Product Description

The relationship between trade policy and economic performance is one of the oldest controversies in economic development. In recent years, there has been a revival of interest in the debate on the implications of trade reforms for productivity growth and domestic pricing behaviour due in part to the current phase of wide-spread trade liberalisation in developing countries and in part to developments in economic theory, notably endogenous growth theories and theories of imperfect competition. Also, there has been considerable interest in whether trade reforms can lead to higher wage inequality and regional inequality in developing countries. Both in academic and policy arenas the interest in international trade as a powerful positive force for reducing poverty in low-income countries has increased. In this book, the author examines the implications of trade reforms with specific reference to the Indian manufacturing sector. In particular, it explores the evolution of regional and wage inequality, employment, productivity and prices from the import substitution phase of the 1970s to the period of radical reforms of the 1990s. The strength of the book is the careful and systematic examination of the various aspects of the trade-development nexus using rigorous empirical methods and a detailed data-set of Indian industries from 1975 to 2000. Economists in general and South Asian scholars in particular will find this thorough study interesting and useful.

Product Description
Looking at an area of French trade in Asia in the first half of the 18th century, this text relates French Asian traders to their social, regional and financial roots and traces their connection with other Indian commercial groups, both European and Asian. The analysis stresses the importance of the Indian context and shows that the economic and political developments in south India were of crucial significance in the French move from trade to war in the 1740s. Finally, the book examines why the French failed. ... Read more

Product Description
China's seaborne trade in the early modern period consisted of three sectors - government trade, tribute trade and private trade. The first two were particularly active in the early 15th century, whereas private sea trade, both legal and illegal, was more dominant in later periods. The articles in the first part of this book mainly feature the early 15th century. They discuss structural issues and also deal with Cheng Ho's voyages into the Indian Ocean and the later accounts of this. The next part surveys the period dominated by private trade, with comparisons between the Chinese and the Portuguese trading systems. Part Three discusses views of the "other", in this case Chinese views of maritime Asia. This involves detailed investigations of ethnographic accounts and aims to show that much work hitherto taken at face value by historians, should be reinvestigated in the light of sinocentric ideas and traditional Chinese rhetoric. ... This study eschews the uncritical acceptance of secondary sources that has characterized studies in this field, going back to and reinterpreting previously neglected primary sources, thereby enabling it to chart linkages between the European and Asian trades that have been regarded as parallel but unrelated (or at best competing) activities. In so doing, the work sheds new light on this crucial period. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the first in-depth treatment in English of Japanese lawand practice governing unfair competition. The author analyzes theinteraction of the relevant laws - and the case law derived from each- to present a systematic description of how business reputation,trade secrets, well-known marks, and other aspects of businessachievement and investment are protected against undue exploitation inJapan.

Prohibited acts of unfair competition covered include:
+misappropriation by confusion or passing-off;
+ misappropriation through breach of trust or fiduciary duty;
+ slavish imitation of distinct product features;
+trade mark piracy;
+tortious acts of denigration, libel, and slander;
+direct interference by, e.g., boycott or bribery;
+undue exercise of intellectual property rights; and
+misleading indications on goods and services (e.g., ofgeographical origin).

Several problematic areas - in particular, the obstacles toeffective enforcement, and the lack of adequate protection forconsumers against acts of unfair competition - are given particularemphasis. The book concludes with cogent proposals on how the Japanesesystem could be improved and developed, referring to the modelprovisions of the World Intellectual Property Organization andoffering a new and original draft Unfair Competition Act. Any business person or investor interested in the Japanese market willbenefit enormously from this practical and insightful volume. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Salt Water Would Not Quench Louis' Thrist for Gloire.
After the surrender at Yorktown, it seemed that Britan's Atlantic superiority was at an end. However, Nelson's great victory in Egypt made it perfectly clear that naval power is far more than faster ships and better cannon. Britain, in the course of modern European history, met and overcamemany naval challenges in establishment of its empire. In retrospect, it istaken for granted that sea power is married to economic strength, but whenColbert proposed his plan for ocean gloire to Louis XIV it was genuinelynew and original. He recognized an opportunity to compete successfullyagainst Holland in and around the Indian Ocean and Japan. His idea wasimmediately adopted, but on the short term it seemed a disappointingfailure. Ames advances an argument that perhaps one crucial sea battle in1672 might have changed history, by establishing the French East Companybefore the Britsh were able to supplant the Dutch there. However, perhaps aresult of treachery, the battle never happened. Ames' documentary accountprovokes the reader to speculate upon alternate lines of history, whilepresenting some great men of the past in a throughly sociable fashion. Hisfirst book is an excellent balance between History as it was and History asit might have been.

Product Description
`This book serves as an important guide to the many fascinating research questions about Asian business waiting to be addressed. The study of Asian business has reached equality in importance to the study of business in Europe and North America. Researchers who study any of these regions have an incentive to follow the study of business in the other regions, if for no other reason than that many global firms from each region operate in all regions now. Nonetheless, the more important reason for knowledge transfer among researchers of each region is that these exchanges can only advance everyone's research. Henry Yeung and the contributors are to be thanked for setting out a rich agenda for research on Asian business that will elevate this study to equality with research elsewhere in the world.'
- Eurasian Geography and Economics

`. . . this book is extremely comprehensive and well researched. It will be of particular interest to scholars in the fields of international business, development studies, economic geography, regional studies as well as international and national policymakers.'
- Science Technology & Society

The rise of Asia as an important region for global business has been widely recognized as one of the most significant economic phenomena in the new millennium. This accessible and comprehensive Handbook brings together state-of-the-art reviews of Asian business in an expansive range of areas including:

* business organizations
* strategic management
* marketing
* state-business relations
* business and development
* business policy issues.

It is argued that whilst academic studies on Asian business have been in existence for over two decades, there is relatively little systematic integration of our knowledge and research on Asian business. The contributors, drawn from a variety of disciplines within the social sciences, aim to redress the balance with their lively, cutting-edge discussion.

Serving as a timely overview of more than two decades of scholarly research, this Handbook will be an essential resource for academics, students and researchers interested in Asian business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" for college library reference shelves
Handbook of Research on Asian Business is a collection of scholarly essays by learned authors reviewing aspects of Asian business - the culture, strategy, and practice found in such rising economic powers as China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, and more. A handful of black-and-white charts and graphs illustrate the exhaustive research fueling these meticulous analyses discussing business strategy and organization, marketing, business-state relations, policy issues and more. "In order to make a successful entry into China, multinationals have to overcome barriers and constraints such as market diversity, local protectionism, relationship development and competitive context (Walters and Samiee, 2003). China has evolved into a nation of 'two countries' that consist of a coastal urban megalopolis of 400 million people who can afford luxuries, and a vast 'Third World' interior of 900 million people who can hardly make a living (Powell, 2002). Domestic-oriented FDI firms repeatedly discover that provincial and city authorities impose numerous protection mechanisms to support local firms in competing with their rivals based in other regions of China." An absolute "must-have" for college library reference shelves, filled cover-to-cover with keen analyses that any businessperson seeking to make inroads in an Asian market needs to study at length! ...
