Almost a Grade-A Guide to Grading
While it may not seem like it to students, grading is a very complex exercise for teachers and instructors. Anyone hoping to go into that line of work will have to learn about how complex and uncertain the art of grading can be, and this book is a strong compendium of current theory on such matters. An especially valuable aspect of this book is its coverage of the different schools of thought on whether grading is really an accurate assessment tool at all, and how all parties in the education process (students, teachers, administrators, parents, employers) have different conceptions of the usefulness and value of grades. But while this book is hugely informative at the practical level, beware of a few larger theoretical weaknesses. Frequently, certain practices that are currently held in high esteem become overused examples of larger concepts. The most glaring example is the inaccurately-titled chapter "Establishing Criteria and Standards for Grading" which is entirely about just one method, Primary Trait Analysis. At a higher level, this book assumes that all instructors will have the privilege of smaller class sizes, or welcoming administrative environments, in which experimenting with grading methods is possible or practical at all. Meanwhile this book (and many others like it) fails to distinguish between future advancements in theory and the real world in which such theories and practices have yet to be implemented on any appreciable scale. A book every teacher should read

Excellent resource for college teachers
I admit I was skeptical when I started this book--so many pedagogically oriented texts seem to sacrifice content and standards for "feel-good" solutions to education. However, I have found thisbook to offer excellent suggestions for every aspect of structuring classesto teach and evaluate what you most want your students to learn. In mycollege English classes, I've used variations of Primary Trait Analyses andGateway Criteria and they have made a big difference in the levels ofthinking and writing in my own students. Giving students specificguidelines allows them to focus on what's important about the assignment,set their priorities appropriately, and makes things much easier for mewhen the time comes for grading. You can find something better
I bought this exercise book for my son. I let him do the test by himself and then we go over it together. He keeps complaining all the answers are next to the questions. (It's just right in front of his face). It's loss challenge for him. I have to buy him another book. We prefer the answer print at the back of the book.

effective test prep
This book is a must for the New York state test. It covers all the test content from listening, reading, to writing. In each section, the book has concise reviews highlighting the most tested topics. It provides solid test preparing strategies and tips in each area with guided practices. At the end, it gives two complete sample tests that are very similar to the real ones. It's very effective for my son.

Note that this book assumes you know the basics and pushes you to achieve higher scores. So, use this book two weeks before you take the exam. For day to day practice, we find the Beestar web site (www.beestar.org) has similar tests. They build the broader fundamentals. This book will sharpen the saw for you.

Opinion of Classroom Assessment Techniques
Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) is a great resource for K-12 teachers and university faculty. The authors provide a variety of quick, user friendly assessments to be used in minutes in order to assess student learning in a classroom environment. I used several with my university pre-service teachers. They were impressed and used them in their classrooms.

A very useful work
I was first introduced to this work while studying for my MS in Curriculum & Instruction at PSU.Although it is entitled "A Handbook for College Teachers," I have found applications for the assessment techniques at all levels that I have taught, ranging K-Adult Ed. This book is a handbook-style text that elaborates on the concept of "Classroom Assessment Techniques," a term used by the authors to refer to alternative methods of evaluating or assessing student learning.The book is a handbook because each "CAT" is listed in terms of how to prepare, use, and evaluate results; the authors also present rather subjective indicants of the amount of time required for each technique.

The techniques range from the laughably simple (such as "muddiest point") to the more involved (such as student learning portfolios); the handbook is arranged in terms of types of assessment that may be conducted with each group of techniques.The book provides a wide variety of techniques, and the user should be able to find several applicable techniques for a particular educational situation.
