Product Description
Picturing the City takes an innovative look at the group of urban realists known as the Ashcan School, and at the booming cultures of vision and representation in early twentieth-century New York. Offering fresh insights into the development of modern cities and modern art in America, Rebecca Zurier considers what it meant to live in a city where strangers habitually watched each other and public life seemed to consist of continual display, as new classes of immigrants and working women claimed their places in the metropolis. Through her study of six artists--George Bellows, William Glackens, Robert Henri, George Luks, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan--Zurier illuminates the quest for new forms of realism to describe changes in urban life, commercial culture, and codes of social conduct in the early 1900s.
Synthesizing visual and literary analysis with urban cultural history, Picturing the City focuses new attention on the materiality and design process of pictures. The author scrutinizes all manner of visual activity, from the pandemonium of comics to the mise-en-scene of early movies, from the mark of an individual pen stroke to a glance on the street, from illustrators' manuals to ambitious paintings that became icons of American art. By situating the Ashcan School within its proper visual culture, Zurier opens up the question of what the artists' "realism" meant at a time when many other forms of representation, including journalism and cinema, were competing to define "real life" in New York City. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars cartoonist of the Ashcan painters
Zurier makes the point that Glackens,Bellows,Shinn and Sloan were cartoonist. John Sloan is given anentire chapter todiscuss his work. She cites all of the Ashcan painters as flaneurs. Flaneur has a superficial connotation to it ,see Websters dictionary for a definition. They were walkers . Some worked in sketchbooks in their journeys in the big city. Not, John Sloan,he worked from memory, an approach he insisted upon.R. Zurier does a fine job analyzing the work of these painters. She talks about how Sloan wasalone in getting depth in his vision, she observes how the people represented are looking at each other ,but at the same time they seem to be looking at us.In all of the books on Sloan, Zurier has the most unique analysis of his work. Her work is cited in the later book John Sloan's New York...2007 .Sloan has rejected social realism as an approach to change the world. Sloan lived longer than the other painters with the exception of Shinn who died two years after him.Sloan knew about abstract art and the work of Picasso. Yet,he heldfirm to a representational approach. Part of that was his socialism, he became disenchanted with social art when he was art editor of "the Masses". The Trotskyites for one leftist group believe that it is necessary to have a cartoon approach to relate to the masses.Zurier has carefully researched her subject thoroughly. Her bibliography is vast. This book will do much to raise the reputation of the Ashcan artists. Art history today is multi-disciplinary. Art history has always been a difficult field.. But , the student today will need a wide background to read and study the field. There are art history studies on artist that emphasize the sciences in analyzing an artist work. The natural sciences effect the arts today as much as the social sciences. The scholar ,the avid reader ,and artist will benefit from this book. As an artist i was especially interested in how these artist were able to develop their work ,from living in New York.According to Seitz in his book on Abstract Expressionism the city was one of the main subjects of Rothko,Dekooning,Kline,Toby among others..So in some sense the Ashcan painters paved the way for the establishment of this important subject. In that respect it is a worthwhile read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for art historians
This outstanding history and evaluation of the Ashcan School is deeply informed by current urban studies and rooted in the critique of everyday life. I strongly recommend this book for urban and democracy studies as well as those philosophers and sociologists seeking visual and concrete manifestations of otherwise abstract theories. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Really Bad Book
300 Lessons in Art is the worst excuse for art instruction I have ever seen.It is a complete joke.I wish I had my money back.I wish I could have looked inside the book.I would have never bought. The book is NOT 300 Lessons in Art!Instead, it is 300 art lesson ideas for teachers. It has a limited number of cartoonish black and white drawings and may be okay for grade school art instruction but I doubt it.Amazon should include a real description of the contents of this book.

Product Description

The school curriculum is a contested arena. There are competing pressures from those who advocate that it should be constructed on a subject specific basis, whereas at the other end of the continuum is the stance taken by this book, that learning, and especially learning in the arts, can transcend artificial boundaries between subjects. This book sets out a case for cross-curricular learning involving the arts in secondary schools.

Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School...The Arts argues for the development of a new, skilful pedagogy which embeds an authentic, cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning in the work of the individual teacher. Teachers are empowered to think about creative pedagogies, and pupils are able to engage in deep learning as a result.

Key features of the text include:

  • theoretical examination of key issues
  • curriculum planning materials and resources
  • a wide range of case studies drawn from innovative practise
  • frameworks for assessment and evaluation.

Part of the Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School series, this textbook breaks the boundaries between curriculum subjects and the arts. It is timely reading for all students on Initial Teacher Training courses as well as practising teachers looking to introduce cross-curricular themes in their own subjects.

Product Description
On November 13, 1971, the exhibition "Education of an Architect: A Point of View" -- featuring the work of Cooper Union student architects under the direction of the chairman of the Department of Architecture, John Hejduk, and the dean, George Sadek -- opened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The installation of models, drawings, and photographs, along with faculty and student statements, documented work from 1964 to 1971. At the time, Ada Louise Huxtable wrote, "This spectacularly beautiful work, elegant, formal, and totally detached from the world around it, represents a kind of counterrevolution in today's educational thought and practice."

To accompany the exhibition, the Cooper Union published an extremely influential limited-edition book -- long since out of print -- of fifty-four projects by some sixty students showing their in-depth explorations of problems based on the visual discoveries of cubism and neo-plasticism as they related to architectural space and thought. This new volume is a smaller-format reprint that includes all material from the original book -- exceptional color and black-and-white drawings and model photographs -- and the original introduction by Ulrich Franzen, along with three new texts, an introduction by architectural historian and educator Alberto Pérez-Gómez; an essay by Kim Shkapich, director of the architectural archives at Cooper Union; and an afterword by Hejduk. The reprint charts the foundations of the pedagogical inventions and methodology that a spirited and independent faculty, under the aegis of John Hejduk, brought into what has been called 'the best school of architecture in the world.' ... 1-0 out of 5 stars never received product
I was disappointed because I never received this product.I received a note back from the sender that it was undeliverable to that address. They had my absolute correct address, as I placed another amazon order at the same time with the same address and received it two days later.Clearly, their shipping department typed in the address incorrectly on the package.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite resources
We are a homeschooling family and this book has been an absolute treasure for our learning adventures. Saccardi's book shares information on the history of art during each time period, stories about the artists, suggestions for famous works of that artist to show, journaling exercises and recommended art projects done in the method or similar style of the artist you are studying.

We've used this book along with our history. When we started with ancient history and nomads we studied cave paintings and drew chalk pictures on brown grocery sacks. When we reached the Middle Ages we found a kit to help us do illumination. When we reached American history we painted historical scenes on large sheets of tagboard in effort to paint like Benjamin West. I'm very careful about money spent on materials and this book is one I've never regretted buying. I'm so glad to see it in print again so others can discover it!

In Naive Art, Art scholar Natalia Brodskaia draws upon her experience and expertise as a curator at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg to showcase a genre of art that is marked by innocence, naturalness, and spontaneity of the untaught and self-taught artist. These so called "primitive" artists first came into prominence for an American public with Grandma Moses, whose work first established the legitimacy and broad based popularity of "naive art". But this category of art stretches back into the mid-19th century as Brodskaia amply documents with her sweeping and informative survey. Profusely illustrated in color with small, medium, full page, and occasional double-page paintings, Naive Art is an enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library art history and art reference book collections. ... Product Description
This comprehensive view of carvings and paintings on stone by Native Americans from 200 B.C. through the nineteenth century surveys the rock art of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, northern Mexico, and west Texas, providing an incomparable visual record of Southwest Indian culture, religion, and society.

Rock carvings and paintings are important sources in the archaeological and historical interpretation of Southwest Indians. Rock art reflects the cosmic and mythic orientation of the culture that produced it, and understanding of prehistoric peoples, both hunters and gatherers and the Hohokam, Anasazi, Mogollon, and Fremont cultures, and the Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache Indians. Culturally significant events such as the shift in prehistoric times from spear and atlatl to the bow, or, in the historic period, the introduction of the horse into the Southwest, are recorded in rock art.

The illustrations--thirty-two color plates, nearly 250 photographs, and numerous line drawings--bring together in one volume petroglyphs and rock paintings that are scattered over thousands of miles of desert and mesa, giving the reader an overview of Indian rock art that would be nearly impossible to achieve in the field.

Indian Rock Art of the Southwest examines from an archaeological perspective the rich legacy of stone drawings and carvings preserved throughout the Southwest. Professional and amateur archaeologists and historians, as well as the general reader with an interest in Indian art, will find this volume a valuable resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is not good.....its awesome.
There are many books on the market that describe how to operate a school, many by people who make a living from writing about how to run a school that dont actually have schools. It doesnt matter if you are just starting out as a school owner, been in the biz for a few years or have been in the biz since time began you need this book. I once was told that as you sit in a seminar and listen to the information that is being presented, your not being taught but being reminded of what you need to do. There are many examples of systems and procedures that will help you run your school efficiently, many with examples of how its worked, and also how it didnt't. I have this book as well as Johns other books sitting at the corner of my desk on a shelf as reminders. I can often be found reading in them from time to time just to remind me of how it should be done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflected on Personal Experiences
This a very thoughtful book that outlines steps for creating a democratic learning community and offers examples of democratic learning communities in action. Reading "American Schools" made me reflect on my own leadership experiences and think about the importance of balance between freedom and structure. Chaltain clearly describes how finding the right balance is key. I really enjoyed reading the examples of schools working to create democratic learning communities, especially the one about MC2 in New Hampshire. It is evident that MC2 has found balance. I also loved the recommended actions at the end of chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Classroom to the Boardroom
A must-read for anyone interested in organizational change from the classroom to the boardroom. The author, Sam Chaltain. brings fresh insight to four classic concepts (Reflect, Connect, Create, Equip) and encourages the reader to "test drive" these concepts in the context of three varied school communities. It is through inspired storytelling that the reader is able to clearly visualize these programs and customize Mr. Chaltain's ideas to their own life and needs for change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both useful and inspiring
In a highly-readable style, Sam Chaltain skillfully weaves together theory and practice for creating democratic learning communities where young people are both seen - and heard. I most appreciate the practical recommendations and additional resources found at the culmination of each of the five chapters on theory. They include useful, tangible ideas - for many sorts of professionals...not just educators - that can be explored or implemented easily and immediately.Readers get the chance to apply our learning in the second section, as Chaltain shares inspiring portraits of schools striving to create model communities - to varying degrees of success. This book is thoughtful, compelling and useful. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Democracy Comes to School
If you've ever thought about how schools - designed to prepare youth for adult life - can do more to help our young people develop the knowledge and skills to be fully engaged citizens, then this book is for you. Chaltain combines his extensive experience with democratic schooling practices across the United States with his likewise extensive research into learning theory, organizational development, and systems change theory to present a clear, cogent framework for developing school communities that take democratic practice to heart. The practical and the theoretical are woven together in a delightfully readable book that would serve well as a basis for whole school discussion. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Provocative...and not just for professional educators
Chaltain's "American Schools" is often fascinating and insightful, consistently entertaining and well-written, and at all times important reading for both professional educators and anyone with an interest in improving our schools. In the first section, Chaltain summarizes and interweaves analyses from a variety of disciplines. The reader need not be expert in, or even familiar with, any of them to grasp Chaltain's arguments and appreciate the time he takes to build his case.At the same time, Chaltain brings the conversation from theory to practice, as he ends each chapter with specific recommendations (e.g., books to read, websites to visit, exercises to consider). In the second section, Chaltain reinforces his lessons by telling compelling stories of real schools where these issues have been addressed, of principals, teachers and students striving to create and participate in communities that empower each, and thus all. This book is useful and inspiring (as are Chaltain's other books); I recommend it. ... Product Description
Teaching Shakespeare is a major contribution to the knowledge and expertise of all teachers of Shakespeare in schools, colleges and institutions of higher education. It makes explicit the principles of active learning that underpin Cambridge School Shakespeare and helps teachers develop their existing good practice.Practical examples are given from the plays most frequently used in schools, but Rex Gibson shows that the principles apply equally to the less frequently studied plays, thereby extending the canon of school Shakespeare. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated
I bought this book based on the reviews contained in this section of Amazon.I am sorely disappointed in this book and its usefulness in my classroom.Having taught Shakespeare for over ten years, I find that this book brings nothing new to the table and I will probably never use it.The insight and suggested lesson plans are all old hat and boring.Oh, well............

4-0 out of 5 stars good basic guidebook
This book had some good background information about the teaching and criticism of Shakespeare set out in a simple manner. This is especially useful to teachers who may not have had any specific training in teaching Shakespeare and focuses on active teaching methods including classroom performance. There are a lot of innovative ideas to substitute the usual chalk and talk or reading lessons. While not all the ideas are practical or in my opinion worthwhile, there are a lot to choose from.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare, Rattle and Roll
This is a comprehensive look at the many components of the Bard's work.Lots of detail and very little is left out.It could prove to be a valuable source for English and Theatre Arts teachers. It is so all-inclusive that teachers can choose to focus on certain sections or keep it as a worthy resource (which it is).

It's for the serious teacher of Shakespeare.Gibson is the man.He knows his stuff and he wants your students to know it too.But could you teach it all?Hardly. But you could teach some of it.

The book is user-friendly and it's a good companion to the Cambridge School Shakespeare series. ... Read more
