5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for counselors, teachers, and school administrators working with their at-risk student populations
There is a renewed interest in preventing students from prematurely dropping out of school -- if only because our cratering economy and our need to compete in a global market necessitates the best trained and educated workforce we can muster. Now in an expanded and updated second edition, "Helping At-Risk Students: A Group Counseling Approach For Grades 6-9" by Jill Waterman (Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles) and Elizabeth Walker (a clinical psychologist specializing in economically disadvantaged and ethnically diverse high school students in Denver, Colorado) is an introduction and instruction guide to utilizing the 'SPARK' program as part of a group counseling approach to helping students at risk of under performing and dropping out of school. Enhanced with 36 reproducible handouts and forms (plus Spanish language versions of 32 of these handouts), "Helping At-Risk Students" provides the reader with field-tested at-risk counseling strategies; a new module on male-female relationships; new sessions on emotion regulation, communication, and relational aggression; strategies for whole-class implementation of at-risk student programs; and 68 reprocudibles of which almost half are new to this revised addition. Thoroughly 'user friendly', "Helping At-Risk Students" is highly recommended for counselors, teachers, and school administrators working with their at-risk student populations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Education System At Crisis Point
I applaud Elizabeth Blake, for making a career change for all the right reasons to educate our children. After 20 years working in the field of medical science, a job that she loved, it was time for a change.

The author takes on the challenging role of teaching science at a tough, inner-city high school. She was relentless in her quest to find a way to reach her at-risk students. I admire her sheer guts and determination when faced with the difficult realities of her new position. Shootings, drugs, gangs are just some of the obstacles making her job difficult. "No Child Left Behind" is indeed a compelling true story highlighting the disappointing state of our school system.

I strongly recommend this book to all who care about our children.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story
Elizabeth Blake's story, as recounted in the pages of her book, is one throughout which I was constantly asking "What next!?". The events she describes sometimes beggar belief. I found myself incredulously thinking "How could people in responsible positions behave like that?" only to find, on subsequent pages, there was worse to come. That Elizabeth found ways to deal with the many difficult situations she encountered, to push herself further than many would have gone, and not to give up without a fight in the face of overwhelming adversity, is a testament to her strength of character.

The book may be in need, here and there, of a good editor's attention - it's a little rough around the edges in places - but what it lacks in polished writing is made up for in the content of her absorbing story. I constantly wanted to know what happened next.

I feel I should also point out that those who don't share Elizabeth's belief that a god (she spells it with a capital G) has a plan for every individual, might find her assertions in that area a little off-putting. But whatever a person's beliefs may be, there is no denying that Elizabeth's helped her not only deal with some very difficult situations at the time, but also enabled her to find a way to continue doing her utmost to ensure that no child she taught was left behind, even though, despite having sometimes gone an extra five miles, let alone one, she was not always successful.

Whatever else you may get from reading her book, Elizabeth's personal story shows that there is hope for humanity.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Frustration and Triumph of Teaching
No Child Left Behind? The True Story of a Teacher's Quest is a poignant read. It took me back to the years I spent teaching in South Phoenix. I re-experienced my own frustration and despair at attempting to triumph despite a broken system. I love the irony built into the title. Beth is right. We are failing our students, leaving many incapable of succeeding in our society. If only all students could rise above the challenges like some of her glory stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Victims of Education
As a former school administrator who has also experienced what this author wrote about, I relish this book.Blake writes an informative account of the victims of education: students, parents, administrators, and teachers.Until we as caring citizens do something about bringing back a change to the way we teach our children, I'm afraid it will continue to get worse.

Thank goodness for people like this author who has been willing to make a public stand. It's a brave one, and, hopefully, somebody up there listens and asks "what on earth are we doing to our children"?

Good book! I HIGHLY recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars No Child Left Behind? The True Story of a Teacher's Quest
This is an inspirational story about an inner-city teacher who fights many obstacles, winning some and losing others. But it's not a book just for teachers. People wanting to read about Triumph Over Adversity and apply it to their lives will want to read this book. It's an incredible story of courage. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money or precious time
I was looking for a book I could have the staff at my new charter school reading as a basis for professional discussion. This book is a waste of valuable time. It simply reviews other people's research and gives no conclusive findings. Many of the studies it reviews are numerically insignificant, making the data suspicious at best, invalid and unreliable at worst. If you've taught for more than a week you already know what this book purports--structured lessons, small group instruction, tutoring and computer-aided instruction all work if used correctly. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, interesting and informative
This book was needed for a special education course, but there is a new edition/version of this book out that I was required to purchase for the course. I made the mistake and bought this version. The newer edition has chapters in a slightly different order and more example lessons, but there is supplemental information on this book online by the publisher including questions to make sure that you are understanding to assist anyone.
I would recommend this edition or the newer edition of the book.

I was very unhappy with this product. I ordered this book on January 7, 2010 the current date it February 11, 2010 and I have not got my book in the mail!!!! I do not plan on buying products from Amazon any more when they lose the products that I have purchased, it is not right for them to make a profit off of me when I do not receive what I paid for!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for every teacher
A good book for every teacher, young or old, experienced or not, because even though we know or should know the basics of this topic; it helps to be educated, re-educated and reminded of these special students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed My Perspective; I Plan To Change Theirs
No book about "at risk" students that I have read has captured the reality of school FROM THE STUDENT'S INNER WORLD as accurately and surprisingly as this book.To get the most out of the book, I utilized the unique ANNOTATED Table Of Contents.I grouped the chapters in a way that I could first understand the author's special gift of identifying with students who "don't, won't and can't" learn what we are teaching. Then, I put together a cluster of chapters which proved that this author has been in the real world. He describes approaches that DO NOT WORK.I then read four chapters that provided a sort of road map for providing approaches THAT DO WORK with such students.I have met with teachers and parents throughout the country who struggle daily with the so-called "at risk" youngster. This is the first book that includes an extensive, down-to-earth chapter FOR PARENTS whose struggle is 24/7.What a great benefit to be able to say, "Read this book. You'll begin to solve your specific problems with some how-to-go-about-it advice that comes from someone who has truly been there and honestly done that."This is not an academic or research-jargon book. This book is for the adventurous adult who dares get into the head of a student who is "at risk of not being taught" and is willing to start with the kid's perspective to begin making an even greater positive difference than ever before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviewer K. Trent Didn't Even Read the Cover
A letter to Reviewer, K. Trent from Author, Bill Page

What is amazing is that you read 280 pages with 31 independent articles and say "never gives a solution to try". I request a re-read at least of the cover.

The subtitle on the cover of my book reveals "the solutions" to the At-Risk Student Problems. Feeling Their Pain, (Walking in their moccasins--empathisizing)
Accepting their Plight, (Compassion for their embarrassment and discomfiture)
Understanding their defensive ploys (Recognizing misbehavior as defense mechaniams to cover their loss of dignity and acceptance)--ARE the solutions to the at-risk problems. The book explains and reinforces these solutions.

The notorious at-risk behaviors of apathy, hostility, and misbehavior, etc are symptoms, not causes of the problem.Solutions, as my book explains, lie in attitude and relationship, not the usual carrot-and-stick gimmicks offered by so many other at-risk books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont waste your money.
It is amazing how a book can be published that does not offer solutions to the problem. The book raves on and on about accomplishments but never gives a solution to try.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Risk are Worth the Risk
I would recommend this book to any person involved with helping at risk youth. It has a tremendously easy to read format which guides the reader through the struggles of the at risk child.Sagor begins by educating the reader about the at risk child.Through Chapter 1 the reader understands better what the child experiences and gets an inkling of what the child must feel.

Step by step the reader is taken through the process as an individual, as an educator, as a provider of self worth.Sagor extends that to a school wide idea and even further to the community.

As a professional who works with at risk children, I feel very grateful to have the opportunity to read this kind of text.It is written in such a way that the reader is comforable moving from one step to another. The concepts are affirmed by others in the field and supported by research.

If more people would read this book, we would have a huge decrease in kids deemed at risk.

This book should be on the nightstand of every educator, social worker, counselor, and youth director.

I loved it and use it weekly! ... Read more

The book includes 5 tables, 14 color plates, and 7 appendices and is divided into six sections: Adolescence, Alternative Schools, Alternative Edu-cation Programs, Emotions and Learning, Art Therapy in the Schools, and Implementation of the Art Therapy Program. The book is designed for graduate art therapy students, professional art therapists, educators, counselors, school psychologists, social workers, and individuals interested in the application of art therapy. It is organized as follows: Chapter 1, Adolescence, examines the developmental period of adolescence—the physical, cognitive, moral, social, emotional, and creative components. Chapter 2, Alternative Schools, traces the evolution of the alternative schools movement from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to the present. Chapter 3, Alternative Education Programs, explores the dual catalysts for policymakers to embrace alternative education, which are the desire to increase graduation rates and the need to eliminate disruptive or violent students from the classroom without sending them into the streets. Chapter 4, Emotions and Learning, provides insight into the psychobiology of emotion and its impact on learning. Chapter 5, Art Therapy in the Schools, focuses on the field of school art therapy. Chapter 6, Implementation of the Art Therapy Program, presents an effective proposal for the introduction and implementation of a viable art therapy program within an alternative learning environment. The book will provide practitioners with valuable insights into this unique population of students and offer intervention strategies that will lead students at risk to creative self-expression and ultimately into cognitive, social, and emotional growth. ... Product Description
What is your perception of at-risk students? A rural African-American man? A legally blind Georgia girl? A poor Pakistani immigrant? Rosa Aronson tells the stories of these and four other students, uncovering how very different at-risk achievers have overcome the odds stacked against them. Through seven narratives, Aronson analyzes their collective experiences. She offers recommendations for change in today's educational system based upon their journeys and the research of other overcomers such as Richard Rodriguez and Victor Frankl. A powerful book, "At-Risk Students Defy the Odds" brings to light the issues of poverty and race that affect education today, and provides hope for change. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed book for class
I needed a later edition for this book, but decided to save some money and get this one. I made a good choice because we haven't really even used the book in my class. Even if I don't use it for my class, this book is filled with a lot of great information regarding teaching students with special needs. I will probably refer back to it in the future when I have my own class.
