Editorial Review Product Description In two regions where tourism is of considerable economic importance, eastern Asia and the Pacific, there have been remarkably few studies of the impacts of tourism in rural areas. Moreover, the shift towards ecotourism, touted as a more environmentally benign form of tourism, has extended the reach of tourism into more remote and fragile environments. This shift has drawn more local people in rural and remote areas into a partly tourism economy, involving them as participants in the tourist industry. Yet little is known about who have been the beneficiaries of these developments. This new collection focuses on both the interactions between tourists and villagers, and the impacts of tourism at the local level, considering economic, social, cultural and environmental changes. It traces changes in structures of vulnerability as tourism becomes more prominent, the role of tourism in community development (or localized tension) and examines issues of governance, the role of tour operators as intermediaries, cultural change and other local impacts. In short, it examines the changing role of tourism in local development (or its absence). It includes case studies drawn from a broad geographical area across eastern Asia and the island Pacific. This book will be useful to those researching and studying tourism, geography and development studies. |

Editorial Review Product Description - R.P. Gardella, Choice ‘Once again Joseph Camilleri has written a major work. Drawing on a vast literature, he has compiled a coherent whole out of the innumerable pieces of the vast puzzle that is the Asia Pacific. Conceiving of the area as three regional subsystems, his analysis is an impressive blend of historical, conceptual, and empirical materials that focus on the interplay of geopolitics and geoeconomics in a major part of the world that will substantially shape the course of world affairs in the decades ahead. Camilleri brings a keen understanding of the dynamics of change, democratization, and civil society to bear on both the varieties and uniformities to be found in the Asia-Pacific at the outset of a new century.’ - James N. Rosenau, The George Washington University The twin processes of integration and fragmentation have been the distinguishing features of contemporary globalization. Nowhere is this more strikingly evident than in Asia Pacific. Now in paperback, this first volume of a two-volume study concentrates on the geopolitical and economic transformation of Asia Pacific. Specifically it focuses on the relationship between the decline of ideological bipolarity and dissolution of Cold War alliances on the one hand and the rapid industrialization of East Asia and the tensions generated by the shifts in the global and regional balance of economic interests on the other. Particular attention is devoted to the three major powers (the United States, China and Japan) and to a number of small and middle powers, in particular Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia and Canada. Underpinning the entire analysis is the complex interplay of geopolitics, economy and culture. States, Markets and Civil Society in Asia Pacific is essential reading for scholars and researchers of Asia Pacific politics and economy. The coherent analysis will also ensure the books appeal to those in NGOs and government agencies affected by, or working in, the region. |

Manohar Pawar familiarizes readers with the region, presents the major social, economic and political issues, looks at values and principles, and critically analyses challenges and shows opportunities for community development practice in the region. This book will allow for anyone interested in community development both at local and global levels – scholars, non-government organizations (NGOs), government organisations, international aid agencies – to gain a broad understating of community development trends in the Asia-Pacific region. |

A number of the chapters examine the entire region while others focus exclusively on a nation or industry. Several chapters study the causes and consequences of the financial crises in the region in 1997 from a recent historical perspective.
