5-0 out of 5 stars Instructional and Inspirational
This book is instructional in nature with alot of beautiful inlay work completed by the author and from other inlay artist. It teaches alot of inlay techniques and how to do quality inlay work. This book is for the beginner and then some. The pictured work is inspirational and worth the price alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I'm beginning to build guitars and wanted to do inlay work which was a little more intricate than simple pearl dots. The writer explains the process completely. The book also has many photos showing incredible inlay art which serves as inspiration for detailed guitar fingerboard art as well as inspiration for inlay art not associated with instuments. I've never even wanted to build a jewelry box with inlay and marquetry. Now I'm inpired to do just that. Good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Master Craftsman
I should start out this review by confessing that I'm biased.I own a custom guitar on which Larry Robertson did the inlay work.Since I'm one of those people who gets very involved in the design of anything that interests me, Larry and I had quite a few talks about what I wanted and how things would be done. This was an educational experience that was worth the price of entry itself, and the result never fails to amaze me.

What convinced me to approach Robinson about the work was the content of this small, but impressive volume. It is one thing to know that a craftsman is a master by reputation, and another to see the evidence in print before you.In my opinion Larry is the U.S.'s premier master of inlay, only surpassed on this continent by Grit Laskin, a Canadian Luthier who does it all, and very well.

The technical portion of this book is excellent.Robinson's written style is so straightforward that my first reaction was that he was leaving something out.But he really doesn't.Between the text and the illustrations, there is enough information and inspiration to last through more than a rack full of guitars.Whether you are a luthier trying to make something special, or a connoisseur of the guitar and its relatives, this book belongs on your shelfs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction - want more!
This book is unquestionably a fine collection of the author's work, which is beautiful, and a fantastic book for giving you a start on the process of inlay. Robinson's writing is excellent, as clear as you could get. And his sequence of coverage makes a lot of sense, too. This is a very good introduction to the possibilities and the process of inlay and if that's what you are looking for then it is worth buying.
But I gave it 4 stars because the book focuses only on his own work and because the promise of "design and technique" is not fully actualized. It's just that one would appreciate somewhat more depth of coverage, adding information on "pitfalls" in addition to "process", as well as a more comprehensive look at other people's possibilities in design. And, I would have really loved to have had some very close up photographs of inlay details, and even photographs of "bad" work and mistakes for reference. In that case, this would be a classic on the topic. It's probably more work than his intention of writing this book, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new edition if that were the case, and as a fellow artisan I would truly appreciate it. How about it, Robinson? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical Secrets about Line Etching & Engraving Review
"Line" is one of the seven "Elements of Art," ingrained into students vocabulary in art classes across the globe. (I taught art in Ghana, and the students had these terms memorized like the days of the week.) Catherine Brooks' book on Line Etching & Engraving lays down the foundation of intaglio printmaking and gives step-by-step instructions on how to use the specific tools and accomplish the techniques. Asphaltum. Acid. Hotplate. Scraper. Burnisher. Copper Plate. Drypoint Needle. These all sound like archaic tools used in the middle ages, and in fact, intaglio printmaking is a centuries old process. However, this book shows how contemporary artists like Julie Mehretu, Anish Kapoor, and Richard Tuttle, made prints in the Crown Point Press studio that are distinctly modern and cool. There are excellent photographs of the artists working on plates and beautiful reproductions of their prints. The step-by-step instructions are written in a clear voice and the reader can follow the photos that illustrate the technical process. I would recommend this book to a printmaking student, print-shop professional, or someone who is interested in prints and wants to expand their knowledge of printmaking. There are also fantastic and sometimes humorous quotes from the artists dotted throughout the book. I like this one by Tom Marioni, "I am fascinated by art that can only be seen if you know it is art. If something that's not painting or sculpture seems interesting and is in an art context, it might be a work of invisible art." In short, this book will improve your printmaking skills immensely, it could inspire you to do something creative, or as an art collector, you might even find a new love of prints. The dvd is absolutely worthwhile--it brings the whole thing together, especially for a visual learner. I wish I had this book when I was a printmaking student in art school!

2-0 out of 5 stars misleading book title and reviews
I purchased this book to help inspire my art or get new ideas flowing. I read reviews and looked at the inside of the book. But, when I received it and read it, I found it to be a book about journaling. This is not what I had in mind. I tried to follow the exercises and got a painting going. I am trying to give this book another shot, but so far I feel the book is too personal to the author and that taints ones' own creative discoveries. I have nothing against the author, but the projects seem sort of hodge-podge. This could be a good thing... maybe a stepping stone to better ideas, but the book didn't live up to the title nor the review hype.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Artist's View of Using Creativity to Transform Your Life
(Originally reviewed on the Arts & Healing Network at [...]

In this book, Sheri Gaynor shares wisdom gained from teaching workshops on the EnVision Process. This three-step process involves "EnVision Dreamtime" in which you use journaling and quiet reflective time to articulate your vision; "Creating the Art of Intention" in which you make an art piece that anchors your vision; and "Reflections" in which you respond to the artwork with writing and possible additions to the art over time.

The first part of the book sets the stage. Sheri shares the story of her own creative journey, instructions on the EnVision Process, a suggested materials list, and a whimsical exercise called "The Creative Awakenings Visa" in which you make a visual commitment to explore uncharted creative terrain. Then the book divides into a month-by-month format for 12 months - each month featuring a different artist who practiced Sheri's EnVision Process. Artists such as Deborah Koff Chapin, Claudine Hellmuth and others share their EnVision artwork, journal excerpts, and instructions on specific techniques they use in their own artwork such as "Layering with a Transparency" or "Painting by Touch." Also in this section, Sheri has re-printed blog entries about the unfolding process of working with these artists and creating the book. The last part of the book includes additional resources such as a deck of Transformation Cards to tear out and shuffle for additional guidance as your vision develops.

This book is a nice complement to the other two reviewed here in that it delves into the personal creative life of 12 artists and how they each work in a unique way with the visioning process. I was really struck how much the experiences of worry, fear, anxiety, or doubt plague most of the artists, and in the end, seem to be necessary demons to work through in order to get to the shear joy of creating. Also this book is in full color - not only are there many illustrations, but even the text-only pages are on colored, patterned backgrounds. The book offers several different creative techniques to create your vision art - not just the traditional cut-and-paste collage method most often employed in doing this kind of intentioning work. All in all, this is a book that will appeal to creative people who are looking not only to articulate their dreams in a visual form, but also looking for inspiration and insight about the creative path.

2-0 out of 5 stars NEED TIME and MONEY and NO KIDS
This book is for rich people with no kids and lots of extra time on their hands to "dream".

The "materials needed" for the journal are expensive. I never even heard of most of the items and they are not readily available. Just getting all the materials to make the journal would take a month. Author does not advise where or how to get the items.

Author assumes you have already been an avid artist and soul searcher for years that is getting nowhere. Maybe there is a reason for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration
Lovely book! This is a collaborative project Sherri facilitated with some well-known mixed media artists. Each chapter (or month) features one artist and his/her process of creating the artwork. Including techniques such as creating textured work on clayboard and transferring an image to cloth, I'll be looking here for ideas. Rich images and words, it will be agreat inspiration for journaling. If you are looking for a process to get your creative on, this may be a good read for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Creativity
I found this book to be inspirational. I had been searching for a new creative outlet, and this is one of the books that helped me get started. It was filled with fresh ideas from a number of mixed media artists. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in exploring new creative avenues. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is great even if you are experienced or just starting..I call this book my painting bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent beginners book
Fabulous book, written especially for beginners who know very little about painting, but also has EXCELLENT pointers for those who are good painters, but love those extra tips.

I've got this one at the top of my shelf and I've underlined, bookmarked pages, etc. It really is an excellent read, but most of all, it has really easy-to-follow instructions and doesn't leave you confused.

If you're just learning to paint, then you really have to get this book. You just have to. It is written SIMPLY and is EASY to read and the book is really thick and hardback and will last a really long time. Well worth the money and something you can use as a reference too.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great, comprehensive painting guide for anyone who is interested in getting into oil, acrylics or watercolor painting. It shows all the basics needed including the materials available and needed and it also shows (at least to me) some advanced techniques. Great for any beginner and maybe even intermediate painter. The only complaint I have to make is that I would have liked that the book covered other kinds of painting too, such as glass painting, but I guess it makes sence that they didn't really get into that since it seems to me that it is a classic kind ot painting school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A huge resource for anyone painting anything!
I am very pleased with the work I have created using this book. I had a lot of questions about watercolor and oil painting. Most of the other books I purchased and studied left a lot of the beginner things out....like how to actually mix colors well. The format is wonderful as well, you can go from one exercise to the next a really get some techniques under your belt. The approach to demystifying the products needed for each media was fantastic. You are shown what each product is for and when you might use it. The instuctions in the book include clear step by step pictures...so you don't start feeling lost halfway through the exercise. The best part? There is no rigid rules, the dialogue is personal and encouraging. You flip through it and start itching to paint! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brushstrokes: close-up and personal
Other reviewers have given this book five stars and rightly so but I thought they didn't quite reveal how good it is.

Don't be put of by the words Great Masters in the title, it actually covers artists from the Old Masters (1300-1860) Impressionists (1860-1905) and Modern Masters (1905-1980).A hundred paintings, in color, from seventy-seven artists are considered and each work gets the same treatment, for instance Roy Lichtenstein's 'Whaam!' gets two spreads. The first page has a small photo of the artist and about three hundred words regarding his painting technique, this text relates to seven small line drawings and captions revealing how he worked. The right-hand page has a picture of Whaam! and a preparatory black and white drawing, both have long captions. The next spread has four life size details of the painting (each with a simple thumbnail of the work to show where the detail comes from) and again long captions explaining techniques and the materials used.

It is the life size illustrations that, to me, make this book special. There are plenty of visual art history books, my favorites are the Phaidon series: The Art Book, The 20TH Century Art Book and The American Art Book, all bursting with whole page works of art but it is only when you can see a lifesize close-up of the work (plus a detailed caption) that things somehow start to fall into place and a greater appreciation is acquired. There is something special in looking at part of Henri Rousseau's 'The Dream' or Frank Stella's 'Hyena Stomp' and knowing that you're seeing part of the painting the same size as these artists created it.

Apart from looking at art techniques (and history) in a rather unusual way another reason I love this book is because it is beautifully designed and printed. You can use it as a reference work or just browse through some stunning paintings and understand them and their creators more.

BTW It originally came out in 1985 and it seems there are various reprints so I think it's worth checking the page numbers to see that you buy the complete book. This edition has 541 pages plus another eighteen unnumbered pages at the back. There are three sections to the book (Old Masters, Impressionists and Modern Masters) and I believe each section has been published as a single book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it
This is one of the most exciting books on the history of art in combination with the technique of great masters that you can come across. Richly illustrated and covering a wide range of artists, this book does not merely give a biography of the artist and an example of his works. Its attraction lies in the fact that one painting of each artist is analysed in detail including sequence of painting, materials and techniques used from the start to finish with some good close-ups and analysis. This is a rare book which brings actual clarity to the reader who may be eager to learn as to how certain effects were achieved by many masters, while at no time erasing the mystique associated with the masterpieces. It has the potential to greatly accelerate the learning curve of an intermediate painter while remaining of value even to the pro. Rich, stimulating, good value for money and a treat in all respects, this book will be near the top of the chart of your favorites in its category, if not numero uno.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good companion to Gardner

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for aspiring beginners starting from scratch
I completely agree with a previous costumer which rated 1 star. While this book can be a shallow photo catalog of scandinavian style figures, it is certainly not real help for the aspiring beginner (the "where-to-find-the- knive" and "how-to-hold-it" issues, for example). I guess one could get similar results by researching photographs through library books or Internet and try to make the whole thing alone.
In an effort to recover some background of artisans related with such carving stylethrough history, mixed with the author's personal idea of the reader gaining expertise with around 40 patterns (which, by the way, are not worth their printed space through 20 good quality paper pages inthis book), based only in two previos detailed examples, theauthor fails in making a final product to cover seriously both issues.
A nice marketing strategy, but a great mistake in trustingHarley Refsal and Fox CHapel Publishing for the next woodcarving related choices.
Not recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Cover, Useless for the Beginner
The cover of this book says "Step-by-Step Instructions & Patterns for 40 Flat-Plane Carving Projects".

What it should say is "Step-by-Step Instructions For 2 Projects, & Patterns for 40 more".

In this 120 page book, there are less that 20 pages of step-by-step instructions. Two projects are covered (I admit, in detail and with good photos) but there is no foundation whatsoever for those 20 pages. What kind of knife do you use? How do you hold it? What strokes are used for carving? What do you need to know about cutting with or across the grain? None of these questions are answered in this book. If you are a beginner picking up this book, you will be completely lost.

The section on the history and practitioners of Scandinavian woodcarving takes up the majority of this book. While it is somewhat interesting, that is not why I bought the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed Instruction from a World Famous Master
This is the best and most detailed book you are going to find on the subject of Flat-Plane carving. The photos are bright and the steps clear enough to not leave you hanging (avoids being a very frustrated beginner.)For those of you lucky enough, Harley still teaches classes in the upper midwest and occasionally at our nations craft houses. What I learned most about Harley's methods, is you really don't need a bucket full of hand tools.Every thing is done with a knife.Finding his particular knife is not easy.A sturdy bench knife will do just fine.I never carved a thing in my life until I picked up this book.I followed along and eventually discovered what the photo was telling me.Now after carving some more and reading other authors, I can really appreciate the time they took on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harley Refsal's Latest
This book is a revision of the 1992 classic by Harley Refsal. The new book is a larger format with a lot more color. My previous copy had been getting pretty dog-eared so the new one came along just in time. For those of you who may not be familiar with Harley's previous work, his is the foremost publication that describes the history and methods of "Scandinavian Flat Plane Carving".In my opinion, Scandinavia is the origin of the genre that we all love and call caricature carving.

The new book has added a section on carving and finishing the Dalcarlian Horse - the classic horse carved in Sweden for almost two centuries. The demonstration of Flat-Plane figure carving is of Harley's Oskar, an immigrant-era figure. The instruction is extremely detailed and about like having Harley over your shoulder taking you through the entire process.A number of new patterns have been added to this edition.

If I had a limit on the carving books in my collection, (and thank goodness I don't have) Harley Refsal's would be one of the select few.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily the Best Carving Book Available
Harley's new book builds on his previous book on Scandinavian woodcarving, but he adds much more both in the area of carving and the history of carving. There is the old familiar Oskar but there is also a Scandinavian horse. There is additional information in the history area, a section on painting, as well as an expanded section on patterns. The photography is in color and quite detailed. If you are a wood carver, this book will be a wonderful addition to your woodcarving library.

Product Description

He was one-half of the brother team that produced the most remarkable fantasy art of our time. Their Tolkien calendar sold over one million copies (more than any calendar before or since) and their classic poster for a little film named Star Wars helped turn it into an unexpected worldwide phenomenon. This very special collection brings together Tim Hildebrandt's finest paintings and drawings, along with an account of his techniques and materials--from thumbnail sketches to finished works. Highly influenced by animation, especially Disney's early films, Hildebrandt has used his skill and passion to develop those traditions into a unique, personal, and dynamic style. Here are paintings from children's books (including the folktale Billy Goats Gruff), from various science fiction and fantasy novels, from gallery shows, from the Tolkien calendar--and of course, the unforgettable Star Wars poster in various stages of production.160 pages (all in color), 9 1/2 x 12. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Not,"I'd like you to look at this' but 'I'm going to MAKE you look at this!'"

I've always been attracted to Illuataation as an art form.Whether it is in nature art,,Bev Doolittle ,book illustrations.B&W line art, Pen& Ink,and various others. I have often read where the art "purests" look down on Illustration as an art form.I have never felt they were correct. In recent years we have been treated to an explosion in this art form, particularly with Fantasy Art.It is mentioned that Michelangelo's frescoes and Leonardo da Vincis art wasat the time considered to be nothing more than pure fantasy.Much of their work was certainly illustrative and I think they knew a bit about art.
This book details the work of one of the best Illustrative artists, and shows how he and his brother made a very successful career in this area. There is a great deal of information dealing with their techniques and in manys the book can be considered a teaching resource.Although I am not an artist;I found it very interesting and it told me a lot about what to look for in these paintings. There is also considerable information on what is involved for someone who has a desire to be a successful painter or illustrator.
A very good and informative book for an artist or just someone who admires art and wants to learn more about it.This is a large, beautiful book with excellent paper, printing ,and wonderful color rendition.
Anyone who likes Illustration Art will certainly enjoy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader
I picked this up because I thought if nothing else, there would be some interesting stuff to look at it.

Quite a bit of the not overly dense text is associated with tips or technical comments aimed at artists, so not really of much interest in general to the rest of us.

There are examples of different styles and media, and even a prototype Star Wars poster.

It also talks about how he uses toys and even a stuffed iguana as models sometimes - which explains some of the weird dragons.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR FANS AND ILLUSTRATORS!
As a professional illustrator and fan of the brothers Hildebrandt I was pleased this book was made. Since my purchase of this book I studied it carefully from cover to cover and it's contents are well worth the cost of the book. Although the book isn't written by Hildebrandt himself it's full of good information on how Tim Hildebrandt works. I recommend this book to artist's of all levels of experience due to it's technical info and to fans of fantasy and sci-fi art as well for it's entertainment value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great anatomy book for painting and sketching!!!
This book shows lots of pictures from skeletons at different angles, to skulls, bones, xrays of placement, muscle groupings in different areas, abs as well as nude bodies in different positions.EXCELLENT resource book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little archaic, not very useful for todays world.
This book is severely lacking in visual resources. Its images are few, and seem to be from the 50's. The men wear loincloths, where in a anatomy book nowadays there would be full nudity. The examples are not very illustrative. For the artist perhaps looking for that resource to occasionally reference, there are far better books nowadays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise, thorough, and simple
The skeleton and musculature of male and female figures illustrated in B&W photos and line drawings.Still a good reference, though some details of shading are lost in printing photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Students' Anatomy Edmond J. Farris
Couldn't agree more with the two previous posts about it being better
than most of the $20.00 anatomy books. this cheap book gives you a more
clear and concise view of human anatomy, perfect for beginners, and even
professionals, restated save your money buying fancy anatomy books, i find
it funny how i own majority of the top art anatomy books but yet i have this on my desk, and $400.00 worth of art anatomy books stored in the closet, interesting photos believe it or not this dull black and white 1935 edition with it's simplicity, and thorough lessons, your knowledge of anatomy will improve fast, BELIEVE ME THIS IS A MUST BUY...

5-0 out of 5 stars Pick of the Litter
Unless you're doing medical illustration or specializing in highly detailed figure drawing and/or you must invent the figures from scratch constantly, this little anatomy book is the only one you'll need .I've had others and I like this one the best. It's very well done and very clear. The price is right too!
If you're beginning and unsure ,I would start with this, and if you need something else it will become obvious later.Better to have this one first than overspend on something else when you only needed this one.
Have fun with your drawing! ... Read more

Product Description

In our industrialized society, it is often difficult to imagine how the objects around us are made. How, for example, are triple spirals put into the stem of a wine glass or table tops inlaid with whole landscapes of semi-precious stones? This unique dictionary is devoted to the fascinating materials and techniques used in the decorative arts. Materials range from the exotic to the most basic, from rare stones found only in the mountains of Badakshan, unsavory animal products, and the ground bodies of South American insects to ones as common as sand, clay, and lime.

Compiled by a team of experts, each with an intimate knowledge of his or her subject, the entries are written in clear, accessible language and supplemented by numerous photographs and drawings. Each core material (glass, ceramics, textiles, paper, plastics, leather, metal, stone, wood, and paint) is covered from its raw state through any processing or preparation to various craft stages and finally, to any surface finishing.

Traditionally, the kind of information found in these pages has been passed on from craftsman to craftsman or confined to highly specialized books, and even common terms are often misunderstood. This dictionary makes the subject accessible to all—from art and architectural historians, curators, collectors, restoration specialists, artists, and museum staff to decorators, aficionados, and those who enjoy watching Antiques Roadshow. In short, this book is for all those who are intrigued by the materials and techniques used to create the beautiful objects that surround us.
