A flagrantly commercial antihero of thegay, big-city subculture, Warhol offended in so many ways. Hischeerful, absurdist pop images of Campbell's soup cans, JackieKennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and the electric chair made serious subjectmatter with serious meaning a thing of the past. Everything Warhol didmade serious film, painting, drawing, or printmaking look slightlysilly. In an excellent essay in the front of thissmall book, Tretiack places Warhol historically and esthetically,hitting all the high points of Warhol's flamboyant career andstylishly discussing the legacy of this '60s bad boy. The rest of thebook is full of pictures--mostly Warhol's more famous images, but alsosome snapshots of Andy. Missing are a few pictures of Warhol'sgraceful, elegant shoe drawings and recipe illustrations, showing thekind of fine-art facility with which the artist began his career. Butthe rest is packed in here in all its flashy vainglory, including thegreen-tinged picture of a smiling Tricky Dick Nixon with thehand-lettered admonishment "Vote McGovern." The breadth of Warhol's paintings
You can get a excellent sense of Warhol's progress from this book. 1962 seems to have been a decisive years. Before 1962, one can see Warhol's transition from commercial artist and early experimentalism. Beginning sometime in 1962, one sees the emergence of the well-chosen, well-executed images that Warhol is known for.

It seems helpful in understanding his growth to see some of Warhol's less appealing works. Nonetheless, with a total of about 320 pages of images, there are still plenty of Warhol's bettter works to see here.

Four high-quality, significant essays about Warhol open this book. The closing includes a chronology, a "collective portrait" consisting of short contributions from many who knew Warhol well, and "Warhol in his own words", selections that reveal how insightful yet straight-forward Warhol could be.

This seems to be the single best bible of Warhol's paintings. There is a comprehensive collection of Warhol's prints available in "Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne: 1962-1987" which seems prettier but may suffer from excessive prettiness. Warhol's trashier aspects are not apparent, nor is his experimental reach, in the prints. Both books have their appeal, but as a one source collection of Warhol's painting and critical assessments of it this Retrospective seems unparalleled.

For a good exposure to Warhol in all his diversity, "Andy Warhol: 365 Takes" by the staff of the Andy Warhol Museum is also valuable, but to focus on the paintings, this retrospective seems ideal. ... Read more

The Greatness is in the Simplicity
Andy Warhol remains a true Icon of the art world. His famous '15 minutes of fame' was a terrific statement, but in Warhol's case his words and his art linger on in museum retrospectives, in art history studies, and in books on photography, fine print making, and art whether drawn, painted, of screened.

This little book is a treasure.From the opening apropos statement by Alan Cumming, the book is devoted to over 250 works of art by Warhol. His line drawings for the most part are undecorated even with cross-hatching: the single continuous line defines the faces, the bodies, the genitalia, the feet, the lips of his models.These are finely reproduced on several different tones of paper, each a full-page bleed.Then along with little quips from his feisty, shy, and sage mouth are his photographs of men including some self-portraits, some of transsexual friends, some of just beautiful male bodies, some of famous men from history.These photographs are at times followed or paired with the subsequent now famous silkscreen interpretations.Some collages and other experiments with imagery complete the set.

By this time most people including the harshest critics have the consensual opinion that Andy Warhol was a significant figure in American art history.This fine book, very beautifully designed by Azi Rad, is a substantial volume of tribute to the simplicity of Warhol's genius.It belongs in the library of every art collector and everyone who appreciates the male form - especially as much as Warhol obviously did!Highly Recommended.

A Really Exquisite Book!
What a great little book of delights! Here is a really beautiful collection of art by Andy Warhol, many of the works apparently published for the first time. There are color photographs here of men's body parts-- chests, feet, butts, etc.-- a series of color portraits of drag queens labelled "Ladies and Gentlemen", photographs of a few celebrities including Mick Jagger and the artist himself eating a banana. But most of the book is taken up by beautiful line drawings of men-- figures, faces, body parts, even the feet of Christopher Isherwood. Alan Cumming in right on the money in his foreward: "just a simple collection of lines on paper that magically produce a sense memory of something so visceral it can actually arouse." And Mr. Warhol had this thing about body hair! This is a very erotic collection beautifully produced that you will go back to again and again. ... Read more

Is it Art?
Mr. Ganis has undertaken a very difficult task - i.e., to state his opinion about the photographs that existed in Andy Warhol's estate at the time of his death. There were apporoximately 60,000 photographs discovered. In addition, and equally relevant, was the fact that Andy Warhol saved everything. Junk mail, ticket stubs, anything and everything were thrown into card board boxes - that the artist referred to as "time capsules."

Ganis describes the initial valuation of the photographs by Christie's Appraisals, Inc. as low, not only because of the debate of their status as art v. archival material, but also as a 'strategy of lawyers' to keep valuations low for the Andy Warhol Foundation's benefit and to reduce attorney's fees due to Edward Hayes (who had executed a contract to be paid 2% of the value of the estate for his services). This is a conclusion that is absolutely incorrect. As the author of Art In The Courtroom, I have read every transcript related to the underlying hearing in my analysis of the case referred to. The facts are that the Warhol Foundation asked Christie's to review the appraisal of photography because the Foundation, including it's president Archibald Gillies, thought that the values assigned were too low. Christie's appraiser, Rick Wester, stood firm in his decision as to value despite the Foundation's desire to have a higher appraisal. (It was obvious at the time, that a valuation battle would occur, and the Foundation did not want the valuation of photographs to be an easy target for a claim of being undervalued.)

This error by Ganis is absolutely essential in considering the rest of the book.

Warhol had 60,000 photographs in his estate. Warhol was an artist who had an artistic vision that would clearly be revealed in some of the photographs. Warhol, during his lifetime had only exhibited photographs in a single exhibit at Robert Miller Gallery - these were the "sewn photographs" which was an infitesimal portion of the 60,000 photographs. Warhol used photographs as the basis for his prints and his paintings.

Do and should the photgraphs be considered "fine art" or archival material? It is easy to see that one could go through the photographs and pick out exceptional photographs that one might see in an auction catalogue. In fact, the gallery - Pace-McGill purchased a number of Polaroids and sought to sell them. Their initial efforts, pricing the Polaroids at $7,500 was somewhat successful, so they returned to the Foundation to purchase an additional group of photographs, but at a reduced price, because the $7,500 was too high. We see some of these self-portraits, portraits of Truman Capote and others come up for sale at auction ocassionally.

I would absolutely agree that some of Warhol's genious is exemplified in his photography. But, I also question whether something an artist never presented as fine art, should be considered such in hindsight.

Getting back to the appraisal - the question that Rick Wester faced on cross-examination was - do you mean to tell me that you value Warhol's photographs in the same amount of photographs that I might take of the Plaintiff in the case - no more? The answer was yes. The valuation issue was difficult because one would assume that people would pay $10 or $20 per photograph (or more) simply because they were taken by Warhol. But then, wouldn't every scrap of paper in a "time capsule" also have some value - people would purchase an envelope addressed to Warhol for $5. Were the "time capsules" a form of Warhol's art to be discovered only after his death?

The conclusion as to the values of the photographs was not determined in accord to a strategy of attorneys. It was determined by Rick Wester (and his predecssor who had done the initial draft of the appraisal) in accord with their understanding of appraisal methodology and their conslusions as to art v. archival.

The cover of the book exemplifies the problem. It is beautiful. But Andy never said I am taking photographs as fine art (and will sell them in galleries). Is it appropriate to second guess the artist? I would argue that it is not. Thank you. ... Read more
