Product Description

Graduate Programs in Art History is an indispensable, comprehensive guide to schools that offer a Master's, doctoral, or related degree in art studies, including history of art and architecture, visual studies, museum and curatorial studies, arts administration, and library science. Compiled by the College Art Association, this easy-to-use directory includes over 260 schools and English-language academic programs in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and elsewhere worldwide.

Listings provide descriptions of special courses; numbers, names, and specializations of faculty; facilities such as libraries and labs; student opportunities for research and work; information on financial aid, fellowships, and assistantships; application requirements; and details on housing, health insurance, and other practical matters.

An index lists schools alphabetically and by state and country for quick reference. An introductory essay provides a detailed description of the elements of a program entry, including explanations of the various kinds of programs and degrees offered, placing the search and selection process in context.

1-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't afford to send it back!
This was supposed to be a NEW book. All the pages were stuck together on the bottom of the book and when I got them apart you can see a huge water stain. This was the first time I had ordered from Amazon and I will never do it again!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on fresh flower arranging.
Beautiful book on fresh flower arranging.Lots of information and lovely photographs. There is good technical information regarding the basics of arranging flowers in general. Her designs are beautiful but personally, not something I would want to reproduce. They are too edgy. She is obviously very talented. If you are looking for a book on silk flower arranging, try Decorating With Silk & Dried Flowers by The Home Decorating Institute.Even if you are more interested in silk flower arranging, there is still a lot of good information about color, line, texture, etc. in this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read full of useful hints
I bought this book many months ago (mid 2008) and browsed through it in preparation for opening my own dojo in 2009. As that time has come closer I have started reading this book in greater depth and have found a wealth of ideas that I would never have come up with, and I should point out that I have a double degree in human resource management and marketing, a minor in business law and a masters in accounting. Most interesting is that it is in the business side of this book that I found the most useful information - small, practical hints on student retention, information gathering, public relations and marketing made this book worthwhile for me.

I've only given it four stars however because the areas to do with any form of finance such as setting fee rates and determining student numbers are overly simplistic and therefore of limited benefit - if this area was fleshed out and a section on developing a business plan as it relates to the martial arts business was included in detail, then this book would be perfect.

Overall I recommend it to anyone who is in the process of setting up their own school, and it will be of great benefit to those who are looking for ideas to improve the running of their school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I have already another excellent book (Ultimate fitness) and some DVD's of Master Sang H. Kim. He is a great teacher and likes to share his martial arts wisdom.
This book covers almost every single aspect about running a martial arts business, from teaching to marketing.
A serious book to serious martial arts teachers.
I strongly advice you to get one.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
I'd recommend this without reservation to any martial arts instructor, part-time or full time. Or any instructor. It provides excellent simple advice for dealing with simple difficult issues such as ADD kids or other attention problems in class. It provides straightforward and concise guides for organizing a class or a business. I've had it only a few weeks, and expect to be mining its depths for years. I doubt if I'll ever sit down to read it straight through, but I've found that every time I've gone to it for any specific issue, or just to open and browse for ten or fifteen minutes, I've learned something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Instructions on how to run a great martial arts school.
This book has a wealth of information about running a dojang (dojo). From dealing with the difficult student to organizing a class with specific drills, this book covers everything a good instructor needs to at least think through.I particularly liked the aspects of running a business; when to advertise, how to run a radio spot, what to do when enrollment drops, when to expand and when not to.If your business is teaching martial arts, you must have this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lavishly illustrated
Just like other books published by Dorling Kindersley, this one is profusely illustrated by closely-spaced drawings and photographs that almost crowd out text. It's a short book, at 72 pages, but it covers, however briefly, artists' materials used in drawing, as well as a large number of drawing techniques and subjects.

Artists' materials covered include pencils & colored pencils, pens & inks, chalks & charcoal, pastels, watercolors and paper. Techniques covered include ways of working, getting started, linear drawing, tonal drawing, layout & construction, forms and modeling. And subjects covered include buildings & architecture, interiors & exteriors, landscapes, figures & drapery, life drawing & portraits, movements & gestures and drawing for painting.

This is a good catalog of drawing techniques and subjects, but if you're interested in learning to make accurate, detailed, realistic drawings, it's not the one for you. Drawings by the author are quite impressionistic and underworked by comparison with those in, say, How to Draw the Human Head by Louise Gordon or Botanical Illustration in Watercolor by Eleanor B. Wunderlich or Rendering in Pen & Ink by Arthur L. Guptill. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Masters of Arts in Education Student teacher
I loved this book! I thought it was extensive as it was interesting. I know I may only be a new student art teacher but I know this has to be an asset to the teaching community. It's a book that every art teacher should own. Almost every chapter has something you can take away and use in your classroom. More specifically Chapter 7 on Art and Social studies was so informative. I appreciated that it not only covered ideas to make learning about history fun, but it broke down point by point ideas on how to incorporate present day experiences so that the students were aware of what was going on outside of their school setting. Each chapter broke down ideas for lessons plans and activities. I really liked the fact that it tells you the best way to asses the projects after they are done. It's very much an easy read and broken down so that you have a clear understanding on how to teach the projects and activities. Overall, I just appreciated that it covered curriculum all the way up to 8th grade. A lot of great ideas in this book and it should be utilized in your classrooms.

I found this book to be very informative. As an artist, I have taken several watercolor classes. What I liked about this book was the actual work on color. This might sound strange to some but learning to watercolor doesn't always mean learning technique, brush strokes, design and composition but also effectively using and mixing color. This book is a good way to get more information on color mixing actually practice the concepts and play with color so that when you are ready to paint you can proceed with more confidence. You can purchase many tubes of different colors of paint but truly learning to mix your own colors allows for more flexibility, depth and enhancement of your watercolor paintings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Art Book!

I feel obligated to write the review for this book since it is so good...
The great thing about this book is how many distinct art movements are defined here (hundreds)...
Each synopsis provides a summary of each style, blending in the history and players - sometimes including some social ideals or philosophies behind the movements. Superb!
I first assumed i would just browse the descriptions as a reference - after seeing how insightful the text was, i read the whole thing through... very rewarding...
Quality of the book/binding/color/layout is very good...
Even though there is 1 or more examples for each style, it would have been nice if there were a few more, however, a minor point considering how refreshing and well done this book is...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to have if you are an art student
I purchased this book as a extra study guide to go along with my Oil-painting class. This book was very helpful in supplying a large amount of information on many artististic movements that have occurred through out history. The only draw back to this book is I wish it had more pictures having to do with each movement, it only supplies one for each movement or for each artist who was considered the foremost authority in this movement.Beside that the book is very helpful and resourceful. ... Product Description

With School of the Arts, Mark Doty's darkly graceful seventh collection, the poet reinvents his own voice at midlife, finding his way through a troubled passage. At once witty and disconsolate -- formally inventive, acutely attentive, insistently alive -- this is a book of fierce vulnerability that explores the ways in which we are educated by the implacable powers of time and desire in a world that constantly renews itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lyrical Master's Best Work Yet
Wow! I really can't understand why Mark Doty's most recent poetry collection hasn't been reviewed here yet, in light of its considerable popularity among the critics. Everyone seems to be hailing this book as a seminal author-finally-finding-his-own-unique-voice sort of work, a more precise definition of Doty's stylistic approach, but it seems to me to be fairly in line with the rest of his output. Still, it never feels tired or stale in the least, and several individual numbers stand out as some of the author's best to date.

School of the Arts begins and ends with two poems titled "Heaven for Helen" and "Heaven for Arden", and these help to form a thematic arc for the book as a whole, together with a few more "Heaven for..." titles interspersed throughout the middle. All of those are highlights, as well as Ultrasound, Flit, In the Same Space, Now You're An Animal, and The Pink Poppy, which may be Doty's finest meditation on beauty yet.

Cozy up with this book sometime when you're feeling pleasantly contemplative, and you will find that, as always, Doty's verse causes everything around you to take on a light of indescribable beauty, singularity, and truth. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Telling Pieces is an exploration of how pre-adolescent middle-school children develop a knowledge and understanding of the conventions of art (art as literacy) and how they use this knowledge to create representations of their lives in a small midwestern U.S. town.

Beginning with an overview of social semiotics and emergent literacy theorizing, the authors set the stage for their study of sixth graders involved in art. A galleria of children's artworks is presented, allowing readers/viewers to consider these texts independent of the authors' interpretations of them. Then, set against the galleria is the story of the community and school contexts in which the artworks are produced--contexts in which racism, homophobia, and the repression of creativity are often the norm. The interpretation the authors bring to bear on the artworks reveals stories that the artworks may or may not tell on their own. But the tales of artistic literacy achievement are counterbalanced by reflection about the content of the artworks produced, because the artworks reveal the impossibility for students to imagine beyond the situational bounds of racism, homophobia, and religiosity. The authors conclude by raising questions about the kinds of conditions that make literacy in art possible. In doing so, they explore selected alternative models and, in addition, ask readers to consider the implications of the ideological issues underlying teaching children how to represent their ideas. They also advocate for a participatory pedagogy of possibility founded on ethical relational principles in the creation and interpretation of visual text.

Of particular interest to school professionals, researchers, and graduate students in literacy or art education, this pioneering book:
* brings together the fields of art education and literacy education through its focus on how middle school students come to work with and understand the semiotic systems,
* introduces sociolinguistic, sociological, and postmodernist perspectives to thinking about children's work with art--adding a new dimension to the psychological and developmental descriptions that have tended to dominate thinking in the field,
* includes a galleria of 40 examples of children's artwork, providing a unique opportunity for readers/viewers to interpret and consider the artwork of the sixth graders independent of the authors' interpretations,
* presents descriptions of art teaching in process,
* gives considerable attention to the interpretation of the children's artworks and the influences that contribute to the content they represent, and
* considers varying models of art education along with the implications of introducing new representational possibilities.

Product Description
Created by bestselling author and MIT senior lecturer PeterSenge and a team of educators and organizational change leaders, thisnew addition to the Fifth Discipline Resource Book seriesoffers practical advice for educators, administrators, and parents onhow to strengthen and rebuild our schools.

Few would argue thatschools today are in trouble. The problems are sparking a nationaldebate as educators, school boards, administrators, and parents searchfor ways to strengthen our school system at all levels, moreeffectively respond to the rapidly changing world around us, andbetter educate our children.

Bestselling author Peter Senge andhis Fifth Discipline team have written Schools That Learnbecause educators--who have made up a sizable percentage of theaudience for the popular Fifth Discipline books--have asked for a bookthat focuses specifically on schools and education, to help reclaimschools even in economically depressed or turbulent districts. One ofthe great strengths of Schools That Learn is its description ofpractices that are meeting success across the country and around theworld, as schools attempt to learn, grow, and reinvent themselvesusing the principles of organizational learning. Featuring articles, case studies, and anecdotes from prominent educators such as HowardGardner, Jay Forrester, and 1999 U.S. Superintendent of the Year GerryHouse, as well as from impassioned teachers, administrators, parents, and students, the book offers a wealth of practical tools, anecdotes, and advice that people can use to help schools (and the classrooms inthem and communities around them) learn to learn.

You'll readabout schools, for instance, where principals introduce themselves toparents new to the school as "entering a nine-year conversation" abouttheir children's education; where teachers use computer modeling togalvanize student insight into everything from Romeo and Juliet to theextinction of the mammoths; and where teachers' training is not justbureaucratic ritual but an opportunity to recharge and rethink theclassroom.

In a fast-changing world where school violence is agrowing concern, where standardized tests are applied as simplistic"quick fixes," where rapid advances in science and technology threatento outpace schools' effectiveness, where the average tenure of aschool district superintendent is less than three years, and wherestudents, parents, and teachers feel weighed down by increasingpressures, Schools That Learn offers much-needed material forthe dialogue about the educating of children in the twenty-firstcentury.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schools that Learn
The product came in good condition. It also was delivered in the amount of time that was suggested. I am very pleased with my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schools That Learn
Excellent resource for educators and people who want to be involved with changing the educational system in our society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schools should all be learning organizations
Senge became famous for his book on learning organizations. In this book, he and his co-authors apply those concepts and ideas specifically to educational institutions. While much of their focus is on K12, the ideas and process are applicable to higher education as well. So many management books are really fads with superficial value, but Senge's books are very practical and valuable. This book in particular demonstrates a great deal of passion on the part of the author's for their topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Length appeared overwhelming--but well worth it
Having been given the instructions to select a book of vision for a reading group in a graduate class, I didn't expect to choose one of over 500 pages. The length, however, is indicative of the power this book has for changing minds about schools and the way to structure them for learning.I found myself often reading passages aloud to other educators and anyone who would listen.Instead of stifling my curiosity, the book inspired me to dig deeper on the five disciplines.A great book for creating a vision of education that includes schools where students are learning.I may purchase another one to loan out!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource book for educators
This is an essential book for anyone interested in education. Its comprehensive coverage gives much background, even at the risk of being distracting when you want to follow-up on the leads to so many interesting source-books and links.Though you are told to dip in anywhere, you must read the first section, esp. "The Industrial Age System of Education" by Senge and "A Primer to the Five Disciplines" (Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning and Systems Thinking) (pp. 27-93).

The authors consider this book a "prequel" to their other books about learning organizations (p.7).That's true.Though this is the most recent book, you can start with this one and go on to the others for further depth. Some repetitions may only serve well for mastery.

The whole book is very readable and informative.Concepts are clearly explained. It follows the same excellent editing format as The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook and The Dance of Change.

When you get too enthused by so many ideas and success stories of innovations, heed the advice for "The Strategy of Organizational Change"."Focus on one or two new priorities for change, not twelve. Most school systems are already overwhelmed with change. They don't need a new initiative; they need an approach that consolidates existing initiatives, eliminates "turf battles," and makes it easier for people to work together toward common ends." (p.25)

There are just too many passages that you wish to quote. The book is a treasure mine. However, for those (esp. busy administrators) who find the volume too daunting or verbose (592 pages!) and still want to get a handle on launching into transforming their schools into learning organisations, I would recommend, "Ten Steps to a Learning Organization" and start with the simple questionnaire given there. ...
