4-0 out of 5 stars Great PsychoEd Lit for Youngsters and Adults
I am a social work currently working with a population of children who struggle biologically, emotionally, and behaviorally. It is hard to find good child friendly literature that deal with ADHD. I'm glad I found Putting on the Brakes. It covers many things my kids wonder about and then some. Putting on teh Brakes includes chapters defining the diagnosis, discussing the science behind it, the common feelings one my have, and problem solving. My clients enjoyed the book and especially loved the analogy of ADHD to a car without brakes. (One of my clients is obsessed with cars). However, it delves too much into the science and lacks the active problem solving and skill building that the corresponding work book has. Over all, Putting on the Brakes answers questions and opens the door for great communication between you and your kids, who may struggle with their diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great
I work with kids every day with ADHD and this book is a great addition to use along with the workbook that goes along with this book. This and the activity book are a great tool for practice!!!

Written very well for both young people and adults.Offers realistic solutions for everyday problems that those with ADHD face.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book moved me to tears
I came across this book in a local children's hospital resource library. The first page describes a speeding race car with no brakes, and how it might go off the road or even crash.Page two goes on to draw a parellel between this race car, and and explains that having ADHD is a lot like being a race car with no brakes, 'You have a great engine with lots of thinking power, and a good, strong body, but no brakes'.I broke down crying right there in the middle of the library - it was like finally getting inside my child's head and knowing how he feels and why he just doesn't seem to know when to quit.

As my son and I read it together, he was also drawn in by these parallels, and fascinated by the sections that explain how the brain works, and the theories behind what causes neurobiological ADHD (as opposed to other possible causes of ADHD, like head trauma, lead exposure, etc).He is seven, and there were several words he was not familiar with, but the book explains 'synapses' and 'neurotransmitters' well, and a brief explanation from me on other vocab words was all it took for him to grasp the concepts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, Can-do Guide for the Perplexed
I've read much on ADHD, but if I were only reading one book, I would pick this book.Straight forward, well organized, empathetic, thorough, and realistic, this guide provides a road map to success.Additionally, the medication and legal issues sections will serve as handy and quick references.Quinn has provided the ADD student and parent with an outstanding guide book.

5-0 out of 5 stars useful and well presented
I learned alot form this quick read. I am the mother of a 16 year old girl recently diagnosed with ADD. I learned that much of my frustration with my daughter is really frustration with her ADD. Good info on coping strategies and resources, and an especially nice chapter about ADD as it manifests for girls, as opposed to boys.
My daughter also enjoyed reading itand it helped to improve her self esteem, reinforcing that much of the frustration she has faced was the result of her ADD, and there are ways to work with this so she can enjoy more success in her life.
This book was recommended by the psychologist we worked with.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read more like a pamphlet than a book...
which, given its target audience, could be a good thing?

Either way, I got *very* little new information out of this book... and I'm no expert... I've only spent a few hours looking ADD up online.

If you need something to tell a student with ADD what ADD is like (as if they wouldn't know), and offer some overly obvious solutions... this is your book... or pamphlet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Profoundly Disappointing
This book is, at best, an intro to ADHD.I bought it hoping that there would be some specific "how to study" tips for highschool and college students with AD/HD, but there is nothing of the sort.In fact, there is very little in this book that isn't found in other books written for children or adults. The chapter, "Legal rights of students with ADD" is useful and relevant, but that is 10 pages out of a 150.

There are two other annoying things about this book.First, Quinn uses the term 'ADD', which has been scientifically obsolete since the 1980s.Second, Quinn's writing style is somewhat condescending.

I would recommend that a person new to their diagnosis, or even somebody who is old hand, read "You Mean I'm not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy?"as opposed to this book.

Product Description
An estimated seven million American adults have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Understanding and Treating Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder provides accurate, timely information about the nature and treatment of this disorder. Written in a collegial style, this resource combines evidence-based material with clinical experience to address problems in diagnosing and treating adults with ADHD. Dr. Doyle shows how diagnostic and treatment methods in children with ADHD also apply to affected adults. He examines the role of medications, including new agents that expand the range of therapeutic choices.
Understanding the evolution of the concept and treatment of ADHD in children illuminates current thinking about the disorder in adults. Dr. Doyle presents guidelines for establishing a valid diagnosis, including clinical interviews and standardized rating scales. He covers genetic and biochemical bases of the disorder. He also addresses the special challenges of forming a therapeutic alliance—working with "coach" caregivers; cultural, ethnic, and racial issues; legal considerations; and countertransference issues.
He explores a range of options for treating adult ADHD:

  • Detailed facts about using medication, with specific information on both CNS stimulants and nonstimulant medications. He also discusses highly touted medications that are actually ineffective.
  • Full coverage of comprehensive treatment approaches beyond medication—focusing on cognitive behavioral therapies, among others. He uses a detailed clinical example drawn from several patients to illustrate issues involved in treating ADHD adults over time.
  • Complete review of conditions that may require treatment before ADHD can be addressed. Many ADHD adults struggle with comorbid anxiety, affective disorders, and substance abuse. Dr. Doyle explains how overlooked ADHD can complicate the treatment of other disorders. He provides strategies for the patient with medication-resistant or treatment-refractory ADHD.
The book provides in-depth discussion of such issues as the impact of ADHD in the workplace, including steps for maximizing job satisfaction; special considerations related to women; and the effect of ADHD on families. A useful appendix helps readers and patients find reliable information about ADHD on the Internet, allowing clinicians to develop an "e-prescription" to supplement medication and other interventions.
Dr. Doyle advocates the promise of enhanced life prospects for adults with ADHD that effective treatment provides. Besides addressing the special challenges of ADHD adults, Dr. Doyle conveys the rewards of working with patients who prove resourceful, creative, and persistent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Professionals and Lay-Readers!
A thousand thanks for this excellent text, Dr Doyle!

It is rare indeed to find a book that provides vital, up-to-date information for the busy practitioner AND is so clearly written that it is easily understandable for the lay-reader. Tis book accomplishes both with a crisp writing style that is consistently clear, informative and engaging throughout.

Well-referenced chapters review the diagnosis, biological basis and comprehensive treatment of this increasingly identified disorder.
Dr Doyle even-handedly covers the many controversies that still surround ADHD in Adults. Especially helpful to the clinician is the chapter on managing Co morbid and Treatment Refractory ADHD. The section on "Work, Women and Family" even includes a very informative evaluation of "ADHD-Friendly Work"

Dr Doyle has masterfully written a handy and helpful reference for busy clinicians treating Adults with ADHD. Impressively, this text is also easily accessible to the non-professional or family member who is trying to understand and cope with the complexities and consequences of this challenging disorder.

I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with ADHD!

5-0 out of 5 stars What The Doctor Ordered
Dr. Doyle's book is "just what the doctor ordered" for those of us who may be confused by the debate over whether Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is overdiagnosed. This book clearly defines ADHD from the disorder's biological basis and behavioral manifestations to an analysis of the medications in terms of what does and does not work in given instances, to the various pychological interventions, and even to a celebration of some of the unique talents of the ADHD-affected individual. While the book is addressed to adult ADHD, it is so comprehensive that the reader can understand ADHD on all levels--both juvenile and adult.
Perhaps more importantly, the book is a good read.Dr. Doyle uses vivid patient stories to illustrate his points. These stories are so engrossing that the person who recommended this book to me confessed that she had skipped the scientific analysis on more more than one occasion to get to the end of one of the stories.
I found myself in the opposite quandry when, for my next book, I chose Mark Haddon's novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," about an autistic boy.I loved the novel, but found myself longing for it to have an in-depth appendix by Dr. Doyle to give me the same careful understanding of autism that I now have of ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Anyone Interested in ADHD
Although this book appears to be aimed at psychiatrists and mental health professionals, most of it is quite accessible to the lay person like myself. I like professional journals and books because I want details and depth, but they are usually crammed with overly technical terms and very dry.

Dr. Doyle's book is the rare exception: a comprehensive, professional-level work that is actually enjoyable to read. His style is almost conversational, and although he presents a lot of technical information, I never felt like I was slogging through a textbook. Unfamiliar terms are clearly explained, and every chapter is sprinkled with specific references to groups, associations, websites and other books where you can get more information.

The chapters on medications provide the best review of currently prescribed ADHD drugs I've ever seen, in print or online. Doyle clearly explains each class of drug and how it works, and discusses critical issues like side effects, interactions, and precautions. Again, though written for doctors, this material will be very helpful for patients and families.

Doyle's approach to ADHD is sensibly holistic: he emphasizes the importance of each patient's uniqueness, and discusses the impact of factors like age, gender, ethnicity etc. And his survey of treatment options goes beyond traditional psychotherapy and medication to include ADHD "coaching," cognitive-behavioral therapy, and what he calls "environmental interventions" (making changes in one's social or work settings).

Doyle suggests that, once you've found a way to manage disruptive symptoms, it's wise to consider lifestyle and career choices that are compatible with adult ADHD. In this area (and throughout the book) he offers relevant examples drawn from his years of psychiatric practice. I found these stories fascinating, and they're a big part of what makes this book so engaging.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite
BRAVO!! Dr. Doyle's style of writing is enormously engaging and a quick read, despite the comprehensive and scholarly nature of the book. When I first picked it up, I actually found that I couldn't put the book down, as if it was a well-written novel.

He doesn't JUST describe the issues. He usually gives GREAT vignettes or examples of actual people or composites of those he's known who are dealing with difficulties and under certain situations (work, home, etc.). So, the images of people and their issues are very vividly portrayed.

I highly recommend the book to my psychology graduate students who will be treating adults with ADHD. In fact when students ask me, "How does ADD manifest itself" (like in young women who aren't necessarily hyper), I refer them to this book. As well, I think the book is appropriate for many patients and their loved ones. They can be helped to understand so many of the complexities related to living with the challenge of ADHD. ... Product Description
After Wayne Fencer, a recent film school grad, attends his ex-girlfriend's funeral, he struggles to come to terms with her suicide and the startling news that she was pregnant with his child. Desperate to understand and haunted by regret, Wayne begins a journey that takes him up and down the East Coast (on foot) and across the American West (in an RV), finally arriving at the Costco Soulmate Trading Outpost in the middle of the Black Rock Desert. Along the way, Wayne's journey becomes a series of meditations on modern life, drawing on everything from the ancient philosophy of Siddhartha Gautama to a visit with Gregorio Fuentes, Hemingway's fishing guide and inspiration for The Old Man and the Sea.

A dazzling exploration of love, death, escape, home, and maturation set in the era of information overload, Attention. Deficit. Disorder. is highly original and exhibits an unforgettable voice that is Listi's alone. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Glib and Contemptible
There isn't any need for this book.Really.Mr. Listi writes like an unemployed television writer, which, I would suppose, he is.Or will be, at any rate.Save your money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Keep Trying, Gen X
As a general rule, I don't read fiction aside from a few authors. One of those authors is Doug Coupland, an eccentric Canadian writer who manages to capture perfectly the annoying faux-hipness of modern North American intellectual life through ironic and detached dialogue, an exaggeratedly blase' sexuality and ridiculous plots (check out his Girlfriend in a Coma for this). But Coupland manages to make this approach readable because it is obvious that he is poking fun at his readers and himself and then laughing along with them. It is as if he is saying: "Oh, you listen to NPR and look for excuses to bring it up? Well, I , too, am a poseur." And he is able to so ably comment on American social life because he is detached enough as a Canadian to view it broadly. His work epitomizes The Farce. Capitalization intended.

The reason I mention all this is because someone told me that if I liked Coupland, I would really like the book I review this month, Brad Listi's Attention. Deficit. Disorder. I didn't. While striving for that Coupland-esque detachment, Listi fails to find it. Its quirks are too self-conscious, and, by trying so hard to capture the essence of the second decade of life for young Gen Xers and their too-young-to-be-Gen-X younger siblings, he turns the book into something of an unintended farce.

The story begins with Wayne Fencer, college graduate fresh out of school, finding out that his ex-girlfriend has killed herself and that, at one point, was carrying his baby. This sets the protagonist and the plot in motion, as he goes off on a very jangly self-discovery trip, including stops in Cuba and Mexico and New York City, all the while having improbable experiences and smoking lots of pensive cigarettes. He showers with an underage Cuban prostitute and meets the old man who inspired Hemingway to write The Old Man and the Sea. He fistfights a frat boy in a New York bar. He reads a Tony Robbins book in one day. He hikes the Appalachian Trail and takes the trail name "Wolfgang." He tries to sell a screenplay for an "intentional unintentional comedy" in Los Angeles. All this within the span of a year or so, I might add.

It all sounds like it would be interesting, but it somehow fails to be. It leads to the reader not caring anymore about three-quarters of the way through the book. It is as if the author were trying to instill the book's namesake disorder in the reader by making it impossible to pay attention anymore as the plot vibrates to pieces.

The book comes to no conclusions, the characters learn no lessons and the whole thing crashes to a halt like a writing project that got away from someone taking a creative writing class. It is not recommended. But anything by Doug Coupland is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention. Deficit. Disorder. by Brad Listi
This is the second copy of this book that I've purchased, having given away the first copy to a friend.I'm typically pretty possessive of my books, but this one I had to let out to friends and family.Brad Listi has created a protagonist who is not only believable and grounded with real-life problems and misunderstandings, but is also culturally relevant to Generation X and Y.In Attention. Deficit. Disorder. you have a story about a young man not in the vein of the "whoa is me" phase of young adulthood, but a touching story of the yearning for understanding and meaning of why things happen the way they do.Two thumbs up from this reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect.
In this story of a 20-something's crisis of meaning after learning of the suicide of the ex-girlfriend he dumped, Listi artfully captures the process of finding sense in living. Yes, there's a hint of self-awareness to the tone. No, this doesn't detract from the book. Great topic, great writing, go read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky. Interesting. Fun.
I really enjoyed this quirky book that was ultimately about nothing. I really loved the style and the humour. I especially loved the casual mention of Fragile X and that a minor character shared my name (even if it was spelled wrong!). I'll keep an eye out for him! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book every parent and doctor should read!
I can't say enough about this book.As a nurse, it has all of the medical information I am looking for and as a parent (son with ADD) it is very informative and easy to read. This is a book that can be utilized from cover to cover or to look up specific topics. It does an amazing job of explaining how every child with ADD or ADHD is an individual and discusses all of the factors that may be influencing the severity of our child's problems.Best of all, this book does a very good job of listing many treatment alternatives, the studies and results done on each treatment, and in what setting the treatment is appropriate.Medications are discussed but by no means are they the first "go to" treatment mentioned. At the back of the book are tools for parents, teachers and medical personnel to use as you navigate the best options to help your child. After reading this book, I have been able to work with my son's teachers and implement simple things in the classroom so that he can be successful and proud of himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is excellent for parents, teachers and administrators. There are wonderful ideas to help in the classroom and at home.I would strongly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, practical behavior manual for parents and practitioners
This is one of the best manuals for my practice with kids with ADHD that I have found.I use this daily and have found immeasureable help in parenting suggestions for parents who are struggling.I am really impressed with this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Through and comprehensive
There's certainly no dearth of information or misinformation on ADHD available to the public. However, compiling a comprehensive knowledge base for the newly initiated is a challenge.I came across this book after reading nearly everything the public library had to offer on ADHD.In this book Dr. Flick succinctly puts together an excellent resource on all the evidence-based information on ADHD.He also includes sections on "alternative" treatments that will appeal to some but is careful to indicate where science meets the marketting.

If you're new to ADHD this tome may be a little intimidating. The writing is here is a bit more dry than some other good sources on the subject like Barkley, Rosenthal, Phelan or Hallowell. Also as with all books on ADHD published before 2000-2002 some of the details on medication are out of date. The only serious omission is an explicit section on choosing good professionals to help you manage ADHD.But if you read and assimilate all the information in this book you should become a good judge of whether or not every member of your treatment team is functioning well.

If you are only buying one book on ADHD to keep on your shelf at home this is it.

2-0 out of 5 stars ADD parent not satisfied!
I purchased this *kit* based on the fact it had ideas, activities ... etc.Maybe me having ADD I missed some info on it?When I got it I was surprised to find it was a book! Not a *kit* at all.So I will probably never use it ... unless I was to purchase a copier machine and print off items as needed. I have read some of it and it had good ideas and info.Just not what I had purchased it for at all!=( ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have
There are three books about ADD you ought to own (four, if you're a woman.)This is most definetely one of them. Many, if not most books about ADD are helpful but the information is all the same.If you've read one "all about ADD" book, you're probably read them all. This one is very different and is equally helpful for ADD adults and parents/teachers of ADD kids and teens. It's worth every penny and then some.
(The other books I found to be extremely helpful and way above-average in useful content are:
"Driven To Distraction" & "Delivered From Distraction" by Dr. John Ratey and "ADD & Women" by Sari Solden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on a very confusing condition
Personally speaking, I can't understand why this book is not utilized by more clinicians. Being diagnosed with ADD myself, I've read a lot of the ADD literature. The only other book that compares to this one is the book by Dr. Daniel Amen which uses SPECT brain scans in order to demonstrate that their are real physical abnormalities associated with ADD and ADHD. This book by Fisher and Beckley does the same thing except from a clinical / neuropsychological perspective.

In addition, I feel that this book makes a valuable contribution that is ignored by other leading researchers such as Dr. Russell Barkley. This contribution is the distinction between the hyperactive and non-hyperactive forms of ADD. This is a widely ignored fact which is crucial in deciding what is the best course of treatment, and I can't understand why most researchers in the field ignore it. After reading this book, I only wish that more clinicians had an understanding of the different subtypes described here, and that the psychiatrists who compose the DSM-IV would pay more attention to it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Source of Information on ADD
This book has taught me more about ADD than all the other books I have read combined. For anyone diagnosed with ADD, thinks they have ADD, or is close to someone with ADD, this book will deepen your understanding for what is really going on in the brain of an ADD individual. This book armed me with the information to understand myself better and to better inform my doctor so that he can understand me better. The authors explain the scientific reasons for ADD in its complex detail in a way that can be easily comprehended by any reader. The authors also address a subdivision of ADD that most books ignore and continue to address the vast differences that individuals within different groupings may experience. This is a great book to keep handy as a resource on ADD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for those who know they need the info!
Useful information for ADD folks and those who love them. The challenge, of course, is getting the ADD folks to focus on the timely info before they get involved with life: jobs, marriages, interpersonalrelationships......Book is a good baseline from which the non-ADD personcan coach loved ones. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A really annoying book
This is primarily a compendium of various alternative approaches to treating ADD/ADHD, with the chapters written by different contributors. A few chapters/contributors are helpful and reasonable, some chapters are stating the obvious (I need a chapter to tell me soft drinks are unhealthy?), and many chapters simply offer their authors a venue to peddle snake oil. I confess, many chapters I simply didn't get to, because I couldn't face another page of histrionics about the authors' brilliant cures and the drug companies' evil conspiracies to suppress them. (Note the upper right-hand corner of the cover: if this book really had the "1st Documented Cure for Autism", wouldn't this bit of news rate more than a square inch of their cover?)

The worthwhile information I found here is mostly available online as well. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Books chief strength is
its conviction that ADD/ADHD is a complex condition that can't be reduced to a single point of origin. Ken Vegotsky, one of the books contributors believes "It is unfortunate for children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD that the North American perspective tends to take a 'one-size-fits all' approach."
