The best book for junior and Senior high teachers
I first read this book as an undergrad, and then again the summer after my first year of teaching in the Writing Project.I found so many useful things that I could actually impliment in the classroom.Z and D offer many easy to follow suggestions that set off that "why didn't I think of that" response.They also suggest that we "break the red pen" habit when "rewriting" our students' papers.As I finish up my first full year of teaching, I look back and see the many times I turned to Z&D for help in solving a writer's problem. ... integrating arts
a bit slower on the delivery than expected, but the item is in great condition!

Not what I expected
I ordered "Integrating the Arts Across the Elementary School Curriculum" and "Art and Cognition: Integrating the Visual Arts in the Curriculum"and "Arts as Meaning Makers, The: Integrating Literature and the Arts Throughout the Curriculum". I was so disappointed to see this book had only a small section at the end of the book describing any lesson plans to use integrating art in the curriculum, and the book cost $55.00! I thought for that price I would have had a book full of information I could use in my classroom. Iwould not buy this book again, in fact I would like to get a refund. Surprisingly, "Arts as Meaning Makers, The: Integrating Literature and the Arts Throughout the Curriculum" turned out to be much more informative and useful and it was only $6.97.

Must have book for teachers!
For some teachers, the idea of integrating the arts into the elementary classroom may seem daunting. The beauty of Gelineau's book is that she provides teachers with both the tools and activities necessary to make the transition seem far less overwhelming. There are sections devoted to each of the arts and within each section there are descriptors for all the elements that make up each art form. One of the most interesting things about this book is the introduction Gelineau gives at the beginning of each chapter. There is usually a definition of the art form as well as a historical perspective. Gelineau's book is completely user friendly in that it not only clarifies the concepts, but then offers clear activities for immediate implementation. All a teacher needs to do is to become comfortable with the arts. This is easy to do once you embrace the belief that the educational value of the arts lies in the doing and not in the outcome. The book is divided into seven sections. Chapters one and two deal with the power of the arts, while chapters three through seven discuss the specific art forms and how to integrate them into an elementary or middle school curriculum. Chapter seven entitled Making Connections gives some great ideas for connecting the arts to specific content areas. Because of it's easy to follow format and straightforward ideas; this book is truly a "must" for the teacher that wishes to incorporate the arts into a curriculum. ... Read more

Revisiting Sanford Robinson Gifford
One of the American masters of landscape painting in the nineteenth century was Sanford Robinson Gifford, and though he was highly celebrated in his lifetime, his name appears now only occasionally when the topic of the Hudson River School of art is discussed.This excellent monograph, which accompanied an exhibition of his work in 2003 - 2004, serves to restore the reputation of one of our less widely known artists who captured Americana on canvas and was an important leader of the Hudson River School of painting.

More than seventy reproductions of Gifford's paintings and drawings grace the pages of this book - scenes of the Adirondacks and Catskills, luminous river scenes filled with the transparency of fog and light.But the book also serves as an historicaldocument with photographs and information about Gifford and his travels abroad with the obvious influence of JMW Turner.His perception and use of ambient light so distinct to the Hudson River Valleyare both discussed and illustrated.

150 pages of the book are devoted to the works on display at the exhibition (I saw it at the Amon Carter).Since most of the works belong to private collectors, once the exhibition finishes at the National Gallery in Washington, this book will be the only place you will be able to look at the body of Gifford's work. Best Book Ever
I have been teaching preschool for the last six years and have seen many art books but this book stands above any I have seen.This book does an excellent job of giving examples of art work by famous artist and the activities are not crafts.The activities in this book actually focus on the PROCESS of the art not what it looks like in the end.I am so excited to get back to school and start using this book in my classroom.I will also be sharing it with the other early childhood teachers in my building.Fantastic and worth every penny!

Great for homeschoolers too!
I recently purchased this book to use at home with my 6 year old and am so excited about it.I love the way the book is organized.Each assignment is very detailed and actually tells you how to teach the assignment (like specifically what to tell the kids).Whereas, the other art books I own are full of really great project ideas but don't go into depth on the style,form, etc.I also love the fact that she gives ideas of artists to display with the assignment and even tells specific pieces that would correspond best making it a great way to tie in art appreciation.Great buy, highly recommend.

True to the man and his work

I studied a bit with Minor White while at MIT around 1970 and this book is true to the man and to his work.I cannot think of higher praise.It's a good grounding in his approach to the aesthetics and deeper aspects of photography as a fine art.

photography as a fine art shortly after WWII at the California School of Fine Arts.It is a
ground breaking drama in which we learn, in almost diary form, about the struggles of

A surprising look at Minor White
Most of what has come down to us about Minor White as a teacher and thinker is based on his East Coast career from the late 1950s to the 1970s.This well edited, richly illustrated book deals with Minor White's time at the California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco), where he founded the photography program with Ansel Adams in 1946 and taught until 1953.There are fascinating details here about what was arguably the America's first really rigorous photography curriculum, and about the reception and teaching of people like Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, and Edward Weston long before they were enshrined in the canon of modern photography.A concluding series of portfolios in this book reminds us that much of Minor White's best work was produced during his early Californina years, and attests to the quality of the work of his first students.This is an valuable book in its own right, but also an excellent companion to the indispensable Minor White: The Eye That Shapes.

This book introduces to an English-language audience the writings of the so-called New Vienna School of art history. In the 1930s Hans Sedlmayr (1896-1984) and Otto Pächt (1902-1988) undertook an ambitious extension of the formalist art historical project of Alois Riegl (1858-1905). Sedlmayr and Pächt began with an aestheticist conception of the autonomy and irreducibility of the artistic process. At the same time they believed they could read entire cultures and worldviews in the work of art. The key to this contextualist alchemy was the concept of "structure," a kind of deep formal property that the work of art shared with the world. Sedlmayr and Pächt’s project immediately caught the attention of thinkers like Walter Benjamin who were similarly impatient with traditional empiricist scholarship. But the new project had its dark side. Sedlmayr used art history as a vehicle for a sweeping critique of modernity that soon escalated into nationalist and outright fascist polemic, even while Pächt, a Jew, was forced into exile. Sedlmayr and the whole scholarly project of Strukturanalyse were sharply repudiated by Meyer Schapiro and later Ernst Gombrich.After an introductory essay, the book opens with two selections from Riegl. Following this are essays by Sedlmayr, Pächt, Guido Kaschnitz-Weinberg, and Fritz Novotny, all dating from the 1930s. The book closes with the divergent responses of Benjamin (1933) and Schapiro (1936). The difference of opinion between these two key voices raises again the question of the legitimacy and effectiveness of the method, and reveals the analogies between the New Vienna School project and the antiempiricist cultural histories of our own time. Methods ALWAYS Reflect Worldview � Often Unintentionally
Wood has done a fantastic job of assembling a representative group of texts that documents the emergence and impact of a relatively obscure school of art historical research.But its obscurity, thankfully, is now a thing of the past.

What makes this material so fascinating is that wrapped up in an academic debate one would normally consider to be a dry and remote subject - art historical methodology -are enormously important philosophical and political issues that are just as vital today as when the debate originally took place (the 1930s).

Wood does an absolutely singular job of delineating the cast of characters, setting the stage and describing the plot. To his great credit, he has also selected essays for translation, many of which appear for the first time in English, that illustrate the issues in compelling ways.One only wishes that more could have been incorporated - especially translations of Hans Sedlmayr's 1929 introduction to Riegl's Collected Essays, his 1925 piece on "Shaped Vision," and Otto Pächt's article on Michael Pacher.

What Wood demonstrates is that continuing interest in the Vienna School of Art History, and its primary protagonist Alois Riegl (three of whose main books were finally translated into English nearly a century after their original publication), constitutes a curious demand for more translations of these vivid, multivalent texts after decades of relative neglect.

I must confess that Wood does not see the full range of political issues imbedded within these writings.This is somewhat odd, because in a previously edited volume on Otto Pächt's own art historical methods in which these issues are brought right to the surface, Wood avoided a thorough discussion as well.Perhaps he is uncomfortable with this material, or perhaps he is simply "politicallytone deaf."All interpretation is through the typically Leftist academic lens, but not surprisingly, the material is far too nuanced for so puerile an instrument.In short, much remains to be said about this material, and why it still fascinates modern collectivists on the political Left.

Read it yourself and see if you agree.You will not regret the time spent.If you are an art history "buff," student or professor, this is simply MUST reading. ... Read more

International Cuisine
This book is required for a college class.
It is a good book for introducing to international cuisine.
I wouldn't buy if I didn't have to!

inaccurate, inconsistence and offensive the information in this book
I am completely amazed how inaccurate, inconsistence and offensive the information in this book is, to call one tribe cannibalistic and provide no proof for such statements.The best part (and I use that word loosely) is the recipes.The content is outdated (which makes no sense given the year of print) and historically incorrect.Anyone with internet access could have done a better job in providing accurate information about the indigenous people of each region/location, their culture, habits, contributions to cuisine and so much more.The author really should retract this book and provide a second edition that starts out with an apology, that has also been thoroughly vetted by an editor, historian and a culturally aware contributor (that has at least traveled to half of the places).Additionally this should have been a collaboration between several subject matter experts (or even people from each area) to provide a holistic view of the world, versus the authors narrow two cents.I am only keeping this as long as my class is in session.After that this will be promptly sold.

I Know Now!!
Before I got this book "Introduction to Oil Painting", I knew nothing except how to stretch the canvas. If you know how to understand what you read, you to will know how to paint with oils. It was scarey at first but this book makes it simple for beginners, and if you already know how then its' packed full of tips and ideas for instruction. I like this book very much. Thanks!

A great book for beginners!
I enjoyed this book.It spent two pages on every topic that's important to beginning artists.It never rambled on about useless, trivial information.The author focused in on clear definitions and illustrations. This reader was never confused by the book's precise method in handlingcomplicated exercises.These exercises not only explained the material,but also led to completed works of art.The book also had a small, butvital glossary.The glossary helped to reiterate important concepts, suchas scumbling, aerial perspective, fat-over-leanpainting and high-keycolors(just to name a few).Reading this book is like taking an artclass.It focuses in on the most important concepts; and, it explains themin a brief, succinct manner.

Nice idea spoiled by carelessness
My soft-cover version of this highly-attractive book has plenty of nice features. The overall concept is sound, (although a little cursory in places, even for a book aimed at beginners); the instructional andinformational content is generally useful and interesting; theillustrations and reproductions are excellent. There are even some healthand safety tips that were very welcome.

So, what's the problem? The lowrating I gave this book falls squarely at the feet of the editor(s). Simplyput, there are far too many mistakes for a book of this size!

Completelywrong labels on a graph of oil content in paints makes for total confusion,especially if you're trying to come to terms with the "fat overlean" concept or similar technical ideas. Page cross-references thatare incorrect are frustrating, but tolerable, in a monthly magazine ordaily newspaper, but not in a textbook! There are numerous other littlelabelling, spelling, word-usage and grammatical errors, as well as a coupleof invented words ("sawned off" is going to stick in my memoryfor a long time!) and a few "explanations" that don't explainanything.

I'm not sorry I bought the book, but it would be so much easierfor my wife, who is just starting out in oil painting, and who is not anative user of English, if the information were a bit more reliable.

Ipurchased another Ray Smith book [Portraits, hardcover] and have no realcriticisms of that book. I would consider buying others in the series, butthis one is a little disappointing. A very beautiful book spoiled by sloppyediting. It's really a shame!

A little gem that is still worthwhile
Although this book is now more than a decade old it is still an invaluable resource for parents and students. Of particular importance is the introduction by Wm. F. Buckley Jr. Even if you and your college bound youngster do not choose one of the recommended colleges, the introduction will enlighten and familiarize you with what a classical or "liberal arts" education, vs. technical or vocational training, should be. You can thus judge the educational institutions you are condsidering by thecriteria and characteristics described in the book.

I had my own list of acceptable colleges for my daughter, all derived from this book, but she fell in love with a college that didn't make the list -- primarily because of its reputation forbeing far on the left of the political and social spectrum. In light of the essays and guidelines offered in this book I was comfortable with her choice -- because her small, private, liberal arts college did demand the core curriculum, based on 5000 years of knowledge and culture from western civilization, that any good liberal arts college or university should provide, no matter the size or purported reputation. These criteria for an enduring, quality education have not changed for hundreds of years, so the fact that this book was published in 1993 should not be a hindrance to its critical regard and purchase.

One of the better college guides
Leftists concerned about the "National Review" authorship should not be deterred from reading and using this book.

This is a great guide to where you'll find a good, solid liberal arts curriculum.If your ideaof a solid liberal arts curriculum does not match the author's, then thetext is certainly useful as a way to eliminate schools from your list.

We discovered Schenectady's Union College in this guide, went to visit,and were so impressed, we put it on my child's list of schools to apply to.We would never have considered it, without this guide book.

Needs to be updated.The ISI Guide is more complete.
Getting your kid into a good college is a nerve-racking process for most parents.It certainly has been for us.We have found the customer reviews in Amazon very helpful.That prompts us to distill our ratings of thevarious guidebooks.

The best short reference on each college is thePrinceton Review of The Best (311) Colleges.It gives ratings of academicquality, difficulty of admission, percentage admitted, etc.There is alsoa brief summary of college life and what each place might be looking for.

Peterson Guide is comprehensive, and has long write-ups for each school. There is a front section for each school, listed alphabetically withineach state, and a back section with detailed profiles of selectedinstitutions.

Fiske's guide is interesting, but he basically hassomething good to say for each school, so careful reading between the linesand for "damning with faint praise" is called for.

The Yale Insider'sGuide is extremely subjective, with different students writing variousreviews.We did not find it too reliable, except in conjunction with otherbooks.

Choosing theRight College by ISN was extremely helpful.Some readers criticized it forbeing allegedly right wing.We did not find it so.Rather, knowing thepoint of view of the authors helped us evaluate their observations.Otherbooks do not make their biases explicit.A feature of the book we foundparticularly helpful was the naming of excellent professors and departmentsin each college.

Antonoff's College Finder was interesting only inconjunction with other books.

Three books written from the perspective ofcollege admissions officers were very interesting and helpful.They areThe College Admissions Mystique, by Mayher, Getting In, by Bill Paul, andmost of all A is for Admission by Michelle Hernandez.We stronglyrecommend that parents and the kids who are the applicants read at leastone of these.

Another very helpful book was You're Gonna Love ThisCollege Guide, by Marty Nemko.It takes the student through the decisionprocess of big vs. small, urban vs. country, elite vs. the level justbelow, geography, and so forth.That really got our daughter unstuck inher thinking process.

Loren Pope is another helpful author for those whothink that not getting into Harvard is the end of the world.

Threebooks we did not find to be particularly helpful are Getting Into AnyCollege, by Jim Good and Lisa Lee, The National Review College Guide, byCharles Sykes and Brad Miner (too out of date), and The Real FreshmanHandbook, by Jennifer Hanson.

One book we found to be unexpectedlyuseful was Getting Into Medical School Today, by Scott Plantz, et. al. Even if your child is not interested in medical school, this book putscollege in perspective for any post-college program.

A must read for the family of any college bound child.
Any concerned parent of a college-bound student would do well to read this book and take its warnings seriously. Too many college students have been graduated with little or no knowledge of the bases of western civilization, and many have not had the pleasure of being taught in small classes by real professors. Choosing a college from this list will almost guarantee your student a good foundation for applying thought and critical analysis to the ideas they will encounter the rest of their life. This book rates, in my opinion, right up there with Charles Sykes's "A Nation of Victims," and Dinesh D'Souza's "Illiberal Education."
