that are used in traditional medicine.)

All this information would be fine (if slightly superfluous) - if the data concerning the specific properties of the EO discussed had been more extensive.
Of course Lawless duly lists all the actions (such as antipyretic, fungicidal, sedative, etc.) and "aromatherapy/home" uses. But the latter are listed in a "telegraphic" way that doesn't really appear to make any distinctions between the specific benefits of each EO. Of course many oils have very similar effects. But "similar" does not equal "the same".

A typical "Aromatherapy/Home Use" rubric (in this case, for spikenard) looks like this:

SKIN CARE: Allergies, inflammation, mature skin, rashes etc.
NERVOUS SYSTEM: Insomnia, nervous indigestion, migraine, stress and tenson.
OTHER USES: Little used these days, usually as substitute for valerian oil.

First of all, what is meant by "etc."?
Those already familiar with the EO in question would know - but those who aren't probably wouldn't.

In this particular case, BTW, the data also fail to mention the cardiotonic properties of the plant, which makes the OTHER USES rubric incomplete. (And by the way: I, for one, use spikenard A LOT!)
Surprisingly, the HERBAL/FOLK TRADITION also fails to mention its restorative effect on hair colour.

And this is just an example, picked at random.

I am really, really not nit-picking, and I hope my writing doesn't come across that way. I think Lawless' book is an extremely useful primer - and, yes, an "encyclopaedia", in a concise sort of way - that absolutely should find a place on the shelves of anyone interested in aromatherapy. There is no question about that. This book is 100% recommended. It is a very good introduction for beginners, and a very useful quick-reference book for those who already are experienced EO users.

I just find that it has perhaps too many general (somewhat superfluous) data on the one hand, and too little (specific) information on the other. I think it would be a very good idea to extend the "Herbal/Folk Tradition" and "Aromatherapy/Home Use" rubrics, to include perhaps some more anecdotal information (duly labeled as such) and somewhat more elaborate indications for the specific uses of each oil.

Then this book would truly become the unsurpassed treasure of aromatherapy data that it should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended standard text for Aromatherapy education
This book is recommended or required reading for almost every aromatherapy educational course, home use workshop, or personal study bibliography I have ever seen produced by leaders in the aromatherapy field in the United States, Canada, or Great Britain.

Application guidelines and chemistry overview are located at the front of the book.

To throughly learn a subject, whether by reading or class work, more than one source of information is necessary. I recommend at least 4 different sources of information and 7 is better. This text should definately be one of the 4 for aromatherapy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not practical for home users
