Product Description
Exploring the transitional role of the state in Taiwan's economic development, this book moves beyond the "strong state" paradigm, focusing especially on the impact of trade with mainland China. Providing an irresistible business opportunity, cross-Straits trade and investment have served as a fulcrum by which societal interests have moved an unwilling state. Weighing the crucial forces at work-democratization, state-society interaction, and economic interdependence with mainland China-Leng offers a thorough analysis of Taiwan's current and future political and economic development. ... Product Description

The Asian continent has a maritime tradition spanning as far back as the third millennium BC, and its port cities have for centuries had a social and cultural character radically different from those on the shores of the Atlantic.

A fresh and innovative perspective on Asian history, economic development, and urbanization,Gateways of Asia focuses on the vital role played by ports and port cities across the centuries. The authors explore these cities as links to each other and to the outside world, as meeting grounds of indigenous and overseas cultures and as the stageposts for struggles of expansion, imperialism, and colonialism.

A range of multidisciplinary studies discuss cities including Bangkok, Kobe, Kuwait, Bombay, Banten, and Vladivostok from the thirteenth century to the present. Reflecting on both the influences of modernization and Westernization and the impact of traditional, inland cultures on the development of these cities, Gateways of Asia is a significant chapter in the understanding of multicultural interaction over history, from the vantage point of the contemporary global village.

Product Description

This book reviews how China’s accession to the WTO has impacted upon its education, environment, economic and social outcomes in recent years. It has been argued that China’s rapid growth in output and exports and subsequent accession to WTO has significantly increased income and therefore the well-being of the Chinese population. However, doubts are now being raised that higher income is generated at the cost of deteriorating environmental and social standards which has increasingly affected the health of the Chinese people, especially those who live in major industrial cities. Also, there is a widespread perception that its accession to WTO has significantly increased social shocks, especially among the farming community, and contributed to poor health outcomes among the rural population. These issues are critically analyzed in this book by experienced academics from China and Australia.

This book is the product of collaboration between academic and non-academic experts; a group of scholars - mostly Japanese but including some foreign scholars - specialized in law, politics, and economics have been joined by practitioners who have been engaged in negotiations and other work at or for the WTO to discuss the nature and structure of the WTO in due consideration of various circumstances surrounding the WTO. Prior to the completion of this book, relevant seminars and international symposiums were held in several occasions. Such a comprehensive set of works of researchers of Japan, a country that takes proud in its unparalleled strong commitment to the WTO, has been rarely published in English before. It is hoped that analysis and considerations on the meaning and significance of the WTO provided in this book will make some contribution to international study on the WTO and trade policies. ... Product Description
This study examines the influence of commercial interests on the expansion of the British Empire in Western India in the age of Cornwallis and Wellesley. It questions some of the assumptions which have been accepted as explanations of British imperialism in that part of India. The chief of these is that the reform of the East India Company's administration in the 1780s brought the policy of the Bombay presidency under the firm control of the governor-general in Bengal and of the Court of Directors and the Board of Control in London. ... Product Description
The continuing spread of free trade agreements (FTAs) in the developing world particularly in Asia has spurred intense debate. Viewed against the backdrop of slow progress in global trade talks, FTAs can promote continued trade liberalization, induce structural reforms in the economies concerned, and widen market access across a vibrant economic region, where the demand for greater intra-regional trade is rapidly increasing. On the other hand, the proliferation of bilateral FTAs can create the so called "noodle bowl" effect as multiple rules of origin arising from overlapping agreements cause harm particularly to small and medium enterprises with limited capacity to comply with FTAs. The resulting market fragmentation would be more costly even for major multinational companies because of rising transaction costs and regulatory barriers. The flow of foreign direct investment and the associated transfer of technology and know-how to smaller economies would also decline.Nevertheless, FTAs are a growing reality. ... Read more

Product Description
The services and manufacturing sectors were the key drivers of Indias recent impressive growth performance, with major contribution from growing domestic demand. Consequently, issues pertaining to the role of trade and private sector in sustaining growth momentum and facilitating infrastructure development in India have come to the forefront.

This volume deals with critical issues concerning trade policy, industrial performance, and private sector development in India. It discusses the infrastructure bottlenecks that have constrained high growth in manufacturing and in the services sector and highlights that inadequate infrastructure impedes growth of exports and that the public sector alone cannot meet investment requirements. Hence, there is an urgent need to provide an enabling environment to promote the private sector.

The volume also addresses urgent issues constraining manufacturing growth and exports. These include the role of small scale sectors in supporting growth and exports and non-tariff barriers in Indias export destinations.

Finally, it underlines the ongoing debate to understand the link between trade and income distribution. This is an important issue in India because the Eleventh Five Year Plan emphasizes not just high growth but inclusive growth. ... Read more

In mid-1997, a major crisis embraced the economies of Southeast Asia. Its effects were severe, particularly on the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, many of whose currencies suffered market devaluations. From the author: The purpose of this article is to empirically investigate how the Research and Development (R&D) capital formation in developed countries affects the productivity of East Asian economies. Using a data set of seven East Asian economies (Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand), it is found that the international R&D spillovers from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries promote the total factor productivity (TFP) of sample economies. Moreover, the results show that the international R&D spillovers correlate with international trade, particularly with manufacturing goods imports. It follows from these results that the process of economic growth in East Asian economies has accompanied the international R&D spillovers through international trade expansion.

From the supplier: A study conducted by the UN International Trade Center reveals that import of fruit juice in the eight major Asian markets amounted to $683 million in 1994, which is 14% of the global total. The study also shows that juice imports increased 78% in value between 1990 and 1994, primarily due to the removal of quotas in Japan in 1992 and relaxation of trade barriers in Korea. Japan dominated juice imports in Asia, buying $448.6 million for 1994. It was followed by Korea, which racked up imports of $115.1 million.

Product Description
This pioneering work from a member of Malaysia's new generation of historians is a tale of two very different cities, the one with a trading heritage dating back centuries, the other a new creation spawned by the declining fortunes of the once mighty Dutch East India Company. Melaka was an important commercial entrepot on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula long before it fell to Portuguese forces in 1511, but thereafter began an extended process of decline that would continue after the Dutch conquest of the city in 1641. Penang became a significant port after 1786 when 'country traders' created a base on the island to defy the Dutch monopoly, although it was quickly overshadowed by Singapore after the founding of a British settlement there in 1819.Drawing on a large volume of archival records, many of them not used by earlier historians, "Trade and Society in the Straits of Melaka" examines the social and economic fabric of these two port cities, the one very much a Dutch town and the other British. Along the way, the author deals with a number of key questions. Did colonial port cities have a different character and structure from indigenous towns?Did the administrative style of the Dutch and English differ substantially? What was the economic basis of Melaka and Penang? What was the effect of the European presence on indigenous trade and society? The answers involve considerations of urban morphology, demographic characteristics and migration, property rights, and slave ownership. The author also provides a detailed account of shipping in the Straits of Melaka, and discusses how this information contributes to debates concerning the decline of the region's 'Age of Commerce' in the face of imperialist competition.By documenting the impact of imperialist ambitions on the economy and society of two major trading centres, this book breaks new ground and will provide a point of reference for all future research concerning the period. 'This is a genuine pioneering study of Malaysian urban history that breaks much new ground. At its best it is a fine-grained social history of which we have seen far too little in Southeast Asia.' - Professor Tony Reid, Director, Asia Research Institute, Singapore. ... Read more
